The Great Ace Attorney trailer features a colorful cast of characters

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 04:00 PM PDT

The latest batch of TGS hotness is this The Great Ace Attorney trailer, which details the upcoming early 20th century-based spinoff prequel to Phoenix Wright. It also breaks down what look to be some interesting investigation techniques along with some gorgeous artwork.

It will feature Sherlock Holmes and Watson as part of its supporting cast, except Watson is a young girl with a PhD clad in lolita clothing. You know how it goes.

The star will be Ryunosuke Naruhodo, Phoenix's ancestor, and we're looking at an upcoming 3DS launch in Japan, though there's no word yet on an official Western translation. It's likely, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.

The latest Fatal Frame trailer is weirdly uplifting at the halfway mark

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 03:30 PM PDT

After brief glimpses, box art, and screens, we've finally got another look at the upcoming Fatal Frame: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden in the form of this trailer out of TGS 2014.

The trailer does a decent job of building the tension we've become familiar with as far as the Fatal Frame games, but then the strangely uplifting theme song "In This Cage" from Tsuki Amano sort of ruins any creepiness I felt during the first half.

I'm sure there will be plenty of horrific scenes to come, but if I had gone into this straight without any sort of background on the Fatal Frame series, I'm not sure this trailer would have sold me on it, as it feels quite run of the mill.I'd still play it, of course, if it happened to make its English debut!

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is launching worldwide next March, Square Enix announced today.

The remastered role-playing game will debut in North America on March 17, followed by releases in Japan on March 19 and Europe on March 20. The publisher also confirmed a downloadable demo of Final Fantasy XV will come included with the package.

Here's Swery holding a monkey and standing next to a yellow plastic woman

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 02:30 PM PDT

Was that headline not descriptive enough for you? What did you think would be in this post? There's Swery nonchalantly holding a stuffed monkey next to a weird yellow plastic statue thing. He did that during the entirety of his presentation. Just Swery and a monkey hanging out in a hotel like a gritty reboot of Duncan Checks In.

Oh yeah, D4 got an imminent release date in the same meeting, but there's decidedly less primate awesomeness attached to that tidbit. This is the real hard-hitting info you need.

Final Fantasy Agito+ announced for PlayStation Vita

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Final Fantasy Agito+ is coming to PlayStation Vita, Square Enix announced today.

The role-playing game initially launched in Japan this May as a mobile game. It will be available as a free-to-play release via PSN starting January 15, 2015. A retail version will also be on offer.

At E3 2014, producer Hajime Tabata mentioned the title "will definitely be localized," but offered no insight as to when a potential western release might happen.

Final Fantasy Agito serves as both a prequel and companion to Final Fantasy Type-0.

Final Fantasy XV TGS 2014 Trailer is pretty sharp

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 01:30 PM PDT

TGS 2014 is already off to a big start with the release of a brand new trailer for Final Fantasy XV. Much to the disappointment of many, it was absent from this year's E3 and gamescom shows, but the nearly three-minute trailer aims to make up for the lost time.

In this trailer, we get to see our heroes travel around outside of the city in a rather expensive car -- which by the way looks be to be fully controllable. Their trip down the scenic route shows off some massive wildlife and other foes looking for a fight. But our heroes are more than up for a challenge, and they even display some clever team focuses attacks.

It's a pretty sharp trailer, which isn't a surprise. Square Enix knows how to make its games look stunning, and this trailer certainly does a great job of showing that. With TGS already underway, we can expect to hear some more info about the state of FFXV, and hopefully when it will be released.

Stay tuned to Dtoid for more info from TGS 2014 as it's released.

Kill time with Bejeweled 3 now that it's free on Origin

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 11:30 AM PDT

It may not carry the same weight as past "On the House" offerings like Dead Space or Battlefield 3, but the latest freebie from Origin, Bejeweled 3, is a great game in its own right.

The popular match-three puzzler is free to download for PC and Mac until October 28, 2014.

