Official NES Remix contest canceled because of exploits Posted: 04 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST In case you hadn't heard, NES Remix hit the Wii U for $15 after a surprise announcement during a recent Nintendo Direct. While it could have been a whole lot more interesting, retro enthusiasts alike have been enjoying it -- myself included! To help promote the game a special contest was being held worldwide to see how quickly you could complete a specific stage. Sadly, the director of the game has confirmed that an unspecified amount of people have exploited the challenge through an unconfirmed method, so it's been entirely canceled. After doing some digging, it appears as if the exploit involves constantly pausing the game to cheat the clock. Well, that's a shame. ハヤシダ [Miiverse]

Risk of Rain is my new roguelike obsession Posted: 04 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST Given my taste in games these days, I should have been able to get into Rogue Legacy. It contains most of the elements I look for in this new generation of roguelikes which may or may not actually be much like Rogue, but for reasons that remain a mystery, the experience never fully clicked. I like what I've played of the game -- which is admittedly not a whole lot -- but I'm also happy to let Rogue Legacy just sit in my Steam library unnoticed. Disappointing, but plenty of you did enjoy it and there will always be others for me. This style of game is decidedly "in" right now. The last roguelikes I got heavily invested in were The Binding of Isaac and Spelunky. I'm talking hundreds and hundreds of hours between the two. And that's nothing compared to people out there who can boast four-digit hour counts. I'm certain they exist. While it might be too early to call it now at only 27 hours of play ("only"), I'm going to do so anyway; I think I've found my latest obsession, and it's one not nearly enough of you are playing: Risk of Rain. In an effort to help change that, I've examined why I find this game so compelling. Read more... |
Communitoid episodes 024-027: So many episodes Posted: 04 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST Communitoid is Dtoid's semi-monthly, community-focused podcast. Want to be a guest on a future episode? Hit us up! Did you know that you can fit four episodes of a podcast between the numbers 24 and 27? It's true! And that's exactly how many episodes of Communitoid we've recorded lately that you might not know about! We've got two special community guests in KingSigy and OpiumHerz (yay!), Joanna's last episode (not yay), and the unveiling of our new co-host King Foom! See below for details on each episode. And if you're at MAGFest this weekend, Aaron and Conor are going to be hosting a live recording, so follow them both on Twitter for details on when that's going down! Read more... |
The best toys and anime of 2013 Posted: 04 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST Our sister sites Tomopop and Japanator had their own respective end of the year awards, just like we did! On Tomopop, they named the gorgeous Poison Ivy figure from Sideshow as the best static figure of 2013. A little more gaming related, J*Ryu and VampyBitMe won best designers for their sculpted Metroids, while best plush went to Penny Arcade's Twisp & Catsby. There's several more award categories if you want to see what the other best toys were for 2013. Japanator also had several categories, a couple of which were gaming related focusing on games released by Japanese companies. Fire Emblem Awakening won best videogame of 2013, while Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch took home best soundtrack. As for anime of the year, that went to Attack on Titan. Here's all the award winners that will also hopefully give you something new to watch this weekend while you're at it.

This explains the aliens from Aliens: Colonial Marines Posted: 04 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST Look, it's first weekend after two major holidays that just passed with Christmas and New Years. There's not much happening, and truth be told ... I'd still post this video regardless because there's some funny moments. Specifically I cracked up at the Aliens: Colonial Marines and the Battlefield 4 bits. (Via Reddit)

Here's the latest from The Witch and the Hundred Knight Posted: 04 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST Here's our latest look at NIS America's The Witch and the Hundred Knight. There's a little over 30 seconds of new gameplay footage, and a handful of screens to check out in our gallery. Like this one. Oh silly girl, you got fat from eating so much chocolate. How are you still alive scantily clad anime girl?! HAHAHAH someone please save me. Look out for this one to release on the PlayStation 3 on March 21 in Europe, and March 25 in North America. EyeX lets you interact with games just by using your eyes Posted: 04 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST SteelSeries has partnered with Tobii Technology to create an eye-tracking peripheral set to come out mid-2014. The device will let gamers use their eyes to control certain aspects of games. The eye-tracking is used in conjunction with mouse and keyboard controls. So for instance you'll use your eyes to aim where your character needs to shoot, and then pull the trigger with your mouse button. The Tobii EyeX dev kit is available for pre-order from Tobii for $95, and those attending CES this year will be able to try out the new tech. Interesting idea, but all I care about in this general field is the Oculus Rift. I needs that.

How to politely rob someone in DayZ Posted: 04 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST You don't always have to be a giant dick towards other players in DayZ. I mean it's still pretty dickish to rob someone, but at least it was a nice robbery. (Via Reddit) Read more... |
Check out these Persona 3 battle system prototypes Posted: 04 Jan 2014 01:44 AM PST Wow! Now, don't get me wrong. I love Atlus' Persona 3 just the way it is and I wouldn't change a thing, but check out this posting from game director Katsura Hoshino from back in 2007. Its two videos show off a prototype of Persona 3's battle system. Fights take place on the field themselves in the first video. Notice how shadows just seem to pop up from out of the ground. That's so cool. You also have to love the victory dances. The other video shows a battle start a bit closer to what we're used to, though with a pretty slick visual style that I wouldn't mind seeing in another Shin Megami Tensei game. It seems that memory limitations had them using this second method over the first one. This old posting was shared by a Japanese-English translator that I follow. If you're interested (and you should be!), this blog has translated another one of Hoshino's postings on Persona 3's development, showing a tool that they used to make social links. It's some pretty interesting stuff that any Persona fan would enjoy.

No mod tools for Titanfall at launch on PC Posted: 04 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST Titanfall on PC won't offer any sort of modding tools when the game launches on March 11, 2014. Co-founder Vince Zampella confirmed this on Twitter when a fan asked him, but he did add that the studio "will have to evaluate after launch" for the need of mods. I've never been big into the modding scene, so this doesn't really bother me. What I do want to know is what they're going to do about the server situation. After SimCity and now Battlefield 4, I'm concerned with how the game will handle especially with its heavy dependance on servers.

Beware a trojan targeting World of Warcraft accounts Posted: 04 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST Blizzard has identified malware that's been targeting World of Warcraft users recently which was able to steal account info and the authenticator password. The trojan is a fake version the Curse Client, the add-on management program for the game. Users have been coming across this on a fake version of the Curse website as they search for "curse client" on major search engines. The Battle.net support site suggests those affected to remove the trojan by deleting the fake Curse Client and running scans from an updated Malwarebytes. Most security programs should be able to identify the threat now, and those compromised can get in touch with Blizzard.
