Crush zombies in endurance racer Dead End

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Released today for iOS, Android and Windows Phones, Dead End is an endurance racing game in which players strike zombies to earn cash while avoiding road hazards. Earned money can then be spent on upgrades to the car, allowing for longer and more profitable runs.

It's not bad. The game offers touch or tilt controls (I found the latter made the game unplayable) and a healthy number of unlockables. There's a combo system for hitting zombies that works pretty well too, as aggressively plowing into one undead after another will coat the windshield in blood and make seeing obstacles much harder the more you score.

Dead End is free to download, but limits the player on how far they can travel before having to pony up $1.99 to unlock the full version and keep driving.

Ultra Street Fighter IV will be playable at PAX East

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Ultra Street Fighter IV will be playable at PAX East next weekend. You'll have to go to the Machinima booth to play it, as Capcom won't have a booth presence otherwise. Meanwhile over at the Twitch booth, you'll be able to watch pros compete in the Capcom Pro Tour.

While we're on the subject of Street Fighter, Virgin Gaming's Street Fighter Online Series kicks off on April 8. Players in North America, South America, and Europe will be able to participate in regional online tournaments, and the top 16 from each region will be awarded points towards the overall Capcom Pro Tour standings.

See what it took for Mega64 to make Kutaragi's Way

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

As in years past, Mega64 made some videos for the Game Developers Conference. This year in particular was really special, as they were able to get Ken "Father of PlayStation" Kutaragi himself to be involved. The team had a tight production schedule with two weeks to film this, along with their other GDC videos. All the parts with Ken Kutaragi was especially tricky, as they only had 30 minutes to film with him.

Also Garrett licks an expired condom.

There's a game called Tentacles: Enter the Mind

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 01:00 PM PDT

"Tentacles: Enter the Mind is a completely new take on the Tentacles universe and mechanic from the award winning Tentacles: Enter the Dolphin."

Never before have I felt so utterly out of the loop. Who came up with that name -- ultimately deciding to stick with it for a second title -- and why have I never heard of any of this before today?

The more I read about Enter the Mind, the less I understand. You play as a tentacled monster exploring the "Libido to the Super-Ego and beyond" of a "mad scientist with a dolphin head who's obsessed with making the world a cuter place." Oh.

This is being developed by Max: The Curse of Brotherhood's Press Play for Windows 8 PC and RT devices with a scheduled early summer release. Looks kind of fun, honestly.

Hearthstone rolling out to iPad in some regions today

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 12:30 PM PDT

If you've been happily lapping up all the Hearthstone goodness since its inception, you've probably been looking forward to the iPad version to take the show on the road. Well, my United States brethren, keep waiting! Today, the Hearthstone iPad rollout begins with Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, with other regions to follow.

It's not all bad. When we get it here (and everywhere else) expect to have the same features from the PC versions handy, just a little less tactile. Anywhere you can get online you can log in, collect cards, play against your friends, or access Play or Arena modes. What's more, your user data and card collection is shared across all of your devices, so you don't have to worry about making progress at home only to have to start over on the go.

Blizzard explains the idea behind launching Hearthstone in a limited number of regions at a time is to "focus on the end-to-end player experience" and not because they just want us to be miserable, also adding that there isn't too much longer to wait before more of us can get our grubby little paws on it. That's great, because my Pokémon cards are getting a little bent and I need something else for on-the-go domination.

Edit: Download links to Australia, Canada, and New Zealand here

Tropico 5 hits PC in May with other versions to follow

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Kalypso Media has nailed down a May 23, 2014 release date for the PC launch of its latest city-builder, Tropico 5, and launched a new website. Go on, El Presidente. Take a look.

Next up, it's the Mac and Xbox 360 versions which are set to arrive this summer, followed by a release on PlayStation 4 in autumn. Kalypso is also among those companies planning support for SteamOS once Steam Machines become widely available.

I've flirted with the idea of getting into Tropico, but I've resisted the call thus far -- city-building games like this are usually a Saturday-long investment in which entire meals are skipped. One of these days a Steam sale will change that and I'll almost certainly be all in for the series.

