Nightmares about being a man inspired The Castle Doctrine Posted: 29 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST A week and a half ago on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we were lucky to snag Jason Rohrer (Primrose, Sleep is Death, Inside a Star-filled Sky) on the cusp of the release of his latest game, The Castle Doctrine (out now, 25% off for a limited time). We talked about what it's been like to live in "the pixelated shadow" or Passage (the game that first put him on the map), the process of putting out Diamond Trust of London (the world's first fan funded DS game), his file sharing software Mute (downloaded over one million times as of 2008), the urge to create a game that equals the incredible experience of having a real conversation, what motivated him to make a game about feeling awful and being awful (my words, not Jason's), and a lot more. The Castle Doctrine was born of contemplating society's expectations, masculinity, physical vulnerability and how being threatened changes us. In a lot of ways, it's the perfect game for this age of internet flame wars -- where millions of people people take to their online portal of choice everyday to defend their own metaphorical "castles" (their identified gender group, political party, favorite videogame console, ect) while working hard to tear down the "castles" of others. It's something most of us have done at some point or another, even though we may not like that about ourselves. Thanks again to Jason for joining us on the show, and come back this Sunday at 1pm PST/4pm EST when we welcome Cardboard Computer (Kentucky Route Zero) to the program. It's going to be thugnificent.
| Iwata plans for the Wii U and 3DS to be 'like brothers' Posted: 29 Jan 2014 01:34 PM PST After wrapping up his press conference on how to overcome Nintendo's current financial disappointments, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata took questions from the press. When an analyst asked why Nintendo revamped it's organizational structure to include both consoles and handhelds, Iwata responded that there is no longer the same huge technological gap between home consoles and handhelds, in part because handhelds ran on batteries. Iwata went on to state that he's not sure if future Nintendo handhelds and home consoles will be merged completely, but that going forward, he wants the two to be "more like brothers." To me, that means giving us the option to play online against 3DS players on the Wii U in games like Super Smash Bros. 4. Many of you are probably thinking that it should also mean a universal OS for all Nintendo consoles, and cross-buy between Wii U and 3DS Virtual Console releases. It will be interesting to see if these kinds of moves would help transfer some of the 3DS's success over to the Wii U. Would you 3DS owners be more likely to get a Wii U if you knew you could bring your 3DS Virtual Console games to the big screen, and play online with your 3DS friends using your home console? | Mario Kart 8 coming in May 2014 Posted: 29 Jan 2014 12:49 PM PST Nintendo President Satoru Iwata just dropped a load of information to reassure shareholders that he had a plan to save the company from ruin. A lot of his ideas are really interesting. One of them was not. Mario Kart 8 is being released in May, guys. Not a particularly mind-blowing reveal, but it's important news all the same. It makes sense that Nintendo would throw a little game talk into their otherwise OS/Smartphone/Infrastructure/Online Storefront focused presentation, as games is the one place where Nintendo always manages to pull in money. While the Wii U hasn't sold a ton yet, it does have a pretty impressive attach rate, with Super Mario 3D World, Wii U Party, and Wind Waker HD all selling over a million units with less than a year on the market. That means that on average, about one of six Wii U owners bought those three titles. Nintendo is surely hoping to keep that software momentum going with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in February and then Mario Kart 8 a few months later. We already knew that Mario Kart 8 will get a simultaneous global release (like Pokemon X/Y), which will help consolidate marking power and make for a nice selling point right out of the game. Knowing that I can play against strangers in France on day one is pretty neat. Will the game go on to sell 24+ million units like Mario Kart Wii did? It will be fun to find out! |
Wii U Virtual Console will be getting DS games soon Posted: 29 Jan 2014 12:29 PM PST Nintendo President Satoru Iwata gave a presentation detailing what they're doing to turnaround the company's poor performance. On top of the stuff we detailed here, it was also revealed that the Wii U will be seeing Nintendo DS games appearing on the Virtual Console. A slide on this page gives one example of what DS a game like Brain Age will look like on the Wii U GamePad. About time. We'll share more on what to expect from this as soon as we hear anything.
