BioWare's multiplayer action-RPG Shadow Realms looks fast and fun Posted: 12 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT BioWare had my attention with those live-action teasers building up to Shadow Realms, but I've not kept up with the four-versus-one "modern" fantasy role-playing game since it was proper unveiled. If you're in a similar boat, here's Max Scoville and Mike Cosimano talking about it at length. My general reaction so far is "Huh. That could be cool." I'm not sold on the episodic nature of the game, but a guy in a suit fighting fantasy creatures? Yeah, that's all right.
Here's the digital goodies you'll get if you pre-order Elite: Dangerous Posted: 12 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT While there's no firm release date, you can pre-purchase a copy of Elite: Dangerous from Frontier Developments. To sweeten the deal, if you order now you'll get some digital goodies like an extra Eagle Fighter ship which sounds like a handy thing to have lying around. There's also a Day One skin, digital art book, and players guide. If you decide you want to put your money where your mouth is, it'll cost you $50/£35/€40 which will save you a little bit on the final price of $59.99/£39.99/€49.99. t's worth nothing that buying early won't get you into the beta right now but considering there's still no firm release date, you're just as well waiting.
I've discovered a new go-to game for relaxing Posted: 12 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT I play videogames for many reasons. Sometimes, I play for the story -- the chance to visit new worlds and live out someone else's life. Other times, it's the sense of competition I find most alluring, or the chance to master a game's rules and finally overcome its fiercest challenges. But for every passing motivation to play games I have, I'll always been in need of one that can help me relax. Something to take my mind off life's problems, no matter how big or small they might be. Something I can get into for 15 minutes, or hours on end. Something that'll last. Right now, Endless Ocean: Blue World is that game for me, and what a gem it is.
Free Magicka 2 if you can do a better karaoke video than a dracula Posted: 12 Sep 2014 09:30 AM PDT Magicka 2 is upping the intentional weirdness in its trailers with Vlad the dracula singing karaoke, 90's internet aesthetics, and close ups of a cute dog. Not a bad look. There's also this website, which looks like a Geocities page and encourages you to download the track and lyrics and film your own karaoke music video for a chance to win a copy of Magicka 2 when it releases.
BioWare is working to specifically differentiate Dragon Age: Inquisition from Dragon Age II Posted: 12 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT When I entered BioWare's offices and had a chance to speak to the game's Executive Producer and Studio GM, I had one goal in mind -- to find out how Dragon Age: Inquisition was going to be more like Origins, and less like Dragon Age II. You'd expect a lot of Molyneuxian backpedaling when confronted with the idea that the last game was a letdown in many eyes, but the responses I received were genuine, with a real concern for learning from past mistakes, and a confident assurance of the game Inquisition could really become.
Use your 3DS as a controller for the Wii U Super Smash Bros. Posted: 12 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT More fun Smash Bros. tidbits. It appears you can use your 3DS as a controller for the Wii U version of the game when it releases. Kyle McLain tweeted this screen shot, followed by a tweet, "The text on the top screen says 'connect your 3DS with your Wii U to exchange customized characters, and you can use it as a controller.'" Suppose it's better than nothing if you're lacking in controllers, the equivalent of player four always getting stuck with the crappy little Mad Catz controller.
Posted: 12 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT Happy Friday! One of the more anticipated games of the year, Destiny, has finally launched. So far, it seems as though there is a very noticeable dividing line of people who are either loving every minute of it or those who are less than blown away by what they've played so far. Our own Chris Carter has been playing Destiny and has been reviewing it as he goes. I picked it up and have been playing it, and I definitely have an opinion on what I've played so far. Yep, I sure do have an opinion.... I am a little surprised though that there's only one person hosting it on the Xbox side of the fence, and curious as to how the sales are broken out between the two consoles.
Gigantic's alpha sign-up is live, you should probably get on that Posted: 12 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT If you're anxious to get an early start on Motiga's stunning new online team action game Gigantic, then I've got good news for you. The alpha testing phase has begun and the company is actively recruiting players to help out with that. Over the next few months the studio will be adding hundreds of players from the community to its weekly tests. As of right now, the alpha is only available to those in North America, but Motiga wants those outside the region to know they are not forgotten and will get access some time in the near future. The first step in the process is getting registered, and you can do that here. Once you get signed up you will be asked to verify your email address. After that, you should be good to go. Lastly, if you would like to increase your chances of being selected to participate in the alpha, the company would like you to upload your DxDiag. Instructions for doing so are included in the email. I'm already signed up and have my fingers crossed. With any luck, I hope to see you there!
