PS Plus adds Outlast and Metro: Last Light this week

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 03:00 PM PST

As of tomorrow, PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download two games for free and save on another. Those are Metro: Last Light (PS3), Outlast (PS4), and Dustforce (PS Vita -- $7.99), respectively. That last title is also part of a larger PS Vita-specific sale, by the way.

If you have the means to do so, I'd recommend getting all three. I loved the setting and atmosphere of Metro 2033 but not its gunplay, so Last Light turned out okay for me; Outlast was undoubtedly one of last year's best horror titles thanks in large part to its focus on survival, not combat; and Dustforce is a well-put-together platformer with a marvelous soundtrack.

Later this month, subscribers will also get Payday 2, Remember Me, Street Fighter X Tekken (PS Vita), and ModNation Racers: Road Trip.

Can you work out the Glitchspace?

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 02:00 PM PST

I really like the idea of glitches as a form of artistic exprestion, especially in videogames. Whether it's the opening of Fez or the memory glitches in Remember Me, there's something about our supposedly perfect digital universes breaking in intriguing ways that's really interesting to me. Scottish indie studio Space Budgie is putting glitches at the heart of its first-person puzzle game Glitchspace which is currently in paid alpha.

Players have to navigate a series of stark virtual-reality levels where the geometry can be manipulated in the same ways you would if you were a programmer. A simple platform has variables, like its scale, vector, and its collision, all of which can be altered by the player to proceed. All of this is done via an interface which drops controls onto a flat pane that can be linked together.

The game's still rough round the edges as you would expect and some more explanation of some of the terms would be welcome (especially for programming-averse fools like myself) but Glitchspace has the right mix of an eye-catching aesthetic and a unique gameplay hook to keep me interested in seeing a final product.

10000000 creator's new game is You Must Build a Boat

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 01:00 PM PST

At this point, so many match-three puzzle games exist that it is easy to see a new one and immediately write it off without a second thought. Fortunately, 10000000 did enough new stuff with the genre that it gathered a decent amount of buzz, eventually making its way from iOS to PC, Mac, Linux, and Android.

Developer Luca Redwood originally planned a free update for 10000000, but with nebulous goals for what the update would include, it kept growing and changing until it was clear that the project was more sequel than update, and it would deserve its own release. Thus, You Must Build a Boat was born. Redwood describes it as keeping the same frantic match-three gameplay as its predecessor, but with the addition of a multiple path adventure element between runs.

In order for fans hoping for the free update not to feel snubbed, You Must Build a Boat will be free for those who own 10000000. And for those who don't already own the original, it is conveniently on sale this week on Steam for a dollar or DRM-free on Humble for half a buck more.

Gunpoint developer shows off his space stealth sim

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 12:00 PM PST

Gunpoint was one of my favourite games from last year and I've been eagerly awaiting to see what designer Tom Francis comes up with next. The answer, as you can see in the video above, is Heat Signature. It's a game where you'll fly around space in a small, unarmed vessel and attempt to board larger ships without detection.

In a blog post, Tom has written about his plans for the game such as issuing a player with a randomly generated profession and a target ship. Once you board a ship, stealth will be the key as you've got to get to the helm of the ship, take out the captain, and disable the ship.

The video above is pre-alpha footage and it seems little more than a proof of concept right now but the ideas behind Heat Signature are totally up my alley. Random generation in a space game with stealth elements? Yes please!

Final Fantasy Tactics director talks new game

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 11:30 AM PST

Yasumi Matsuno (Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy XII) has a Kickstarter project in the works, Unsung Story. It's sitting about $150,000 away from its goal with a week and half left. Unfortunately, the Vita stretch goal (and addition of composer Hitoshi Sakimoto) seem out of reach.

With the campaign's latest update, Matsuno talks directly about the design elements that differentiate Unsung Story from Matsuno's past works. What's interesting is that character class seems dependent on weapon equips and that characters can simultaneously have a level in a particular class, making switching easy, though a character trained as a a healer and an attacker may not be a worthwhile monster tamer, being such a low level in the latter.

Matsuno also gets into the story and structure. True to the name, Unsung Story doesn't have a main character, but rather looks backwards in time at various characters remembered in a great war.