It's about what you'd expect -- both from the genre and Bejeweled, specifically -- but sometimes the familiar is all you really want. Lots of modes in this installment. It's pretty fun.

Like Robotron and Smash TV? You might dig Iron Fisticle

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT

Silly name aside -- and, you know, at least it's memorable -- I'm all about Iron Fisticle.

This is a twin-stick shooter inspired by the likes of Robotron, Gauntlet, and Smash TV, which are such terrific games to borrow from and build upon. It's out now on Steam for $8.09.

After watching the trailer, you should know whether or not this game is for you, but I will add that the two-person co-op is limited to local play only. That'll be a big deal for some.

Namco gives us a nice long look at Tales of Zestiria

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Tales of Zestiria is on display at Tokyo Game Show this week, but those of us not cavorting around Japan will have to settle for this extended peek at the forthcoming role-playing game.

Bandai Namco aims to release Tales of Zestiria in Japan on January 22, 2015. No word yet on when exactly the publisher plans to localize the PS3 title for western audiences, though.

Free-to-play Quake Live rocket jumps onto Steam today

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 09:30 AM PDT

Good news, arena shooter fans, id Software's Quake Live is launching today on Steam.

As far as I can tell, the Steam version will be the same Quake Live you're used to if you're already signed up. Even though it may not be adding anything new, I'm still really glad to see it going up on the service. The game's a lot of fun, and it deserves a larger audience.

For those of you that haven't tried it out yet, Quake Live is a fast-paced PvP arena shooter that features over one hundred arenas and a dozen different game modes, including Free For All, Clan Arena, Domination, and more.

The base game is free to play, but the title does offer a subscription service if you're so inclined. Subscribing grants you the ability to play with your friends, access to a customizable server, and the ability to create or join clans.

It's fast-paced, it's free-to-play, and it caters to old-school multiplayer sensibilities. What else do you need to know? It's Quake and it's free! Get on it, already!

You can now play Goat Simulator on the go

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Coffee Stain Studios has brought Goat Simulator to iOS and Android. It's $4.99.

While the game is surely best controlled with something other than a touch screen, the make-your-own-fun sandbox experience is suitable for mobile, conceptually. It's something you'll want to play in short bursts to avoid burning yourself out too quickly. (Whoops.)

I won't double dip, but I enjoyed the disclaimer: "Goat Simulator is a completely stupid game and, to be honest, you should probably spend your money on something else, such as a hula hoop, a pile of bricks, or maybe pool your money together with your friends and buy a real goat."

Dragon Quest Heroes is all kinds of pretty

Watch Sebastian stumble around a lot in this Evil Within trailer out of TGS 2014

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

We're marching ever closer to the release of The Evil Within, which is headed to a retailer near you October 14. Bethesda's latest horror IP is shown off in the latest trailer here, straight out of TGS 2014. If you've been trying hard to avoid spoilers and other pertinent information surrounding the game, it may be best not to look.

The trailer depicts protagonist staggering down a hallway before it devolves into a montage of the many nasty things that will happen in the game. I'm torn. Early reports make The Evil Within sound as though it could be a slog, but trailers like this intrigue me. Who am I kidding? I'm still going to play it, even if it could be disappointing. Horror's kind of my thing.

Is anyone else excited for Shinji Mikami's polarizing horror release?

FarSight Studios wants to bring The Addams Family table to Pinball Arcade

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT

FarSight Studios, makers of The Pinball Arcade, wish to bring a new table to the game. The table based on The Addams Family, released by Williams in 1992, is the most popular pinball table of all time and hopefully it will be coming to consoles and handhelds soon.

Bringing these tables to life on the TV screen is complex. The table has to be acquired, disassembled, and then digitized and modeled. FarSight goes even further after the visual process and actually emulates the ROM of the table in its program.

