Former Final Fantasy devs team with European studio on JRPG Zodiac

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 04:00 PM PDT

French developer Kobojo has announced a new game, Zodiac, made in collaboration with frequent Final Fantasy composer Hitoshi Sakimoto (Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII), series scenario writer Kazushige Nojima (Final Fantasy VII) and sound designer Masaaki Kaneko.

The team describes the completely hand drawn turn-based RPG as, "Final Fantasy meets Valkyrie Profile and Dragon's Crown in a new online multiplayer experience."

Kobojo, which has Paris and Scotland-based studios, started as a social game developer, but has since shifted focus to developing high quality role-playing games for mobile devices. It is showing Zodiac at TGS on iOS and PlayStation Vita, but there is no lead platform for the loose 2015 release date.

CEO Mario Rizzo explained that things like platform and price model will need to be worked out on the business side. "It could be Xbox," he said, and noted that it is a Unity game so PC and console versions are all viable (it was being demoed with a controller). Cross platform compatibility, too, will be completely dependent on platform holders, as there are "no technical restrictions" on being able to play the game on your phone, then pick up the same character on your Vita or elsewhere. "Only business restrictions," Rizzo said.

Not-Review: In Real Life

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 03:00 PM PDT

First Second is quickly becoming one of the best small press comic publishers, especially for those who like videogames. Their Glorkian Warrior book and corresponding videogame are both delightful in their own right, though neither are particularly "about" videogames in any meaningful way.

In Real Life is more directly focused on videogames -- specifically, MMOs and how they can have real life effects on people emotionally and economically. Based on the short story Anda's Game, In Real Life puts us in the place of a teenage girl named Anda who gets deeply involved with an MMO called Coarsegold. I don't play MMOs very often, but if there were a real game that looked like Coarsegold, I'd probably be hooked on it.

A bunch of skeletons explode in the first 20 minutes of Hellraid

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Techland's decision to delay Hellraid and move it to PS4, Xbox One, and PC seems to be paying off. That said, you may want to skip the first half of this 20-minute video -- it begins with the first level, which is slow to get going. Look for magic use at around 12 minutes in.

Not the most thrilling footage, but it's nice to have the option to watch it, all the same. Hellraid has one of my favorite things in videogames -- skeletons that violently crumble when you smack them hard enough -- so I'm interested to see how it comes together. There's much left to see.

Physical release of Minecraft PS4 drops October 7

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT

The disc-based version of Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition will release on October 7, 2014.

The game is already available digitally on PS4, priced at $19.99 if you're coming in fresh or $4.99 if you're upgrading from PS3. Save files are compatible between the two versions.

Sony says details regarding Minecraft for PS Vita "in a few weeks." Hold tight.

I should probably make some remark about Microsoft owning the property, but instead I'll just say that the box art for the PlayStation versions is nice. Had not seen that until now.

Review: D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die (Prologue, Episode 1, Episode 2)

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT

D4 starts off rather grounded. The game's opening narration describes the tale as a "story of a man with a very strange fate." A man whose wife was murdered, and is tirelessly searching for her killer.

Then a cat girl named Amanda runs into your apartment, spits a mouse into your mouth, and you puke.

Hardline 29: Destiny's lukewarm reception, first taste of Smash Bros., and the world is a vampire

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 11:30 AM PDT

Hardline is back! For this week's episode, Max filled in to speak with me and Bill about Destiny and how the game fails to live up to Bungie's pedigree in some areas. Super Smash Bros., on the other hand, is just plain great, even if the 3DS demo is on the short side.

Max also became obsessed with Goat Simulator clones on the App Store and shared his idea for a potential Duke Nukem / Aliens crossover game that would be amazing, in the right hands.

For the audio-only episode, you can subscribe on iTunes and RSS or download directly.

