Beware the Backyard in Guilty Gear Xrd's arcade opening Posted: 30 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST Some sort of Jumanji book about the secret Backyard gets hidden away, but an evil power erupts from the Backyard itself (kind of like The Gate) threatening the world and, uh, only the power of cheesy rock and roll and drop dead gorgeous faux 2D animation can stop it. Whatever, I don't care, Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- looks as pretty as it's name is stupid. I still can't believe that's 3D. How am I going to complain about how 2D is the best D if 3D can look this good, this 2D?
White Xbox One & Crackdown 3 Leaks, PS Vita Slim in UK & Posted: 30 Jan 2014 02:30 PM PST An flurry of supposed Xbox leaks in the net, with one pointing to a likely commercial release of white Xbox One's. The UK is definitely getting Slim Vita's, but maybe not getting multiple colors. Octodad: Dadliest Catch is out and you should probably go play that. Also, it's got this weird trailer. Nintendo continues its struggle for the attention of the masses by announcing DS games for the Wii U Virtual Console, but also wants to give that whole health monitoring peripheral concept another go. Sony continues it's streak of strong Playstation Plus content. And, Twisted Pixel has announced that LocoCycle will also be headed to 360 and PC, releasing on Valentine's Day.
| Killzone: Shadow Fall has sold over 2.1M copies Posted: 30 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST Killzone: Shadow Fall was the one big old "next gen" carnival Sony had to stick to its PlayStation 4 and it seems that time in the uncontested limelight proved positive for the underdog series. The PlayStation 4 sold 4.2 million consoles in 2013. It seems half of those owners also bought Shadow Fall, which boasts 2.1 million global sales as of January 15, 2014. This includes physical copies and digital -- I'd like to see what the percentage breakdown there is. Worldwide software sales were at about 10 million since launch earlier this month, so the new Killzone boasts an impressive chunk of that. It certainly has to be the best the series has performed thus far. It will be mildly interesting to see if the next big thing, Infamous: Second Son, continues the trend. | American McGee's Kickstarter project $1.7M over budget Posted: 30 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST American McGee's (Alice) Akaneiro: Demon Hunters seemed like a success. It reached a modest funding goal of $200,000 on Kickstarter, launched in-browser, and made it to Greenlight. All this it did a year ago. However, the game is not finished, and won't be soon. Unfortunately, between Kickstarter funding and sales, the game only made $300,000, while Spicy Horse has spent $2 million on development, leaving the project $1.7 million "in the hole," as McGee put it in a Kickstarter backer update. "The core development team has been reduced in size to just two people," McGee continued, explaining that progress on Akaneiro would be significantly slowed. If Spicy Horse's other project, The Gate, does well, the company may be able to allocate more resources towards continuing Akaneiro's development. McGee further explained in a comment on the post that, "the idea that $200k would finish everything was arrived at under the assumption that Akaneiro would sustain itself. It didn't have to be a runaway success but it needed to cover costs. Unfortunately, what we found upon release was some architectural problems (this is why co-op is behind); issues upgrading our GUI - the one we used was compatible with Unity 4.0 but NOT Unity 4.5 which required redoing the ENTIRE GUI; and feedback that told us the game simply wasn't fun." As always, backer beware. Akaneiro: Demon Hunters devs 'in the hole' $1.7M [Polygon] |
Killer Instinct to put rage-quitting players in 'jail' Posted: 30 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST In detailing an upcoming patch for Killer Instinct, developer Double Helix Games has broken down its plans for rage quitters. Players whose disconnect percentage rises above 15 percent in ranked multiplayer matches will be sent to "jail," after which point they'll need to wait 24 hours before they can restart their life as a decent member of society. While locked away, these players will only be matched against other jailed members. Every time a player gets sent back -- for instance, their disconnect percentage returns to 15 percent or higher and they quit early again -- the amount of jail time increases by 24 hours, up to a cap of 120 hours. And to make this all clear, quitters will get a special icon while jailed. It's a system that's been done before in other competitive games, but I do like that name. 1/30 Developer Notes: Spinal, "Jail" system, and fixes. [Double Helix Games]
Next Car Game makes over $1M on Steam Early Access Posted: 30 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST FlatOut maker Bugbear Entertainment's Next Car Game has loads of potential -- have you seen the impressive destruction physics? -- but it didn't find a proper audience on Kickstarter. Before the campaign could come to a sad close, the company shut it down. It's since turned to Steam Early Access, where the demolition derby racing title has found tremendous success. Next Car Game has made over $1 million, topping its original funding goal on Kickstarter in a single week. I had wanted to become more invested in the project but after the crowdfunding imitative went south, I backed away. It's so nice to hear Bugbear is moving forward, though -- the technology is there, and I'm curious to see where the studio takes it.
