How nice: GOG.com adds 31 FLAC soundtracks

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST

One of my favorite features of GOG.com is its inclusion of bonuses at no additional charge, particularly when it comes to the "good old games," which these days isn't the sole focus of the distributor. Extras can range from rare artwork to full manuals to soundtracks and in my experience, these materials often help fuel feelings of nostalgia.

Going a step further this week, GOG.com has added 31 FLAC-encoded soundtracks to games like Another World, Darklands, Earthworm Jim, Heroes of Might and Magic, MDK 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Shadow Warrior, and The Witcher. This music is of course free if you already own any of the affected games -- find the full list at the link below.

I'm by no means an audiophile, but I appreciate a gesture like this when I see one.

Why Mario leaves Yoshi outside of Bowser's castle

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST

Have a little levity to end your week from the gang at Dorkly, as they depict a scenario in which Yoshi takes offense at being left outside of Bowser's castle by Mario.

This is why I like cats. You'd never have this conversation with a cat. Of course, that's because the cat would completely disregard your wishes and just wander in on its own the second the door is opened, but at least there's no backtalk from an inferior creature.

ArenaNet co-founder joins State of Decay developer

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST

There was a strong desire for the concepts found in Undead Labs' zombie survival game State of Decay to appear in a full-blown multiplayer game and that sentiment isn't going away anytime soon, I don't think. While no new announcements have been made on that front, a recent hire will seemingly help take the studio in this direction.

Undead Labs has brought the co-founder of Guild Wars maker ArenaNet and TERA developer En Masse Entertainment, Patrick Wyatt, on board. In his written introduction, Wyatt was only able to drop hints, but he did say "I specialize in developing really big multiplayer games. So I guess maybe I'll be working on something like that, at least as soon as I get one of the cool lab coats everyone around here has."

Sounds like a great hire, especially since he's far from the only person at Undead to have worked on Guild Wars. Reunion! Last we heard, "there are big things going on with State of Decay."

Watch video, buy cameras: Xbox One, 360 getting GoPro app

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST

Look, lions are wild animals and you should not endeavor to hug them. This is not a Disney movie.

Camera-maker GoPro is partnering with Xbox to create The GoPro Channel app, through which you can stream curated GoPro footage. You can also buy GoPro cameras and accessories directly through the app, which is a first for Xbox, aside from the Pizza Hut ordering app.

The app is coming to 360 in spring and One in summer for Xbox Live Gold members.

The DKC: Tropical Freeze video to see above all others

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST

In the months since it was first announced, I have warmed up to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze considerably. Part of my initial reaction stems from disappointment over Retro Studios not getting back to Metroid Prime, but I've since gotten over that. And it feels like every bit of news since has been positive, further pushing me in the right direction.

After seeing this overview video from Nintendo of Japan, that's it. I can't not be sold on Tropical Freeze any longer. Props in particular to composers David Wise and Kenji Yamamoto for making what sounds like an absolute joy of a soundtrack. Aquatic Ambiance, folks. It's coming back.

Dark Souls II DLC will depend on fan feedback

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST

It was admirable of From Software to treat Dark Souls II as "a full game," in the words of producer Takeshi Miyazoe, and not plan for DLC as a required part of production. I don't think any of us are expecting anything less from the studio. That said, after Artorias of the Abyss turned out the way it did, I wouldn't mind DLC for the sequel. Not at all.

Talking with OXM, Miyazoe has since expressed more of an openness to the concept, saying "There is definitely potential, I think. Again, it's all about fan feedback. Right now we are concentrating on completing what we've got, but I think there are next steps on how we can expand on Dark Souls II. So I'm not really ready to say look forward to more information, but I think the potential is definitely there."

So, yes -- count me as a fan who would like more Dark Souls content.

Hardline 008: Please understand

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 10:15 AM PST

On this week's Hardline, Steven and Conrad joined me for what turned out to be a lengthy discussion about the future of Nintendo. It's been suggested that the company make games for mobile, but is that really such a good idea? And is there any salvaging the Wii U?

We covered those questions and more, as well as Conception II, Microsoft buying Gears of War, and we kept talking about Grand Theft Auto for reasons I can no longer remember.

For the audio-only episode, you can subscribe on iTunes and RSS, or download directly.