Here's what you'll get in the Super Smash Bros. 3DS demo

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Nintendo released a demo for Smash Bros. 4 on the 3DS to Club Nintendo Platinum members last week. Pandemonium in the Smash Bros. community ensued. It's a relatively small piece of the game -- five characters, one arena, two modes (solo or group), and a little sandbag action during loading times on multiplayer matches. Don't let that fool you though. It's still got enough content to keep you busy for days, maybe weeks.

Last week's version of the demo has unlimited plays. The public demo releasing on the eShop tomorrow morning does not. That's going to be a problem for a lot of you. Unless you plan to keep the demo running on your 3DS until the game comes out on October 3, chances are you'll run out of plays before you've gotten your fill.

Legend of Grimrock 2 gets a pre-order trailer and an October release date

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT

The highly anticipated sequel to 2012's first-person dungeon crawler Legend of Grimrock is nearly upon us. Finnish indie development studio Almost Human has released a stunning new trailer for it that demonstrates some of the numerous improvements made since the original. Of particular interest is the more open-ended, outdoor sections of the game. It's looking quite lovely, I must say.

Legend of Grimrock 2 releases on October 15 for PC and is now available for pre-order at a 15% discount. If pre-ordering is your thing, then you might want to consider doing so at the developer's site. Purchasing it there will not only get you a discount, but will also net you both a Steam key as well as a DRM-free standalone installer of the game once it is released.

In Legend of Grimrock 2, you'll be in control of a group of four prisoners who are shipwrecked on the Isle of Nex, a secluded island filled with ancient ruins, mysterious shrines, and a vast underground network of dungeons and mines. The developer states that LoG 2 will contain over 20 hours of dungeon-crawling gameplay with thousands of squares filled with hidden switches, pressure plates, secret doors, riddles, deadly traps, and more.

Another addition worth mentioning is the included Dungeon Editor. In it, you'll have the ability to create your own adventures, fill them with puzzles, traps, or even create new items, monsters, and environments with custom graphics and audio. I can only imagine all the incredible levels the community is going to come up with using this tool.

I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on this one. October just can't get here quickly enough.

Here's our first glimpse at the gameplay of Torment: Tides of Numenera

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT

I've been playing inXile Entertainment's Wasteland 2 before its full release on Friday but I have to say, I'm even more excited for the studio's other title, Torment: Tides of Numenera. We've now got our first good glimpse and yep, it looks like a classic style of RPG. Despite the game being delayed into early 2015, playing Wasteland 2 has me eager to play Tides of Numenera right now.

The original Planescape Torment was highly regarded for its well written story and character choices and you can see a little of that in this short bit of pre-alpha footage. Making a guy get eaten by a giant tentacle monster just so you can open an interdimensional portal? That's the kinda thing I want to get up to in Tides of Numenera!

Horseback riding and takedowns abound in this 21-minute MGSV demo

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 09:30 AM PDT

Previously we had a glimpse of Quiet's escapades with the full version of the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain teaser posted earlier this week. Now feast your eyes on this 21-minute gameplay demo straight from TGS 2014.

In the video, Quiet and Snake are infiltrating an outpost in what looks to be a jungle biome rather than the desert, and we finally get to see more of Quiet in action. I don't know about you, but I was waiting for an abundance of gameplay like this, and it's looking solid. Get it? I crack me up.

PS3 users can mess around with PlayStation Now

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Did you spend any time using PlayStation Now on PS4? Too pricey?

More of us will have the opportunity to test out the open beta for the streaming service now that it's available for PS3 "in mainland U.S. and parts of Canada." There's some 150 titles up for streaming, with inFamous, Ultra Street Fighter IV, and God of War: Ascension on the way.

"The service is still growing and evolving based on the feedback we've received from PS Now users," said SCEA VP of platforms marketing John Koller. "We recently reduced the pricing for select 4-hour rentals, and we are still working towards a PS Now subscription option."

I have to say, game-streaming services aren't high on my list of things I'd like to beta test.