PSA: Sonic CD is free for Android for 7 more hours

Apparently-controller-compatible Sonic CD is Amazon's free Android app of the day for about seven more hours. This staggering deal will literally save you dollars compared to the usual $3 price tag.

Titanfall tips: Sneaky robot tricks

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

[Dtoid community blogger Wrenchfarm shares some tips from his first few weeks with Titanfall. Want to see your own blog appear on our front page? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon]

I've been playing a LOT of Titanfall over the past weeks, snuffing out Grunts and dropping Titans every chance I get. Titanfall is an insane game and between the high-flying pilots, the pitiless robotic Titans, game changing perks, weapons, and burn cards, there are a lot of moving parts to keep track of.

I've been experimenting with as many different set-ups and options as I can, trying to find the best ways to deal jet-pack murder on your foes. I have a few tips and tricks to share that I can guarantee will make you a better, stompier, player.

Many of these kit and Titan builds require you to unlock some equipment first. If you're just starting fresh, Chris Carter wrote up a great list of general tips from the beta. Follow his advice, and you'll live a lot longer as a Pilot, kick extra ass as a Titan, and unlock the toys I'm going to talk about much faster.

Square Enix confirms Drakengard 3 Collector's Edition in Europe

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 10:30 AM PDT

Drakengard 3 is on the way in the west, and Square Enix has responded to fan feedback from Europe with an announcement of a Collector's Edition. This pack will include a clamshell box, hardback novella, DLC (including Japanese voices), a music "sampler CD" (but not a full soundtrack -- bummer), a poster, and of course -- the game -- which isn't a given these days!

It's priced at €69.99 and will be limited to 2,000 units. I tend to buy a fair amount of games from Square Enix, but I have never actually ordered it from their official store. I wonder how popular it is.

Tales of the World: Reve Unitia announced for 3DS

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Are you a Tales fan? Well you're in luck, as a strategy-centric 3DS iteration has been announced, titled Tales of the World: Reve Unitia. The only real details we have so far is that it will include a number of popular characters from the franchise, including fan favorite Lloyd Irving of Tales of Symphonia fame.

It isn't clear whether or not this is a direct port of the iOS and Android game Tales of the World: Tactics Union, but it will feature the same world and characters -- so it's entirely possible.

Meet Cortana, Windows 8.1 Phone's personal assistant

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 09:45 AM PDT

Today's Build Developer Conference saw Microsoft showing off Windows Phone 8.1, complete with its own personal assistant, the aptly-named Cortana. It's official! Signs of rampancy are likely still dormant, so at least that's one less thing to worry about if you're a Windows Phone user. Probably.

Cortana is powered by Bing, and features a homogenous mixture of Google Now and Siri traits, like a personality and the ability to create alarms, search for restaurants or nearby landmarks, and more. Cortana will launch as a beta, and will also offer "her" own set of useful tricks that might put her one step ahead of the competition, such as a "notebook" where she stores information about you and contacts, searches, and other actions you take when Cortana is in use. Don't worry, though. Your super weird searches should be safe, since you can change her settings to exclude certain people and other items if you want to be secretive.

Windows Phone 8.1 will come sporting some other upgrades to the OS, but Cortana is by far the most notable. I'm waiting for the day I can have SHODAN telling me she found some local events I might be interested in, like a massacre aboard the Von Braun. We're advanced enough as a civilization for this to happen now, right?

Frog Fractions 2 devs' Kickstarter Sim captures the thrills of crowdfunding

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 09:30 AM PDT

Crowdsourcing funding for your game has been all the rage the past couple of years. We know full well how everything comes off from the audience's side, but what do the developers go through?

Twinbeard, the makers of Frog Fractions 2, made a short game that aims to capture the developers' experience. Kickstarter Simulator 2015 chronicles all the bad decisions they need to duck, all the distractions they need to avoid, and all the life's-savings they need to drain from peoples' bank accounts.