Don a Dtoid shirt and gun in Crytek's The Collectables! Posted: 30 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST Our friends at Crytek are currently accepting pre-registrations for their upcoming iOS and Android shooter The Collectables, and they've created an exclusive in-game shirt and gun just for the Dtoid community! By heading over to thecollectablesgame.com and registering your email and the code "Destructoid", you'll be notified once the game is released and be rewarded with a sexy in-game shirt with the Dtoid logo on it and an exclusive XM8 assault rifle to use on the battlefield. Sweet! You can see pics of both in the screenshots below. Have fun!
Tropico 5 is also coming to PlayStation 4 this year Posted: 30 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST Joining the previously-announced Windows, Mac, Linux, and Xbox 360 releases of Haemimont Studios' Tropico 5 is a PlayStation 4 version of the simulation game. Kalypso still won't give us a release date, but the publisher did say the PS4 port would make good use of the DualShock 4 and its feature set. I have to imagine that means full TouchPad support. The Tropico series is one I have somehow managed to avoid playing despite having it on good authority that I'd love its unique brand of city building. Tropico 5 spans the 19th century to the 21st and introduces both cooperative and competitive mulitplayer for up to four people.
| Archie Comics teases more Mega Man X goodness Posted: 30 Jan 2014 08:45 AM PST Late last year, it was announced that Archie Comics would be tackling the Mega Man X series in a two issue "backup" storyline that ran concurrent with their Mega Man Classic comic franchise. But Archie always noted that with fan demand, there could be more Mega Man X related happenings in the future. Curiously, they've just teased a new potential continuation, with Mega Man X looking into a pit that has what appears to be the original Mega Man's helmet. Dr. Cain and Sigma are also shown in the background, and the tagline "two heroes, two eras, one chance to save the future," is part of the image. A spring 2014 date is listed. I'm currently reaching out to Archie now to get to the bottom of what this may be, but we may very well be looking at more Mega Man X comics, and I'm perfectly okay with that. | Humble Weekly Sale bundles Overlord and DiRT Posted: 30 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST Codemasters is the latest publisher to participate in a Humble Weekly Sale and it's another one worth recommending if for no other reason than Overlord (and DiRT!). Name your price for the first Overlord and its Raising Hell DLC, Operation Flashpoint: Red River and Dragon Rising, and Rise of the Argonauts, with proceeds able to go to the UK-based charity SpecialEffect. Paying $6 or more for the bundle will also get you Overlord II, DiRT Showdown, and DiRT 3. While I've always preferred Little King's Story as my go-to alternative to Pikmin, the Overlord series isn't far behind with its dark sense of humor. And there's no such thing as too much of these games. |
Check out the 10 games in this Vita indie game bundle Posted: 30 Jan 2014 08:15 AM PST I've made no secret of my desire to buy a PS Vita soon, mainly as it's one of the cheaper platforms out there. Getting a bunch of games included with your console is always a draw and this upcoming Vita Indie Games Mega Pack is definitely appealing. There's some great games from the last few years included, like Hotline Miami, Thomas Was Alone, and Limbo. The bundle is going to retail for €24.99 which includes a 4GB memory card and a voucher to download the included titles. Of course, there's some games I'm not especially interested in playing like Coconut Dodge and Floating Cloud God Saves The Pilgrims in HD (actually, that last one does sound kinda cool) and to be honest I've already played a lot of the big titles in that bundle. Maybe if a couple of games were swapped out for titles like Spelunky, Frobisher Says, and Soundshapes I'd be more inclined to buy. Still if you fancy it, the bundle will be out in February along with a €199.99 option that includes a Vita with all 10 games. PS Vita Indie Game Mega Pack arrives next month [PlayStation Blog]
Nosgoth is not a very good Legacy of Kain game Posted: 30 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST The vampire Kain has been running around causing havoc since 1996, when he debuted in his first game on the original PlayStation. He was joined by his partner in crime and former lieutenant Raziel in 1999, and the rest was history. Since then, the Legacy of Kain franchise has been building lore and accumulating fans, mostly due to its dark charm and solid set of games. But a true continuation hasn't happened since Defiance in 2003, so we're all waiting to see what the newly announced Nosgoth can do. Sadly, it doesn't really seem add to the franchise in any noticeable way, but it's not a bad way to spend your time if you enjoy third-person shooters.
