| Two expansions planned for The Old Republic in 2014 Posted: 04 Feb 2014 02:00 PM PST Looking at the year ahead for Star Wars: The Old Republic, senior producer Bruce Maclean says there are two more digital expansions on the way -- "one similar to Galactic Starfighter in scope and one more closely resembling Rise of the Hutt Cartel." The team is moving to a three-week cycle between minor patches, up from two weeks, in order to budget more time for bug testing. Similarly, major content updates are shifting to a nine-week cycle. Besides those big-ticket items, The Old Republic will have a Double XP weekend from March 14 - 17, Update 2.7 with two additional Flashpoints and a new tier of gear on April 8, and Update 2.8 -- described as the "biggest update up to this point" -- with more ships and a new Ship Role for Galactic Starfighter on June 10. Speaking of the Starfighter expansion and its 12 vs. 12 spaceship battles, that is now playable for free. No need for preferred status or to be a subscriber any longer. | Carmack couldn't work on VR at id Software, so he left Posted: 04 Feb 2014 01:00 PM PST As much as I want John Carmack to do good work at Oculus VR, it was sad to see him depart from id Software. In an interview with USA Today, he elaborated on why he chose to leave instead of working at multiple companies simultaneously (because that's an option for him). "I would have been content probably staying there [at id] working with the people and technology that I know and the work we were doing," Carmack said. He had wanted parent company ZeniMax Media and Oculus VR to establish a deal in which games like Wolfenstein: The New Order and Doom 4 would be playable with the Oculus Rift headset. "When it became clear that I wasn't going to have the opportunity to do any work on VR while at id Software, I decided to not renew my contract," he explained. And that's how an era ended. id co-founder Carmack pushes reality with Oculus VR [USA Today] |
| Disney Infinity, Murdered: Soul Suspect, Kodoku & Bikinis Posted: 04 Feb 2014 12:30 PM PST Well, we got a new camera and I accidentally switched it onto "Sears Portrait Studio" mode, so sorry if I look a little bit like I'm in a porno from the late eighties. (What else is new.) Today, we've got some more details on Nintendo's post-Wii U plans, Murdered: Soul Suspect is coming to PS4 and Xbox One, Disney Infinity has Marvel and Star Wars plans, but they also just laid off a few hundred employees, which sucks. Kodoku looks SO cool, there's a new mech game called Matador with nice streetlights, and Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate gets ANOTHER sexy swimwear update. |
| Titanfall's minimum PC specs are totally doable Posted: 04 Feb 2014 12:00 PM PST Respawn Entertainment co-founder Vince Zampella has shared the minimum system requirements for Titanfall on PC and they're quite low, at least to my eyes:
It's really just the 64-bit requirement, then. But we've had years and years to get ready for that. It'll be much more interesting to see where the recommended specs end up for Titanfall -- I'm expecting those to fall toward the lower end as well. In a separate tweet, Zampella suggested that a Mac port was possible but it'd "have to be after launch" on March 11, 2014. |
| Rockstar founders will be inducted into AIAS Hall of Fame Posted: 04 Feb 2014 11:30 AM PST Dan and Sam Houser, founders of Rockstar Games, and GTA producer Leslie Benzies will be the latest inductions into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' (AIAS) Hall of Fame at the D.I.C.E. awards ceremony on Thursday. The trio will join previous incumbents Gabe Newell, Mark Cerny, and BioWare founders Dr. Greg Zeschuk and Dr. Ray Muzyka. The Houser brothers founded Rockstar back in 1998 and acquired original GTA developers DMA Design but the siblings' cinematic influence has always been credited with helping elevate the series to another level. Like them or not, the Housers and Rockstar have helped shape the industry in a big way. |
| Ubisoft did not abandon its Watch Dogs trademark Posted: 04 Feb 2014 11:00 AM PST This week, the Internet discovered that one of Ubisoft's trademarks for Watch Dogs -- specifically, the one concerned with game software -- had been abandoned. This led to plenty of speculation, ranging from a possible cancellation of the game to a name change signifying that it had become a part of the Assassin's Creed series. Wild, but highly entertaining. Anyway, no -- the truth of the matter is that Ubisoft did not file a request for "express abandonment" of the trademark. Rather, someone claiming to be Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot did and apparently that can in fact work. Huh. In a statement to VentureBeat, the company said it was "working directly with the [US Patent and Trademark Office] on reinstating the trademark for Watch Dogs, and it will be active again the in the coming days." More importantly, this situation has "no impact" on the game's development. Phew. Ubisoft says it is working to reinstate the 'Watch Dogs' trademark [VentureBeat] |
