The Elder Scrolls Online Imperial Edition details leaked

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 03:30 PM PST

Whoops! Looks like Amazon screwed up. An Amazon user by the name of Char noticed that the Dishonored Game of the Year listing had an image of The Elder Scrolls collector's edition instead.

The Imperial Edition as it's called will include a collector's edition box and steelbook packaging, a Molag Bal 12" statue, map of Tamriel, and a 224-page illustrated guide book annotated by the Imperial scholar, Flaccus Terentius.

Other bonuses will include exclusive digital content, the ability to play as an Imperial in any alliance, a white Imperial horse, a Mudcrab vanity pet, and the Rings of Mara.

No word on price, but you know, safe to assume it'll be expensive as are most collector's editions.

Titanfall will see additional content post launch

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 02:30 PM PST

Electronic Arts held their investor call today where EA CEO Andrew Wilson told investors that Titanfall will see downloadable content after the game's release. Not entirely shocking this day and age, but I am intrigued by how Andrew framed it.

"We're planning extra content already for the product," Andrew stated, "but in the nature of the live service, I think that that will evolve over time as we see how the player base evolves through the year."

What that exactly could mean remains to be seen, but I surmise they're taking a different approach to the standard plan given how Titanfall's single-player and multiplayer is one in the same.

Volpin Props has another slick Soul Calibur IV replica

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST

I've been following the work of Volpin Props for years and haven't lost interest yet. The end result is frequently terrific, sure, but it's the step-by-step photos and explanations of the building process that keep me coming back for more time and time again.

Serving as a nice complement to Sophitia's Elk Shield from Soul Calibur IV, Volpin has replicated her Omega Sword. The finished set is shown above, but there are loads more pictures where that came from. I wish someone would give him his own show.

The Firemen 2 coming to PSOne Classics

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 01:30 PM PST

MonkeyPaw Games is continuing to release PlayStation games previously unavailable in North America through PlayStation Network and their next title, The Firemen 2: Pete and Danny, launched today. It is playable on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Portable, priced at $5.99.

Maybe the process of putting out fires will become monotonous (the trailer doesn't do a fantastic job of making that seem exciting), but I love the premise of firefighters working together in a cooperative game so much that I'm going to pick it up regardless. Totally smitten by this and wish I'd known of its existence when it first released nearly two decades ago.

Gears of Microsoft, Sly Cooper Movie, & Halo: The Series

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST

Microsoft buys Gears of War, and puts Black Tusk to work on a new game, InFamous: Second Son's latest developer diary gets wet, there's a new video for episode 2 of Bioshock Infinite's Burial At Sea DLC, the Sly Cooper movie gets a trailer, Elysium director Neil Blomkamp is supposedly directing the first episode of the Halo show, and the guy who did the O.D.S.T. commercials is on board for a Ghost In The Shell movie. The Elder Scrolls Online won't require a Playstation Plus membership on top of its monthly fee, Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 is a real thing, and Namco Bandai is now Bandai Namco.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 environment explored

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 12:30 PM PST

Konami has released another developer diary video for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 where members of the team at MercurySteam describe their approach toward designing the modern city which now surrounds Dracula's castle. In the latter half of the video, attention is turned to the character of Satan and how he will have evolved from his prior appearance in Lords of Shadow.

The setting is my favorite aspect of this new Castlevania. The traditional, gothic elements are still present in the design and they appear to be blended well with the glass and concrete of our age. I've long wanted this franchise to experiment with modern periods, so I'm pretty pleased with how this is all looking.

Is KidRobot launching Mega Man toy line?

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST

I had a brief dalliance with vinyl toys, nothing at all like our friends over at Tomopop, but it appears that KidRobot wants me back into buying plastic stuff to clutter my shelves with and make my wife question her life choices. A post on their Instagram page confirms the line's existence, but we've received additional information worth noting, including a possible launch date of June 19, 2014.

The information comes courtesy of a sales sheet sent to us anonymously, which indicates that KidRobot will be launching a series of blind boxed 4" figures and keychains featuring the characters of Mega Man, which will include all six original Robot Masters, doctors Light and Wily, Roll, Rock, Yellow Demon and three versions of Mega Man. A second page lists 7" figures of the Blue Bomber and Proto Man. The suggested retail price of the larger toys is printed as $39.99, while the keychains and smaller toys have an MSRP of $9.99.