But, it's not all stressful shot-calling. Apparently, you get to chill on the couch with some cute cats, and that makes everything totally worth it.

Clint Hocking, Kim Swift join Amazon Game Studios

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 09:15 AM PDT

Amazon's acquisition of Killer Instinct developer Double Helix Games was unexpected and the company has only just begun making moves if a recent pair of hires is any indication.

Kotaku is reporting that Portal designer Kim Swift and Far Cry 2 designer Clint Hocking have both joined up with Amazon Game Studios, presumably -- but not necessarily -- to work on games targeting the Kindle Fire and newly-unveiled Amazon Fire TV.

When this company gets into a new space, it really gets into it. I'm curious to see what kind of impact Amazon will have on gaming and if it's got more to share beyond the Fire TV.

Renegade Kid wants to channel classic survival horror with Cult County

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Developer Renegade Kid, responsible for the DS survival horror adventure Dementium: The Ward and sci-fi shooter Moon, has taken to Kickstarter with a brand new project. It's called Cult County, and it aims to blend specific elements from successful series like The Walking Dead and Silent Hill to create a new breed of first-person survival horror. Color me intrigued.

Cult County follows one Gavin Mellick, a poor individual with a terminally ill mother who's making a six-hour trek across Texas to break the bad news to his sister Alissa. Once Gavin reaches his hometown, Alissa's nowhere to be found, likely having fallen off into a bottomless pit formed at the end of a road, Silent Hill-style. With the dust storm that's rolled in, who knows? Anything is possible.

During his search for Alissa, Gavin catches wind of a certain cult-like group who have conveniently settled into town, and I've seen enough horror movies to know when a cult's squatting in your hood, you're gonna have a bad time. Gavin starts seeing these strange creatures popping up here and there, so obviously he's going to have to take arms against them (probably a lead pipe) and show them what's what. The Kickstarter page does a great job of making the game sound palatable, but a bit clichéd, following familiar tropes culled from several different games.

Play The Wolf Among Us: A Crooked Mile next week

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 08:45 AM PDT

It strikes me as odd that Telltale wouldn't have the release dates for The Wolf Among Us: A Crooked Mile locked down in time for its launch trailer, but here we are, just a day later.

Episode 3 of the Fables series will launch first on Tuesday, April 8 for PC, Mac, and PlayStation 3 (North America). Then it's hitting Xbox 360 and PS3 (Europe) on April 8, with an iOS release happening sometime next week as well. Glad to see it's nearly upon us, as I'm sure you are too.

I wasn't going to say anything, but that Bigby has some serious shoulders. Damn, dude!

Live Show: Let's mess with Phil while playing Dark Souls 2

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 08:30 AM PDT

While I was growing up my mother always taught me that revenge was a dish best served cold. Well Mom, today the dish is being served lukewarm. If you checked out our previous Dark Souls 2 stream you'll remember that Phil insisted in trying to mess with me while I played the already difficult game. This culminated in my threat to wear Phil's teacup poodle Hank as a hat. I'm not proud of that.

Now the shoe is on the other foot. That's right, I get to mess with Phil in any and every way that you all want. Hell yes! And if that's not enough craziness for you, we're ending the show with some Goat Simulator. So buckle up kiddos, things are about to go nuts just at 2PM PDT over on Dtoid.tv! Make sure you're there for all of the insanity!

Online stores list The Walking Dead for Xbox One

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 08:15 AM PDT

Telltale's widely acclaimed series based on The Walking Dead may soon arrive on Xbox One. NeoGAF poster MauroNL spotted listings for the Game of the Year edition of the first season and the second season on the websites of several online retailers in the Netherlands.

Much about the listings suggests that they're placeholders. The description of the games appears to have been directly pasted from a retailer sales sheet and there are no accompanying images. All the same, I doubt it would surprise anyone to learn that the most successful franchise from a publisher with a history of putting their content on every available platform would wind up on Xbox One eventually. But if you were holding out to play on Xbox One for some reason, maybe here's a little light at the end of that dark tunnel.