"Some fought bravely for half a century, while others gave their lives in the briefest of moments. The story of each of these heroes is what we’re calling an episode. By joining them in their battles that span the course of the war, players will see for themselves if these heroes are truly worthy of the glory history has accorded them. While there are five episodes, each revolving around a separate hero, planned for launch, while the game is live, we intend to continue expanding various game systems and bringing out additional episodes that showcase these systems."

Provided it gets funded, Unsung Story is still a good year and a half off, but I'm excited none the less. In the meantime, maybe it's time to try out Matsuno's most recent work, Crimson Shroud.

Marvel, Star Wars reportedly next for Disney Infinity

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 11:00 AM PST

The Wall Street Journal reports there are indeed plans for characters from the Marvel and Star Wars properties to be brought into Disney Infinity. That's the good news here. Take a moment to make the most of it and reflect on who you'd want to get the full figurine treatment.

Now, here's the bad news: the publication has also heard that layoffs -- potentially to the effect of several hundred -- are imminent at Disney Interactive. With Disney's quarterly financial results scheduled for Wednesday, odds are we'll find out more later this week.

Nintendo founding family 'desire to sell' company shares

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 10:30 AM PST

Part of Nintendo CEO Saturo Iwata's plan to turn Nintendo around included "stepping up share buybacks." According to Businessweek, Nintendo has specified it will "purchase as many as 9.5 million shares, or 7.4 percent of its outstanding stock, at 12,025 yen apiece from interested investors."

Apparently, those interested include the heirs to Hiroshi Yamauchi, who ran the company for 53 years and passed away last year. Yamauchi owned nearly 10 percent of company shares at the time of his death and his heirs, "desire to sell it," though a Nintendo spokesperson noted, "We are not in a position to know how much shares the Yamauchi family will sell," which is important when considering they own 10 percent and Nintendo is buying back 7.4 percent.

The $1.1 billion buyback presumably comes out of Nintendo's heavy cash reserve ($8.6 billion as of last September) that has buoyed the company amidst poor Wii U sales. In reducing the number of shares on the market by buying back existing stock, it offers stability for shareholders who will continue to hold stock in the company by increasing the value of the shares left on the market.

Maybe the next Nintendo console will have a shares button.

Live show: World of Tanks Xbox 360 Beta

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 09:30 AM PST

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Let me start by saying that while I've always wanted to get into World of Tanks, I could never find the time to dig in and really play. Well, a few months ago, I decided I was ready to take the plunge after putting it off for so long. However, that was when I also discovered that the game was coming out on the Xbox 360 eventually, and decided to wait, as to start out fresh on the console version. So, to say that I'm excited to finally jump in, and blow some tanks to smithereens tonight on Mash Tactics, would be an insanely large understatement.

Join in on the action with us this evening as we sit down with some of our good friends from Wargaming.net, give away an insane amount of beta codes, and most importantly, make some sh!t explode. As well, if you've played a lot of World of Tanks before, feel free to log into chat, and give me some tips. Lord knows I'll need them. We may also have some other surprises in store, and goodies to give away, so be sure to get on over to Dtoid.TV nice and early for a chance to walk away with some sweet Wargaming swag!

Steam Music beta 'coming soon' to Big Picture, SteamOS

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 09:00 AM PST

Steam's in-client support of music playback isn't a feature I'm dying to have, but it is one I will use on a near-daily basis. I'm ready for it. Valve says the beta release of Steam Music is coming soon -- first on Steam Big Picture and SteamOS, followed by support for regular ol' Steam.

As per usual, you can express interest in taking part by signing up for a community group. Valve is initiating this beta "with what we believe to be the most fundamental set of features to offer a great music listening experience within Steam," so there'll be plenty of room for feedback.

Spotify support. That's it for me.

Grand Theft Auto V ships 32.5 million units

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 08:30 AM PST

How large of a city could someone construct out of all of the copies of Grand Theft Auto V in existence? These are the things I think about while looking at earnings reports. Take-Two reported its fiscal third quarter 2014 results today and the standout line here has got to be GTA V shipping 32.5 million units to date. We knew this was a best seller but good heavens that's a lot.

For this fiscal quarter ended December 31, 2013, GAAP net revenue rose to $1.86 billion. The publisher's non-GAAP net revenue from digitally-delivered content was also strong at $132.8 million, a growth of 42 percent year-over-year. Thanks, GTA Online.

"As a result of our third quarter performance, we have once again raised our revenue and earnings outlook for fiscal 2014, which is poised to be a record year for Take-Two," said CEO Strauss Zelnick in a press release. "Looking ahead, we firmly expect to deliver Non-GAAP earnings in fiscal 2015 and every year for the foreseeable future."

