| The new Danganronpa looks absolutely insane Posted: 10 Sep 2014 04:00 PM PDT Spike Chunsoft has shared another trailer for Danganronpa: Another Episode and it's pretty much pure madness. The PlayStation Vita title is set to release in Japan come September 25. No yet word regarding a potential western release, but we will be sure to keep you apprised. In the meantime, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is out now across North America and Europe. |
| Sony cutting access to PS Store for many PSP users Posted: 10 Sep 2014 02:45 PM PDT PlayStation Portable users in several regions will soon lose access to the PlayStation Store, IGN reports. Starting September 15, the device's shop will no longer function in Europe, Oceania, Asia, and parts of Africa. Digital content will still be available for purchase via the Sony Entertainment Network online store, and can always be downloaded via the system's download list. North American PSP users will still have access to the storefront, but the writing is on the wall. Sony is reallocating its resources elsewhere as it slowly puts a legacy platform out to pasture. Still, the venerable machine has a couple titles left in the pipeline. XSEED has announced plans to localize Nihon Falcom role-players Brandish: The Dark Revenant and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter for release on PSP later this year. | Sing your heart out with The Voice Posted: 10 Sep 2014 01:15 PM PDT Let me preface this post by saying that I don't watch The Voice, or any of those other horrific singing shows. But I do sing a lot in my spare time. Not great or anything, but I do it for fun. And there aren't enough karaoke games anymore now that there's no more Rock Band tracks to look forward to. That's why I'm so excited about Activision's upcoming karaoke game based on The Voice. I couldn't give any less of a damn that it's about The Voice or that it features Blind Auditions and Battle Rounds culminating in a Finale so that you might be named "The Voice." I can't be bothered with the fact that it has Party Mode, Voice Coach Mode, and it's officially licensed as the show's video game adaptation. What I care about is singing. And it had better have some decent songs. There are some decidedly scant details right now surrounding the game, and to be honest it looks like hot garbage on a sweltering hot day, but it's another chance to sing with my friends. It's even coming out on systems all the way back to the Wii. I want it to be good, but I think we all know it's going to be a sad little cash grab. Maybe, just maybe, it won't feature that terrifying little goblin Meghan Trainor and her "booty" or Taylor Swift. And Activision? If you're listening, please don't include any more live versions of songs we love, like Band Hero's "Take A Picture" from Filter. That was awful. The Voice is releasing October 21. |
| Final Fantasy XIII on a phone? Square launching Dive In streaming app Posted: 10 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT Square Enix is launching a new service in Japan on October 9. Dive In streams games to Android and Apple mobile devices, allowing players to experience titles like Final Fantasy XIII on cellphones. The service is launching with Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy VII International, and Season of Mystery: The Cherry Blossom Murders, all with different rental rates for ranges between three days (~$1.50-$2.50) and one year (~$11-$17). Free 30 minute trials of all Dive In titles will be available, too. November will add Final Fantasy VIII and The Last Remnant, December will add Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Murdered: Soul Suspect, 2015 will add Lightning Returns. | Destructoid shirts now going for $14.95 Posted: 10 Sep 2014 11:30 AM PDT All t-shirts on the Destructoid store have been dropped down to $14.95! We've lowered the price, saving you a few bucks. Hoodies are still between $24.95 to $34.95, and as always you'll get free shipping worldwide on orders over $60. These are also going to be the last run prints on all the designs we have in the store currently. So once they're gone they'll be gone for good! Now's a good time to pick something up before the avalanche of conventions hit like PAX Prime, Dragon Con, and more. |
| Nintendo wants to tempt you with two other 3DS XL designs Posted: 10 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT Just when you thought you were ready to jump ship for a new 3DS, Nintendo announces several more systems in an attempt to sway you into buying yet another 3DS XL you don't need. And that's not even counting the sweet Persona Q model that Dale told you about earlier. There's already been about four that I've almost hopped on, but I've been able to hold out this far. First up will be quite familiar, as we've heard tell of it across the internet for some time. The Super Smash Bros. Edition will go on sale on September 19 for $199 in preparation for the October 3 launch of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, and it's bright red, emblazoned with the cast of characters from the game. Unfortunately, the system does not come with the game. Bummer. Also, you'll only be able to get it at GameStop. Second, we've got what could have been a gorgeous NES design that's marred by having the entire NES controller on the lid. The inside looks okay, but they really screwed up by making it this unattractive. Had they, as our own Kyle had suggested, made the lid look like the NES like the Game Boy Advance SP, it would have really made a splash. Instead, it's a little disappointing now, even though the inside is pretty cool. It's coming to GameStop as an exclusive on October 10. So, yeah. You'll have to go to GameStop for these. Sorry. |