South Park: The Stick of Truth gets its first DLC pack

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 08:00 AM PDT

South Park: The Stick of Truth turned out to be absolutely worth the wait multiple times over, and now you can grab some costume DLC for it. First up is the Super Samurai Spaceman pack for $1.99, which offers up the three costumes listed in the pack itself.

Next is the Super Ultimate Pack for $3.99, which comes with seven "exclusive" costumes with special abilities, like increased fire damage for the Necromancer suit. Finally, you can grab the Ultimate Fellowship pack for $2.99 (the pre-order bonus), which comes with four costumes.

More DLC is coming apparently, and it will be "first on Xbox 360" -- as many add-ons tend to do these days.

Monument Valley looks a bit like Fez x Echochrome

That soothing music was nice before I go drive to the middle of nowhere to do my taxes. I don't have anything that will play Monument Valley (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), which is out now, but if I did, I would. Thankfully an Android release is coming soon.

I love the minimalist, colorful, MC Escher inspired architecture. And the upright bird people that look like plague doctors. So cute.

If you have an iWhatever, maybe drop four bucks on this neat little game.

These are the games Amazon is developing

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 07:30 AM PDT

The Amazon Fire TV went on sale today and for a lot of us, it's a case of too little, too late. We already own one if not multiple devices that can stream all of the weird things we enjoy watching in the privacy of our homes. For me, games will be the deciding factor.

Accompanying this morning's announcement is a video showcasing what Amazon Game Studios has been up to lately. Some of these titles look decent. Others, not so much.

Origami animals? Yes. Dinosaurs with guns attached to their backs? Double yes. But there'll need to be plenty more where those two came from, that's for sure.

Saints Row IV thinks highly of itself, releasing Game of the Century Edition

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 07:15 AM PDT

Ever since the third installment in the series, Saints Row has been a franchise that hasn't been afraid to toot its own horn. Not necessarily without cause, though -- after all, Saints Row IV was pretty darn good. But don't take our word for it; by the looks of it, Deep Silver's prepared to release a new version of the game that tells you exactly how good it is.

Spotted on Amazon's German website, the Saints Row IV: Game of the Century Edition has been outed. Judging by the listing, it's set for a May 9 release for €30 (approximately $40). The game will contain the original's content, as well as everything included in the season pass and all other DLC that was released.

But, Deep Silver's not stopping there. Also listed on Amazon's French site is a Dead Island two-pack that comes packaged with the Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition and the Dead Island Riptide Complete Edition. That one's set for April 24, and is also priced right now at €30.

Soul Sacrifice Delta may be coming to the west

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Soul Sacrifice Delta, an expansion/semi-sequel of sorts for the original PlayStation Vita game Soul Sacrifice, is apparently coming to the west, according to a listing from a Spanish retailer. According to the listing the follow-up is set to launch on May 19th.

Delta just came out in Japan recently, and it evidently did very well over there, so this makes perfect sense if the listing is correct.

Age of Mythology: Extended Edition hits Steam in May

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 06:45 AM PDT

Today was a good day. Following an all-too-brief teaser for Age of Mythology: Extended Edition, more details have come out including launch timing and new features. This re-release of the beloved real-time strategy title will package the original game with its expansion The Titans and extra campaign The Golden Gift when it releases on Steam in early May. Here's what to expect:

  • Improved visuals: time of day, improved water, shadows, bump / specular maps, global lighting, anti-aliasing, and ambient occlusion.
  • Steamworks: mods via Steam Workshop, multiplayer, achievements, trading cards, leagues / badges / events, and cloud saves.
  • Extended features: Twitch streaming integration, treaty mode, and enhanced observer mode.

Now, much of this might be nostalgia talking -- it's been far too long -- but I'm genuinely pumped to replay Age of Mythology. I adore the subject matter and it remains one of my genre favorites.