Nintendo details plan to turn around Wii U sales Posted: 29 Jan 2014 12:10 PM PST Nintendo released their third quarter financial results which revealed an operating loss of over $15 million due to poor Wii U sales. While it wasn't totally bleak in sales in some regards, the company overall failed to meet revised sales projections thus causing Nintendo president Satoru Iwata to cut his salary in half. So now what? Iwata just held a press conference in Japan tonight and detailed what his plan of attack is to turn the company around. For starters, Iwata stated that they won't be abandoning its hardware business, and game consoles will continue being the center of their strategy. That said, he admitted that adapting to change is necessary. A revamp to their marketing is coming, with a big focus on the GamePad and it's capabilities, such as pushing the NFC function (tech similar to what Skylanders/Disney Infinity does). He admitted that the Wii U's weakness is the GamePad in that the recognition is low, and that people think it's an accessory for the Wii. Turning this around is the company's highest priority, such as how they'll be revealing new NFC titles at E3. They won't be cutting the price, however. We can also expect high-speed startups, so for instance you can instantly dive into games through the GamePad as your TV is powering up.
Posted: 29 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST Remember Glorkbot's Mini Adventure, that promising looking Galaga/Sonic/Metroid mash-up from forever ago? That game was actually just a teaser for Glorkian Warrior: The Trials of Glork -- a fully hand-drawn, animated action shooter set to hit iOS any day now. Glorkbot and Glorkian Warrior are the result of a long, toiling collaboration between James Kochalka and PixelJam Games. As a huge fan of both of those creative entities, I'm pleased as punch to see the fruits of their labors finally come to light. Some Fancy Froglin DLC would be the icing on the cake. Make it happen, American Elf!
A familiar look at Dark Souls II while we count the days Posted: 29 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST PlayStation Access has about 12 minutes of Dark Souls II footage as played by some lucky soul at Namco Bandai and, thing is, it doesn't really cover new ground. It's the same shadowy underground areas lit up by torches, the same Mirror Knight encounter, the same "YOU DIED" -- but I personally can't get enough of this stuff, "new" or otherwise. That huge sword just wasn't working out, was it? I've always been a halberd man, myself.
Here's some Google Glass videogame prototypes Posted: 29 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST After a flurry of excitement last year, you don't hear that much about Google Glass these days, aside from people getting into various types of trouble with the law. So it's no surprise to me to see a demonstration of some simple games that have been created to use Google's wearable eyepiece. Still, you're not going to find me shouting "pull, bang!" in public. At least not until Google send me a kit to try out (hint hint). There are five prototypes available, from what appears to be simple balancing game to a skeet shooting option. The titles that are available seem to have been designed to specifically work with the hardware, so for instance the Balance game is controlled by the player simply tilting their head. These titles look graphically simple but you'd have to make whatever playing stand out from the scenery. It'll be interesting to see if videogames become a selling point for Google Glass whenever the tech goes on sale, if it ever does.
Posted: 29 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] To say that I am a huge fan of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas would be a severe understatement. However, as much as I absolutely adore those two titles, I've always wanted to see the series return to its glorious isometric roots. Well, as luck would have it, I may just see that wish come true in the form of a sequel to the game that started it all, Wasteland. Tonight on Mash Tactics, we'll be checking out the first few hours of Wasteland 2, and seeing if it can live up to the extreme expectations that fans of the original games have no doubt set. While it may be far to early to judge, as the game is still in its early access stages, we should be able to get a rough idea of how it's shaping up, and what it's planning to bring to the table. Come check it out with us this evening, as I run in blind and see what all the hype is about at Dtoid.TV! QotD: What other games would you like to see "go back to their roots" so to speak?