| Videogame Clubhouse: We're giving away Octodad! Posted: 30 Jan 2014 07:45 AM PST I'm not going to get fancy with this post: Octodad is better than pretty much every game launched in the past year. In the hour I spent with the game last night I had more fun than I had in recent memory. Naturally, we're ending our indie month with a co-op session of Octodad: Dadliest Catch giveaway of game. | There's a new, free-to-play Dungeon Keeper for mobile Posted: 30 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST For years I've been searching for a modern Dungeon Keeper-esque game but nothing has been able to hit all of the right notes for me. Maybe that's nostalgia speaking. From the look of it, not even a game literally called "Dungeon Keeper" will do the job. Developed by EA Mythic, this is a free-to-play title available now for Android and iOS. The more I look at it, the less faithful to the original Bullfrog games it appears to be. The increased focus on social and in-app purchases are one thing, but this new Dungeon Keeper just seems like a standard tower defense title geared toward mobile platforms more than anything. Guess I'll just stick with the classics on GOG.com. |
PSA: Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary is back on the eShop Posted: 30 Jan 2014 07:15 AM PST A few years back, Nintendo held a pretty awesome promotion -- for a limited time, you could grab The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition absolutely free on the Nintendo 3DS. For those of you who haven't heard of it, it's a fully fledged game that allowed up to four people to go at it on a quest against Link's nemesis Vaati. But there's one major addition to this newly minted Anniversary DSi version, which is a rework from the original on the GBA -- you can beat the game by yourself, which wasn't previously possible. Now, Nintendo is running a new promotion where you can grab the game for free over the course of the next few days. Sadly, this offer seems to only be for North Americans at this time, and DSi portables won't work -- you'll need a 3DS to access the eShop. Either way, go grab it! If you need further convincing you can check out my thoughts here, but really, this one is a no-brainer.
Posted: 30 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST When Wonder Momo was first released in arcades and the Turbo Grafx 16, no one in the United States knew what "Magical Girl Anime" was. Game publishers were still changing women into men on a regular basis for "marketing reasons". It was not a good time to be Wonder Momo. Thankfully, times have changed. The Year of Luigi is over. We have officially entered the year of Momo. Bandai Namco brought the character back in recent years with their Shifty Look comic series, but that's nothing compared to what they have planned for 2014. They've got a Wonder Momo CD, anime, and game all in the works for release this year. The game comes from WayForward, more specifically, WayForward's James Montanga. I've been lucky to have a few conversations with James over the years, so I can tell you that he's the perfect person for the job. If he weren't being paid to make the Wonder Momo game, I bet he'd do it for free (like he did with Hyper Gal + Ghost). His enthusiasm for whimsy, light-hearted but blazing action, and charming super heroines is unprecedented. With the right resources, I'm sure he can make a game that will put Momo on the map.
QuakeCon 2014 dates set for July 17 - 20 Posted: 30 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST One of the year's great LAN parties returns to Dallas earlier than normal. ZeniMax has confirmed QuakeCon 2014 will take place from Thursday, July 17 - Sunday, July 20 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. As a result of the date change, room reservations are available now. As always, attendance is free and open to the public, and Bethesda will bring its upcoming games to the event. Will John Carmack return for a keynote now that he's moved on from id Software? One can only hope. Hard to believe this will be QuakeCon's 19th year.
Enemy Front is a fresh approach to World War II shooters Posted: 30 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST Back in 2011 City Interactive announced Enemy Front, a World War II shooter that was being worked on by Stuart Black who was the guy responsible for Black. It's funny how over-hyped that game was looking back. Anyway, Black left at some point in 2012 and since then Enemy Front was completely reworked. It's still a World War II shooter, but instead of just being another colorless run-and-gun shooter like Call of Duty, the developers at CI have taken more of a fresh approach to the genre that made me think of it as a nice cross between Bad Company and Far Cry 3 during my hands-on time.
Here's what to expect from the Wii U's quick start menu Posted: 30 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST One of the announcements included in Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata's corporate management policy briefing was an update planned for Wii U this summer which will allow players to get to their games more quickly through the use of a new quick start menu that features recently-played titles. Nintendo wasn't ready to show a real-life demo, but here's what it'll look like. "We think that this function will make you feel that the time to start up a Wii U software title is cut by more than 50 percent, and that it will also lead to more Wii U users understanding the appealing nature of the GamePad," Iwata said. I tend to play Wii U games on a television screen when given the choice, but I know a number of you have professed your love of the system's Off-TV Play feature. Certainly a worthwhile update.