Here's some more screens for Kodoku for the PS4 and Vita

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST

Have you been itching for another horror game? Well Kodoku may be your huckleberry, as it looks suitably horrific. New screens have emerged, showing off the game's engine and a number of cutscenes, most of them filled with blood and anguish. One dude even exclaims that "there is so much blood..." in one of them so you know things are going down.

Joking aside, I think this looks really intriguing, especially since the creatures are billed as "Lovecraftian inspired by Japanese folklore." Look for Kodoku on the PS4 and Vita at some point in 2015.

Live show: The Ship

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Could there possibly be a better way to finish off your week than to take a pleasure cruise with some of your closest friends, and ruthlessly murder all of them? I can't think of one, so that's exactly what we're going to do tonight on Mash Tactics, as we play a few rounds of The Ship.

I seemed to have missed the boat (hehe) on this title when it was first released, but after finally digging in and playing few rounds with some friends, it was instantly decided that this absolutely must make an appearance on the live show. Come on by, and join in on the murder, mystery, and mayhem with us this evening, as the bodies pile up, and friendships suddenly dissolve. If you don't have the game, don't fret, as it's on sale today on Steam for just a few dollars, and we may just have a few copies to give away as well. Get on over to Dtoid.TV and check it out!

Breaking Madden's Super Bowl is better than this Sunday's

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 09:15 AM PST

We approach another manicured, partially tax-exempt-NFL, $9B/year industry football game this Super Bowl Sunday. We'll be lucky to get a sign of life like Richard Sherman's postgame interview two weeks ago. No, it will be a prim, proper affair. Hopefully the lights go out again or a bird freezes mid flight, careening onto the field and knocking away the game winning pass.

Breaking Madden's Jon Bois is not content leaving it up to hope. "No other scenario I've built in Madden has been so abjectly cruel or unfair," Bois explains.

PS+ subscriptions have tripled since launch of PS4

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST

Sony is on a roll with PlayStation Plus, and they have recently announced that their subscriber base has tripled since the launch of the PlayStation 4. This news comes by way of a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe conference, in which they announced the release of the PS Vita Slim.

Not only is this due to the value of getting free games on three systems now (PS3, PS4, and Vita), but it seems likely that the PS+ requirement to play online has something to do with it. Hopefully Sony can keep the good times rolling with Plus, as their recent offerings have been pretty killer.

Spearhead: We found Sony more helpful than MS or Nintendo

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST

Making a brand new game studio isn't easy. So imagine the undertaking of creating a new brand, crafting a never-before-seen IP, gathering a production crew, and shipping a game in a year. That's what Spearhead Studios did with Tiny Brains, and they went through quite the adventure to do it.

I had a chat with Spearhead's Simon Darveau and Malik Boukhira to find out what makes an indie studio tick, what they've learned so far, and what they have planned for the future.

Games with Gold: Dead Island, Toy Soldiers: Cold War

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 08:15 AM PST

Microsoft's Games with Gold promotion is becoming a parody of itself. In February, Xbox Live Gold subscribers are once again getting two free titles, one that is the first installment of a popular franchise, and another that's an enjoyable but perhaps under-appreciated Xbox Live Arcade title. Those are Dead Island and Toy Soldiers: Cold War, respectively.

As ever, the first free game -- in this case, Dead Island -- will become free for Gold members on the first of the month. So, tomorrow. You'll then have until February 16 to download it at which point game number two, Cold War, goes free for the rest of the month.

You really should make a note to download that second one, though -- you get to shoot at tanks as an offbrand Rambo toy. It's pretty special. I also much preferred its setting over the first Toy Soldiers, so if you resisted it for similar reasons, consider getting the sequel.

Impressions: Killer Instinct: Spinal

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST

Killer Instinct surprised a lot of people when it hit the Xbox One. No one really expected much from Double Helix given its track record, but a decent following has been with the game ever since, and there's even an arcade stick to quell the most hardcore of fan's nerves.

But the fact remains: the roster is still bare, and even if the game is fairly balanced, people need more fighters to tinker with to stay interested. One such fighter is Spinal -- a classic character from the original that was just added to the game.

The Wolf Among Us Episode 2 finally out next week

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 07:50 AM PST

Telltale Games has seriously tested the patience of The Wolf Among Us players with the release of the next episode, Smoke & Mirrors. Following the series' debut all the way back in October, Episode 2 is nearly ready for release.