Pokémon X/Y Beta Competition set for next month Posted: 29 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST The first Pokémon Global Link tournament to allow Pokémon from the Kalos region happens next month, on Thursday, February 20 at 4:00pm Pacific. Registration details for this Beta Competition will be available at the Pokémon Global Link beginning January 31 but in the mean time, you'll want to register your copy of Pokémon X or Y with the PGL. According to the announcement, some players are already qualified for the the tournament based on their performance in the Global Showdown. I've always been into Pokémon for the catch-'em-all aspect and never the competitive scene, but that's not to say I'm disinterested in seeing how players make use of the new generation. Quite the opposite. The Pokémon X and Pokémon Y beta competition begins soon [Pokémon]
Everyone has a weakness: Wolf Among Us episode 2 trailer Posted: 29 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST Mine is that I work too hard. If you had any faith that things wouldn't continue to be just awful after the first episode of The Wolf Among Us, why? Things are clearly awful. Things will undoubtedly get more awful. It's the way of the world -- especially neo-noir gritty fairytale worlds. The somewhat tardy episode 2 is 'coming soon.' That's not soon enough.
So how about that topical section in Bravely Default? Posted: 29 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST Bravely Default is on its way to North America really soon, and it's glorious. As a return to the JRPGs of yore and a modern update, it should simultaneously satisfy pretty much every RPG fan out there. But I noticed in the comment section of Dale's review, that many people who had already played the European or Japanese version of the game were speaking out about one story choice in particular. Since so many people are confused as to what that controversial tonal shift is, I figured I'd spell it out completely, so that people knew what they were getting into with Bravely Default. While I will be discussing an event that takes place in Chapter 5 (which could be considered spoiler territory), please note that I won't ruin any character specific stories, or endgame story revelations.
Kerbal Space Program is teaming up with NASA Posted: 29 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST The makers behind Kerbal Space Program are teaming up with NASA to create an educational version of their popular rocket-building sim. I say "rocket-building sim" when KSP is more of a "build a cool rocket and watch it crash in spectacular fashion" sim. With the aid of Teacher Gaming LLC, the team behind KSP is going to make an educational version of the game to promote engineering and science. Oh, and NASA's 2025 mission to land astronauts on an asteroid. That will be the goal of a new mission pack that is in development in association with the agency which will challenge KSP players to the limit. What's put me off the base game (and a lot of Steam Early Access titles) is the seeming lack of any goal apart from the ones you make yourself. With clear missions and set goals, that might offset my wariness. What's really interesting about Charlie Hall's feature on Polygon is finding out that Squad isn't even a traditional developer -- it's a Mexico City-based marketing company. Lead developer Felipe Falanghe had grown frustrated working on marketing projects and had threatened to quit. However he was given time instead to work on a prototype of Kerbal Space Program and the rest is history. To The Mun And Back: Kerbal Space Program [Polygon]
Treasure has plans for more ports to Steam and a new game Posted: 29 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST Ikaruga coming to Steam by way of Steam Greenlight was an unusual sight to behold but if that's weirdly what it takes to get Treasure games on the platform, I'm all for it. In an interview with Famitsu, Treasure president Masato Maegawa said there's indeed plans to port more titles to PC. "Ikaruga is the first one, and we don't intend on stopping there," he told the publication. "There are some players who say 'How about Radiant Silvergun?' but we also don't intend to only do ports. We're thinking of making a new original title for the platform, Steam." Chief director Atsutomo Nakagawa commented that "A side-scroller action game might be pretty good..." to which Maegawa responded "Hey! We haven't decided on anything, yet!" 『斑鳩』がSteamで近日配信 なぜいまSteamなのかをトレジャーに直撃 [Famitsu via Siliconera]
New Gears of War is just a week into development Posted: 29 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST Microsoft has acquired the rights to Gears of War from Epic Games and tasked Black Tusk Studios with development of the next installment. The time frame of this deal hasn't been made clear, leaving lots of room for speculation about when the next game might conceivably release. Responding to a question on Twitter, Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer said "[The Black Tusk] leadership team has been involved for a month but [the] studio has only been on Gears for a week." Which means we're still years off. I guess I should have expected that, but I didn't for whatever reason. Not like I have an Xbox One yet, anyway.