| Civilization aplenty in the Humble Sid Meier Bundle Posted: 04 Feb 2014 10:30 AM PST The latest Humble Bundle is one to avoid if you've got a bunch of responsibilities to take care of in the immediate future. Featuring the games of veteran designer Sid Meier, this package is broken into three tiers. First up, pay-what-you-want pricing covers the complete editions of Civilization III and IV, Ace Patrol, Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies, and Railroads! Paying above the average adds two more games -- Civilization V and its Gods and Kings expansion -- while paying more than $15 unlocks access to the game's Brave New World expansion. All of the featured titles are Steam compatible for PC and most of them (i.e., Civ IV and newer) are also playable on Mac. Seriously, though -- don't start playing Civ on a weekday. |
| Posted: 04 Feb 2014 10:00 AM PST [This month's Dtoid Community Assignment will span three topics: the past, the present, and the future of gaming. Sound off on one, two, or all three!] We all look back at gaming generations past through different lenses. For me, when I reflect on "the past", I think back to the times my brothers and I huddled around our family PC, absorbed in one of Lucasarts' stellar point-and-click adventures, or creating custom maps in Red Alert or Quake II, or discovering a new secret area in Doom. For you, "the past" might be summed up in that one game that you think everyone needs to play, or just a longing for "the simpler times" of days gone by. For this month's Bloggers Wanted assignment, I want you to reminisce on what comes to mind when you think of gaming's past. To participate, write a community blog, title it "The Past: [Your title here]", and mark it with the "Bloggers Wanted Essay Response" tag. No topic is off the table, so don't feel like you're restricted to the ideas presented above! Dtoid's new Cblog Manager and I will be keeping an eye on the Community Blogs throughout the month of February and promoting the very best ones to the front page, so please take some time and perfect your work. Have fun! I can't wait to see what you folks come up with. |

| BioShock Infinite's next Burial at Sea DLC will be longer Posted: 04 Feb 2014 09:15 AM PST One of the (perhaps less serious) criticisms levied at the first part of BioShock Infinite's Burial at Sea was that it was rather short at its hour or two run time. I'm not one to be upset with games for being too short, but if that was an issue for you, Ken Levine tweeted that doing everything in Burial at Sea: Part 2 -- a "completionist" estimation -- will run you five or six hours, which of course means the game is twice, possibly thrice as good as Part 1. That's how it works, right? |
| Square gives us a look at Lightning Returns' dev process Posted: 04 Feb 2014 09:00 AM PST Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is almost here, as the third and [final?] part of the XIII triology. To celebrate, Square Enix has released a new video that gives us a look at some of the people responsible for developing the game, as well as some general Lightning Returns footage. Most of it is in Japanese as it features the core developmental team, but a decent amount is narrated by Lightning herself, Ali Hillis. Dale and I have been playing quite a bit of Lighting Returns, so expect lots of thoughts as the game launches next week. |
| ReRoll is mapping the world with drones for you to play Posted: 04 Feb 2014 08:45 AM PST Yeah. Wait. What? ReROLL's ultimate aim is to map the entire world (that is, planet Earth) using autonomous drones in order to make an enormous videogame map. This will be done over long periods of time and in sections, of course. Apparently they can't even start on the United States until drone regulations are hammered out next year, so the first bit of game, "Brick 1" will not take place in the US. You need to eat, rest, and exercise to manage your character, whether you settle down or roam the world as a nomad. You can catch some interesting prototype footage in the video of someone driving a snow mobile searching for useful things in the environment. There's a whole bunch of explanations of this game's crazy plans over at its website, including funding plans, alpha and beta plans, and more. Quite the wild project this is. |
| Finally, your dreams of playing as a goat have come true Posted: 04 Feb 2014 08:30 AM PST One time in college, my friends and I were throwing a luau in our backyard, when our landlord showed up unannounced and got all sorts of interested in what we were doing. He casually mentioned that we could roast some of his goats if we wanted, as if that's a thing people do. He got these goats to take care of his leafy spurge problem, but they only wanted to play all day. After watching this Goat Simulator video, I can confidently corroborate his story. Goats just want to spend all day climbing towers and knocking basketballs off of barrels. Still, as mischievous as they are, I'm not eating them anytime soon. |
| Posted: 04 Feb 2014 08:00 AM PST It's difficult to have a unique idea in a genre that's as over-saturated as 'first-person shooter' is. With Call of Duty, Halo, and Battlefield already out there year after year, making a multiplayer game enticing while offering something fresh and unseen is becoming harder and harder for developers to accomplish. The makers of Rekoil: Liberator are proof of that. |