Nintendo Download: Zelda: A Link to the Past Posted: 30 Jan 2014 05:15 AM PST Today is a bit more lively than last week's Nintendo Download, as The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is hitting the Wii U. This is my favorite Zelda of all time, and I've played every single game. The Wii U eShop is also getting Wii Fit U in the form of a $29.99 download on February 1st. There's also a few sales going on, involving Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams ($5.99), Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition ($3.99), Runner 2 ($6), Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party ($3.60), and Toki Tori 2+ ($5.99) On the 3DS side, we have Castle Clout 3D, Arc Style: Solitaire, Touch Battle Tank 3D 2, and Mario Bros. (like, the original arcade game). Ohno Odyssey is also on sale for $3.99.
All the Octodad: Dadliest Catch ties and their locations Posted: 30 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST Octodad: Dadliest Catch is a pretty great game for those who take the time to re-learn how to walk. One of the neat extra features are hidden neckties throughout the game. In each level (except for "Shark Naked"), three ties can be found, and once found, Octodad will proudly add the ties to his collection, making them available to wear. This walkthrough details how to find all 33 ties in the game, including how to gain entry to a secret level. This may be considered full of spoilers for those who would rather find everything without help. If you are one of those people, stop reading now. If you need some help with finding a tie or two, then read on.
PS Vita Slim launches in the UK next week Posted: 30 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST Sony has announced the PlayStation Vita Slim for the UK following the model's release in Japan last year. This thinner, lighter system will be available in black on February 7 for £180, which is a higher price than some of us were anticipating considering the move away from the original PS Vita's OLED screen to a less-desirable LCD display. And no extra colors? Darn. There's still no specifics on a launch in the US, but if the pricing is consistent with what's been announced here, I'm not interested. I figured it would be on par with the current line, not more expensive. If anything, this puts pressure on me to get the non-Slim model before those go away.
Review: Octodad: Dadliest Catch Posted: 30 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST An interesting exercise in game design is to identify assumptions about the genre or medium in general, then question those assumptions. One such assumption that most make is that control should feel natural and unobtrusive as the player's interface with the game. Octodad: Dadliest Catch challenges that idea, making awkward control central to the gameplay. While the tasks in Octodad would be mundane in almost any other setting with a typical control scheme, they can be challenging or thought-provoking to an octopus dressed up as a human. By requiring a certain amount of care and effort, things like mowing the lawn or visiting the grocery store are made fun, though they can dip into the realm of frustration at times.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has new content for the West Posted: 30 Jan 2014 03:10 AM PST Last year saw the release of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle in the Japan. The game went on to become a popular seller, and has since retained loyal following. With a quirky and lively art style, along with a pretty dense combat system, fans in the West have been itching for a chance to get their copy of the game. Thankfully, Namco Bandai plans to bring this bizarre, for lack of a better word, fighter to fans later in Spring 2014. And to make up for the wait, western fans will have the first crack at new content.
Posted: 30 Jan 2014 03:05 AM PST As one of the most celebrated and admired games of the last generation, the Souls series from the developers at From Software has many admirers and critics. Many swear by its uncompromising and hardcore gameplay systems and design, while others view it as unfair and unnecessarily difficult. Regardless, it's safe to say that the series, particularly Dark Souls, has garnered a lot of attention for the once niche developer.
Lords of the Fallen won't be a walk in the park Posted: 30 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST A couple of weeks ago I wrote up this little story asking for City Interactive to show us some real gameplay footage of Lords of the Fallen. Well, there's still no footage but at the very least I got to see the game in action earlier this week in person and boy was I impressed. Visually the game looks like it's truly taking advantage of the new gaming hardware. In fact the screenshots don't do the game justice. From the character designs, to the levels that you'll be traversing in a similar style to the Zelda series, it all has a ton of detail that brings this medieval fantasy to life. What I'm really looking forward to is the combat. The action-RPG is more strategy rather than a hack-and-slash, and you really have to experiment with each fight to see what works. Going in blindly swinging will just get your ass kicked, especially against the bosses that can take you out in one hit sometimes. That should tell you something especially considering that most fights will typically be one-on-one battles. "We wanted to try to make it feel as if Tekken or Street Fighter was imbued inside every one-on-one [fight]," executive producer Tomasz Gop told us. That said it's not trying to be a completely hardcore game as there will be a lot of tools to help you experiment and not get totally frustrated. "I think it's a tactical kind of game," Tomasz commented. "Very advanced in terms of combat, but at the same time we're trying to make sure that it's not a treadmill kind of experience." Most of what I saw was pretty much covered by Destructoid in the past if you want to learn a little more about the combat system and character customization. I do want to give you a deeper dive, but not until we get some actual hands-on time. Otherwise, Lords of the Fallen will be out this Fall for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
Your doctor might recommend Octodad: Dadliest Catch Posted: 30 Jan 2014 02:45 AM PST The strange octopus-dressed-as-a-human simulator Octodad: Dadliest Catch releases today on Steam, the Humble Store, and GOG.com, but how do you know if Octodad: Dadliest Catch is right for you? The informative medical video above, produced by Action Button Entertainment, could shed some light on the issues you may face with your aging, cephalopod body. If you are still not sure whether Octodad is suitable for your condition, keep an eye on Destructoid for our Dadliest Catch review later today.