Check out the full sheets in the gallery. We've reached out to KidRobot to confirm the legitimacy of the information we've received and will update with any comment they make, but I feel quite confident that this is a thing which will happen. And why not? This is one of the few Mega Man cash-ins of late that I can really get behind, as those little toys look great (and are typically of excellent quality).

Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition gets a multiplayer update

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST

An update to Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition has been released on Steam which adds deathmatch and cooperative gameplay modes for up to eight players online, across PC, Mac, and Linux platforms.

There is a lot about Duke Nukem 3D that I find disinteresting, but it's one of the few deathmatch-style games I have genuinely fond memories of playing. The weapons were fantastic and silly, which made the whole thing so much fun that I could forget about how terrible I was at playing it. I would not have bought the Megaton Edition without this feature, but now I'm seriously considering it.

Get autographs & art at Final Fantasy X/X-2 launch event

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD are finally almost here. That means Square can get on Final Fantasy XII HD now, right? Okay, I won't get too ahead of myself.

If you're in LA (or can be in LA on March 15), there's a Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD launch event in an art gallery, Gallery Nucleus. It will open to the public from 2PM to 6PM on March 15 and run until March 26.

March 15 is when you'll want to be there, though. Producer Yoshinori Kitase and Art Director Yusuke Naora will be there signing the first 200 copies of the game purchased (three days ahead of release) and the first 300 at the door will get a gift. There's also the art gallery, which features purchasable pieces, the profits of which go to Typhoon Haiyan relief. Oh, and a photo booth.

Sounds like fun. Anyone planning to attend?

New cosmetics, replay function, and Hero added to Dota 2

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST

Yesterday, a new game mode, the Hero Terrorblade, and balance changes were introduced for the newest Dota 2 update, scheduled to go live tomorrow. Today we get another Hero, Phoenix, a new feature, and HATS! The new cosmetic items were created and chosen by the Dota 2 community via the Steam Workshop, and I must say that they are all very appealing. They add cosmetics into the game at an insane rate, but this last batch is certainly top-notch!

The new feature is called Replay Takeover, and will work with any replay after this patch hits. It allows players to play a replay, and then take over from a certain point forward, allowing you to once and for all prove that "I can do better than that!" Doing so will save an additional replay of your sure-to-be-awesome efforts.

Needless to say, this patch cannot come soon enough.

Mask de synth: Hotline Miami 2 coming Q3 2014

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, the sequel to everyone's favorite neon soaked, hyper violent murder 'em up is coming out in Q3 of this year, 2014, according to the game's Twitter

Wrong Number takes place after the events of the first game and finishes up the story. Hamza has a lovely preview for it if you need to get suitably excited. It's slated to come to PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, and Vita.

How was Hotline (not to be confused with Hardline) on Vita? Seems like it'd be a perfect console for it. I might go Vita this time around.

Live show: Might & Magic X: Legacy

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Having grown up on games like Wizardry, Might & Magic, Eye of the Beholder, and other great dungeon-crawlers of old, you could imagine my excitement when found out there was actually a new Might & Magic title coming out. However, upon searching for the game a while back, I was saddened to find out that it was only in the early access stages, and pledged to avoid it until it was ready for a full-fledged release. Well, that time has come, and tonight on Mash Tactics, I finally get to sink deep into the world of Might & Magic X: Legacy.

While games like this might not be everyone's cup of tea, if you enjoyed old-school dungeon crawlers such as those mentioned above, or, if you liked what games such as Legend of Grimrock have more recently brought to the table, do yourself a favor and check out tonight's show. I've only gotten to scratch the surface of the game so far, but already it has my nostalgia levels at an extreme high. I can't wait to lose myself in deep dark dungeons, seeking out loot, and battling all sorts of beasties for hours on end. Be sure to join me on the beginning of my epic adventure tonight at Dtoid.TV!

Microsoft's working on something similar to 1 vs 100

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 09:15 AM PST

One of the most well-received experiments of the Xbox 360 era was the interactive adaption of popular gameshow 1 vs. 100. The social trivia experience is fondly remembered by most, and fans have expressed their interest in its return. While that'll likely never happen, Microsoft looks to have something similar up its sleeve.