| Nicalis kicked my ass again with Castle in the Darkness Posted: 10 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT After checking out The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth at PAX Prime, I spent a decent chunk of time with another upcoming Nicalis project, Castle in the Darkness. It's a challenging platform-adventure PC game that feels all too appropriate given the company's prior involvement with 1001 Spikes. Admittedly, words like "challenging" and "difficult" get thrown around often -- too often -- when describing games that aren't afraid to test players. But good lord, Castle in the Darkness was tough. I must have died 50 times during my playthrough, and that's being conservative. Part of that has to do with your limited health -- a few hits is enough to do you in, at least early on -- and your knight's movement, which takes getting used to. He's quick, super quick, and his initial sword attack doesn't extend very far. It was frustrating at first to come to terms with all of this, but I suspect the fast pace will feel great with sufficient practice and muscle memory. The game's structure is exploration-based in that you'll hit switches and acquire items that will allow you to reach previously inaccessible areas. There's also going to be a ton of bosses, based on what I played. That damn owl from the trailer gave me hell. Expect gear upgrades, too. Castle in the Darkness is rather clearly inspired by NES classics in the genre, particularly Castlevania, which I don't consider to be a negative. Maybe you do. Either way, I'd suggest getting your hands on it before casting any final judgments. Could be pretty cool at the right price. |
| Joylancer, the love letter to the Game Boy, will hit Early Access in October 26th Posted: 10 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT Joylancer has been on my radar for quite a while now. It's an independent production that seeks to recreate the great feeling of the Game Boy era, with a solid platforming and combat engine to boot. Although pre-orders have been live on the game's site for a while, there hasn't been any word on a full release -- until now. The developer has just sent us word that it will be hitting Early Access on October 26th on Steam. Development will continue throughout October with more updates, with a target of a full release in January. Free post-release updates are planned. It'll be priced at $10 for Early Access, with a pricepoint of "$15-20" for January. Why early access? According to the team, "Early Access will allow us to bring players an extended taste of what the final version of Joylancer will be like, using a variety of experimental modes and tweaks and designing around comments and suggestions from players. Joylancer on Early Access also means that we'll be able to get some money coming in to help with further development of the game, allowing us to take it to even better places than before." In addition to a new trailer, the upcoming build of the game will feature more levels, modes, and enemies, including a horde mode, and a higher difficulty level that requires you to beat the game in one life. You can keep up with the development process here. |
| PoPoLoCrois Farm Story's farm elements are more of a side quest Posted: 10 Sep 2014 09:30 AM PDT In a recent issue of Famitsu magazine, more details were revealed about Marvelous' new game that combines the popular anime/manga franchise PoPoLoCrois and Harvest Moon, PoPoLoCrois Farm Story. PoPoLoCrois Farm Story is to be a light-humored tale that focuses on Prince Pietro, who just turned ten yeas old, and his encounters in the world of PoPoLoCrois. While the game will have farming aspects, it will focus on a more traditional RPG experience while you follow Pietro on his adventure to save the world. The battle system will be command-based and players' attacks and skills will depend on the type of weapon equipped. The party members revealed so far are Pietro, a forest witch named Narcia, the lawful good White Knight, and the "demon lord of evil" GamiGami Devil. As players progress they will open up the farming aspect, which will work similarly to past Harvest Moon games. There is no release date set for PoPoLoCrois Farm Story, but it is currently in development for Nintendo 3DS. PoPoLoCrois Farm Story Has A Bit Of A Leisurely Harvest Moon Side To It [Siliconera] |