Get caught up on Lightning's story with this 16-bit recap Posted: 29 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST With Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII releasing next month, players may need to get (re)acquainted with the (perhaps convoluted) story thus far. Square Enix took up this task, and produced a brilliant video to recapitulate the events from the last two games of the FFXIII trilogy. Hours upon hours of talking about Cocoon have been condensed into the eight-minute video, but the real draw is that the entire game has been retro-fitted to look and sound like a Final Fantasy title from the 16-bit era. Even those former Final Fantasy fans who have no interest in what the series is today can find a little bit of joy seeing Lightning and friends as 2D sprites, saving the world from the flashes, buzzes, and pops that the old hardware produced. [Thanks, Albert!]
Review: Call of Duty: Ghosts: Onslaught Posted: 29 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST Call of Duty: Ghosts is one of the most disappointing games in the series' history. Although I didn't dislike it as much as Jim did, there's certainly something missing that made past games in the franchise appealing, and it's not just because the formula is getting stale. The campaign was a bore, multiplayer didn't really bring much to the table, and worst of all, the highly anticipated "Extinction" mode was grossly underutilized. While the new map pack doesn't fundamentally fix the core problems of Ghosts, it does make it a little more interesting as a whole.
Hardline Live: What should Nintendo's next move be? Posted: 29 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST Okay, so there is some news worth talking about this week for Hardline. But I think I speak for Steven and Conrad when I say we'd love to take questions from you as much as possible for this episode and see where that takes us. We're going live on Twitch.tv starting at 11:15am Pacific should you want to participate in what will inevitably be a weird conversation. If you're strictly in it for the news talk, however, here's what I've got. Microsoft acquired the Gears of War property, the baby-making RPG Conception 2 is fun to talk about (but maybe less fun to play?), Nintendo says it won't make minigames for smartphones, Steam is getting a bit better about offering refunds, another EVE Online war broke out, and it sounds as if PS1/PS2 games will be playable on PS4 via PlayStation Network download.
| Iwata to halve salary after Nintendo's poor performance Posted: 29 Jan 2014 03:45 AM PST While Nintendo struggles financially, its higher-ups aren't content to sit back and keep collecting a paycheck. Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata told reporters today that he would cut his salary in half for five months as an atonement of sorts for the company's recent 8.1 percent dip in revenue, 30 percent decline in profits, and an operating loss of more than $15 million. Iwata isn't the only Nintendo executive taking it on the chin. Other board members are reportedly taking a 20 to 30 percent reduction in their paychecks. When asked if it were possible that the paycut would last beyond June, Iwata responded "I will make a decision after looking at the management situation at that time." Although Nintendo's management recognizes that something needs to change, no one should expect it to happen overnight. Nintendo predicts that it will operate at a loss for the third consecutive year. Even though software sales have increased 19 percent, the Wii U continues to struggle as its sales have dropped 36 percent compared to the same time last year, and the company adjusted its projected units shipped from 9 million to 2.8 million. | Pay extra to play as an Imperial in TES Online Posted: 29 Jan 2014 03:30 AM PST Bethesda has announced The Elder Scrolls Online Imperial Edition, available in a physical form ($99.99) or digitally ($79.99). It contains the typical bonuses one would expect of an Elder Scrolls collector's edition, but then you get to the line about its "exclusive collection of digital content," which so happens to include the Imperial race. That's disappointing. The other digital bonuses are a white Imperial horse, a Mudcrab vanity pet (obviously the other big draw here), and the experience-boosting Rings of Mara. The physical edition is more expensive because it comes with a 12" Molag Bal statue, a 224-page illustrated guide to Tamriel, a map, and that Steelbook packaging videogames seem to adore. Don't tell Hamza, but I didn't even watch that cinematic. |