Devolver Digital's Heavy Bullets leaves Early Access

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Publisher Devolver Digital and game developer Terri Vellmann are pleased to announce that the gloriously neon-soaked, procedurally generated first-person shooter, Heavy Bullets, is leaving Steam Early Access today. It's available for PC, Mac, and Linux on Steam and the Humble Store with a launch-week discount of 15% for those interested.

For those unfamiliar with the title, Heavy Bullets is a randomized FPS dungeon crawler where you are tasked with making your way through a colorful (understatement) maze full of hostile creatures and malfunctioning security equipment.

If you're curious about how the game plays, take a look at the launch trailer Devolver put together featuring well-known streamers playing it, including the lovely and talented Jim Sterling.

As an added bonus, anyone who purchased Heavy Bullets while it was in Early Access will receive a giftable Steam key for the game in their Steam inventory to share the title with a friend.

Spinning limousine game Roundabout is round-a-out today

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT

For those who have been waiting patiently for the 1970s B-movie live action and nonsensical spinning limo gameplay of Roundabout, the wait is over. We knew it was releasing today on Steam and the Humble Store, and now it is here, and all is well.

The release trailer above hints at the plot for Roundabout, complete with a love interest, a dastardly villain, a skeleton, and Danny Baranowsky. Also, the limo can wear a hat that looks like a giant hamburger.

Ori and the Blind Forest looks crazy good

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT

I keep forgetting that Moon Studios' platform adventure game Ori and the Blind Forest is coming to PC as well as Xbox One, despite being published by Microsoft Studios. Big thing to forget!

My takeaway from Brett's preview out of gamescom was that Ori holds up well as a platformer. When a game is this beautiful, it's easy to be skeptical. Some of these "new" screenshots from Tokyo Game Show look awfully familiar, but I'll let it slide -- too pretty not to.

Sonic x Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is, uh, yeah...

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 06:45 AM PDT

Admittedly, this collaboration is slightly less horrifying once you realize it's a Felyne (or Palico, if you want to be precise) wearing Sonic the Hedgehog armor. Slightly.

Still, I think this tops the sexy/stretchy fan art for Sonic Boom and our special birthday celebration. The fact that it's official pushes it over the top for me.

Capcom also announced a Taiko Drum Master Hunting Horn for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Its greatness will help you forget the Sonic monstrosity.

Bad dog! Outpost 13 basically lets you play as The Thing

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT

This is why you name a dog Fluffy or Fido or Spot. When you go and give it a name like Fenrir, after a mythological wolf monster, it gets taken over by an alien being and wants nothing more than to devour your flesh and bones. Bad dog! No treats for you today.

The kicker with Outpost 13 is that players control the dog/alien, in an attempt to gain the human crew members' trust, separate them from one another, and systematically murder each of them. In the point-and-click adventure, stealth and planning play roles, because if Fenrir is found out as the monstrous menace that he is, it spells a quick trip to the barrel of a flamethrower or two.

Outpost 13 has already passed through Steam's Greenlight process (coincidentally, in 13 days), and is currently seeking a small amount of funding on Kickstarter. Cat lovers who are interested may want to get in sooner than later, as backers gain access to Dr. Meow Meow Jones. Where Fenrir must be controlled by the evil alien Tantalus in order to perform its dastardly deeds, Dr. Meow Meow Jones is just a regular cat.

(The previous sentence is a lie, but let's be honest, it wouldn't be that far fetched.)

Watch Maya wreck Sadira in these new Killer Instinct Season 2 screens

Killer Instinct is still chugging, and I still go back to it occasionally to play with friends. It's really held up, and Season 2 looks to bring more characters in along for the ride.

In addition to the confirmed TJ Combo and hinted Cinder, Maya is a new contender, and she looks pretty formidable based on the below screens. For reference, Maya hails from Killer Instinct 2, even though she looks like a new character.

The Final Fantasy XIII trilogy is headed to Steam

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT

The official site gave it away, to some extent, but here we go: Final Fantasy XIII is coming to Steam on October 9, priced at $15.99, with XIII-2 and Lightning Returns arriving for PC by spring 2015.

