There's a Donkey Kong Country mod for Doom

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT

I sometimes forget just how crazy Doom modders can get. Here's a firm reminder.

This is a total-conversion mod by DooMero that, well, you see ... it's the Donkey Kong Country experience rebuilt in GZDoom. Which is to say it's a platformer using sprites and music from the SNES trilogy, not some half-assed first-person shooter with Kremlings running around.

To be clear, this doesn't look particularly fun, but I'm impressed all the same. Confused and impressed. Instructions are included in the YouTube description. Download over here.

Very Quick Tips: Destiny

Our Destiny review is coming along nicely. I just hit level 20 on my Warlock and I'm slowly making my way up to the soft cap of Light Level 25 to get raid-ready for next week.

Here are some tips I've come up with along the way to make everything easier.

Nintendo of Europe is giving out a free game to new 3DS players

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT

In Europe, Nintendo is running a "Nintendo 3DS Winter 2014 Bonus Game Promotion" in which folks who register a 2DS, 3DS, or 3DS XL as well as a copy of Super Smash Bros. and Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire can claim a free 3DS game via download:

  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • Yoshi's New Island
  • Kirby: Triple Deluxe
  • Mario Golf: World Tour
  • Mario Party: Island Tour
  • Pokémon Art Academy

Something to keep in mind for the holidays. You'll have until January 12 to register all of the necessary purchases through Club Nintendo before you can request a code for one of those titles.

There's no word on there being a similar promotion in North America, but this does remind me that I got distracted midway through Kirby: Triple Deluxe and really ought to finish it. Most fun I've had with a Kirby game in a good long while. In fact, I think I'll get back on that later today.

It's a good thing Gears of War: Tactics was canceled

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT

A few years back, it was repeatedly rumored that Gears of War would get a spinoff game built around Kinect. The project never came to fruition and that's seemingly for the best, if this alpha footage of Gears of War: Tactics from VG Leaks is anything to go by.

Like, I understand that it's an early build and we're not seeing much of anything here, but that's irrelevant -- a real-time strategy title controlled via Kinect just sounds unappealing.

Frankly, I'm surprised this ever made it into production.

Killer collaboration: Payday 2 is getting Hotline Miami DLC

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 09:30 AM PDT

Overkill Software and Dennaton Games are teaming up for Payday 2 DLC based on Hotline Miami.

It's unclear what all is included here beyond a heist -- they can get away with offering the slimmest of details and we'll still be interested -- but the add-on hits Steam on September 30, 2014.

According to an FAQ, Overkill went for this "because we ... f***ing love Hotline Miami."

Works for me! There's a trailer, too. Give it a moment and you shall be rewarded.

Review in Progress: Destiny (update)

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT

[Since a large part of Destiny is found within the raid system upon reaching max level, we'll be publishing a Review in Progress for the game over the course of a few weeks. Here are our thoughts about the live version.]

Destiny finally landed this week, and based off my initial impressions, my first foray into the world Bungie built was mixed. Having worked my way up to level 11 at that point, I was mostly experiencing the basic game modes and enjoying PVP quite a bit, but I was very disappointed in the story.

I have a better idea of what to expect now after reaching the max level of 20, and while I'm having fun, I'm still not blown away with what Bungie has given us so far.

Adventure Time Game Wizard has a pretty cool level editor

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT

There's a new game coming out based on everybody's favorite television show, Adventure Time! You know what that means right? Go on and grab your friends, because we're going to some very distant la---actually, you might want to rethink going on this adventure.

Adventure Time Game Wizard's biggest strength is in its content creator. Using the iPad camera, you can scan in any level you've drawn out on a piece of graph paper, or you can draw directly in-game. From there, you can choose a themed backdrop based on the show including the Snow Kingdom, Candy Kingdom, and others.

There's a set of simple shapes and outlines you can draw, each corresponding to a type of platform. Want a lava pit? Just make two vertical shafts with zig zags in between. Need a moving platform? Just sketch out a striped rectangle.

There are a good number of platform types you can draw and combine to create your own levels, and Game Wizard offers an intuitive guide for all the shapes you can use. They never get more complicated than what you can trace on graph paper, and even when I didn't draw perfect lines, the scanner was always capable of translating past those errors.

Shigeru Miyamoto made an animated Pikmin short film

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Famed Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto has produced an animated short based on the Pikmin series that will debut at the 27th Tokyo International Film Festival next month.