We're getting the demo for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire too Posted: 12 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT Well, I'll be. The demo for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire isn't just coming to Japan. The Pokémon Company International isn't saying when or how codes will be distributed in the West yet, but this special demo will feature gameplay not found anywhere else, and players will be able to transfer "a familiar Pokémon" and items into the full games. There's also a new trailer showing off the Mega Evolutions for Camerupt, Sharpedo, and Gallade as well as Rayquaza, Groudon, and Kyogre. Those Primal Reversion moves are something else.
Club Nintendo Super Smash Bros. demo incoming, wide release next week Posted: 12 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT With all of the Super Smash Bros. reveals this week, I've gone from casual interest in the 3DS version to "I need this yesterday." But October 3 is so far away! Thankfully, we'll have the chance to play the demo soon -- Nintendo is giving out four redeemable codes to Club Nintendo members. In order to be eligible for this early demo, you'll need to have reached Platinum status between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014, have registered 3DS hardware or software, and opted in to receive emails from Club Nintendo. The three extra codes can be shared with anyone. The Club Nintendo demo has unlimited play, supports local multiplayer with folks who have redeemed their own demo, and features Mario, Link, Pikachu, Villager, and Mega Man plus the Battlefield stage. Everyone else can grab a wide-release Smash Bros. demo on the 3DS eShop beginning Friday, September 19 but it can only be opened 30 times.
Posted: 12 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT Consoles sporting nontraditional colors can be hit or miss, but I have to say, I'm liking this blue Xbox 360. It'll be available starting October 7 in the US at Walmart with Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and a 500GB hard drive packed in for $249. Two other holiday bundles are on the way. One is the same offer as the blue console, but in standard black, also priced at $249. The other is a 4GB Xbox 360 with Kinect, Kinect Sports, Kinect Adventures, and Forza Horizon for $249, available exclusively at Target in the US. Microsoft says "many of these offerings are shipping outside of the US as well." Introducing the Xbox 360 Holiday Lineup [Xbox]
Nintendo is streaming lots of Smash Bros. today Posted: 12 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT Nintendo's Treehouse team returns for an eight-hour stream today featuring Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Ultimate NES Remix, and Fantasy Life. That'll continue until 1:00pm Pacific at which point it's Super Smash Bros. 3DS time. Watch the stream right here, or on YouTube.
Blocktacular shooter Minimum leaves Steam Early Access, gets reduced price for launch Posted: 12 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT Atari and Human Head's MOBA-like third-person shooter Minimum is now out of Early Access, and to celebrate the event, the game's price has been reduced to $4.99 until September 17. New features available at launch include the addition of a co-op horde mode, device and skin customization, a new jungle-themed map called Alter of the Ancients, two new weapons, and a tutorial map vs. bots. Steam Item Trading and Trading Cards will be coming soon, but aren't available at launch. I've actually had my eye on this one for a while, but haven't taken the plunge yet due to the unfavorable Steam reviews I've been reading on it. Though, to be fair, the game has its share of favorable reviews as well. In any case, at less than five dollars I'll probably end up giving it a go because giant robots and dual wielding flaming swords. For a full rundown of what's included in version 4.0, you can check out the dev log here.
Bungie reveals upcoming Destiny events and free content through October Posted: 12 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT Since Bungie plans on supporting Destiny throughout the year and into 2015, free content updates and events will populate the universe in addition to the DLC expansions that are already announced. The first event is a Salvage PVP gametype, kicking off today and ending on Sunday. On September 16th the first raid will open up for level 26 players, and later this month a "Combined Arms" playlist will open -- a PVP mode that has lots of vehicles involved. Also in September something called "Queen's Wrath" is coming -- fans are speculating that this is a story mode mission, but it could be anything. Finally, in October the Iron Banner PVP mode will launch, which takes off the equalizer cap on PVP and lets players run wild with their crazy gear stats. I hope Destiny gets a lot of support over the coming weeks to keep players interested. Personally, I'm still more than happy with PVP and can see myself playing it for a long while.
Super Smash Bros. 3DS is getting a patch in Japan Posted: 12 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT Have you have your fill of Super Smash Bros. 3DS secret character spoilers yet? Try not to go on the internet for the next three weeks. In the meantime, we'll do our best to not spoil them for you. In other Smash news, a patch is being released in Japan for the game to smooth over some issues that players discovered at launch. Speaking of spoilers, a new World Map spectator mode will launch with the game, but be warned -- looking at this mode can spoil characters even if you haven't unlocked them yet. There's no word on whether or not other regions will be getting the patch, but you can probably count on a day-one update at this point. Sakurai [Miiverse]
Here's what Grand Theft Auto V looks like on PS4 Posted: 12 Sep 2014 03:45 AM PDT Grand Theft Auto V is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 18, Rockstar Games announced today. But just how much better does it look on the new consoles? This trailer captured via PS4 should give you a pretty good idea. Or maybe it won't.