XIII already has a listing on Steam and is open for pre-purchase -- doing so will save you ten percent, bumping the price down to $14.39. Not bad. System requirements are up, too.

As someone who has almost entirely avoided Final Fantasy as a franchise -- it's just not my thing, generally! -- XV and Type-0 have my attention at Tokyo Game Show, not this. Sorry, Lightning.

This new TGS Deep Down Japanese trailer is in English

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT

I know a lot of people have no faith in Capcom these days, but Deep Down looks interesting to me every time I see it. It doesn't look quite as good as a Souls game mechanically, but I'll take everything I can get in terms of action dungeon crawling.

This new TGS 2014 trailer highlights some of the less seen aspects of the game, like the Assassin's Creed-esque "modern day virtual reality" gimmick. I just hope the free-to-play scheme doesn't ruin the game.

I sure did kill a lot of giant bugs in the new Earth Defense Force on PS4

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT

In the course of covering videogames, sometimes you go into an appointment knowing exactly what's going to happen. You know precisely how the game will play and what the demo will be like -- everything's just crystal clear. That's how my first look at Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair on PS4 went. There sure are a lot of bugs, and oh boy, do you ever kill them.

Dropped off in the middle of a giant city, I was given ten minutes to defend Earth with my forces. Equipped with a machine gun and a rocket launcher, I set off to blow as many giant ants into rust-colored oblivion as I possibly could. Real talk: If the game kept track of this sort of thing, I may have done more damage than good. But, we're here to fulfill our exterminator superhero fantasies, so let's not dwell on semantics.

Anyone that's familiar with the franchise won't be surprised to find out that The Shadow of New Despair isn't going to push the PS4 to its visual limitations. Right now, everything looks pretty rough, and I'd doubt it ever gets significantly better. Every asset in the game is just more jagged than we're used in 2014 (and the past several years), but that's to be expected with EDF. It's almost a calling card of sorts.

Another calling card is just how much cathartic, dumb fun it can be. Yep, good thing I killed those huge bugs so now I can go take care of the giant ants climbing on the skyscraper and then I can massacre this other group of them. Relentless, unceasing insect murdering. It's not for everyone, but it looks as if The Shadow of New Despair will be right up EDF fans' alley. And, that alley will probably house some bugs that needs blown up.

Nintendo Download: Super Smash Bros. 3DS demo

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT

It's a pretty lively week for Nintendo Download, with a few big 3DS arrivals. On the Wii U side though we have Wild Guns on the Virtual Console, as well as Arrow Time U, and Spikey Walls.

The big headliner is definitely the Super Smash Bros. demo on 3DS, which will be available tomorrow at 9AM PST. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call is also out, as is Cooking Mama 5 and Legend of the River King 2. On top of that we have FIFA 15, Horse Vet 3D, and Secret Empires of the Ancient World.

In terms of sales, we have the continuation of the Super Smashing Sale. Moon Chronicles, Mutant Mudds, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Conception II, Strike Force Foxx, Coaster Creator 3D, and Classic Games Overload are also all on sale.

Nintendo is still giving us teases of what's to come, and Mario Golf: Advance Tour has a September 25th release date for the Virtual Console on Wii U -- Castlevania: Dracula X will hit the Wii U as well on October 2nd.

Final Fantasy Explorers feels like Crystal Chronicles meets Monster Hunter

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 03:50 AM PDT

It's become exceedingly easy in recent years to point the finger at any four player cooperative game in Japan and call it a Monster Hunter clone. I'm not particularly fond of this way of thinking. Despite my love of Monster Hunter (200+ hours in MH4), I think many of the various hunting action games have unique, interesting qualities that separate them from one another.