LocoCyle heading to Steam and the 360 on Valentine's Day Posted: 30 Jan 2014 02:30 AM PST LocoCycle is a pretty flawed game, but if you're looking for a bit of silly fun it can deliver on a rainy afternoon. Previously it was an Xbox One timed exclusive, but now developer Twisted Pixel has announced that it will be coming to the Xbox 360 and Steam on February 14th, 2014. It's a pretty sudden announcement, as the PC version was a secret project and not known before this week -- it would be a great candidate for a cheap Steam Sale. Twisted Pixel is also running a giveaway for a custom Xbox 360 or Xbox One, if you're interested. LocoCyle update [Twisted Pixel]
The newest batch of PlayStation Plus freebies is amazing Posted: 30 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST Not happy with a free copy of BioShock Infinite a couple weeks back? Well, Sony is showing PlayStation Plus users the love come February with a showing more engorged than usual. Spooky horror game Outlast is free on the PS4 side of things, keeping with the trend of the best PS4 games being ones you don't even have to pay for. Some excellent under the radar games from last year are coming to PS3 in the form of Metro: Last Light, Remember Me, and Payday 2. The first two are some neat, different games -- great choices if you missed them amongst the bigger releases. Payday 2 is also quite fabulous and hopefully an injection of new people playing the freebie will pump up the multiplayer element. Lastly, Vita owners get Street Fighter X Tekken and ModNation Racers: Road Trip. I'll give the former a whirl, at least. Damn fine haul overall.
Charging wildly into War of the Vikings Posted: 30 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST War of the Vikings, the close-quarters Vikings-versus-Saxons bloodbath, is in Early Access on Steam. Yesterday, it saw its biggest patch leading up to its early March release window. With it comes the content I got to test out last week. To go along with the murder, there is now a persistent progression system (which will be reset at launch) and character customization, so everyone can fear the beard, or know of your reckoning by the brand on your bright pink shield. It's fun as hell. I didn't want to stop playing it. I'd like to be playing it right now.
Souped up hexagons: Ready to lose hours to Warlock II Posted: 30 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST A couple years back, Destructoid's handsomely verbose Fraser Brown reviewed a strategy game of his ilk that didn't instantly fill me with dread and and remind me of my general inadequacy. Warlock: Master of the Arcane was ostensibly a 4X game, but with a much greater focus on straight up, scorched earth warfare and colorfully cliche fantasy characters, versus Civilization V's equally hexagonal historical pretension. "I could play this," I thought. I never did, because initiative is beyond me. But now I've had a chance to play Warlock II: The Exiled. "I could play this more," I thought. It is really is quite a bit of fun.
White Xbox One coming this year, update coming this March Posted: 29 Jan 2014 10:00 PM PST I don't want an Xbox One, but if I did, I'd want One in white. An anonymous NeoGAF poster let loose a flood of leaks, including word that October would see a white Xbox One bundled with Insomniac's Sunset Overdrive. A 1TB console is rumored to follow in November. The Verge was able to confirm that Microsoft is at least releasing its white Xbox One sometime this year. The same poster also spoke about a major dashboard update for the console come March, which The Verge was also able to separately verify. Wondering what else the leaker was in the know about? Well, The Verge confirmed Microsoft has tested a blu-ray-drive-free version of the console, though we don't know if it will see market (presumably in an attempt to shave costs). If the NeoGAF source can further be believed based on this corroboration, expect Crackdown 3 in 2016, another Forza Horizon this year, Quantum Break at the end of this year, Halo Anniversary 2, and a whole lot more. We'll see how many more of these leaks get corroborated or maybe even officially confirmed in the coming weeks and months. Xbox One update arriving in March, white console later this year [The Verge]