| After two straight hours of Fortnite, I'm a fan Posted: 10 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT When Epic first announced Fortnite, I was on board based on the premise of defending player-made forts from monsters. But that was a couple of years ago. Things change. My interest had been waning up until recently, when I got to spend two hours with the "action building" game during PAX Prime. Mechanically, it's like a mix of the third-person shooting and trap-laying defense of Orcs Must Die! with the scavenging and construction of Minecraft. Pretty damn good combination, then. |
| Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies is out of control Posted: 10 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT As previously covered, Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies is a real game. It's not out yet, but it will be out on Steam soon enough -- an open beta is scheduled to go live on September 23. I was already toying around with the idea of playing this for the novelty factor but now that I've seen the ridiculous screenshots, I'm committed. And looking over the description, it seems as if Nexon was determined to throw everything it could into the game. Boss fights, base building and defense, Bazooka mode, Football mode ... matter of fact, there are more than 20 modes in total. Games sure are stupid sometimes, but that's okay. More than okay, actually. |
| Kodoku Chronicles hits Kickstarter and Steam Greelight Posted: 10 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT Kodoku Chronicles by Carnivore Games is a horror visual novel which focuses on the terror and dangers that lurk on Kodoku Island. In fact, you've probably already seen it before -- Dale called it "groooooosssss." I looked at it and squealed with glee. 'Cause I'm depraved, I guess. The game hopes to be a blend of traditional Japanese folklore and the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Expect gore and surrealistic horror aplenty as the protagonists move closer to the mysteries that Kodoku Island holds. Combat mechanics are simplistic yet involve a bit of strategy. Players will have to balance their HP and luck stats to destroy monsters. Enemies will have weaknesses to certain spells which make up the mainstay of the player's arsenal. Spells drain luck, which players can boost by spending HP. The game is currently pre-alpha, with a basic version already running on several platforms. The developers hope to bring this game to PC, Mac, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and iOS. You can back this game on Kickstarter or vote for it on Steam Greenlight now. In the meantime, I'm going to drool over these screenshots. |
| Double Fine's Hack 'n' Slash 1.0 has been released on Steam Posted: 10 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT Hack 'n' Slash by Double Fine Productions had its beginnings during Amnesia Fortnight 2012, in which it received the most votes of any concept to be made into a full game. Now, it's finally complete, having left Steam Early Access with the release of Hack 'n' Slash version 1.0. Hack 'n' Slash features novel gameplay in which players control an elf named Alice armed with a "USB sword" that, in addition to having use as an actual sword, can also interact with objects to alter their parameters. The new update introduces the final act of the game, Steam Workshop integration, and additional puzzles. It's available now on Steam for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS. Hack 'n' Slash 1.0 [Steam] |
| Half of PC gamers will wait for a sale before buying games Posted: 10 Sep 2014 07:15 AM PDT If there's one phrase you get used to hearing when talking about PC games, it's "I'll wait for a bundle or sale." It's common knowledge if you wait a while, you can get a better price through places like Steam, Green Man Gaming, or various bundles. This has been backed up by a new NPD report that confirms many PC gamers don't buy a game until there's a price drop. The Understanding PC Gaming 2014 report polled over 6,000 people in the USA from the age of nine and up and found that just 46% of those questioned bought PC games digitally, which feels really low. Of that 46%, most were "far less likely" to pay the full price for a PC game. If you look at the current Humble Bundle, it's offering over $100 worth of games for just $10 if you buy at the top tier. True, almost all of the games came out in 2013 but if you're patient, then you've got a great deal on your hands. (Steven is right -- you all should play Gunpoint) It's hard to argue with gamers wanting to show patience to save some money; I'm on a fairly tight budget myself so I know I'm not able to afford many games at launch. As the NPD remarks, publishers and developers need to adjust their expectations about how well a game will sell at launch and instead look at a longer term viewpoint. | Try not to think about cantaloupe while playing The Evil Within Posted: 10 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT I get such a kick out of seeing how things are made, especially when the people making said things are having a blast. This behind-the-scenes footage for The Evil Within is exactly what I'm talking about. We're given a glimpse into a day in the life of sound designer Masahiro Izumi. What's it take to create a "biting" sound effect for a horror game? Cantaloupe and an empty stomach. Then come the mouthfuls of marshmallows, chips, and noodles. "I'm too full to do any