| Microsoft's new CEO is Satya Nadella Posted: 04 Feb 2014 07:45 AM PST Microsoft has named its new chief executive officer following Steve Ballmer, who announced his intent to retire once a replacement was found back in August. He's now out and Satya Nadella, the former executive VP of Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise group, has taken his place as CEO. "Having worked with him for more than 20 years, I know that Satya is the right leader at the right time for Microsoft," said Ballmer. Additionally, founder and chairman of the board of directors Bill Gates has taken on a new role as technology advisor to better "[support] Nadella in shaping technology and product direction." As a result, John Thompson will become the new chairman. "Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together," said Gates. "His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth." Also, he's got some sick glasses. Microsoft Board names Satya Nadella as CEO [Microsoft] |
| The Pokemon Bank App is now live in Europe and Australia Posted: 04 Feb 2014 07:30 AM PST After over a month of waiting, the X & Y Pokemon Bank App is now live in Europe and Australia. The App was previously delayed due to Nintendo's increased network traffic during Christmas, and there's never really been a clear release window for most regions, until now. Upon downloading it, you'll get 100 extra boxes to store Pokemon online with, as well as the ability to transfer Pokemon from Black and White or Black and White 2. It comes with a free 30 day trial (if you download it before March 14th), and if you use it before September 30th, you'll get a free Celebi gift. There's still no word on the North American release. | Persona Q 'like playing two whole RPGs altogether' Posted: 04 Feb 2014 07:20 AM PST It's a good day when I can just sit and write several articles about Persona. The last bit of the lengthy interview with Katsura Hashino, following talk on Persona 5, Persona 4: Dancing All Night, and Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold, centered on the chibi P3/P4 mash up Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. After starting on collaborative works Dancing All Night and Persona 4 Arena with outside developers, the team thought "doing one within the company itself would be neat in a sort of oblique way," Hashino explains. "We'd like to hope that by bringing Persona and Etrian Odyssey together, the ensuing chemistry between the two series will result in something that fans find to be really immersive." A fitting union to celebrate Atlus' 25th anniversary. Hashino also said that, "if you play both the Persona 3 and Persona 4 characters' respective stories to completion, it'll be like playing two whole RPGs altogether." Sounds hefty as heck. I'm sure Dale will be up for it. And here’s the complete and final version of the interview [Pepsiman Tumblr] |
| Persona 4: Dancing All Night & Persona 4 Arena's future Posted: 04 Feb 2014 07:15 AM PST The lengthy interview with Katsura Hashino wasn't just about Persona 5. The whole gamut of Atlus announcements were touched on, including the wonderfully named Persona 4: Dancing All Night. "[W]e'd actually been thinking about making a ryhthm game with Persona music for a while," Hashino explained, but they didn't have the expertise to do it. That's where the partnership with Dingo came in. "It's actually similar to how Persona 4 Arena was created. We wanted to bring Shigenori Soejima's character art to life by way of a fighting game and this time we thought it would be nice if Shoji Meguro's music had its turn in the spotlight." Hashino also said it was a gesture towards fans that purchased a Vita just for Persona 4: Golden, giving them more Persona 4 as a thanks for their support. "Life can be rough out there in the world these days...It's meant to be a light and sort of bubbly experience." Of course, that doesn't mean it will be without a story. And, speaking of Persona 4's spin off stories, Hashino explained that Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold is meant to "give that storyline some proper closure and tie everything up nicely," and that any continuation "would likely be as part of a new story altogether." And here’s the complete and final version of the interview [Pepsiman Tumblr] |
| Persona 5: Painting the town red & social responsibility Posted: 04 Feb 2014 07:00 AM PST "I feel that in today's world, there's no shortage of people that are bored and discontent with their lives," says Persona 5 director Katsura Hashino. "They're at a dead end, chained down to a world of which they resent being a part." Translator Pepsiman has translated a lengthy interview with Katsura Hashino about the upcoming Persona 5, which we still know little about. Every little morsel is like sipping on an élan vital cocktail. Or soma. Hashino emphasized how Persona 5 is about empowerment, explaining, "the characters in this game, through sheer force of will, are out to destroy that which suffocates people in today's society." While this sounds similar to past outings, this freedom is, "aside from what [Persona 3 and 4] discussed," not just about banding together with a group. He