Upcoming Borderlands 2 update to add colorblind mode

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST

Gearbox Software is adding a colorblind mode to Borderlands 2 as part of an update planned for all versions of the game. Programmer Jeffrey Broome wrote a blog post covering his research into color vision deficiency more generally and what to expect from the mode.

The main issue for Borderlands 2 has to do with the way color is used to indicate an item's rarity. The studio's solution is to add a simple text indicator on item cards that say the color (e.g., "[Orange]"). This will appear for all items whether they're dropped in the world, are inside a chest or vending machine, or are being viewed from your inventory.

Not an ideal solution but it should get the job done. Once patched, Borderlands 2 will offer its colorblind mode in the Video Options menu with three types of vision deficiency selectable: Deuteranopia, Protanopia, and Tritanopia. It'd be nice to see this offered as a standard option for gamers but it's a welcome addition nonetheless.

A missed bill payment started latest war in EVE Online

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 02:30 PM PST

EVE Online, your world is so goddamn fascinating.

So, here's the story straight from CCP Games. The N3 coalition made up of the Pandemic Legion, Nulli Secunda, Insdious EMpire, and other smaller groups missed a bill payment for the system that Pandemic stores and stages their fleet. Sovereignty dropped across the system because of this, and the station was left vulnerable to capture.

The CFC, made up of the Goonswarm Federation, Razor Alliance, Black Legion, and the Initiative, partnered up with the Russian Coalition, made up of Solar Fleet, Darkness of Despair, and Against ALL Authorities, used this opportunity to capture the station.

Now there's an on-going war as the N3 coalition tries to re-secure their station. It's been over 10 hours since the battle started, and 57 Titans, the biggest and most expensive ships in EVE Online, have already been destroyed. That's over $200,000 worth of ships lost today alone.

There are streams you can watch of the fight such as the one below, but the system is in deep time dilation, so everything is moving super slowly so the server can handle the amount of players and everything that's happening.

Madden 25 predicts a Broncos Super Bowl win

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST

The Super Bowl is this weekend, fittingly attended by teams from both states wherein pot is legal, though housed in New Jersey, where, at the moment, snow does not seem imminent despite recent cold.

As Madden 25 tells it, the Broncos overcame a pick-six by the Seahawk's all-pro, Stanford graduate cornerback Richard Sherman and took a two score lead into the second half. Seattle's night wasn't over, however, as a Marshawn Lynch touchdown and subsequent two point conversion took the teams into overtime, tied at 28. After a stop by the Bronco's defense and a field goal, Peyton Manning would finally win another Super Bowl.

Picturesque, isn't it?

Madden was eerily accurate in its Ravens win prediction last year (though it missed the power outage) and has been correct in 8 of the last 10 simulations, but usually the nitty gritty details are far off. We'll see if this year's GMC-supported (lol), Xbox One-powered simulation gets it right.

We finally know who's developing Titanfall for Xbox 360

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 01:30 PM PST

Titanfall is being developed by Respawn Games on the Xbox One and PC. What we didn't know until today was who was developing Titanfall on the Xbox 360. Well now we know and it's Bluepoint Games! ... Who?

Their previous work includes God of War Collection, The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale on the Vita, and the HD version of Flower on the PlayStation 4 and Vita.

So yeah, they're good at making ports. Neat.

Doom was inspired by Tom Cruise's The Color of Money?

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST

I love reading about the development history of games especially some of the medium's classics. Doom is one such classic, the seminal first-person shooter turned 20 years old in 2013. Creators John Romero and Tom Hall have revealed some more behind-the-scenes stories about the game's development, including the amazing fact that the title was inspired by a line in the Tom Cruise/Paul Newman film The Color of Money.

Romero revealed that the advent of Intel's 386 processor was the thing that allowed Doom to be as truly fast as the team at id Software wanted it to be. Tom Hall talks about how the the title came into place, but also how a lot of the story beats and ideas he had ended up being cut from the game. Tom also mentions how Doom was going to be a landmark game, driven by technology.

id sounded like a crazy place to work because it seems like all the team knew they had this amazing thing on their hands that would be a true game changer. Hall name checks Minecraft as the next game that did a lot with very little; makes me wonder if we will see another game made by a small team that will have an effect on the industry like those two.

A new Hero and balance changes are coming to Dota 2

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 12:30 PM PST

The Chinese New Year is upon us, and everyone knows that that means: a new Dota 2 event! The update was vaguely outlined yesterday, but today we can get a much better idea of what the New Bloom update will have in store. First up is a new Hero: Terrorblade, who can use illusions to do his bidding as well as swapping HP with an enemy via his ultimate. Oh, and naturally there's a fancy new item for him as well, which gives him new everything: portrait, pose, minimap icon, and more.

Also included in the update will be a new game mode: Random Ability Draft, allowing you to pick a hero and their abilities. It's a silly game mode that is sure to soak up much of my time in the future, considering the possibilities and the less-than-serious attitude that is sure to accompany it. Right guys? Playing Dota 2 for fun is a thing, right?

Balance changes managed to sneak into this patch as well, and some are pretty significant. There are some overdue nerfs (Earth Spirit) and some seriously interesting buffs (Sand King!). You can check out all the information that was released today on the official website.

District 9 director reportedly directing Halo show pilot

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST

Director Neill Blomkamp, who turned heads with District 9 before the less well-received, recently released Elsyium, will be directing the Halo TV show pilot episode, according to Latino Review. Blomkamp directed some live-action Halo 3 promo shorts in 2007 and was originally signed on to direct the Halo movie before it fell apart.

