Unleash the technicolor yawn in this latest trailer for Styx: Master of Shadows

Posted: 14 Sep 2014 02:00 PM PDT

In the latest skills-focused trailer for Styx: Master of Shadows, Cyanide Studios sheds some light on the clone-barfing ability we mentioned back in July.

Your clone is one of four Amber-fueled powers that you will be using to ascend the Tower of Akenash. As you can see in the video, by creating a clone, Styx opens up new tactical and strategic opportunities such as the ability to lure guards into desired locations, blinding your targets, distraction, and setting living death-traps for unsuspecting victims.

You will need to act fast, though. Your clones aren't stable and will deteriorate quickly before imploding. Another thing to keep in mind is that your Amber-based skills will come at a cost and the Amber to use them is a scarce commodity as you make your way up the tower.

As we approach its release next month, my interest in the title is really starting to pick up momentum. I typically don't gravitate towards stealth-based gameplay, but something about the dark fantasy world of Master of Shadows makes me think that I'll be giving it a shot as I did with Dishonored.

Styx: Master of Shadows launches on the PC, PS4 and Xbox One this October. If you're interested in pre-ordering the game, the studio is currently knocking off 20% on the Steam version.

PvP shark-'em-up Depth swims closer to a November release on Steam

Posted: 14 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Originally begun as a student project back in 2009, Digital Confectioners' Depth has undergone a lot of changes over the years. Envisioned as an single-player ARPG focused mainly on stealth and shark avoidance, the title has resurfaced as a fast-paced, aggressive, asymmetrical multiplayer game.

In it, divers must search the ocean floor, looking for valuable treasure while at the same time fending off the attacks of player-controlled Great White sharks.

I've had this one in my sights for a while, but after seeing the latest gruesome trailer, I'm pretty sure the game has officially earned a spot on my Must Have list.

Depth is currently scheduled for release on the PC this November. If you'd like to find out more about it, you can check out the game's Steam page, or visit the title's official website here.

How to turn depression and anxiety into a videogame

Posted: 14 Sep 2014 07:45 AM PDT

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on Youtube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

Last week on Sup Holmes we spoke at length with Matt Gilgenbach about is work on The Incredibles games, going independent with Retro*Grade, the soul crushing disappointment that followed, and how he channeled that sorrow into creating the upcoming horror game Neverending Nightmares. One might guess that spending a hour and a half talking to a man who made a disturbing and horrific game based largely on personal life experiences might dip into dour territory now and again, but Matt was upbeat and charming throughout the episode. I can't wait to play his game when it's released on Sept. 26th.

Thanks again to Matt for hanging out with us, and if you like Smash Bros and/or cute men who are good at videogames, join us here at 4pm EST when we welcome Gonzalo "Zero" Barrios to the program. He's one of the best Smash Bros players in the world and he's been playing the new game non-stop since it was released on Japan last Friday. We'll be talking to him about how he got into the competitive scene, how Smash Bros 4 stacks up against past games in the series, and a lot more. We're also giving out codes for the 3DS demo of the game, but you'll have to watch to try to grab one. I hope you do!

Dark Pit shows off his dark differences in Smash Bros. 4

Posted: 14 Sep 2014 07:15 AM PDT

The roster for the next Smash Bros. game has been fully revealed, and strangely enough, the character that's inspired the most discussion is a clone. As you might guess, it's generally not very happy discussion. So far, the response to Dark Pit seems to range from resigned to outraged.

It's good to keep in mind that clones don't necessarily take the a spot that could have gone to an all new character on a game's roster. For instance, it's not likely that Dark Pit took Shrek's coveted seat in Smash Bros. 4. There's more potential validity to the idea that Lucas, Mewtwo, or some other past Smash Bros. contestant character could have been there instead of Dark Pit.

Personally, I'm happy to get any sort of new content in my new videogame, even if said content isn't exactly "new new." I love Lucas and Mewtwo as much as the next guy, but if I start to miss them, I can just pop in Brawl or Melee. That said, if that rumored Snake, Chorus Kids, Ice Climbers, Wolf, Lucas DLC turns out to be real, I'll buy it on day one.

Sony still devoted to Vita, just changing tactics

Posted: 14 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT

The PlayStation Vita may have been missing in action from Sony's major press conferences this year, but don't mistake that as a sign the company has conceded defeat. Its just changed the battle plan.

Speaking with Eurogamer, PlayStation UK managing director Fergal Gara recognized the Vita is unlikely to ever be a runaway success, but that doesn't mean the portable still can't thrive on its own terms.

"It's trucking along," Gera said. "It's currently in year-on-year growth and enjoying a healthy year, and it's about to hit its biggest and potentially most powerful release of the year, which is Minecraft. That could be an extraordinary release for Vita.

"We're seeing a bit of reflected glory from PS4," he continued. "So there is a traction in remote play, and we see the numbers there. But it's more than that. It's just found its niche.

"It's not the biggest niche in the world, and we've been fairly open about talking about it entered a crowded landscape with many other devices providing some sort of handheld fulfillment. But for those who want that more specialist device and a more specialist experience, it does a damn good job, and therefore it trucks along quite nicely."

The Vita may not be the system we hoped it would be, brimming with console-quality experiences like Killzone: Mercenary and Uncharted: Golden Abyss, but Sony at least seems committed to making the best of an unfortunate situation. Expect to see plenty more smaller games continue to land on the portable.
