Huge News of the Week: End of the Road Posted: 01 Feb 2014 12:55 PM PST Well this is it guys, the surprise series finale of Destructoid Huge News of the Week. Show co-captain Caitlin Cooke is moving out of state in a few days, so we wont be able to shoot the show irl on a weekly basis anymore. All in all, I think we had a pretty good run. Thanks to everyone who watched and contributed to the show. No matter how rough of a week Caitlin and I may have had, knowing that we had this show to share with you would always put a smile on our faces. If you have an idea of what kind of Huge exclusive video content we could deliver to you next, leave a comment here or email our Video Warlock Max Scoville with your ideas and suggestions. We should be happy together forever, you and I. See you next time.
WildStar lets you customize the crap out of everything Posted: 01 Feb 2014 10:15 AM PST If it's one thing the upcoming MMO WildStar has going for it, besides a beautiful art style, it's the amount of customization it affords players. The latest DevSpeak video from the team at Carbine Studios delves into some of the more lavish enhancements players can look forward to when the game drops later this year. Between this, EverQuest Next, and The Elder Scrolls Online it's going to be a busy year for many MMO gamers.
Tecmo PS2 Classic Trapt coming to PSN next week Posted: 01 Feb 2014 09:00 AM PST Trapt is coming to PlayStation Network next week, according to the latest episode of the PlayStation Blogcast. A spiritual successor to Tecmo's Deception series, the strategy action title initially released on PlayStation 2 back in 2005. Players take on the role of Allura, a princess accused of murdering her father. On the run from a band of assassins, the exiled maiden is forced set a series of deadly traps to defend herself from her pursuers. The PS2 Classic arrives just ahead of the Deception IV: Blood Ties, which is scheduled to ensnare western PlayStation 3 and Vita owners this March. Sounds like a perfect opportunity for longtime fans to reminisce and newcomers to get a taste of what they've been missing. PlayStation Blogcast 107: Dark Souls 2025 [PlayStation Blog]
Zombies make out in this Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z video Posted: 01 Feb 2014 08:00 AM PST Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z looks disgusting; over-the-top; insane; and unabashedly offensive, yet I still can't wait to give it a go. The latest trailer above sheds some light on a few of the game's more interesting costumes, and let's just say the school girl outfit is not quite what one would expect. Will you be picking up Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z when it drops this March?
Atlus delivering Conception 2 to Europe later this year Posted: 01 Feb 2014 07:00 AM PST Prepare to take it down a notch, forever wounded Atlus fans of Europe. Baby-making role-playing game Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars will make the journey across the Atlantic as a digital-only release sometime during Q2 2014. So yeah, cartridge lovers will still be a tad miffed, I suppose. And while that might be a sticking point for some, there's always the option to import a copy of the region free PlayStation Vita version, which is slated to hit North American shores on April 15. So, please, do at least try to be happy.
Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day heads west this spring Posted: 01 Feb 2014 06:00 AM PST Amazing news, everyone! Bandai Namco has announced plans to localize Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day for PlayStation 3 in the Americas, Europe, and Australasia this spring. The side-scroller is the fifth and final installment in Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo's anime anthology, the Short Peace project. It comes by way of Crispy's, the studio behind Tokyo Jungle, and was written and directed by none other than Grasshopper Manufacture boss Goichi Suda. The story follows a young assassin on the run from demons, which players must evade whilst traversing colorful obstacle courses in this fast-paced action platformer. I don't know about you, but I am soooo ready to dig into this. I can't wait.
Pale Machine is a playable mouth and eyeball music video Posted: 01 Feb 2014 05:30 AM PST What did you get on Christmas last year? If you're a daily Destructoid reader, then the answer is "a free weird videogame" in the form of Beokay, a music infused space shooting romp. Beokay was the first release in the Pale Machine Expansion Pack, a series of free games that coincide with an album of songs by Calum Bowen. The latest game in the series is by Ben Esposito (Perfect Stride, Unfinished Swan), and it's one of the most Katamari-ish yet. I enjoyed interacting with the world, discovering what I might see and feel, all while listening to the strange and energetic music. Warning: there may be some abstract boobs in there. Don't play if that might cause problems for you.
Review: Dungeon Keeper (Mobile) Posted: 01 Feb 2014 05:00 AM PST Bullfrog's 1997 strategy game Dungeon Keeper is a bona fide classic. It took the typical simulation conventions of the time and added some attitude, some horns, and a whole lot of charm to warp it into something truly special. Leave it to EA then to come in and take a demonic dump on the franchise by creating a freemium "re-imagining" with timers and microtransactions.
WayForward celebrates Wii U sales with Spin the Bottle Posted: 01 Feb 2014 04:30 AM PST Nintendo recently announced plans to reward consumers who buy games on their consoles by making future purchases less expensive for them. Like a lot of the stuff they announced at that big press conference, it's actually something they've been doing for a while, but not too many people had been talking about it. I hope that's not the case with the current "Super Indie Connection Sale" on the Wii U eShop. If you own Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2, Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition, Toki Tori 2+, or Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party over the next week and a half, you can get any of the other games for 60% off. It's one of the best deals going on consoles right now. Out of all the games on that list, Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party is probably the least well known, likely because it's similar to Johann Sebastian Joust. You really have to play to understand the appeal. While I'm not 100% that this video from WayForward will do much to change that, it's nice to see them take the time to give the game a public vote of confidence. Maybe that will help it find its audience.
The best stuff on Destructoid this week [2/1] Posted: 01 Feb 2014 04:00 AM PST [We post a lot of articles here at Destructoid. The endless, ouroboros news cycle has us burning the snake at both ends, which will ultimately push big news, thoughtful original pieces, and all sorts of other great content off of the front page. Check here every Saturday for my attempt to rectify that.] Last Saturday you might have noticed the absence of this weekly compendium. Maybe you didn't notice, but felt a pang in your heart, as if for a moment you knew what it felt like to be stabbed, to have all breath drawn from your lungs and life momentarily pushed into fleeting perspective. A cool chill, just for a second, nearly imperceptible. Indeed, there was not one last week. But there is one this Saturday. That's what matters between us, isn't it? This moment we can both lose ourselves in, you behind your keyboard, me behind mind, lost and locked in a temporary intemporality, divorced from hardship, heartache. I treasure our time together. This was the week before last's. Let's begin anew.
| Plague Inc: Evolved headed to Steam with multiplayer Posted: 31 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST Ndemic Creations' Plague Inc. is one of those mobile games to do so well that it would be silly not to bring it to other platforms, in this case PC. An expanded version of the game, Plague Inc: Evolved, is headed to Steam Early Access on February 20, 2014. This release will have both coopearative and competitive multiplayer; custom scenarios (e.g., plagues and worlds) that can be shared on Steam Workshop, which sounds potentially hilarious; improved graphics; and more data in the form of stats, graphics, and replays. As for the original mobile version of Plague Inc, that's not going anywhere. According to Ndemic, "We have designed Plague Inc: Evolved carefully so that updates can easily be applied to games on PC and mobile. We still have loads of plans for Plague Inc. and lots of new updates are on their way." A price hasn't been given yet, but expect the PC game to cost more than $0.99.