Star Trek Online's anniversary adds Tuvok, transformers Posted: 29 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST Believe it or not, Star Trek Online's been around for four whole years now, and on January 30th, they're opening their 4-Year Anniversary event to celebrate. To get players old and new hyped for that, the developers at Cryptic have set phasers to "Infodump". The party starts with a literal party, hosted by the omnipotent being (and convenient source of MMO silliness) Q, where you'll play minigames and take on daily missions for free loot and tokens to trade in towards the grand prize, a free "Dyson Science Destroyer". That kind of name sounds like a ship that burns textbooks about evolution, but it's actually a ship that can transform between two modes with different play styles and powers. More narrative-focused players can also undertake a new story quest, titled "A Step Between Stars", which features voiceover work by actor Tim Russ, reprising his role as Tuvok from Star Trek: Voyager. That episode also rewards tokens towards the Destroyer. In keeping with the Delta Quadrant focus of recent updates, Cryptic have also debuted a new random-loot lockbox containing prizes that include playable ships used by the Hirogen hunters, hostile aliens from Voyager best known for becoming Nazi sympathizers and having faces that look like your fingers after you've spent too long in the bathtub. Lastly, players who log in to the game using Perfect World's ARC program (a Steam/Uplay-like store/launcher) will net a free bare-chested outfit modeled after Khan - the original Kahn from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, played by Ricardo Montalban's pecs. That's a lot of stuff they're handing out, and if you're interested in getting your free-to-play Trek on, there are more details at the official site. Season 8 Dev Blog #45 [Star Trek Online]
ReVeN is the next 2D Metroid-inspired game to watch Posted: 29 Jan 2014 02:30 AM PST Since Nintendo seems dead set on never giving us another proper 2D Metroid game, it is up to the indie community to pull up the slack. Ghost Song, a game heavily inspired by old school Metroid titles, and Paradise Lost, a gorgeous pixelated stealth Metroidvania, both enjoyed pretty immense crowdfunding success on Kickstarter last year. A few days into its own campaign, ReVeN looks like it might just do the same. To be fair, whether ReVeN will employ classic Metroidvania exploration and backtracking is unclear from the video, but what is clear is that the team takes a lot of inspiration from the legendary Nintendo franchise. The developer is named Varia Games, after all. After about a week of its campaign, ReVeN has earned more than two-thirds of its funding goal of $18,000 on Kickstarter. Additionally, it is up for voting on Steam Greenlight. Are you paying attention to this, Nintendo? People want another 2D Metroid game so badly that they are now making their own, and those games are becoming fairly successful.
The Witch and The Hundred Knight has a dog girl Posted: 29 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST I guess it's going to be a slow trickle of short gameplay snippets for NIS' The Witch and the Hundred Knight leading up to the PS3 RPG's March 21/25 (Europe/North America) release. Hmm, butting up pretty closely against Titanfall, innit? This is definitely flying under the radar, but it could be quite good. I've yet to be able to wrap my head around the action oriented battle system, but that alone is an interesting turn from NIS' typical SRPG gameplay. Plus, there are witches, dog girls, and buxom giant monster ladies.
You must watch this Elder Scrolls Online video right now Posted: 29 Jan 2014 01:18 AM PST Yes, it's a cinematic, but it's one hell of an impressive cinematic. Fan or not, you can't help but get excited for The Elder Scrolls Online after watching this eight minute long movie. Makes you really wish for an actual Elder Scrolls animated movie like this. At the very least, we may be getting more short movies like this based on how this one ends. The Elder Scrolls Online will be out on April 4 for Windows and OS X, and in June for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
| Guns, gangster rap, & Venus: Buy Gun Godz standalone Posted: 29 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST Vlambeer (Super Crate Box, Ridiculous Fishing) created Gun Godz -- yes, with a "z" -- as part of the Venus Patrol website Kickstarter a couple of years back. Now, you can buy it standalone for whatever price you feel is appropriate, straight from Vlambeer.
If the description somehow doesn't sell you, maybe Patrick Hancock's old hands on account of its righteousness will. |
Time, well, spent: World of Warcraft crosses 100M users Posted: 28 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST Blizzard's World of Warcraft just crossed 100 million lifetime players. Wow. Let that sink in for a moment. We've had less than 100 million people turn out to vote for the United States presidency. Maybe political candidates should start campaigning in game. There have also been over 500 million created characters, about 40% more than the United States population. A bunch of other curated stats meant to try and explain just how big World of Warcraft is can be found here, in lovely infographic form. World of Warcraft also has 408,000 followers on Twitter, which is way more than me. I'll get there one day.