Perhaps that's why I had been so jazzed to check out Final Fantasy Explorers, Square Enix's first attempt to dabble in the hunting action genre. With a stable of classic monsters, jobs, and giant bosses in its long history, Final Fantasy seems like the perfect franchise to get a spinoff in the genre.

Remember Triple Triad in Final Fantasy VIII? Check out Eminence: Xander's Tales

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 03:45 AM PDT

Back in the day when I first played Final Fantasy VIII, I fantasized about a world in which people could walk up to random strangers, ask to play a card game, and be treated to one without it being weird. We are not there yet, but the makers of Eminence: Xander's Tales apparently have had similar thoughts.

Eminence is planned as a massively multiplayer online trading card game, and one of the most interesting bits planned is the ability banned on most schoolyards: winner takes one of the loser's cards. This can be toggled between battles for those afraid of losing prized digital possessions, but I hope most player-vs-player battles are played for keeps.

I am a bit torn on how to feel about this. On the one hand, it seems a little iffy that the card gameplay is pretty much just a straight rip from FFVIII's Triple Triad subgame, but on the other hand, an MMO Triple Triad sounds like a pretty great idea.

Eminence: Xander's Tales is about halfway to its £50,000 crowdfunding goal. It is initially planned for iOS and Android phones, with tablets, PC, and console versions set as stretch goals.

Sonic Boom dashing to Wii U a week early

In a year when so many titles have been delayed, Sega is bucking trends. The rogue publisher has announced plans to actually hasten the release of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. Quelle surprise!

Motorcycle combat racer Road Redemption on Steam Early Access

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 03:15 AM PDT

It has been a little over a year since the Road Redemption Kickstarter campaign launched, and to nobody's surprise, it has slightly missed its projected August 2014 launch window, but it is not too far behind yet. The Road Rash-inspired motorcycle adventure is now up on Steam Early Access.

The video above shows that there is a lot more to the idea than simply updating the hit-someone-with-a-chain-while-you-ride-a-motorcycle gameplay of Road Rash. We also see some interesting stuff like projectile weapons, rooftop races, a grappling hook, and a surprisingly complex skill tree.

Feel the icy chill of these Dark Souls II Crown of the Ivory King DLC screens

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT

Snow isn't a common theme with the Souls series, so it's interesting that the upcoming Dark Souls II DLC Crown of the Ivory King will take place on an icy tundra. This new batch of screens looks suitably dreary, and I hope it lives up to the bar that was set by the second DLC.

This should be the last batch of add-ons for the foreseeable future, and there will be a Souls related break until Bloodborne hits next year.

Bladestorm lives up to its name, looks nice on PS4 and Xbox One

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 02:30 AM PDT

I'd never played Bladestorm, the historical action/strategy title that seems to be a bit of a cult classic within the Dynasty Warriors type. It's still a bit odd that Koei Tecmo is reviving the 2007 PS3 and 360 game and that the HD update is also coming to the PS3 along with the PS4 and Xbox One.

The TGS showing was sparse. Only the PS4 and Xbox One versions were being demoed, but the two Xbox One stations seemed to have cheaper (not by too much) TVs than the two PS4 stations (also my Xbox One character froze towards the end of the level). It also failed to shed light on the revealed full name, Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War & Nightmare.

The "Nightmare" bit is meant to refer to a new separate section of the game that eschews faux historical dealings for a fantasy world of goblins and the like.

Hyrule Warriors DLC contents confirmed, some characters are free

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT

In my review of Hyrule Warriors, I noted that during the course of the experience I got a free update -- an additional mode that added extra levels. It looks like the free DLC parade isn't done yet, as an upcoming update will add playable villains Wizzro, Volga, and Cia to the mix.

Four DLC packs are also confirmed. The "Backdoor" pack (new scenario, weapon, adventure map, and two costumes), the "Twilight Princess" pack (new character, weapon, adventure map, and two costumes), the "Majora's Mask" pack (two characters, an adventure map, and three costumes), and the "Ganon" pack (two modes).