The film, Pikmin Short Movies, is made up of three episodes: "'The Night Juicer,' in which Captain Olimar makes his favorite juice; 'Treasures in a Bottle,' in which Pikmin meet a strange treasure; 'Occupational Hazards,' a big adventure at a construction site."

Following the screening on October 25, Miyamoto will give a talk with Nobuo Kawakami, the Chairman of Dwango and a producer-trainee at Studio Ghibli, at TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi.

I'll be hugely disappointed if the short doesn't eventually end up online. Pikmin seems like such a terrific fit for the medium and I'd be especially curious to see how Miyamoto's talents translate. In an ideal world, we'd get a feature-length clay-animated film.

Metal Gear Solid V pre-TGS tease: Quiet jumps from a helicopter, goes invisible

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT

...And that's it. Well, there are some angry raccoon eyes at the end, too.

Wait. Clearly the soldiers see the helicopter above them. And Quiet doesn't even turn invisible until she's mid-fall. Why even turn invisible at that point? To show off? It's like a needlessly flashy version of the Ghost in the Shell intro, which I would link except that it has boobs and also I can only find the Ghost in the Shell 2.0 video with CGI that makes my eyes sad.

I hope I have GitS on DVD somewhere because I really want to watch it now.

But I did just notice the handcuffs so maybe she was being carted away from Mother Base for some reason and then decided to show how cool she was when the helicopter is in the air? Who knows. I want this game

Titan Souls is my PAX Prime 2014 game of show

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 07:15 AM PDT

Confession time: I'm pretty out of the loop when it comes to the indie game scene. I love me some Nidhogg, Samurai Gunn, and Crawl, but it's not uncommon for me to have only heard about these games just before release or later. With that track record, you won't be surprised to hear that I knew nothing about Titan Souls before sitting down with it at PAX.

I am so glad that I did, though. Between the music, art, and the brilliantly challenging combat, Titan Souls is far and away one of my most anticipated releases.

Beware of Super Smash Bros. secret character spoilers (update)

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 07:05 AM PDT

I remember some of voi got all upset when we (okay, me) posted pictures of the final evolution of the new Pokemon starters. The unlockable Smash Bros. characters are probably an even bigger "spoiler," then. So, hey, here's a heads up from your pal, Steven.

A lot of people in Japan got their hands on the game. Some people are streaming it (some at insane volumes that blew out my headphones and my head, which still feels not so great). Some people have started unlocking characters.

Adam Freeman's Berzerk-influenced Hazard is pretty snazzy, also completely free

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT

What if Berzerk were reborn as a first-person shooter using the DarkPlaces engine? What if the soundtrack were crafted by electronic music producer Wolfgun? What if you could be playing this game, right now, for free?

The answers to all these questions and more can be found on talented Australian indie developer Adam Freeman's IndieDB page.

Described as a love letter to the classic game Berzerk with just a dash of Tron, Hazard, is a stylish-looking first-person shooter that reminds me of Early Access titles Heavy Bullets and Black Ice. If you'd like to see the game in motion, you can check out the footage that was recently featured in episode twenty-three of Fork's Indie Bytes series.

I'm not sure if it's the '80s-vision-of-cyberspace aesthetic or if it's the outstanding soundtrack that it is paired with that makes this project so appealing to me. In any case, this game is definitely worthy of a look. Besides, it's free. What have you got to lose?

I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye on Freeman's work in the future. If this is just a prototype/proof-of-concept, I can't wait to see what he'll put together as his first full-fledged game.

Also, if you get a chance, make sure to give the Wolfgun cover of Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon" a listen. It's pretty great.

Driveclub will be getting lots of free DLC

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT

Driveclub will be getting a fair amount of DLC according to developer Evolution Studios. While the game will launch with 25 tracks, seven more will hit as free DLC over time.

In addition, a new car will appear for free every month for a year. Of course there will be paid DLC as well, with no pricepoint in mind -- though you can pick up the season pass for $25.

For all the info see the chart below for what I call "the wheel of DLC."

Here are the first screens for the Typing of the Dead-esque Fantasy: World Wide Words

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Yesterday we delivered word of a game called Final Fantasy: World Wide Words, which sort of plays like Typing of the Dead. Thankfully we now have an idea of what the game looks like thanks to a few screens out in the wild, and it seems to heavily borrow from Theatrhythm's chibi style artwork.