more." | More Mega Evolutions: Camerupt, Sharpedo, and Gallade Posted: 10 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT Japanese magazine CoroCoro has the scoop on three more Mega Evolutions debuting in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, as picked up by Serebii.net. Camerupt's new form is my favorite of the trio -- that grin! Mega Sharpedo looks edgier and has more fins, which is all right. Mega Gallade is ... I actually had to go look up a picture of regular Gallade to get a true sense of what had changed. (It's the arms.) Also, next month's issue of CoroCoro will contain a code redeemable for a trial version of Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire. What are the chances the rest of the world will get something like that? Non-existent? Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire - CoroCoro [Serebii.net] |
| The pen is mightier than the sword in the latest Final Fantasy mobile game Posted: 10 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT The latest Final Fantasy mobile spin-off title (not pictured above, as there are currently no assets) will have players fighting enemies Typing of the Dead style. In Final Fantasy World Wide Words, players will fight enemies by inputting the letters of the words that appear as quickly as they can. The game will feature characters and enemies from the entire series. It will also feature leveling up and abilities as well as a "Decoration" feature that allows players to add words to those on screen to increase their attack power. Final Fantasy World Wide Words will launch in Japan on September 16 for Android and sometime soon for iOS, according to an upcoming issue of Famitsu. Edit: Eagle-eyed reader killias2 has pointed out that this game may be a free-to-play title, as evidenced by the original Japanese source. It looks like the game will be governed by "stamina," which means there will likely be limits imposed on players, as those types of games tend to do. | Persona Q Edition of Nintendo 3DS coming to U.S. Posted: 10 Sep 2014 05:03 AM PDT We get some of the limited edition 3DS systems but we miss out on the better ones in USA. But this one makes up for it all. Nintendo will release the Persona Q 3DS XL here, exclusively at GameStop. $199 will get you this Velvet Room-themed system, sold as a hardware-only release. In other words, keep your Persona Q pre-order! Atlus says that the Persona Q 3DS XL will be available in limited quantities. Get your preorder in! As for the game, look for its release on November 25. I hear it's pretty good. WANT. |
| Youll play Skullduggery greedily, whether fast or slow Posted: 10 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT Flick, flick, flick. That’s all you’ll be doing in Skullduggery. Flicking to collect treasure. Flicking to outrun bosses. Flicking to line up stealthy headshots on unsuspecting enemies. You can play the game however you want (usually) -- fast or slow; just know that you’ll be flicking the whole time. And, if the build we saw at PAX Prime is any indication, it’s a flicking good time. Skullduggery’s a title developed for tablets that borrows liberally from the simple mechanic that Rovio (maybe) popularized. By pulling back and letting go, players launch a skull across the screen. Do this ad nauseum, and you have Skullduggery. However, instead of an interspecies vendetta against pigs, this game’s protagonist has a goal that’s much easier to empathize with: riches. |
| Mega Man X5 is out on PSN, X6 release not as likely Posted: 10 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT Mega Man X5 is out now on the PSN for $5.99 as a PSOne Classic, and will run on your PS3 and Vita. It has some problems, but overall I enjoyed the game quite a bit, especially the kickass soundtrack. X6 on the other hand isn't nearly as good, and likely won't come to the PSN. Based on a discussion on the Capcom Unity message boards, Mega Man X6 has to alleviate a number of legal issues before seeing a release, most notably for two Japanese songs ("Moon Light" and "The Answer") as well as voice acting contracts. It seems as if the big problem is leaving in two songs from the Japanese version as opposed to creating new ones for the western edition (like X4 and X5, which were in the clear). I remember how awesome it was back in the day to get voice acting as well as a full soundtrack in a game, but I'm not as keen about it now if it interferes with a re-release for a new generation to enjoy. |