Smoke & Mirrors will first hit PC, Mac, and North American PlayStation Network on Tuesday, February 4 followed by releases on Xbox Live and EU PSN a day later. The iOS version is also dropping next week, though Telltale doesn't have an exact date just yet.

I've thankfully managed to avoid this all by waiting until the entire season run is out before starting.

Friday Night Fights: SK8 or die!

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST

Look, I make no bones about how old I am. I've never hid my age from anyone and I know my limits. Turning 40, as I recently did, tends to make people feel like, they need to finally grow up, finally become an adult.

To hell with that, I say! Just because I'm getting older doesn't mean I have to stop doing the things I enjoy, no friggin way! I still skate with my friends, I still skate vert ramps with my friends, sure it hurts more the next day but I can't see myself stopping anytime soon.

Same goes for gaming, I may not have as much time as I once did , but I'm not gonna stop any time soon. I've found that, the older I get, the more appreciation I have for the smaller things, I've noticed my likes and dislikes towards gaming have changed, where once I was very vocal about all the hullabaloo in the industry, now I just, sit back and not worry so much. I'd rather spend my time having fun and enjoying myself than sitting around always pissing and moaning about stuff that, has little to no bearing on my life.

Anyway, sorry to rant like that, I just felt like I needed to get that off my chest.

Natsume confirms that Nintendo is working on GBA VC

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

Once upon a time, Nintendo delivered a handful of Game Boy Advance classics (like Metroid Fusion) to the 3DS as part of the Ambassador program. The only problem is, they never really followed up on adding any GBA games after that. We've all been in some kind of limbo as to whether or not GBA support would ever really happen, but a Natsume community manager has confirmed that Nintendo is working on it.

They also confirmed that more Game Boy Color games are on the way, and that they are looking at their DS catalog to see what they could release there. This is all great news that Nintendo is open to bringing over more games, but we need to see a bigger Virtual Console push than what we've witnessed so far.

Sci-fi horror Master Reboot coming to PS3 next month

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 06:45 AM PST

Don't have a next-gen console yet? Pish posh. Who needs 'em? Especially when the current/previous gen is still getting cool new games. Next month, the psychological sci-fi horror game Master Reboot is coming to PS3. Here's an explanation from Managing Director David Banner:

To house your Soul, a family member (or yourself before you die) purchases an island on the Soul Cloud where the server will generate rooms, houses or skyscrapers that hold each and every memory from the deceased’s past, or of memories of their choosing. The game starts with you being uploaded to the Soul Cloud but something has gone wrong and you wake up on a beach not knowing who or where you are. It’s up to you to explore, solve puzzles and try to piece together your life and death.

If you check out the PlayStation Blog post you'll find more haunting, colorful scenes. The sense of something being not quite right Master Reboot is attempting to instill is a nice alternative to the shock and gore horror sect. Very Lovecraftian in its gaps. The scariest things are the unknown, after all.

The arcade racer is slated for Q2 of 2014 and features 15 different cars for use in online and offline play in one large, single city environment featuring "endless" track configurations.

Developer of Remember Me denies bankruptcy claims

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

Coinciding with Remember Me's recent addition to the PlayStation Plus program, there have been reports of "Remember" developer Dontnod's bankruptcy. But company CEO Oskar Guilbert has since denied those claims, noting that that report is false, and they are simply reorganizing their company.

He says that the reassessment was simply because they need to "re-size," and that they're even in negotiations with a "big partner" for another game. This is all fairly interesting, as I want to see what the developer can do with their second game -- I wasn't very impressed with Remember Me outside of the Bladerunner-esque atmosphere.

EA: Titanfall won't have same issues as Battlefield 4

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 05:45 AM PST

On this week's installment of "Wow, It Would Have Been Really Stupid If They Said Literally Anything Else", EA executives remarked that Titanfall won't experience the same kind of shaky launch that Battlefield 4 did. The comment came during the company's quarterly earnings call, where assuaging investor concerns tends to be a priority.

EA chalked up the Battlefield 4 debacle to trying to simultaneously launch on two new consoles, two existing consoles, PC, and a mobile app. "We were pushing innovation heavily and we're delivering 60 frames per second gameplay for 64 players plus the ability to connect via mobile tablet as a commander into the product, coupled those with some very innovative features in the gameplay side," said EA executive vice president Patrick Soderlund.