wants players to feel, "like they've found a renewed sense of self and an understanding that they can't be apathetic towards what's going on in society." People that play games seem aggressively apathetic to what's going on in society sometimes, so that's an interesting aim. Of course, Hashino noted, "I'm not interested in force feeding a message down players' throats," and Persona fans who want to ignore its themes will find a typically wonderful role-playing experience all the same. As blue was to P3 and yellow to P4, red is Persona 5's color, as the teaser image suggests. Red "can be a pretty hard color on the eyes," Hashino noted, which has required some extra effort in making the interface "palatable." I almost don't want to hear or see anything else; to be reminded that I probably won't be playing this game for a year plus. Tom Petty was right. The waiting is the hardest part. And here’s the complete and final version of the interview [Pepsiman Tumblr] |
| Stalk market: Nintendo completes share buyback Posted: 04 Feb 2014 06:30 AM PST Nintendo has completed its 114 billion-yen ($1.1 billion) share buyback. Nintendo CEO Saturo Iwata announced the company would be using its cash reserves and "stepping up share buybacks" last week. In reducing the number of shares on the market by buying back existing stock, it offers stability for shareholders who will continue to hold stock in the company by increasing the value of the shares left on the market. Businessweek also noted Hiroshi Yamauchi's heirs, who inherited almost 10 percent of company stock following his death last year, sold back some of their stake in the company. Given the high inheritance tax they have to pay, it's possible that they're covering that cost under the buyback terms. Nintendo does not know exactly how many shares the heirs sold back. Not that it matters. Unless they somehow bogarted the entire buyback, which would've sucked for other shareholders trying to cash out. | World of Tanks hits the Xbox 360 on February 12th Posted: 04 Feb 2014 06:00 AM PST Some time ago, free-to-play guru Wargaming spoke on Microsoft's stubborness of offering a true "free-to-play" platform. Wargaming wanted to offer World of Tanks truly free without forcing people to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold, but Microsoft basically was silent on the matter. Eventually, some of us assumed that Wargaming might be that final straw that broke Microsoft's back -- but nope, World of Tanks is coming to the Xbox 360 on February 12th, and we've been informed that you need a Gold subscription to play it. Non-Gold members will get a seven day trial to test the game out, but it's a shame Microsoft is stuck in its ways, when Sony is adapting with a hybrid "pay to play, but other services are free" model. The Xbox 360 Edition will feature new controls, matchmaking options, and microtransactions to support the game. |
| Murdered: Soul Suspect also takes its dumb fedora to PS4 Posted: 04 Feb 2014 05:30 AM PST Yesterday we learned Murdered: Soul Suspect would come out on Xbox One in addition to PC, 360, and PS3. This upset some of you who like fedoras. Unsurprisingly, this latest story trailer shows the game is also slated for PS4. It also gives us a release date -- June 2014. Not to throw more shade at the game, which I'm tentatively hopeful for, but the police contracting a psychic? Okay, ghost game. |
| Review: The Wolf Among Us: Smoke and Mirrors Posted: 04 Feb 2014 05:00 AM PST Bigby the Wolf has the weight of the world on his shoulders. He's just stumbled upon two murders, everyone is judging him based on his past, and all of it is starting to take its toll. In the second episode of Wolf Among Us, Telltale does an amazing job of unloading some of that burden off to the player. Whereas Faith showed us Bigby from afar, we've now become him in Smoke and Mirrors. This is going to be one wild ride that even Toad might not be able to handle. |
| Lococycle gets a permanent price reduction Posted: 04 Feb 2014 04:30 AM PST Twisted Pixel's Lococycle is a rather polarizing game. Chris seemed to enjoy it. I, on the other hand, did not. Judging by the treatment that Microsoft's giving it, the general public appears to be just as divided. Major Nelson wrote on his website today that Lococycle on Xbox One will receive a permanent price reduction of 50 percent - from $20 down to $10. This is after the game came out on November 21, 2013 -- about two and a half months ago. Yikes. It's possible that Microsoft is doing this to match the price of the Xbox 360 version which releases on February 14. However, you can't help but think that if it were selling well on Xbox One, there's no way anyone in their right mind would offer it up on discount. This Week's Xbox Live Store Deals [Major Nelson] |
| Very Quick Tips: Fable Anniversary Posted: 04 Feb 2014 04:00 AM PST Fable Anniversary is a relatively straight-forward game, especially if you've played the original, as it's nearly identical in terms of content. But there are a few things you can miss, so I've crafted a few helpful tips to help you along the way. Before you do anything though you're going to want to turn off the Guildmaster's "hints" in the options menu. Trust me.