Expect the game to hit Japan on September 16th on Android, with an iOS version to follow. The game is free-to-play, and of course has DLC/IAP to buy.

Hajime No Ippo is coming to the PS3, looks like Punchout!!

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT

Bandai Namco is publishing a new Hajime No Ippo game for the PS3, and this new trailer shows that they're absolutely nailing the feel of the manga. The only problem is, despite how authentic this trailer looks, they haven't shown any real gameplay yet.

Thankfully Famitsu has a single screen, and it looks like Punchout!! Since the PS3 is region free I may give this one an import.

League of Legends getting arena-like Ascension mode

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Riot Games revealed a new ogame mode this week for League of Legends -- Ascension. You'll basically be working together to defeat Xerath, located at the center of the map. Once defeated, you'll earn extra stats, a less cooldown bonus, and infinite mana. It is possible to beat the new ascended character though, since healing effects operate at 50%.

Essentially this is a more pared down arena mode, mixing things up a bit from the tower-centric ARAM. We'll see if it sticks.

Dragon Quest out now for iOS and Android devices

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT

The original Dragon Quest is now available on iOS and Android devices for $2.99 / £1.99 / €2.69.

The classic NES role-playing game was first released in Japan by Enix in 1986, and was localized for North American audiences as Dragon Warrior in 1989. The title is often credited for popularizing the genre, and was successful enough to convince then rival developer Square to greenlight the original Final Fantasy.

Today's mobile release marks the title's first official release in Europe, and includes a number of changes to the visuals and user interface to better suit the platform.

Mega Man will be appearing at the Hanayashiki theme park in Japan

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT

Every so often Capcom decides that it's time to parade Mega Man around, reminding us that they used to pump out a ton of good games for him while they sit back and collect royalties.

The next really cool not-Mega Man game event is a promotion involving a Japanese theme park called Hanayashiki. On September 13th through October 26th, you'll be able to buy special Mega Man themed merchandise, as well as eat at the "Wily" cafe and enjoy special food.

Check out the gallery below for some awesome pictures. I really want to be there.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure HD has been delisted on the Xbox Live Arcade

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT

It's  a sad day when something gets delisted on a digital storefront. In terms of physical media we don't really have anything comparable, as so many copies are generally out in the wild after any release -- even the rare games still exist.

Well this week Jojo's Bizarre Adventure HD has been delisted on the Xbox Live Arcade. No reason has been given why, but the game no longer exists on the market -- the PSN version is still standing.

As is the case with most delistings, current owners can still download the game.

Here are all the Smash Bros. color variants, including a bad one

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT

People have their hands on the full 3DS Super Smash Bros. and all sorts of fun is coming from that, including a breakdown of all the alternate color variants for non-secret characters.

Quick, open the full image (it's massive), browse a bit, then come back and see if you've predicted which one annoys me.

There are some neat ones. Daisy Peach is funny. We already knew Samus has some nice ones. Tan, headband Pikachu is sweet. Hoodie and wireframe Little Mac are neat. Some fly dressing Captain Falcons. Okay, so which one am I being whiny about? Did you guess American Flag Mario? If you did, you are right.

I want to pull a Vlade Divac and rip that god damn flag from his chest.

Review: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy was a very nice surprise. After many people had become disenfranchised with the series due to a number of mishaps and weak core entries, Theatrhythm reminded us that Square still had reverence for all of its classic characters, and of course -- its timeless music.

As a sequel, Curtain Call doesn't really change a whole lot from its predecessor, shortcomings and all, but it does pack in a whopping 221 songs on top of the already winning formula.

Revolver 360 RE:ACTOR shoots up PC tomorrow

Posted: 10 Sep 2014 11:00 PM PDT

Revolver 360 RE:ACTOR launches its attack on PC tomorrow for $9.99, Playism announced today.

The shoot-'em-up comes by way of doujin studio Cross Eaglet, and is most notable for its eponymous swivel mechanic. The title allows players to strategically rotate the world, giving them the ability to dodge oncoming fire, line up enemies for deadly attacks, and find hidden items.

A version of the shooter launched on the Xbox Live Indie Games platform in 2011. Since then it's come to PC in Japan and will soon be available in English. Revolver 360 has also been announced for PlayStation 4, but there's been no official word as to when that's happening.