However, EA's confident that Titanfall will launch more smoothly than Battlefield 4, because it's learned from its mistakes. There was an alpha to stress test servers, and according to Respawn's Jon Shiring "During our small closed alpha, we rolled out three new server builds and completely moved players from one build to the next without interrupting gameplay. Players never noticed a difference."

This all sounds fine and dandy, but these are the exact things that you're supposed to say leading up to the launch of your mega-title. We won't have a semblance of a clue until March 11 about how the servers handle the strain of Titanfall being in the public's hands. Until then, I'm going to take these assurances with the world's largest grain of salt.

Zynga buys NaturalMotion for $527M, cuts workforce 15%

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST

Zynga has made its first big move under new CEO and former Microsoft head Don Mattrick, acquiring CSR Racing developer NaturalMotion for $527 million. The UK and US-based developer did well for itself with the mobile hit CSR Racing, but is also known for technologies used in big-budget console development, including the Euphoria physics engined licensed and used by Rockstar in Grand Theft Auto IV and V.

Zynga is dropping $391M in cash on the deal and making up the rest with 39.8M Zynga shares, Venture Beat reports. 11.6M shares are going to NaturalMotion employees who are joining Zynga.

Meanwhile, adhering to equivalent exchange, Zynga is once again laying its own people the heck off, to the tune of 314 jobs. That's 15% of its workforce and more jobs cut than the entire 260-person staff at NaturalMotion.

Cutting 15% of its staff is expected to save Zygna $35 million in 2014, which doesn't seem like all that much when you just orchestrated a $527 million acquisition, but that's why I don't wear a moneyhat.

Iwata: Nintendo 'should abandon old assumptions'

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 05:15 AM PST

Nintendo CEO Saturo Iwata had more to say following the earlier espoused plans to turn Wii U sales around, which include some mystery, non-wearable fitness advocacy device. Speaking to The Nikkei, as picked up by MCV, Iwata explained, "[W]e've been preoccupied with a fixed idea of what a game should be like. The game industry is at a turning point amid new developments like the rise of smartphones."

Of course, Nintendo has also explained it does not want its games on smart phones, but says, "We'll change the way we sell products, by managing customer information via the Internet. We'll offer discounts to steady, regular customers."

While it's nice to joke about Nintendo thinking that "using the internet" is a dramatic shift, my ears perked up at 'offering discounts to steady customers.' Nintendo is infamously against devaluing its games, leaving its first party software at launch price for years before cuts. It'll be interesting to see what it does with that.

Iwata also said, more generally, "We should abandon old assumptions about our businesses. We are considering M&As as an option. For this reason, we'll step up share buybacks," and explained that the companies previously built up cash reserves have kept them going. "Without savings, we could not have recovered from a single failure in game systems. Even now, we can afford many options because of our robust financial standing."

Nintendo opening up to the idea of mergers and acquisitions to stabilize its business is the most potentially interesting bit in there, though. Maybe they'll be acquired by Sony? (It's a joke, don't kill me).

Pac-Man Museum is a thing, coming in February

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST

Have you somehow not had enough Pac-Man in your life yet? Well Bandai Namco has just the compilation for you, as Pac-Man Museum is set to hit the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms on February 26th (the PS3 gets it on the 25th).

Museum includes Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, Pac-Land, Pac & Pal, Pac-Mania, Pac-Attack, Pac-Man Remix, and Pac-Man Battle Royale. If you buy the game early (before March 31st), you'll get Ms. Pac-Man for free.

Although it's almost criminal how many times Pac-Man has been re-released, Battle Royale could be the real draw of the package as it's relatively rare, and features a four player mode.

Halo: Spartan Assault storms to Xbox 360 today

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 04:45 AM PST

One thing that can be said for Halo: Spartan Assault is that it's certainly the most accessible of the Halo games. Hell, it's landed on about every Microsoft platform in recent memory. Today, Xbox 360 gets added to that list.

The top-down shooter hits what was formerly Xbox Live Arcade for $15. An interesting wrinkle is that users that purchased the game on Windows 8 PC or tablet, or Windows Phone 8 prior to December 15, 2013 can buy it for $5. If, you know, you want the same game twice.