| Watch Dogs for Wii U now has a potential release date (Update) Posted: 10 Sep 2014 04:20 AM PDT [Update: Ubisoft has confirmed to Destructoid that Watch Dogs will be available on Wii U on November 18.] I know a number of people are still patiently waiting for Watch Dogs to hit the Wii U before they play it. Yep, just patiently waiting...waiting...and waiting. After months of nebulous "we'll release it when we're ready" statements from Ubisoft, their Mexico branch may have just spilled the beans. According to a post, "the wait is coming to an end" with a November 18 release. We've reached out to Ubisoft for comment, but for now it seems highly likely that November is the current target. | Resident Evil: Revelations 2 will be an episodic series Posted: 10 Sep 2014 04:15 AM PDT Resident Evil: Revelations 2 will be released as an episodic series, Capcom revealed today. The survival horror adventure is divided into four installments, which see anti-bioterrorist agents Claire Redfield and Moira Burton attempt to escape from a detention facility teeming with monstrosities. The episodes will be available piecemeal for $5.99. A season pass with added content will also be on offer for $24.99. And upon completion of the season, a boxed retail version with even more features still will be sold with for $39.99. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is coming to PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC in early 2015. |
| Check out exactly how the Wii U GamePad will work in Fatal Frame Posted: 10 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT We know that Fatal Frame is coming to the Wii U, but now we can get a better look at how the GamePad will actually influence gameplay. Based on the trailer, you'll be using it as the iconic camera in the series, as well as a scanning tool to look for items and ghosts. While I'm not a huge fan of the "holding up the Wii U GamePad" style constantly, I think it fits the theme of Fatal Frame, and would love to see it first-hand. |
| Dragon Quest X sales and shipments stopped for 3DS temporarily Posted: 10 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT Dragon Quest X hit the 3DS in Japan, and it did so well that Square Enix is temporarily halting the shipments of the game. Wait, what? Due to a huge number of players flooding into the game at the same time, as well as the strain that the 3DS puts on the servers themselves (it needs to stream the game with cloud servers rather than actually run it), Square Enix is having a ton of problems with the servers. So rather than continue to sell the game so the issue gets even worse (cough, Battlefield 4, cough), the company is freezing shipments so it can fix the problem faster. It's a pretty gutsy move for a publisher to make, but it's definitely appreciated. ニンテンドー3DS版「ドラゴンクエストX」に関するお知らせ [Square Enix via Siliconera] |
| Destiny's already made a ton of money, but you probably could've guessed that Posted: 10 Sep 2014 03:15 AM PDT Every now and then, when a videogame launches and does mega numbers, the publisher likes to toot its own horn a little bit. It should come as no surprise that this is the case with Destiny -- after all it was [synonym for "destined"] all along, right? Activision sent out a tidy little press release outlining just how well Bungie's new game has performed so far. In just first day stats, Destiny shipped more than $500 million. That's a lot of moon bucks. It's enough for Activision to give it the distinction of being the most successful new videogame franchise launch of all-time (if we're using first day sales as the metric to determine such things). Likewise, Destiny's the highest selling first day digital console release ever -- a record that isn't very old at all, and will likely fall once consumer adoption of current consoles increases. Regardless, it's still $500 million, and that's nothing to scoff at. Activision projects that Destiny will be its next billion dollar franchise. Halfway there ain't a bad start. |
| Arkham Knight will be a PS4 exclusive in Japan Posted: 10 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT When next July hits, Arkham Knight will hit the Japanese market, but as a PS4 exclusive in that region. According to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Japan, the game will not be launching on other platforms. If you live in Japan you can pre-order it on September 17th, and as a side note - there will be full Japanese voiceovers. This probably isn't a huge "get" since Batman isn't the biggest thing in Japan, but it's a nice win for Sony. | Xbox One Japanese launch sales are just terrible Posted: 10 Sep 2014 01:30 AM PDT Xbox One sold 23,562 units in Japan during its opening week, Famitsu reports, while data tracking firm Media Create estimates a total of 25,674. The numbers are ugly no matter how you slice them. For reference, the Wii U and PlayStation 4 both moved more than 300,000 units in their Japanese debuts, while Xbox 360 launch figures in the country topped 60,000 in 2005. Japan's best-selling Xbox One game thus far is Titfanfall, with 22,416 copies sold. Kinect Sports Rivals and Dead Rising 3 trail at number two and three with 14,191 and 7,330 sales, respectively. 【速報】Xbox Oneの初週販売台数は23562台 ソフトの1位は『タイタンフォール』に [Famitsu] |
| LEGO Batman 3 will get the first LEGO Season Pass ever Posted: 10 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham will drop in November, and alongside of it, a season pass. This is the first ever season pass for a LEGO game, and will run you $14.99 for six total add-ons. The pass will launch on every platform except Wii U, 3DS, and Vita. Three of the DLCS are announced now -- the Dark Knight pack, the Batman 75th anniversary pack, and the Man of Steel pack -- all of which will have a story mission plus free play modes, as well as extra characers. The other three DLCs haven't been announced yet, but you can buy each individually for $2.99. |