Speaking with Polygon, Microsoft Studios' Dave McCarthy said "We will do something in the future for Xbox One that is like [1 vs. 100], because spiritually we thought it was a pretty cool experience, ourselves." He also added "It has a good image here. The approach is something we really enjoyed." Phil Spencer originally hinted last May at this style of game returning to the Xbox service, but McCarthy's words seem to be a bit more concrete.

Judging by the fact that 1 vs. 100 had more than 114,000 concurrent players at it's peak, the game appears to have a good image among Xbox Live users, as well. A new title along the same lines could go a long way toward swaying people to the Xbox platform. It may not necessarily be a system seller, but it might be a damn fine reason to keep coming back to the Xbox One.

Chinese TV maker working on Xbox-like videogame console

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST

At the start of this year, China lifted its ban on videogame consoles, allowing them to be sold on the mainland with government approval and provided they're made in Shanghai.

Those restrictions could slow Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft from capitalizing on this new market, but internal manufacturers have a leg up. China Daily reports Chinese television maker TCL Corp is making its own videogame console meant to be similar to Microsoft's Xbox.

Hopefully not the original Xbox.

It will be interesting to see if these dedicated home consoles can pick up steam in the country after the thirteen year band, given that both PC gaming and mobile, smart phone gaming have become so huge in the country. Is there room for consoles to come fresh on the scene and be successful, rather than ride along as the go-to cultural association for games?

Very Quick Tips: Broken Age Episode One

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST

Double Fine just released part one of Broken Age to Kickstarter backers this week, and it's a big deal for multiple reasons. Not only is the game highly anticipated, but the Kickstarter itself was full of fanfare and controversy, mostly for splitting the game into two acts.

Our own Caitlin Cooke is plugging away for a review [which has since gone live], but in the meantime, here are some tips I've collected throughout my journeys in the world of Broken Age. Most of these are at the request of readers who got "stuck" in an area or two, but like all adventure games, I urge you to try and beat it by yourself, and only consult these tips if you really can't progress any further.

Also, there are light spoilers abound, so if you're not a backer and aren't playing, come back after January 28 when the game is released to the public!

Source claims PS1/PS2 games to be playable on PS4

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 08:15 AM PST

Sony's streaming solution to backwards compatibility has only been confirmed for PlayStation 3 titles but a source has told Eurogamer that PS1 and PS2 games will eventually be playable on the PS4. However, they won't be part of the PlayStation Now service -- instead you'll be able to emulate PS1 and PS2 games locally as opposed to streaming them over the internet.

Whilst the ability to play older titles via disc was removed in subsequent PS3 SKUs, Sony does have a good record of supporting games from older systems. There's no word on whether the ability to play PS1/PS2 on your PS4 will roll out with PlayStation Now but Eurogamer's source is saying that there's the chance of "HD visual enhancements" for older games.

I wonder if the resolution enhancements will roll out the same time as the Gaikai-powered streaming service. We'll have to see what happens when PlayStation Now launches in North America later this year. The only bummer for me is that Europeans will have to wait until 2015 to see if Sony's streaming platform works as promised. Knew I bought that copy of Bushido Blade last year for a good reason.

Battlefield wants you back with player appreciation month

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST

DICE is still in damage-control mode over Battlefield 4 and the latest attempt to curry favor is a month-long player appreciation event, starting February 1. There will be a double XP weekend (two for Premium members), daily Bronze Battlepacks on weekdays and Silver Battlepacks on weekends, voluntary shortcut bundles which will unlock all handguns and grenades for the base game, and more. They're trying here, but, yeah -- I've moved on.

As for fixing the actual game, DICE VP and general manger Karl Magnus Troedsson says "...we are further improving a number of items commonly referred to as 'netcode.' This will tighten the overall multiplayer experience, and we will be able to share these items with you in detail soon.

"In February, we're also re-introducing the fan favorite feature Platoons in its first iteration. In this added social layer, you can team up with your friends to create your own social space and accumulate stats together. We're also working on other feature additions that you've been asking for -- stay tuned for more."

Okay, sure: Metal Slug 3 hits Steam next month

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST

I have lost track of the number of times I've bought Metal Slug 3, which usually isn't a good sign -- but it's one of those timeless games and I can't help myself. Absolutely no regrets. Temptation will arise once again in February when the game becomes available on Steam.