US pricing isn't confirmed, but the first three are 1,200 yen, and the last is 500 yen. If you pre-order every pack for a limited time, you'll get a free Dark Link costume.

I pissed off a bunch of Bloodborne's villagers right quick

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Maybe it shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but the beings hanging out in the Tokyo Game Show showing of Bloodborne weren't exactly enamored by my presence. That's putting it lightly. Cautiously trekking through the village that the demo thrust me into, I quickly found out that none of them wanted to be my friend, and all of them just wanted me dead.

Some of them succeeded in their mission.

Able to select from a few different characters for the demo, I toggled between a fairly well-balanced build and one that favored agility. Rolling, blocking, and backward jumping to my heart's content, I disposed of these neighborhood crime watch suspicious suspects with relative ease. That is until they decided that group efforts would be more effective. Turns out these freaks of the night know a thing or two about efficiency and teamwork.

It's tough to get a real feel for a title like Bloodborne from a 20-minute demo without time to flesh out a unique character. I mean, it was Souls-esque with more fluid feeling controls in a setting that actually sets itself apart from the Souls series. That's grand; I'm all in. Given that it was my proper introduction to the game (I just kept missing it at other shows), what a fine first impression. But, a cheery visit and maybe a useless housewarming gift would've been a bit more inviting than death ad nauseam. I guess that's just how From Software rolls.

Off-screen Silent Hills trailer from TGS is still scary

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 12:18 AM PDT

Earlier today, Frank and I were poking around Konami's Tokyo Game Show booth, taking pictures of statues, candies, and other nonsense. We were stopped by a loud rumbling, which caused us to turn around. We just happened to be right in front of Konami's stage showing which debuted the newest footage for Silent Hills

I've been talking all day about how freaky and great that trailer was, hoping I could share it with you all soon. It's certainly not the best option, but there are a few off-screen versions going around. The one above is the best we could find so far.

What do you think?

That hallway hand thing? Yeah. No. Watch again and look at the brief moments when the light flashes and you can see its shape. Yikes.

Everything there is to know about Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, as told by Hammerlock and Torgue

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT

With coverage ramping up for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel leading up to its release in less than a month, several commenters have expressed confusion on what role this game is supposed to fill. To help demonstrate everything we know about the title (along with some new information), Sir Hammerlock and Mister Torgue take us on a nine-minute tour of Pandora's moon Elpis.

A lot of what is covered is just a recap from several months worth of announcements, including the low gravity environment, the Gravity Slam (or Butt Slam, colloquially), cryo weapons, laser weapons, Wilhelm's Surveyor drones Wolf and Saint, Nisha's Showdown ability, Athena's Kinetic Aspis shield, Claptrap's VaultHunter.EXE program, and an array of vehicles. Perhaps most importantly for some, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will have no Internet memes.

There is some new information for those who have been following along. The group threatening Elpis and Pandora is called the Lost Legion, which is described as a group of "homocidal Dahl soldiers." The Lost Legion is led by Colonel T. Zarpedon, who has creepy glowing eyes and pilots a General Knoxx-esque mech. Additionally, junk loot is worth picking up now, as several pieces of common gear can be combined in a special machine to craft rarer stuff.

What I am most interested to hear is a continuation of one of my favorite things from some of the most recent Borderlands 2 Headhunter DLC packs: the Vault Hunters now have more dialogue reacting to events in the story, which makes for a more interesting experience for those who play through with multiple characters, and really helps to flesh out and differentiate the characters from one another outside of combat.

Watch this new Yakuza Zero footage and daydream about playing it

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 11:30 PM PDT

New footage of the recently announced Yakuza 0 (or is it Yakuza Zero?) was revealed today at Tokyo Game Show 2014. I can always count on seeing new Yakuza games at TGS, but I can also count on being disappointed after my initial excitement because they might not ever be localized.