Star Wars: Assault Team is a turn-based mobile game Posted: 28 Jan 2014 10:00 PM PST Disney Interactive and LucasArts have announced Star Wars: Assault Team for iOS, Windows 8, and Android. It's a turn-based combat game involving card-battling elements. You'll collect characters from the Star Wars universe and use them to defeat enemies. Missions will take you throughout planets and locations from the original trilogy as well. Assault Team is currently out in select international markets and will be released globally this spring. Yes, I know, you're so excited. Shake your head all you want, but card battling games are all the rage on mobile devices.
Taylor Swift just might be the ultimate Street Fighter Posted: 28 Jan 2014 09:00 PM PST Ryu's made an illustrious career out of kicking people in the head, but there's a certain pop star that certainly doesn't have a glass jaw. Despite taking seven blows to the chops, Taylor Swift bounces right back like she wasn't even fazed. Remember: these kicks come from a dude that breaks piles of bricks and old cars in his spare time. Taylor's as pro as it gets.
Put away your Pokeflute and go to sleep on a Snorlax Posted: 28 Jan 2014 08:00 PM PST You want a pillow-sized Snorlax plush, right? Our friends at Tomopop have spotted a large Snorlax plush that comes out this June and can easily replace your plain, dingy old pillow. It reminds me a bit of the two or three foot tall Charmander I picked up in Chinatown around the time of Pokemon Red and Blue. Or that amazing, giant Totoro bed. Crawling onto Totoro's stomach every night might just make life bearable. Too bad it's hundreds of dollars. You gotta catch this Pokemon Snorlax cushion [Tomopop]
Curve's four game PlayStation bundle is a great deal Posted: 28 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST Looking for something to play on your PS3 or Vita? Maybe both? Curve Studios is bundling four good games at the budget price of $15. $13.49 for PlayStation Plus members. All four games are Cross Buy as well, meaning you get access to the PS3 and Vita versions. Not bad. The four titles in question are Proteus, Thomas Was Alone, Lone Survivor, and Stealth Inc.
Kick peoples' butts at games during IndieCade East Posted: 28 Jan 2014 06:00 PM PST IndieCade is taking place in New York City from February 14 through February 16. It'll be a good chance to support some indies, and play their games. Titles like Laza Knitez, Particle Mace, Foiled, Stikbold, Gunsport, Nidhogg, and Videoball will all be on offer as part of the eSports lineup for folks to kick other folks butts in. Other games that you'll be able to play during the event include Crypt of the NecroDancer, Surround, Tehter, Zombie Ward, Soundself, and ART BOY Sin. If you're at all interested in attending you can purchase tickets now, which are discounted until January 31 for early bird purchases. Individual day passes will also be available if you can't afford to throw down that much.
Ken Kutaragi receiving Lifetime Achievement Award at GDC Posted: 28 Jan 2014 05:00 PM PST The "Father of PlayStation" Ken Kutaragi is set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to gaming during the Game Developers Choice Awards. The ceremony takes place on March 19 starting at 6:30PM Pacific. Hosting the awards for the first time will be Abbie Heppe, community manager over at Titanfall developer Respawn Games. Before the GDC Awards is the Independent Games Festival Awards, and this year Capybara Games president and co-founder Nathan Vella will be playing hosting duties there. Both awards shows will be streaming live online and we'll be sure to share them on Destructoid come March.
His hair is made of little faces Posted: 28 Jan 2014 04:00 PM PST Perhaps I get more joy out of bizarre glitches than most. I probably do. But I felt obligated to share what has got to be one of the more entertaining texture mess-ups out there and couldn't turn down the opportunity to write the sentence "His hair is made of little faces." Not going for it would've been a regret for the death bed if I've ever had one. This footage, taken from Mafia II running on a MacBook Air courtesy of reddit user EliZissou, does more to get me interested in the game than anything 2K has said.