Besides the character-select screen's head-scratching artwork, this looks to be about what you would expect after so many ports. Of special note: DotEmu appears to be handling development alongside SNK, and there's online cooperative play plus cloud saving.

No word on a price yet, but the Steam landing page is active. I'm ready to zombie vomit.

Side with Thor or Loki in Paradox's new RPG, Runemaster

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

Paradox is looking to make a game so ambitious you'd think they're trying to please Odin himself. Runemaster is an upcoming title from the house that made Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, and many more hit strategy games from the Sweden-based developers.

Yet Runemaster isn't anything like Paradox has created in the past. It's a role-playing game with JRPG influences based on Norse mythology. It's a game where you'll play on the side of good or evil, preventing or bringing about Ragnarök (the end times). And it's a game that takes place across six procedurally-generated worlds offering emergent storytelling that changes based on what you do in your quests.

Blood Dragon creative director working on dream project

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST

The creative director of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is working on his next game at Ubisoft, which he's described as "the dream project. It's the one all of us have always wanted to make and it seems like they're gonna let us do it," he revealed to Polygon.

While it's possible the title could "go out the window," Evans says he's assembling his "dream team" and has earned trust from the company "to go and build a compelling and unique universe." This won't be more Blood Dragon, in other words. (Though that could one day happen.)

One member of this team is concept artist Darren Bartley whose DeviantArt page is telling in all the right ways. While Evans wouldn't give the name of the person responsible for art direction yet, he said it's someone who has an eye for 1980s and '90s aesthetics and previously worked on AAA stealth and third-person shooters. You don't say.

Funny how little actual information is needed for me to be interested in this.

Double Fine's Broken Age Act 1 now playable by all

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 06:15 AM PST

Well, this is it. After a short period during which only the backers of the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter project had access, Broken Age Act I has now been released on Steam for all to buy and play.

As successful as the Kickstarter was, I'm very interested to see what additional sales rack up on this one. The response has been overwhelmingly positive in press and in social media, which I expect will drive a ton of purchases from fence-sitters and people who have no awareness of the development history but discover it through the hype generated by its pre-release for backers. There could be a lot more money headed Double Fine's way yet.

The Elder Scrolls Online won't require a PS+ subscription

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

A Twitter Q&A session on the official PlayStation Blog has confirmed that a subscription to PlayStation Plus won't be required to play The Elder Scrolls Online. Game director Matt Firor says that just the already confirmed monthly subscription will be needed for the PS4 version, along with the PC and Mac releases.

Matt answered a few other questions, revealing that players on PS4 won't be on the same servers as PC/Mac players and that there will be separate "megaservers" for Europe and North America. There were some short answers about the DualShock 4 TouchPad, controller schemes, and how much hard drive space ESO would take.

Of course, there was no mention of the Xbox One version and the question of whether a Gold subscription would be required to play ESO but one would have to imagine paying the monthly sub and Xbox Live Gold on top of that would be too much for gamers. Bethesda has said it wants Microsoft to waive the Gold requirement but with no luck so far; I wonder if there will be a big difference in sales between the PS4 and Xbox One versions at launch.

GOG.com Time Machine sale begins

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 05:45 AM PST

GOG.com has worked up another interesting sale scheme you might want to take a look at. The "DRM-Free Time Machine Sale" started this morning and will be offering deep discounts on games from GOG.com's collection of classic computer titles, one at a time, for a limited time. How limited that time is depends on you, as purchase of the current title extends the time it's available at that price for an additional three seconds. Even if you don't choose to buy, you can have an impact with up-and-down voting which adds or subtracts a second. When time expires on a deal, it is then replaced with a new offer.

This is a much better idea than their prior, "limited number of copies" promotion, which went great until a game came along which nobody wanted and stalled out the progress of the sale for hours. Allowing shoppers to downvote to get the next deal a little faster ought to compel a little participation.

Nintendo: No plans to offer mini-games on smartphones

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST

Following lower-than-expected sales forecasts for the Wii U and 3DS this year, Nintendo will announce its new strategy to investors on Thursday. Reportedly, this initiative includes releasing mini-games and promotional materials for smartphones in an effort to convince players to grab fully-featured games for Nintendo hardware. Not so, says Nintendo.