Murdered: Soul Suspect takes its dumb fedora to Xbox One

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 08:00 AM PST

Fedora. Lame vest and tie combo. Watch -- or worse, wallet -- chain. Man, the protagonist of Murdered: Soul Suspect looks dumb. Certainly has nothing on the style of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective's lead, though I soul suspect that to be intentional given how similar the two games' central conceit is. Still, nice to know that Microsoft will be populating its ghost town -- the Xbox One -- with this ghost story.

Murdered is coming to PS3, Xbox 360, and PC this spring. No word on when it's coming to Xbox One, or if a PS4 release is also incoming, as this developer diary came out of Xbox Canada. It's got some hilariously serious, deadpan explanations of the game's otherworldly conceit, though. For example:

"You ask him to find ways to investigate crime scenes in completely new and original ways, ways that only he as a ghost is capable of," and "It was interesting when we started developing this game and started asking ourselves what does it really mean to be a ghost, what is the fantasy of being a ghost, what is it you want to do as ghost?" (Besides creep on naked people, I guess)

For as much snark as I'm throwing, I'm quite interested in Murdered (watch 25 minutes of it here). It's a new IP and another shot for games to not screw up proper detective mechanics. If it will let you fail, anyway. I still need to play that Blade Runner game. Also interesting to consider: just how few games have "murder" in the title.

Sexy horse traps in Deception IV's Rube Goldberg machine

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 07:30 AM PST

I was watching Mouse Hunt the other day expecting it to not hold up since seeing it in theaters in 1997. Remember when a children's film could start with a bleak funeral that ends with a body in a sewer and continue towards more death and failed marriages? Turns out, I still really like Mouse Hunt. Part of my giddiness for its slapstick stems from its delightful Rube Goldberg machines where one insignificant act sets in motion a series of increasingly grander happenings.

Deception IV: Blood Ties is coming to North America (PS3, Vita) on March 25. It's a little like Mouse Hunt, but with less Nathan Lane and more almost naked women. It's more extremely slapstick, too, with this twelve combo trap. A boulder is dropped on the woman, she is set on fire, she's thrust onto a horse and knocked off with a pendulum axe. Good, wholesome family fun.

You'll find more detailed gameplay footage here; the above video is all payoff.

PS4 firmware 1.60 adds support for Pulse headsets

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 07:00 AM PST

As of a system update going live late tonight, PlayStation 4 owners with an official Pulse or Pulse Elite Edition headset will now be able to use their device with the console. That took a while, didn't it?

With that support out of the way, Sony is now able to talk about a new device: the Gold Wireless Headset. Due early this month for $99, the 7.1 virtual surround sound set will be compatible with PS3, PS4, PC, and Mac, as well as PS Vita via 3.5mm audio cable.

The Gold Wireless is yet another headset to tout custom audio modes intended for specific games. Those developer-created modes will be delivered by way of a free Headset Companion App (also compatible with the Pulse line) on the PlayStation Store.

Writers Guild of America gives award to The Last of Us

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 06:30 AM PST

It's no secret that Naughty Dog's The Last of Us has taken home a lot of proverbial hardware this year. It can add one more trophy to the case, as Neil Druckmann, the game's writer, won the 2014 Writers Guild of America's Outstanding Achievement in Writing for Video Games.

Druckmann beat out the writers of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Batman: Arkham Origins, God of War: Ascension, and Lost Planet 3. Naughty Dog isn't exactly a newcomer to the award; Amy Hennig won it in 2012 for her work on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.

The accolades likely won't stop here though. The Last of Us is nominated in five categories at next month's GDC Awards, and it's unlikely that it'll get shut out.

Bittersweet: Hyper Light Drifter pushed back

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 06:00 AM PST

The team behind Hyper Light Drifter has set a new release schedule and, yep, you know what's coming: this is yet another Kickstarter project that's grown large enough in scope to necessitate a delay. Backers will get to participate in a closed beta "near June," while the full release will happen this holiday season -- first on Steam, followed by other platforms "shortly thereafter."

According to designer Alex Preston, "The original approximation of a June release was for a game developed with just myself and [lead programmer] Beau Blyth, something much smaller; I would have been creating art for the next six months, with much rougher edges and animation. Since we have been given this remarkable opportunity, the project has evolved, requires polish and finesse that I was not originally afforded. We are able to make the experience whole, into the full vision I had wanted it to be."