Rockstar will add heists to GTA Online this spring

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 06:30 AM PDT

Rockstar has detailed what it has in store for GTA Online and while there's quite a lot of content planned, my eyes went straight for the line about the long-awaited Heist Missions. They're coming at some point this spring -- that's all the company was willing to say. Drat!

Next week, players will be able to create their own Capture Jobs if they're tired of making and playing Deathmatches and Races. There's also the High Life Update in the works -- it will allow players to own a second property with another garage, introduce the Mental State player statistic so we know how crazy our peers are, and add stuff like the Ballpup Rifle, the Dinka Thrust motorcycle, more cars, and additional high-end apartments.

Beyond this, Rockstar says holiday-themed content is scheduled for GTA Online as well and it'll be rolling out Story Mode DLC eventually. There's also a preview of upcoming changes to the game that will be delivered by way of title updates and dynamic tuning, viewable below.

Amazon now displays Metacritic scores for some reason

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 06:15 AM PDT

Remember when Fallout: New Vegas developers missed out on a Metacritic hinged upon bonus by one point? Well, here's another way Metacritic could doom (or help) developers. Retail giant Amazon has embedded Metacritic scores (and user scores) on games' pages, presumably because it doesn't trust its own terrible user reviews. The latter still get top billing but don't pop out as much as these newly present, colorful boxed numbers.

It's not on every product listing yet. Darksiders II ironically does not have one. Nor does Final Fantasy XIII-2. But games as old as Bushido Blade do. Currently, this is only for games, though Metacritic also aggregates scores for film and music.

Remember, average starts at 5.

We know that the Disney Magical World 3DS XL is heading to Walmart exclusively on April 11th, but now we have some more details on the package. The XL will retail for $199.96 exclusively at the big box retailer, and it also won't include a copy of the game.

As usual, it'll include a 4GB SD card, which you should probably switch out for a larger model on the cheap. So yeah, yet another 3DS XL. I say bring them on -- choice is good!

SRPG Natural Doctrine coming to North America, Europe

The PS4, PS3, and Vita strategy RPG from Patapon director Atsushi Ii is coming courtesy of NIS America sometime this fall to both North America and Europe with both Japanese and English audio. No Atlus-ian waits for you, Europe.

It's cross-play for multiplayer and cross-save betwixt its consoles, but no word yet on whether or not it's cross-buy. My fear is no, but we'll see.

I booted up the iFruit app for a grand total of 10 minutes at the launch of GTA V, and customized my license plate. It didn't work for a few days until Rockstar patched a fix. That was basically my experience with it.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor set for release on October 7

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 05:00 AM PDT

It's been awhile since we last heard from Monolith's new action-adventure title set in Tolkien's fantasy universe. Now, WB Games has revealed the release date, and fans will get to experience Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor later this year on October 7. And with most upcoming releases, we got to see some pre-order bonuses as well.

We also got a brand new trailer giving a little more back story on Talion's motive for revenge, and what exactly brought him back to life. The story was written by Christian Cantamessa, who also penned the story for Red Dead Redemption, and the folks at Monolith were keen to make the narrative a big focus of Middle-earth.

October is going to be a pretty busy month for movie/comic game. With Alien: Isolation set for release on the same day as Middle-earth, and the new Batman: Arkham title the week after, people are going to have to make some tough decisions on which game they'll spend their time with. But regardless, it'll be an exciting month for fans no doubt.

Amazon announces its $99 set-top box Fire TV

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 04:30 AM PDT

Amazon has finally announced its long-rumored media device and it's available for purchase as of today. The $99 Amazon Fire TV supports expected streaming services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Prime Instant Video, and Pandora, but games also have a presence on the box which sports an Adreno 320 GPU, 2GB of memory, and a quad-core processor.

There a over a hundred games supported including Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Asphalt 8, and Amazon Game Studios' exclusive third-person shooter Sev Zero, with "thousands more coming soon." According to Amazon, many of these games are free and "the average price of paid games is just $1.85." Of course, that less-than-ideal gamepad is being sold separately for $39.99.