In a statement to Engadget, the company denied the mini-game claim: "Nikkei's article contains information previously stated by Mr. Iwata during past press conferences, including statements which relate to Nintendo's willingness to make use of smart devices to promote our products. However during such past announcements Mr. Iwata has also stated that Nintendo's intention is not to make Nintendo software available on smart devices and as such, we can confirm that there are no plans to offer mini-games on smartphone devices."

It would seem Nintendo will have something for smartphones, then -- just not games. We'll find out soon enough and then arguments about how right or wrong the plans are can unfold.

The Burial at Sea: Episode Two trailer might ruin the fun

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 05:15 AM PST

So, I have about a million things that I want to say about this BioShock Infinite Burial at Sea: Episode Two trailer, but can't for running the risk of spoiling it for those that want the purest experience possible. If you're in this camp, it's probably best to skip this video altogether, as it seems to give away more details than you'd necessarily want.

Seeing as how this piece of DLC is one of the last remaining reasons that I haven't permanently relegated my Xbox 360 to the closet, this can't come out soon enough. In the meantime, watching Booker feed Elizabeth lines like she's on a blind date in a bad sitcom will have to tide me over.

Telsa Effect is old school point & click Tex Murphy

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST

The year was 2012. Radioactive bees ruled the skies, filling their endocrine sacs with the remaining wisps of human hope, and garlic wolves devoured the remains. Meanwhile, Double Fine put out a wildly successful Kickstarter for Double Fine Adventure as Telltale began pumping out its The Walking Dead, which would go on to take year end awards en masse, presumably killing all the bees.

Adventure games lived.

In this resurgence, Tex Murphy franchise creators Chris Jones and Aaron Connors took to Kickstarter with Project Fedora, an FMV-laced adventure game in the continued future noir San Francisco setting the series started in.

Cut the red wire! Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST

Asymmetric cooperative multiplayer is an idea that I always love to see in action. Artemis has done a good job proving that the concept is sound, if not a bit cumbersome to execute. The newest game that falls into the category of cool stuff I would probably have to play at an event because of hardware concerns is the bomb defusal simulator Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.

Developed for the recent Global Game Jam, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes requires one player to take on the role of the defuser, using an Oculus Rift and a Razer Hydra as the interface. The rest of the players act as his support back at the lab, poring over bomb schematics in an attempt to make sense of the device so they can all safely defuse the explosive. Of course, the bomb is on a timer, so players must act quickly.

For a game built in just a couple days, it is surprisingly tense. Just watching the video above had me on edge, especially when the timer drops to about thirty seconds.

Review: Bravely Default

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST

I'm not sure when it happened, but we've now fully moved away from the type of Japanese role-playing game we loved for three or four console generations.

What happened? Did we change? Did we stop liking this kind of game? Maybe we can blame that stretch of nearly-constant complaints of tired tropes and linear storylines there toward the end of it all. Maybe game makers just got tired of making these kinds of games.

Now we have RPGs that seem to go out of their way to avoid anything that would remind us of these games we used to love. But what's funny to me is that the more they seem to try to innovate, the less gamers seem to like them.

Me? I never became tired of what we would call an old-school RPG. In fact, I've been waiting for someone to make another.

Bravely Default is exactly that: an old-school RPG.

Blood of the Werewolf heading to XBLA and PSN

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 03:30 AM PST

Majesco's indie label, Midnight City, has announced that Blood of the Werewolf is heading to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network Q2 2014. The Metroidvania-style game was released on Steam last year, and the console release will add a new Endless Challenge mode that will offer procedurally generated and increasingly difficult levels for limitless runs.

The label also announced Avalanche 2: Super Avalanche, coming to Steam in the next couple of months. It's a endless climber and sequel to the Avalanche flash game. It's basically like The Blocks Cometh, except, um, bad.

You might be willing to have Conception 2's babies

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST

Conception: Please Have My Baby was a PSP RPG we mostly posted about (kind of a lot) because of its title and baby-making conceit. It was a laugh that we nurtured. I think, anyway. We're at that point where a running joke becomes a confusing reality as its Vita and 3DS sequel, Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars, is actually coming to North America later this year.