Really, you can't ask for much more than that. Hyper Light Drifter is hitting all of the right notes for me and I'd love nothing more than for it to be the best game it can possibly be. In the words of Preston: "I remember yelling at Nintendo Power whenever Zelda: OoT was delayed, and now I fully understand why they did it and how it paid off in the end."

So many things to show you! [Kickstarter]

Nintendo consoles, handhelds to share a common platform

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 05:30 AM PST

Following Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's presentation to investors last week, a Q&A session was held and one of his responses -- the one about console and handheld hardware becoming more like brothers -- grabbed our attention. The full Q&A has since been translated and that specific answer is much more informative than the snippet we originally saw.

Asked if last year's organization changes within Nintendo would mean the integration of console and handheld devices into one system, or cost savings associated with resource efficiencies, Iwata said "...we are going to create a system that can absorb the Wii U architecture adequately. When this happens, home consoles and handheld devices will no longer be completely different, and they will become like brothers in a family of systems.

"Still, I am not sure if the form factor (the size and configuration of the hardware) will be integrated. In contrast, the number of form factors might increase. Currently, we can only provide two form factors because if we had three or four different architectures, we would face serious shortages of software on every platform." Iwata cited iOS and Android as examples Nintendo should follow in terms of having multiple devices that share a common platform.

Previously, Nintendo"always ended up developing a system that was completely different from its predecessor," excluding the GameCube and Wii, which had a similar architecture. Under the new plan and with a more integrated R&D division, there will be fewer game shortages during the launch periods of new systems, according to Iwata.

Pre-order not required to get into the Titanfall beta

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 05:00 AM PST

Respawn's gearing up for its big February 14 beta for Titanfall, but no one really knows yet how to get into it. In the past, many high-profile games have handed out their beta invites to people that pre-ordered. That won't be the case here.

According to studio founder Vince Zampella, you don't need to pre-order Titanfall to gain entry to the beta. Besides that tidbit of information, Zampella remarked that some things have to be approved before he can announce any more details.

It's rumored that the beta will be exclusive through GameStop in the US and Zappos in France. If that's true, these may go out to members of their rewards clubs, or something similar. The only thing that is known is that February 14 isn't very far away, so we won't have to wait long to find out.

Orchid rotates in as Killer Instinct's free character

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 04:30 AM PST

Like Jago, Sabrewulf, and Thunder before her, Orchid is the new free playable character for Double Helix's Killer Instinct. As the trend has gone recently, she'll probably only be available for a week, at which point another fighter will get the call to take temporary control of the spotlight.

If you're not the type to stay commited to characters for one week at a time (which I'm sure Microsoft is banking on), they're available permanently for $4.99 a piece or $19.99 for the entire season's cast. Spinal was added just last week, and it has to be damn near impossible to kill something that's already dead.

Oniken is coming to Steam with a few updates

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 04:00 AM PST

The Contra/Ninja Gaiden inspired Oniken is coming to Steam this Wednesday, developer JoyMasher has informed Destructoid. The Steam release will come with a few updates in tow, including updated visuals, new and rearranged soundtracks, and level balancing.

You'll also get leaderboards and achievements, as well as the new Hardcore mode, which forces you to beat the game without continues, and rewards you with a new ending. If you love old school platformers I'd highly recommend Oniken, as it's a blast to play.

The Walking Dead's next episode is 'around the corner'

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 03:30 AM PST

The second chapter of the second season of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead looks to be imminent, but details are scarse. The developer tweeted a picture of Clementine with the caption "Still. Not. Bitten.," adding that the next installment is "just around the corner."

Lately, Telltale has made a habit out of teasing these things about a week ahead of time, most recently with The Wolf Among Us, which will see its second episode, Smoke & Mirrors, release tomorrow. Maybe Telltale's intent to flood all of our foreseeable spare time in the near future with its episodic stories. Maybe it's determined to silence the outcries that it's not doing anything. Regardless, it's not a bad situation to be in right now for Telltale fans.

Need for Speed movie trailer shows who's a better driver

So, the Super Bowl was yesterday, huh? I bet you either love sports, or hates sports, or are somewhere between those two extremes. Maybe you're even really apathetic about them. What an interesting and unique viewpoint you probably have.