There are a few interesting gimmicks, but the one that sounds most intriguing to me is ASAP (Advanced Streaming and Prediction), a feature which predicts movies or television episodes you'll want to watch and prepares them for playback ahead of time to avoid buffering. I'm not really in the market for the Fire TV as a Roku owner -- and Amazon has a long way to go before it can pull me in with its gaming initiative -- but this looks like a nice little box. Maybe someday.

The Wonderful 101 gets a digital price drop on the Wii U

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 04:00 AM PDT

If you haven't played The Wonderful 101 yet, now is a perfect time as the game has dropped in price to $30 on the Wii U eShop. You'll also be able to pick up Game & Wario and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge for the same price -- digitally of course.

$30 may be too rich for a lot of people to bite on Wario, but I heartily enjoyed it for what it was -- especially if you play it with a group of people. Ninja Gaiden 3 on the other hand is probably only worth half of that pricedrop entry fee, even with all the Wii U fixins.

Composer Nobuo Uematsu joins Defender's Quest II

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 03:00 AM PDT

There's really nothing more that needs to be said about Defender's Quest II: Mist of Ruin for me to be interested in it -- that's how much I liked the last game, which remains one of my favorite tower-defense titles. Today's news, then, is total icing on top: renowned Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu has joined the project! What a pleasant surprise.

He will be collaborating with the composer of the original game, Keven Penkin, for the Defender's Quest II soundtrack. From what I've heard about the sequel, its story will be a terrific fit for Uematsu's music. I'm expected everyone working on the game -- including animator Dean Dodrill, of Dust: An Elysian Tail -- to absolutely nail it. They haven't let me down yet.

Daylight sees a slight delay, now coming April 29

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 02:00 AM PDT

Daylight has been delayed slightly, and will now be coming out on April 29 instead of on April 8. Why the delay? So Atlus and developers Zombie Studios can fine tune the scariness. Atlus released this statement on the exact reasons they had to push things back a little.

"Here's the thing: the way Daylight is developed is completely different because of its procedural generation. In a lot of ways it really helped the team by streamlining the environment creation, but it's taken extra time to make sure all the scare cues are properly implemented for maximum player effect."

For those of you interested in picking this one up, you can pre-order the PC version and get it for $9.99. PS Plus subscribers can also get it for that price too on the PlayStation 4, and non-subscribers can pick it up for $11.99 otherwise. Daylight will then run for $14.99 once the promotional period ends.

Waste some time today with this Zelda demake

For the upcoming Ludum Dare Game Jam, developer benpurdy produced a demake for the original Legend of Zelda titled "Zelda in 16x16 pixels." This is more or less the entire game here, with all eight pieces of the Triforce in tow.

You'll use the arrow keys to move, and after you enter the cave you'll grab your sword, which can be used with the "A" key. Bombs can also be aquired and used with "S." All in all it's a pretty comprehensive demake, and if you're a hardcore fan of the NES game it's worth testing out!

ESRB says Persona 4 coming to the PlayStation 3

Oh no naughty naughty ESRB! You've let slip up another release before the publisher was ready to say something about it.

In this case it's for Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, heading to the PlayStation 3. Best guess it's a PS2 classic deal here. Best case it's Persona 4 Golden that's going to get ported over to the PS3 from the Vita.

We've reached out to Atlus asking what's up and we'll let you know if we hear anything about it. Otherwise here's the ESRB listing:

Throw your own eyeballs around in Hellraid: The Escape

Posted: 01 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Hellraid is an upcoming first-person co-op slasher in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Hellraid: The Escape, on the other hand, is a mobile survival title along the same lines as The Room.

This one is being developed by Shortbreak Studios in close cooperation with Techland, and sees players needing to escape from a demonic dimension. It's mostly a puzzle game, and while there are enemies you have to fight, you'll be taking them on with your "not weapons." So I guess like traps?

Hellraid: The Escape will be out on the App Store on May 15 for $2.99/€2,49. The press release also mentions free updates, no in-app purchases, or pay-to-win elements. I find it funny that has to be a bullet point with mobile titles now. Funny in the sad way.