In a further realization of this fevered dream meets running punchline, I played Conception II. I held it in my hands. I watched writhing pastel silhouettes (it's not nudity if there's no nipple, says Japan) emulate sex and hatch slave labor. It all happened so fast.

Is this what parenthood feels like?

How weird was it seeing that reveal trailer for Plant vs Zombies: Garden Warfare at last year's E3? Plants vs Zombies was known for its focus on strategy and quirky humor, so it was a pretty surprising move for the developers at PopCap Games to bring such an interesting twist to their hugely popular franchise. As a fan of the series, I was mostly curious to see how it would translate from a tower defense style game to an online focused shooter.

But strangely enough, the transition worked out surprisingly well. And then some. Using the Frostbite 3 engine, PopCap Games took a chance and made its first foray into 3D, bringing along many of its characters from the series. EA invited some the press out to try a new build of the class-based shooter Garden Warfare and it turns out it's still just as strategic as ever.

A Sly Cooper movie is happening

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 01:32 AM PST

Sly Cooper has always been one of my favorite game series, mostly because it faithfully recreates the feeling of a Saturday morning cartoon. The cast is also likable and full of life, which is a testament to their solid character designs and voicework.

Well it appears as if an official movie is coming, slated for a 2016 release. The core cast of Sly, Bentley, and Murray are returning, and it looks like they're up to their old antics on the new trailer. The plot will involve Sly learning of his thievish ancestry, and stopping his arch-nemesis Clockwerk.

We don't know much about the rest of the cast, but I hope Dimitri shows up at some point.

Crusader Kings II expansion Rajas of India opens the map

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 01:30 AM PST

Crusader Kings II is going strong since its release two years ago. Last year saw the release of a Linux version, The Old Gods expansion (which lets you start playing 200 years earlier in history), and The Sons of Abraham expansion.

Now, Paradox is readying another massive expansion, The Rajas of India. As the name implies, you will now be able to rewrite history as an Indian ruler; the entire Indian subcontinent is opened up. This doubles the landmass of the base game.

That's a lot of map -- map that you'll get as a free update to the game, but if you want to control an eastern territory and show those colonialists what's what, you'll need the expansion. And why wouldn't you want it?

It has war elephants.

Dawn of the Plow is a cute little snowplowing game

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST

Dawn of the Plow is an adorable little snowplowing game for PC and mobile. The game sees you as a snowplower, and your goal is to simple clean up snow off the streets. You have to keep your approval rating up, and screwing around on the job will get you fired.

I love the visual style, and it honestly looks like it'd be a ton of fun when I have a few minutes to kill. Dawn of the Plow is available on Google Play, Windows, Mac, and Linux for $1.99. An iOS release is impending too.

Dawn of the Plow is a side-project and spiritual companion game to developer Dan FitzGerald's upcoming title, Dog Sled Saga. It too is a cute little game that involves you keeping your sled dogs happy in the same type of pixel art style. I just hope King.com doesn't go after Dan here over the whole Saga trademark.

Review: Soul Fjord

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST

Ouya users have not had a lot to be excited about for a while now. Excepting a few titles like Towerfall, there is not much worth owning on the microconsole, and especially few games that are not available elsewhere. As one of the more hyped titles, Airtight Games' Soul Fjord was looking like it could be a good reason to own an Ouya.

The elevator pitch is great. Soul Fjord is a rhythm-based, hack-and-slash roguelike with a truly unique setting that crosses 1970s funk and 13th Century Norse mythology. Protagonist Magnus Jones has to fight for his right to party after being denied access to Valhalla. Unfortunately, unlike Jones's expertly coiffed afro, Soul Fjord falls flat in its execution.

Theme Park creator sells AI company to Google for $400M

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 10:00 PM PST

Demis Hassabis isn't a household name, but chances are you've played one of his games. He was the co-designer and lead programmer on Theme Park (at just age 17), and has been involved with games such as Syndicate, Black & White, and Republic: The Revolution.

Red Bull Gaming has a big breakdown on Demis' life including how his contributions helped change gaming, but his biggest success, and the point of this article, is that he just sold his start up artificial intelligence company DeepMind to Google for $400 million.