Yondu and Falcon revealed for Disney Infinity 2.0 Posted: 12 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT Disney Infinity 2.0 is getting yet another set of figures it seems -- Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy and Falcon from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Of course these are mostly tie-ins with the films, but both did come from the comic source material, and Falcon in particular will don his original garb. Yondu looks spot-on like Michael Rooker's incarnation of the character. All we need now is a Norman Reedus figure and you can relive your wildest fantasies of playing with Merlin Derle.
Does your PS4 have a random disc eject problem? I hope not! Posted: 12 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT Sony has released a brand new video highlighting a specific issue with the PS4. How specific? It deals directly with the problem of your PS4 randomly ejecting discs or beeping constantly like it wants to eject something but can't. The solution is to hold down your PS4's power button, listen for two beeps, then wait approximately 30 seconds. Then, unplug your console for about three minutes. If it works, good! If not, according to Sony, "your console will need to be serviced."
| Grand Theft Auto V current-gen will launch on November 18, PC version coming next year Posted: 12 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT [Update: Rockstar has confirmed these details alongside of a November 18 release date for PS4 and Xbox One, and a January 27, 2015 date for PC. You'll get $1,000,000 in-game bonus cash if you pre-order, new vehicles are in, and GTA Online will have an increased player count (up to 30).] According to a leak from an attendee of the GameStop Manager's Conference in Anaheim California, the current-gen rework of Grand Theft Auto V is going to be massive. After seeing 30 minutes of gameplay, the attendee gave us a few details, such as "completely reworked foliage," "insane" draw distance increases including traffic flow and lights that aren't pre-rendered from a distance (like they are on Xbox 360 and PS3), and a completely redone water system. Animal counts and texture work is reworked, and Rockstar allegedly stated that they wanted to improve animal interaction a la Red Dead Redemption. For all these improvements to really take shape, development was supposedly started before GTA V's release. New content was briefly mentioned such as a new set of songs and more radio stations -- this was already confirmed previously by an in-game DJ voiceactor who stated that she was going back to the studio to record more voicework. No release date was given other than "soon." Of course, a lot of this could be pure hype, but it's nice to hear about details like real-time traffic and light effects. | PS4 sales still strong in August Posted: 12 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT PlayStation 4 sold the most among videogame consoles in August, according to the August NPD report, adding to the 10 million mark hit a month ago. For even more evidence of the console's large market share, Madden 15 on PS4 was the number one selling game of the month. This is at least better than people buying it en masse on PS3, because it is junk on PS3 (and 360). Well, at least Microsoft's $400 million dollar deal to make the Surface the official tablet of the NFL is probably, uh, doing something. Both Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Ultimate Evil Edition and Madden NFL 15 sold best on PS4. Last of Us: Remastered topped first-party sellers. What with the white Destiny bundle and the unexplainable interest in that game, I'm sure this will continue, unless the Wii U pulls off a miraculous, Smash-buoyed holiday season? |
Smash Bros. 3DS secret characters are pretty easy to unlock Posted: 12 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT I feel like, for everyone worried about being "spoiled" on the Super Smash Bros. secret characters, there was at least half a person lamenting having to, you know, play the game in order to unlock all of the characters. Some people just want to boot it up and have a smorgasbord to gorge on. Well, Nintendo seems to have settled for a middle ground that won't exactly satisfy anyone. I wasn't on either side -- fingers in ears or complaining about doing work -- and I'm kind of disappointed by the easy unlock conditions for its secret characters, as reported by SmaSoku (via EventHubs). Seems like a meager 120 matches will nab you the last secret character (of course, the one I want most). In Melee, the same amount only unlocked the first 2 out of 11.
Dying Light makes leaps and bounds in January 2015 Posted: 11 Sep 2014 07:00 PM PDT Dying Light will release worldwide in January 2015, developer Techland has announced. The zombie parkour game is hurtling to the Americas on January 27 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. It will then jump on over to Australia and New Zealand the next day, prior to landing in Europe and Asia on January 30.
| This Assassin's Creed toy is sort of nice, also awful Posted: 11 Sep 2014 05:30 PM PDT Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants hosted the organization's first-ever "Video Gamer Night" Wednesday ahead of a game with the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. Admission to the special event at AT&T Park came with an exclusive figure, designed by Todd McFarlane. The toy features depicts Assassin's Creed Unity protagonist Arno Dorian kitted out in orange and black with a Giants helmet and baseball bat. 100% Objective Opinion: The Halloween-themed getup looks awful. Just awful. Arno would be well advised to trade in those nasty rags for some Dodgers gear. Everyone looks better in blue.