Unfortunately, this process is expensive. Rights have to be acquired and the tables themselves can be $10,000+ dollars. The rights just for this board, not including any kind of development cost, sit at $101,000 dollars. FarSight hopes to Kickstart these funds and bring a piece of pinball history to the home.

You can play FarSight Studios' current line-up of pinball tables on Android, iOS, Xbox Live Arcade, Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux, PlayStation 3, 4, and Vita, Wii U, and the Ouya.

Destiny is the same gameplay experience on last-gen, but looks pretty rough

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT

[Screenshots shown here are not the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 versions.]

The marketing for Destiny would have you believe that the only place it makes an appearance is on the PlayStation 4. But no, it certainly made its way to Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The latter of the three, specifically, are particularly surprising. Of course, Destiny was announced before the now current-gen consoles were even announced, so Bungie made due on its original announcement to bring their new shooter to last-gen systems.

You already know our thoughts on Destiny, and now you're not sure whether or not the PS4 or Xbox One versions are truly worth it over the PS3 or Xbox 360. After spending some time with both the PS3 and PS4 versions myself, the technical disparity between the generations has finally become quite apparent.

Here's a giant robot fighting a monster in the new Earth Defense Force

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT

I completely missed that there's another Earth Defense Force on the way.

Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair is an updated version of EDF 2025 for PlayStation 4 with additional content. Does that sound compelling? Don't answer until you look over the latest screenshots from Famitsu -- there's a giant robot battling a kaiju, guys.

I'm now genuinely considering this game despite the fact that I still haven't finished 2025.

Most of Alien: Isolation's Survivor Mode will be DLC

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Survivor Mode in Alien: Isolation, as described here in this video and further detailed in Steven's hands-on coverage, sounds cool. You'll have to complete certain objectives on a timer while being hunted, and factors like which items you grab and how quickly you make it to the end (if you make it to the end) will be reflected in your leaderboard score. It should help round out the package.

But here's the catch: "Isolation will ship with a Survivor Mode demo featuring one playable map." The rest is coming as paid DLC, of course. Five packs are planned, with the first releasing on October 28. It contains three maps, a new playable character, "and a variety of enemy types."

The remaining Survivor Mode add-on packs are expected to be out by March of next year.

Ballin': Gatti brings gold PS4s and Xbox Ones to Dubai

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT

Jumbo Electronics of Dubai has announced that it will be selling custom rose gold PlayStation 4s and Xbox Ones. The consoles will be made by Italian jeweler Gatti and will make their debut at the Games14 conference in Dubai.

While the internals are the same as the run-of-the-mill version of the consoles, these special editions will run around 50000 UAE Dirhams or $13612 USD. So if you're ballin' and you know it, I guess pick up one of these babies. Or spend that money on something else, because who actually needs a rose gold console?

Arc System Works debuts new international website

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Developer Arc System Works has never really had a wieldy website for English speakers, but this week they're launching a brand new site -- ArcSystemWorksU.com.

The site will keep people up to date mostly in regards to the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series, and will cover news in all regions. As time goes on, they will also update the site with a database of past titles.

The original Final Fantasy is coming to the 3DS eShop, will be in 3D

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT

If you haven't played one of the kajillion ports of the original Final Fantasy yet, you'll get your chance yet again on the 3DS. In December Final Fantasy Explorers will launch in Japan, which will come with a download code to nab Final Fantasy on the 3DS eShop.

The full release will come in January 2015, and will feature full 3D as well as the remastered art from the PSP version. There's no word on an international release, but it's most likely in the cards.

Renegade Kid now has the rights for the Dementium series

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT

Did you like the Dementium series on the Nintendo DS? Well there's a reason why developer Renegade Kid couldn't create more games in the franchise -- they didn't have the rights. After a long wait, Renegade's Jools Watsham announced that they now have the rights back, and that Dementium sequels aren't tied up with the previous publisher anymore.

There aren't nearly enough horror games on the 3DS, so I hope that if games are coming at some point (nothing is confirmed), they deliver.