Bittersweet? For sure, especially after seeing this new footage. There's all the face kicking, eye stabbing, and running around pre-bubble burst Japan you could want. Young Kiryu still looks like a full-on badass, though his face is smooth as a hostess club girls' butt.

Yep, I want this. You do too. Never say never.

Review: Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 07:01 PM PDT

Disney Infinity was quite the ambitious project, but it fell flat in a few key areas. This was mostly due to a lack of even game worlds, with a few of the universes overshadowing others that felt more rushed. The other aspect of the game that didn't fully deliver was the Toy Box mode -- a take on LittleBigPlanet's "create your own" levels mechanic.

With Disney Infinity 2.0, Avalanche Software is poised to rectify both of those issues, combined with free reign of the Marvel license. While 2.0 is still primarily targeted towards the younger audience, the overall package is much more enticing the second time around.

Really, this is the only way you could ever play Onechanbara at TGS

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 06:56 PM PDT

If you want to play Onechanbara Z2: Chaos at TGS 2014, this is how you'll be playing it: looking into windows strategically placed over where nipples would be. Obviously. Were you expecting something else? It looks like an extremely stimulating setup. The game must be absolutely titillating. Breast joke.

But this kind of setup looks extremely uncomfortable. I suppose it might be a better setup than PR representatives breathing down your neck to make sure you follow their directions, but it's still a little ridiculous.

I am curious, though -- is the game any good?

We try Metal Gear Solid cardboard box candy at TGS

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 06:43 PM PDT

Yes, they really have Metal Gear Solid The Phantom Pain cardboard box candy at Tokyo Game Show 2014. We were stupid enough to spend 640 yen (about $6) on eight pieces of what looks to be tiny squares of chocolate crisped rice cakes.

As you could imagine, the candy is not worth $6. It's dry and bland. Bad aftertaste, too. But the cardboard box it came in is great, as is the included sticker.

You can see my first impressions in the Vine below.

Thanks, Kojima.

Tokyo Game Show 2014 kicks off today (also, floor gallery)

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 05:01 PM PDT

Tokyo Game Show 2014 has officially kicked off today, running through September 21. As always, these first two days are for business (yeah, right) and the remaining two add in the public (and the cosplayers; sweat).

This year's show brings 32 countries and 421 exhibitors together, showing a record number: 1,361 titles. So far, the show seems to be getting back to basics, with plenty of console games to show far. VR and mobile definitely make a showing, but this is really about the current generation of consoles. Great news, I'd say.

Stick with us this week as we bring you previews and impressions from the Tokyo Game Show floor. Let us know if you'd like us to check anything out.

What the best Smash Bros. player in the world wants you to know about Smash 4

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 05:00 PM PDT

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on Youtube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

Sup Holmes is taking a break this week thanks to a wedding between one of the best programmers in the world and one of the most charismatic ex-Nintendo employees who ever lived. that ought to be good. In the meantime, here's a rerun of last week's episode with Gonzalo "ZeRo" Barrios, the 19-year old winner of this past suppers Smash Bros. E3 2014 Invitational tournament. At the time of this episode, Gonzalo had been playing Smash Bros. for the 3DS for about three days straight. He had slept for about 10 hours total over that weekend. That didn't diminish his levels of youthful sass though. If anything, it only increased it.

We talked a lot about the new game (tiers, changes, excitements, disappointments, new techniques) which I found endlessly fascinating, but I couldn't pass up on the opportunity to learn more about Gonzolo himself -- what lead him to become this good at Smash Bros, which games in the series he prefers, the economics of playing Smash Bros. as your full time job, if he's ever considered making a fighting game himself, and more. It hit me while we were talking that at 19, Gonzalo can barely remember a time when Smash Bros. was not a part of his life. He won his first tournament at age 10, and has been playing professionally for the past 3 years. You can only imagine how he felt when he met Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai. He talks about that on the show too.

Thanks again to Gonzolo for appearing on the show! Hopefully it's not the last time we meet. Who knows, maybe next time he's on the show, it will be to talk about developing his first game. That went pretty well for Mike Z and Adam Heart...

