It took one hour to remake Flappy Bird

Posted: 09 Feb 2014 01:00 PM PST

Depending on who you ask, Flappy Bird is either a sign of everything that's wrong with the phone gaming, a strangely compelling piece of junk, the ultimate game development Cinderella story, or some combination of the three. Now that's all a memory. The iOS hit was taken down by creator Dong Nguyen a few hours ago, presumably forever.

Thankfully, Joe Shanahan has remade the game.  It took him about an hour, using free game development tools Blender and Python. No word on if he'll be releasing the game on iOS. I suppose that depends on how interested he is in becoming ridiculously rich. Better change the name though, maybe "Candy Bird" or "Angry Saga".

Seriously. That would be one heck of a profit deal, regardless of potential lawsuits.

Joylancer demo is up, brings back 'JOY AND FEELINGS'

Posted: 09 Feb 2014 11:00 AM PST

Though the game is still in development, Joylancer is shaping up to be a product worthy of sitting alongside Drill Dozer, Shovel Knight, and all of the other "your weapon is your means of transport" 2D action platformers that have brightened our lives over the years. How you play the game has a huge effect on how exciting of a time you have. For the most part, you can get by with just poking enemies and jumping around, but the real fun comes from challenging yourself to use all of your advanced mobility and powered up techniques to blaze through a stage in record time.

Speaking of record time, you've also got a limited time to pre-order the game on the cheap. There are various tiers and content packages available now (including a free Shareware version), but after February 25, Joylancer developer T.J. Thomas will be changing up the pricing, presumably in a way that will leave early adopters feeling rewarded. Jason Rohrer tried something similar with The Castle Doctrine, which caused quite a stir. It's also interesting to see the game up on Itch, one of the newer online storefronts for games. The site allows you to donate as much or as little to the developer as you want, sort of like a Humble Bundle sold one game at a time. Seems like an idea that's time has come, not unlike the previously referenced motorcycle drill-lance shoryuken,.

Early Access Review: Overgrowth

Posted: 09 Feb 2014 10:00 AM PST

[Want to know how an Early Access game is coming along? Check out our Early Access Reviews, which will be a series going forward with the intent of informing you whether or not a game is worth buying into at this time.]

I’ve always held Lugaru as one of the finest indie games out there, largely due to its combat system and difficulty curve. Beating things up in Lugaru is incredibly satisfying, so naturally I’m excited for its sequel, Overgrowth. After being in development for approximately ever, Overgrowth is now on Steam Early Access in a still-pretty-early state, but that doesn't mean that it isn't worth getting in on early.

Even in its current state, Overgrowth has proven to be one of the most intense fighting games I've ever played.

Stick of Truth Achievements have you 'join the KKK'

Posted: 09 Feb 2014 09:00 AM PST

The Achievement / Trophies list for South Park: The Stick of Truth have just been uncovered, and it looks like "New Kid on the Block", what seems to be the very first one you'll earn, is for joining the KKK. Well then, we're just going to jump right into the deep end in true South Park style, even though it probably stands for something like "Kool Kids' Klub."

The rest of the list is notable too, as it's littered with South Park references. My favorite is "Canadian Handshake", which is unlocked by farting on 100 people. Truth be told, this game looks as if it'll be a continuous exercise in defecation and flatulence.

For those concerned about spoilers, the set is fairly safe to look at, as the progression-based ones are locked away as secrets. Also, it seems that completionists will get their money's worth since some conflicting Achievements indicate that it'll require two separate playthroughs. Oh well, more South Park probably won't necessarily be a bad thing.

Arkham Origins progression blocking bugs won't be fixed

Posted: 09 Feb 2014 05:00 AM PST

In a recent post on the Batman: Arkham Origins support forms, it has been stated that there are no current plans to fix any more of the numerous progression blocking bugs that have yet to be addressed. Instead, all efforts by the game's development team are centered on finishing the upcoming story DLC that current season pass holders have been waiting for.