Demis, who is also a neuroscientist, founded the company with Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman, and the company's direction was applying human learning to computers. It's speculated that Google will be using the technology behind DeepMind to improve their eCommerce recommendations, giving Amazon a good run for their money.

Mighty Quest For Epic Loot open beta arrives February 25

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 09:00 PM PST

The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot is finally set to enter open beta starting February 25. The free-to-play hack and slash game is kind of like a crossover between Diablo and Dungeon Keeper, letting you hunt for treasures across player created levels.

Additionally, the fourth playable character will be available for the first time once the game hits open beta. She's called The Runaway, and she's a melee fighter that uses a big axe in combat.

Great, now the NSA is using Angry Birds to spy on you

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 08:00 PM PST

Both the National Security Agency and the British Government Communications Headquarters has been spying on us through Angry Birds. They're able to get personal data from phone apps, and Angry Birds is one app that's been specifically targeted. Data from various phone apps that gather user data such as age, sex, location, martial status, and more have been acquired by these spying agencies.

The report comes from the New York Times and ProPublica, which examined leaked documents from whistle blower Edward Snowden. Rovio has stated they have no knowledge of the data mining, stating “Nor do we have any involvement with the organizations you mentioned," referring to the NSA and GCH.

Welp.

Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 is a real game that exists

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST

Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 is game that actually exists now. It has all the exciting features you'd expect in a car mechanic simulator, from unscrewing screws to using a laptop computer to check the tuning. What the hell did I just write?

The game went on sale last Friday and it's actually in the top 20 sellers on Steam as of this writing. There's a surprisingly amount of positive reviews for the game too, so I guess they're not totally cashing in on the whole "mundane simulator genre" as I thought they were seeing as they also released Professional Farmer 2014 last year.

Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 is normally $19.99, but you can get it for $14.99 till the end of January. A free update will be coming in June called the "Turbo Add-on" and another one called the "4x4 Add-on" that will offer off-road cars later in the year.

Videogames.

Behind-the-scenes with the camera cars of Need for Speed

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 06:00 PM PST

Ever wonder how they shoot those high-speed car sequences in movies? What they do to the cars, what kind of cameras they use, etc? Well, the makers of the upcoming Need for Speed feature film have provided a short behind-the-scenes featurette describing just that.

A lot of these rigs look really cool, and seem to showcase how much actual speed they're trying to capture with the races in the film, even with the lead actors (such as Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul) doing much of the driving themselves.

Now we just need a featurette describing how they put a plot in a racing game.

iPhone and iPad sales break Apple records Q1 2014

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 05:00 PM PST

If you ever wonder why your favorite developer keeps announcing mobile games, know that in fiscal Q1 2014 (October through December 2013, Year of Luigi), Apple sold 51 million iPhones and 26 million iPads -- record breaking numbers for both. Sony selling over 4 million PS4s in a month and a half is plenty cool, but, come on.

For the quarter, Apple posted $57.6 billion in revenue and $13.1 billion in profit. iPod sales are down by half (to 6 million) from the same time last year, though.

It's like that one time I was scuba diving with Shaq on Will Smith's private island and at dinner the servant boy forgot to pick up a fresh cask of Amontillado and I had to drink sherry from a bottle like some kind of heathen.

I can't even accurately fanfic such wealth.

New trailer and screens for Earth Defense Force 2025

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 04:00 PM PST

D3 Publisher is gearing up to release Earth Defense Force 2025 on February 18 in North America, and they've dropped more hype-inducing promotional material today. A new trailer, seen above, serves to remind once more that the bugs are coming back for one more attempt to take Earth, and only the EDF can stop them. In addition, new screenshots show off the four-player cooperative mode.

Oh, sweet cheese. I love these games so much that I'm salivating at all the new giant creatures glimpsed at in the footage. I am ready for February.

Mega64 would like your Papers, Please

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 03:30 PM PST

In the latest Mega64 video, it seems Derrick has become a bit too enamored with the game Papers, Please. He's set up a border patrol booth at the entrance to the Mega64 offices, which has now been dubbed the country of Acosta (after his own last name). Rocco only wants to go inside to get his iPad that he left behind, but Derrick is getting a little too into the role. Hilarity naturally ensues.

If only bypassing the patrol in the game was as easy as it is to get past Derrick. But at what cost? WHAT COST?!