Well, if you happened to be one of the 90 billion people watching (all numbers approximate), you may have caught a new trailer for the Need for Speed movie. Here's an extended look at that in which everyone does really dangerous and irresponsible stuff in cars. Sorry, guess I spoiled that a bit.

Ender's Game on Blu-Ray Tournament on Twitch

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 02:00 AM PST

The Ender's Game on Blu-Ray Tournament is the first tournament on Twitch and MLG to be sponsored by a major movie studio. In this case, it's Lionsgate, who are helping foot the bill for the more than $20,000 in prize money for the upcoming StarCraft II tournament.

See what they did there? Ender's Game is about a boy being trained to take on a space battle.

"The skills used to develop battle leaders in Ender’s Game are drawn from real world gaming, especially the types of skills used by premier tournament level players,” said Anne Parducci, Executive Vice President of Marketing, Lionsgate.  “We are excited to partner with Major League Gaming and Twitch, both leaders in the eSports world, to present this unprecedented movie tie-in aimed directly at those who take gaming seriously."

The tourney will host 32 of the top StarCraft II players, with the first round kicking off on Twitch starting February 5 and running through February 9. The second round will begin on February 16.

The winners from each event will go onto the Ender's Game on Blu-Ray Tournament on February 22, where the winner will take $10,000.

Of course, this all falls inline with the release of Ender's Game on Blu-ray, coming February 11.

The Behemoth to co-sponsor indie game event BitSummit

Japanese indie dev event BitSummit is set to kick off in early March in Kyoto. Last year's event was a huge success, and its organizers are working hard to create an even better follow-up for this year.

The Behemoth has announced that they will co-sponsor this year's event, BitSummit MMXIV: Sound + Vision, Kyoto Indie Game Festival, to support the flourishing Japanese indie developer community.

"We believe that through events like BitSummit MMXIV, independent Japanese developers can build a healthy counterpoint to the industrial strength AAA video game industry in Japan," said The Behemoth in their announcement

We'll be there beginning March 7 to report on the event and its announcements, as well as to rock out to its huge list of musical guests. More details soon!

Minecraft surpasses 14 million copies sold on PC

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 12:00 AM PST

Markus "Notch" Persson and Mojang are counting their millions, but that doesn't necessarily mean dollars in this instance. Well, indirectly it does. Notch revealed via Twitter recently that the PC version of Minecraft has recently passed the 14 million sales milestone. That tally doesn't seem set to slow down anytime soon.

Computer players aren't the only ones that love them some Minecraft. In December 2013, it was announced that the game had sold in excess of 10 million copies on Xbox 360. With a newly released PlayStation 3 version that's already passed one million sales, and Xbox One, PS4, and PS Vita iterations all in the works, these numbers are probably going to do nothing but increase dramatically. All just bricks in Notch's big, blocky empire.

Dark Souls II on PC looks set for May 31

Posted: 02 Feb 2014 11:00 PM PST

Only a bit shy of a month away from Dark Souls II's console release, many are left wondering when exactly the PC version will be unleashed upon the masses. From Software's said in the past that it would see a slight delay so as to make sure it doesn't half-ass the game on PC, but nothing more concrete's been revealed about the length of that wait. Luckily, Amazon may have just cleared that up.

According to a listing on Amazon for a digital copy of the game, Dark Souls II will release on PC on May 31, 2014. Of course, Amazon isn't always entirely accurate with these sort of details -- sometimes using them more as rough estimate placeholders. However, even if the Saturday May 31 date is off, it's probably not far from when the actual release will be.

So, that leaves almost three entire months between the console and PC versions' respective releases. Three more months to anxiously await the many cruel fates that await you. Three more months before the self-loathing kicks in. Three more months your keyboard gets to be not smashed to smithereens.

Review: Fable Anniversary

Posted: 02 Feb 2014 06:01 PM PST

Fable and I have a history together. Ever since I learned of its existence in an official Xbox Magazine under the codename "Project Ego," I was enthralled by the promises of Peter Molyneux. Back then, he basically could do no wrong, creating masterpiece after masterpiece at Bullfrog Productions.

But in 1997 he left and founded Lionhead Studios, eventually crafting the very first game in the Fable franchise. The first entry didn't really follow up with any of the promises Molyneux made, but despite that fact, it ended up being a serviceable little action-adventure romp.

Not much has changed with the updated Fable Anniversary, for better or for worse.