"The team is currently working hard on the upcoming story DLC and there currently are no plans for releasing another patch to address the issues that have been reported on the forums," wrote Arkham community manager Mercury.

"If we do move forward with creating a new patch, it will try to address the progression blocking bugs for players, not the minor glitches that do not prevent one from continuing to play. The issues that are not progression blockers will unfortunately no longer be addressed," they continued.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused for some of you, and want to thank you for having been patient."

Previously, Wii U owners had their season passes refunded to them due to the cancellation of all upcoming DLC for the platform. I'm not sure what's going on over at Warner Bros. Games Montreal, but it seems like the focus has turned to getting any promised DLC out the door to make a quick buck and moving on from the game as soon as possible.. which is a real shame.

Artists Wanted: THE FUTURE!

Posted: 09 Feb 2014 04:00 AM PST

[This month's Dtoid Community Assignment will span three topics: the past, the present, and the future of gaming. Sound off on one, two, or all three!]

When I think about "the future" in relation to videogames, my imagination runs wild. I fantasize about playing games in a Holodeck, or using an Oculus Rift while street surfing on my real-life Hoverboard. I think back to the visions of the future set forth in some of my favorite games, and how wildly they vary based on the universe. (Will it be more Syndicate or Fallout? Blood Dragon or Blade Runner?)

For this month's Artists Wanted, I want you to create something inspired by the future as it relates to gaming. To participate, start a community blog and title it "The Future: [Your title here]", then just post your art and a bit about the process that went into making it. Interpret this assignment however you want -- don't feel restricted by the ideas presented above! Throughout the month of February, Dtoid's new Cblog Manager and I will be keeping an eye on the Community Blogs and promoting your artistic creations to the front page, so take your time and really perfect your piece.

Have fun! I can't wait to see what you folks come up with.

The Legend of Zelda's Moblins have an identity crisis

Posted: 09 Feb 2014 03:00 AM PST

Bulldogs or pigs? Why can't The Legend of Zelda's Moblins make up their minds on just who they want to be?

Actually, it's quite interesting to see how these absent minded minions of Gannon have continuously bounced back and forth in designs over the years, thanks to another interesting "Know Your Enemy" video from the folks over at GameXplain.

Is it just me, or do I now know way more than I ever wanted to about this classic enemy?

BioShock themed goodies come to Team Fortress 2

Posted: 09 Feb 2014 02:00 AM PST

Who doesn't love a shiny new hat, or two, to wear during their Team Fortress 2 shenanigans? Well if you've been looking to spruce up the old noggin with a little BioShock love, then Irrational Games has a treat for you... well that is if you are a BioShock Infinite: Season Pass holder on Steam.

Seen in the picture below, are two lovely BioShock themed facial decorations that give that oh-so creepy patriotic vibe that runs rampant throughout Irrational Games' latest. In addition to these facehuggers, Irrational is also introducing the Little Sister’s Big Daddy Pocket Doll, which can be assembled from found parts found across the arena.

If these new items fancy your interest, make sure to grab the Season Pass soon, as they are only included with purchase until March 24, 2014.

Sega's retail sales struggle, while digital market grows

Posted: 09 Feb 2014 01:00 AM PST

While Sega saw a continued decline in software sales this past fiscal year, its mobile division is continuing to grow, according to a recent report issued by Sega Sammy Holdings Inc.

Even with titles like Sonic Lost World and Football Manager 2014, only 6.3 million units of product were sold at retail worldwide for the Japanese developer. Europe was responsible for roughly half of all units, at 3 million, while North American contributed 2.2 million and Japan 900,000.

On the digital side of things, Sega continued to see success with its PC RPG Phantasy Star Online 2, as well as with a few of its mobile titles. Puyopuyo!! Quest and Chain Chronicle combined for 8 million downloads since December of 2013.

As a result of this, Sega has seen an increase in net sales of 19.7% and an operating income increase of 436.7%, over the previous year.
