Free-to-play Warface Xbox 360 beta now available Posted: 08 Feb 2014 08:00 AM PST Well, it's finally here; the Xbox 360 beta for Crytek's first-person shooter, Warface, which was announced back in August, has now launched. In order to participate in the free-to-play Warface beta, you'll need to register on the game's official site and, as we've all come to expect, have an Xbox Live Gold membership. Alternatively, you can just play Warface on PC, which officially launched last October following its own beta period.
AAA game business unprofitable says Just Cause dev Posted: 08 Feb 2014 07:00 AM PST Profitability in AAA titles nowadays is tricky business. We scoff when companies claim a game that sells 3.5 million copies is not a success, and perhaps rightfully so. Amidst the inflating development costs of the new consoles, finding the right balance -- between developer and publisher profitability -- may be "impossible," if we are to believe Avalanche Studios' founder and creative director Christofer Sundberg. "Games have evolved, technology has evolved but as businesses we’re still stuck where we were 15 years ago. As budgets grow, risks increase," he said in a recent interview with GameSpot. "Very few traditional $60 games make any money, and what used to make sense doesn't any more," he continued. "Publishers and developers very rarely see a return of investment from a 5-8 hour long game." Sundberg's studio's next game, Mad Max, is a AAA title that is being published by Warner Bros and is slated to hit both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. And from the sound of things he doesn't sound so sure the game will be a commercial success, given the install base of both consoles. "It’s a bit early for me to feel comfortable though," Sundberg said. "The investments in a AAA game these days are huge and even if everyone of those two million people bought a copy each, most big games would not break even if they were next-gen exclusives."
Flappy Bird creator says he's taking the game down Posted: 08 Feb 2014 06:50 AM PST Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen has announced via Twitter that he will be taking the game down some point on Sunday. He has stated that he "cannot take this anymore." In subsequent tweets, Nguyen explains that the taking down of Flappy Bird is "not anything related to legal issues" and that he still makes games. I guess making $50k a day in ad revenue is too much to handle, or perhaps Nguyen is settling down for an early retirement. Either way, looks like there is room for all other Flappy Bird clones.

My life's earnings are stashed away in my vault. Well, half of it. As an added security measure, I've given my wife half to hold on to and protect with her life. I've built my house in such a way that I feel pretty confident that my belongings are safe. At the very least, my wife and kids will be safe behind the protection of my pit bull, Tiny. I come back later in the day to find that a few vagabonds tried, and failed, to steal my money. Their loss, my gain. They died, I thrived. I come back the next day and find that my walls have been sawed through, and my money stolen. I check on Tiny: drugged. My family? All dead, no, murdered. I have nothing left. I check the security tapes, though I'm not really sure why. I don't care for revenge, though I can't say the thought is absent in my mind. Standing in what's left of my house, I take it all in and kill myself. |
10 new Rockstar Verified jobs added to GTA Online Posted: 08 Feb 2014 05:00 AM PST Rockstar has seen fit to verify yet another set of community-created jobs in GTA Online, giving them the official "Rockstar Verified" seal of approval -- a much sought after title among Creators -- and it is now available for all to partake in on Xbox Live and PSN. There's a nice mix of deathmatch and race-themed jobs this time around and includes a race called Long Haul 2, which Rockstar claims to be "the longest Rockstar Verified or Rockstar Created race in GTA Online." The full list of newly verified jobs, with links to each one, can be viewed below. Anyone given some of these a go yet?
The best stuff on Destructoid this week [2/8] Posted: 08 Feb 2014 04:00 AM PST [We post a lot of articles here at Destructoid. The endless, ouroboros news cycle has us burning the snake at both ends, which will ultimately push big news, thoughtful original pieces, and all sorts of other great content off of the front page. Check here every Saturday for my attempt to rectify that.] But a week has passed, yet it feels a lifetime since we've touched. How has the last seven days time treated you? I've had better. I've had worse. I got to write about Persona a lot (see below), which is nice. I didn't have working sinks for a few days, which was not nice. Brushing your teeth over the toilet is weird. There aren't twelve flippin' previews this week. In fact, there are none. We'll be making that up next week with some anticipated ones. Instead, we have a good deal of in-depth feature and editorial content for you to absorb with the unbearable lightness of your being. Here's last week's. Let's begin anew.
Destructoid: MS Paint edition: Round one: Game covers Posted: 08 Feb 2014 02:00 AM PST [Dtoid community blogger AboveUp posted a fun new MS Paint project for the community. You should join! --Mr Andy Dixon] Drawing is fun. Especially if you're not very good at it. Personally, I'm decent at drawing at best; the moment it becomes more involved than just scribbling something is the instant it becomes too much to handle for me. This doesn't mean I don't have any respect for people who know how big everything is supposed to be in relation to everything else, or that can actually draws hands. People who can do that are awesome! You know who else is awesome? Destructoid, because I asked them to draw their favorite game's box art in MS Paint, especially encouraging them if they have no skill!
Peter Molyneux questions the new Dungeon Keeper Posted: 08 Feb 2014 01:30 AM PST EA's recent mobile reincarnation of the classic Bullfrog Productions strategy game Dungeon Keeper, has undoubtedly received its fair share of criticism over the passing week. Our own Chris Carter called it "...a hollow freemium shell of what once was," in his review and it looks like the game's original designer, Peter Molyneux, is just as disappointed. "I felt myself turning round saying, 'What? This is ridiculous. I just want to make a dungeon," he said speaking with the BBC. "I don't want to schedule it on my alarm clock for six days to come back for a block to be chipped." Continuing on: "I don't think they got it quite right, the balance between keeping it familiar to the fans that were out there but fresh enough and understandable enough for this much bigger mobile audience." Personally, I'm not sure what to think of this mess EA has created. The fact that EA has found a way to pad their scores on the Android marketplace, has all but guaranteed I will not be downloading this free-to-play title anytime in the near future.