| New Thief video teaches how to steal in style Posted: 04 Feb 2014 03:30 AM PST The title of this Thief video calls it a trailer, but I'd be hard-pressed to classify it as such. Not many trailers run six minutes, but whatever this is, it remains interesting the whole time. I guess badass thievery and murder have that charming allure. While teaching the art of the trade, this video runs down the different approaches you can take to get what you want. And you want everything that isn't already yours. If it doesn't have you thinking about past Thief games, it's certainly reminiscent of Dishonored. Just remember that the shadows are your greatest ally. |

| Chrono Trigger Symphony Volume 3 is out now Posted: 04 Feb 2014 02:30 AM PST Last year, Blake Robinson announced that he would be working on a three-part tribute to the legendary Square role-playing game, Chrono Trigger. Volume One of the Chrono Trigger Symphony released in August and Volume Two came out in September, but there was a much longer wait before the final installment, which just released a few days ago. Naturally, we have a few samples from the album on the Destructoid Soundcloud, which is conveniently embedded below. The full album can be downloaded from iTunes or Loudr. |
| Matador is the isometric mech game I didn't know I needed Posted: 04 Feb 2014 02:00 AM PST Ernest Hemingway was an aficionado of bull fighting, the "only place where you could see life and death, i. e., violent death now that the wars were over." He wrote of the matador as an artist in The Sun Also Rises, with as much reverence and even more mysticism than an American sportswriter might pen an article about Ichiro Suzuki, baseball's best and most transcendent player. Then Gundam got to it. Matador Gundam. Well, I'm sure we can have a better mecha'ppropriation than that. How about Matador, this isometric mech game? The synth laced trailer makes me want to watch Patlabor or Otomo's Short Peace segment. It's gritty in a good way. It feels scuffed, like 80's and 90's anime. Your goal, the website reads, is to clear the whole city in one night. Choose your armaments and you're on your own. "When you die, start over and try, try again." It sounds lovely. Look out for it on Greenlight one of these days, matadorks. |
| Pronunciation problems: Witch and the Hundred Knight Posted: 04 Feb 2014 01:00 AM PST Arlecchino is your name, dear narrator? You could pronounce it right. It's only the name of one of the most well-known stock characters in theater, where slapstick derives from. Arle-KEY-no. Oh, and you're introducing the Witch's apprentice, Lucchini? It's "Lucchini." Like "zucchini." There's even easy present day reference for that one. Come on. This is worse than the French calling zucchini "courgette" and a bunch of other countries adopting it. It's almost as bad as Carcetti in The Wire. I know, no one else cares. Well, this new Witch and the Hundred Knight trailer does tell us that the previously referenced dog girl is an inquisitor for the church. Bow wow. That must be ruff. See if you can spot her in the trailer. You might have to paws the video. Roll over the YouTube progress bar to find to paws button. Or just skip to 1:0ca9. Anyway, looks like you'll face poodles of mastiff competition against the litter of pugnacious enemies in this shiba i-new action-oriented title from NIS, which is dachset to come out March 25. |
| Composer Alexander Brandon's collab album, Just Fun Posted: 04 Feb 2014 12:00 AM PST Composer Alexander Brandon has is best known for his work on games like the first two Deus Ex games, Unreal, and the Jazz Jackrabbit games. For the last two years, he has been working on a collaboration album titled Just Fun, and it features songs with collaborators such as Jake "virt" Kaufman (Double Dragon Neon, Shovel Knight), Grant "Stemage" Henry (Metroid Metal), Jimmy "Big Giant Circles" Hinson (Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2), Andrew Aversa (Soul Calibur V) and Danny Baranowsky (Super Meat Boy!). Brandon has launched a Kickstarter campaign to gather funds to hire sound engineers to make Just Fun sound as good as possible, as well as produce a physical release of the album. It reached its goal in only 24 hours! But stretch goals are in place, including an additional remix album. If you want a taste of what Brandon is cooking, check out our exclusive preview, "Oath of the Matron," featuring work by Andrew and Jillian Aversa. |