That Metal Gear Collection 2014 is actually a clothing line

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Kojima had been hinting around at something known as the "Metal Gear Collection 2014" for a few weeks now. Naturally, the internet was abuzz with rumors that it could actually be HD remakes of the previous games like Halo's Master Chief Collection.

Imagine everyone's surprise when it was revealed to be a clothing line packed with T-shirts, jackets, and other items emblazoned with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain imagery.

I'm not going to say I'm not interested, but honestly, a new collection for current consoles would have been a much more interesting prospect. Still, this is pretty cool -- if you live in Japan, anyway.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD plays as well as ever

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 05:00 PM PDT

I adored Final Fantasy Type-0 when it first released on the PSP in Japan a few years back. It took me a whopping 75 hours to clear the game my first time, and while it undoubtedly had its fair share of problems (weird RTS sections, poor group leveling system, camera), I felt that the positives heavily outweighed the negatives. It's not secret that it's my personal favorite Final Fantasy of the last generation.

In what turned out to be a pleasant surprise, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD appeared on the TGS show floor in completely playable fashion, so I rushed over first thing to give it a look.

The new Pink/White PS Vita is super cute

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 04:52 PM PDT

I'll stick with my teal blue Japanese PS Vita that I brought home from TGS last year. But I'm still digging the new Pink/White model, on display at TGS 2014. It's just like mine with the all-white face, with the back taking all the color.

This new Vita launches in November in Japan, priced at 18,980 yen.

New Ys for PS4/Vita gets a brand spankin' [not so] new trailer

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 04:45 PM PDT

[Update: So apparently this is mostly the same trailer as before, only they just released it again for TGS. Whoops!]

With Japanese JRPG developer Falcom on the cusp of releasing their latest game here in Japan (Sen no Kiseki), it's time for them to start ramping up their Ys hype train.

They've released a brand new Ys trailer for TGS, which seems to imply that we're not looking at a side story or another remake, but in fact Ys VIII. Some of the text toward the end of the video refers to ancient civilizations, old beasts, ghost ships, haunted islands, and a few other bits that would imply you'll be seeing a lot of crazy stuff in-game.

Perhaps more importantly however is the return of the jump mechanic. As much as I adored Ys 7 and Ys Memories of Celceta, the lack of a jump button really hit hard. I'm looking forward to more frustrating platforming than you can shake an Adol at.

Quiet's disappearing act is awesome in the latest Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain trailer

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 04:45 PM PDT

Last week we got a glimpse of Quiet's powers thanks to the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain teaser, and now the entire trailer out of TGS 2014 is available for your viewing pleasure.

Unfortunately, it's in Japanese of course -- it's still plenty of unadulterated Metal Gear awesome, though. Hey, Quiet! Why you lookin' so down, homegirl?

Bravely Second is shaping up quite nicely

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 04:30 PM PDT

Square Enix's latest traditional 3DS JRPG, Bravely Second, was playable on the Tokyo Game Show floor this year, and I had a chance to go hands on with it. This is the first time the game has been released to the public, so I was eager to see what had changed since Bravely Default.

The actual demo proper was brief, taking me a little under ten minutes to clear in its entirety. It kicks off with the new characters, Yuu, Jean, Nikolai, and Magnolia introducing themselves to the player and promptly breaking the fourth wall. It seems clear that the demo was designed specifically for TGS, and may not even be a scenario present in the final game.

Final Fantasy XV screenshots from TGS are...uh

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 04:07 PM PDT

You've seen the trailer so now see the screenshots Square Enix handed me this morning at Tokyo Game Show 2014 for Final Fantasy XV. They're having a tailgating party. Car-b-que. It's a nice car, I guess.

But the screenshots look nice! That battle one does something for me.

The upcoming Xbox One and PS4 title has this new media, but that's the only thing you'll get out of TGS 2014. Hang in there.