I guess it shouldn't come as much surprise that this is being ported everywhere it possibly can. With Halo 5 in the works and that Steven Spielberg-produced television series, it's very obvious that Microsoft hasn't forgotten that Halo is Xbox's flagship brand.

French Titanfall is the best Titanfall

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 04:15 AM PST

Here's a new trailer for Titanfall, "The Battle Begins." In French!

Now, I know I just said French Titanfall is the best Titanfall, but then I went and looked up language support and I have to rescind that statement.

Italian Titanfall is the best Titanfall. But French Titanfall is the best non-English Titanfall I've been exposed to thus far.

As mechs rip opposing pilots out of their cockpit and thrash them by the leg, tearing every tendon and breaking every bone in their knees, and jetpack clad folks run up walls, I'm struggling to see why so many people are down on Titanfall as more of the same. Looks good to me. And I don't have to play it in English.

Killer Instinct's Spinal launches today on Xbox One

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST

Killer Instinct is still trucking along, and more fighters are on the way, starting with Spinal, who is launching today on the Xbox One. If you have the Season Pass, he's included as a free download, otherwise he can be bought piecemeal. Spinal has a decidedly pirate-esque theme to him, and he'll be able to teleport, as well as launch projectiles.

He seems like a fairly interesting character, so I'm booting up Killer Instinct as we speak to test him out! As a side note, Fulgore is still coming in March.

These Club Nintendo Animal Crossing posters are 'dawwsome

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST

I know people that are still playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Heck, I know people that are still playing old Animal Crossing games. Such is the staying power of this Nintendo franchise, and now, you can celebrate it -- in poster form!

These posters are pretty big (22" x 28"), and one of them shows off every villager in the game. 500 Coins is quite a hefty price for sure, but I don't think anyone can deny the appeal of these posters for fans.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 goes all-out on music

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 02:30 AM PST

Konami has a nice seven-minute video on the musical score for upcoming game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. As a fan of the music from the Castlevania franchise, I appreciate that they went all-out on this soundtrack, with what they say is the largest orchestra ever used in a videogame. It was recorded at legendary studio Abbey Road. For those not in the know, this is the recording studio of recording studios -- world-class stuff..

Composer Oscar Araujo is clearly not messing around when it comes to Lords of Shadow 2's score, either. It's one thing to be flashy have that big budget Hollywood movie sound, but it's another to craft something that really fits games specifically. He talks about this and his inspirations in the video.

I'm just as excited to experience the musical score as I am to play the game. I'm expecting big things from the combined effect. We won't have to wait much longer.

Lucario joins the cast of the new Smash Bros.

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST

Popular Pokemon Lucario has been confirmed for the new Smash Bros. by Masahiro Sakurai. He'll come with some changes in tow, including an "increased influence of aura," which further buffs his fighting prowess when damaged.

Sakurai muses on the fact that the addition of Lucario was due to an effort of the developer "working really hard" to expand the roster. I'm not personally crazy about Lucario as a character, but I think he's a unique addition to the game, and I'm glad he's still in.

Razer is getting into the Xbox One market

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST

Razer has announced today that it's getting into the Xbox One game, with a new partnership with Microsoft. A controller is definitely in the works, as is an arcade stick, and "more products" to come. The company is teasing more information in the coming weeks.

Although people have mixed feelings on Razer, this is easily a good thing for consumers, as there will be more options available, which won't force you to use the official products. Hopefully someone will jump into the PS4 market at some point and develop a controller with a superior battery.

Warner Bros. cancels DLC for Wii U Arkham Origins

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST

Batman: Arkham Origins hit multiple platforms last year, and in addition to a few costumes and a challenge map pack, the game's Season Pass is set to deliver a new story campaign. But it appears as if the Wii U will not be joining in on the party, as the new story DLC has been canceled.

An errant Nintendo of America customer support claim has been out in the wild noting that customers will be refunded the full amount of the Season Pass ($19.99), and that the DLC has been canceled. VG247 has verified the claim, and a Warner Bros. representative has stated that "based on fan demand, [we have] made the decision to remove its offering of the upcoming all-new story campaign for the Wii U."

There really isn't much to say about this situation other than the fact that third parties seem to be having trouble with the Wii U in some form or another.