Xbox One PC controller bundle coming soon

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT

Microsoft made good on their promise to support the Xbox One controller on the PC, and it's pretty much all I use now for the platform. All you really have to do is just get an appropriate USB cable and plug it in, and you're good to go.

Soon enough though based on a new Microsoft store listing, you'll be able to snag an Xbox One controller with a free cable, so that it's available on PC after you take it out of the box. There's still no word on a wireless adapter for PC.

Battleborn is made of MOBAs, spice, and all shooters nice

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT

When Battleborn was first announced, there were certain trigger words my mind immediately connected before I had read a single word about the game. "Gearbox, shooter, color. Oh, I wonder what the loot drop rate is like," I said to myself. Then all the MOBA comparisons started, and I didn't know what to make of the game.

After roughly two hours worth of a hands-off presentation, it's clear that Gearbox is back to their genre-blending ways. Whether lightning can really strike twice remains to be seen, but I'm intrigued so far.

Xbox One sales tank in Japan following launch

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 02:30 AM PDT

The Xbox One sold 3,015 units during its first full week on the Japanese market, according to data obtained by sales tracking group Media Create. The new figures follow earlier reports of disappointing launch weekend sales, which totaled in at 25,674.

In contrast, Sony received a shot in the arm last week, as the PlayStation 4 found its way into 23,623 new homes in sync with the launch of Destiny

Bungie's shooter came in at number two and three on Japan's weekly software charts behind Super Smash Bros., tallying  91,277 copies on PS4 with an additional 49,503 coming on PS3. No Xbox One titles were among the country's best-selling games over the period.

Review: Hyrule Warriors

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT

We never could have imagined this mash-up in our wildest dreams.

Nintendo, Team Ninja, and Omega Force together, co-developing a game based on the Legend of Zelda and Dynasty Warriors series. Few stranger things have happened, and fans of both franchises have been eagerly awaiting this all-star combination for months on end.

While the typical Warriors trappings are still present in Hyrule Warriors, Nintendo has injected more than enough charm to make this collaboration something special.

Report: Final Fantasy XV will get a demo in 2015 packed-in with Type-O HD

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Final Fantasy XV may be getting a demo next year. Game Informer unleashed some info with a March 17 release date for Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, which had another tidbit embedded in it -- anyone who buys Type-O HD will get a XV demo.

The post has since been removed from Game Informer's site, but the idea makes perfect sense. Square Enix, along with Konami, have been packing in demos for ages -- one of my favorites includes the Final Fantasy VIII demo included with Brave Fencer Musashi.

The official Final Fantasy XIII Portal site now has a Steam logo on it

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT

TGS is imminent, and in a seemingly early case of jumping the gun, the official portal site for Final Fantasy XIII has added a peculiar Steam logo to the bottom of the page. This is likely not a mistake, and we may hear something soon about a full PC release for the sub-franchise.

Note that this is the landing page for all three XIII related games, including XIII-2 and Lightning Returns. If you've been turned off by the series as a whole after XIII but are still interested, watch a catch-up video for the first two games, then try Lightning Returns on a Steam sale.

Thomas Was Alone jumping to Wii U, Xbox One

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Thomas Was Alone appears to be hopping over to Wii U and Xbox One, according to a pair of listings from the USK, Germany's software ratings board.

The indie platformer from Mike Bithell launched on PC in 2012, and has since come to PS3, Vita, iOS, and Android. The announcement will seemingly be made official soon enough, as publisher Curve Digital told Eurogamer it will have news on Thomas Was Alone in the next few days.

Curve recently revealed plans to port a trio of independent games to Wii U later this year, including Lone Survivor, The Swapper, and Stealth Inc. 2. The studio is also responsible for WiiWare sensation Fluidity, as well as Explodemon and the PSN release of Proteus

Bithell is now developing his follow-up to Thomas Was Alone, Volume, a stealth action game slated to creep onto PS4, Vita, and PC sometime next year.