The Steven Spielberg produced Halo TV show was a big deal at Microsoft's last E3 conference, but details since have been lacking. It makes sense they don't want to rush the production. As Microsoft Game Studios VP Phil Spencer has said, "Halo, you could argue, is the most important entertainment IP that Microsoft owns. ... If we're going to do a television series with Halo, we're going to do it the right way, and we're going to do it because we think it really matters."

About a year ago, Blomkamp, whose Elysium drew Halo comparisons, maintained he would still like to do a Halo film if he had full creative control. It's interesting to see him tied back to the franchise, at least for the first pilot episode. Maybe this test footage will give us some idea of what to expect from the series.

Sneak a peek at inFAMOUS: Second Son's stunning Seattle

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST

A new developer diary for inFAMOUS: Second Son has released, focused on how the gang at Sucker Punch will be bringing the city of Seattle to life in the game. Obviously, it's going to involve a lot of humidity-related environmental effects, and these are looking really sharp. I'm most impressed by the water streaks on buildings, which really capture the damp sheen the city so frequently enjoys.

It's one of my favorite cities to visit (and to play games set in) because it has so much character. Appears to me that Sucker Punch is trying hard to convey that visually, and I think it's working.

Black Tusk is focusing on Gears over its original IP

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST

Black Tusk Studios sounded familiar when the news about Microsoft's acquisition of Gears of War broke this morning. At E3 2013, the team showed off an untitled new IP during Microsoft's press conference. If that doesn't ring any bells, watch the video -- you may just recognize the footage. Now that Black Tusk is handling Gears going forward, where does that leave the game?

We'll see, basically. Microsoft Studios corporate VP Phil Spencer told Polygon that what was teased at E3 "was something that was done in Unreal and more of a concept piece. The studio has really been incubating different ideas over the past six to nine months on what they might work on, but the discussion with Epic obviously didn't start yesterday."

Talking to GamesIndustry International, Spencer elaborated: "I wouldn't say things have been shelved. Obviously, [Gears of War] will become a big focus of the studio and something that will be critical to them driving forward. There's not really something that was on the road map that all of a sudden goes away."

Finally, a pair of tweets by Xbox Jobs said "[Black Tusk] have not yet determined the future of the new IP at this point." Considering how little we know about the project, I don't really know how I feel either way. I like new IP, of course, but I'm also hoping this team can shake up Gears as a long-time fan. If they're successful, I can see the other title getting pushed back indefinitely.

Video: We played Broken Age with Tim Schafer

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 09:45 AM PST

This past Wednesday, Tim Schafer and Greg Rice of Double Fine Productions brightened our doorstep and hung out in the Dtoid HQ studio. Tim was like a magical woodland creature, exploring the nooks of our office, and majestically sipping Perrier. Passages from my fan-fiction aside, Tim sat down with the man with that hair, Max Scoville, and talked us through Broken Age live on Dtoid.TV. For those of you who aren't aware, Broken Age, formally known by the working title Double Fine Adventure, is the game that Double Fine Kickstarted after getting fed up with The Man and his pushy big-money publishing practices. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

At the top is the first part of our adventure, with all the sneak-peek gameplay of Broken Age you'll need to whet your appetite for the game. Between that, and our own glowing review of the game, you might just want to jump on Steam and pre-order Broken Age for that slightly reduced price before it unlocks tonight.

Nintendo reportedly unveiling mobile strategy this week

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST

Nintendo is going mobile sometimes this year, according to Japanese newspaper The Nikkei, picked up by Dr. Serkan Toto. According to The Nikkei, Nintendo will announce its strategy this Thursday in an investors meeting.

Nintendo isn't going as far as putting its properties on mobile devices with fully playable games, however. Instead, it's apparently going to use its mobile presence as a marketing arm for the games on its hardware, using video to introduce new releases, presumably through some kind of official Nintendo app.

Additionally, Nintendo is said to be planning to put out mini-games that tie in directly to a game recently released on Nintendo hardware, just to give smart phone users a taste of what they're missing out on Wii U or 3DS. Like a drug dealer. The report also says Nintendo's offering would be entirely free and that the company won't offer full games (freemium or paid) at this time.

It almost feels like a bold decision on Nintendo's part, to think that it will be able to convert customers with bite-sized mobile offerings in a world of infinite free, full-featured apps. Maybe there is enough brand recognition there that it will help, though. At the least, it could get kids nagging their parents to buy them the latest Mario game and help keep Nintendo IP floating in consumer consciousness as Americans watch (ever so slightly) less television.

These are the first three games of Square Enix Collective

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST

The pilot phase of Square Enix Collective, a platform in which companies can solicit feedback on pitches and potentially crowdfund through Indiegogo with assistance from Square Enix, has kicked off with its first three studios: Ruffian Games, Kitfox Games, and Tuque Games. You can see cast a simple "yes" or "no" vote for these pitches on the Collective site.

"At the end of the 28-day period, if there's enough community support, the teams could be offered the chance to be supported through crowdfunding via a partnership between Square Enix and Indiegogo -- and if the team hits their target, that’s when the game will go into development."

At the time of writing, Tuque's "post-human action RPG" World War Machine seems to have found an audience and the same can be said of Kitfox's Moon Hunters, described as "Starbound by way of Zelda." Ruffian's Game of Glens hasn't been so fortunate.

Let's look at the customization options for Thief on PS4

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST

We already knew that the upcoming reboot of Thief was going to have lots of customization on PC, but it's good to see the PlayStation 4 (and presumably all console versions) will have those options too. From the start of the game you can select all the modifiers you want along with a core difficulty setting. What I didn't realize was that the more modifiers you have active, the better points modifier you'll get, so hopefully there's some leaderboards that will show off your stealth skills.

It's still amazing that a game can ship in 2014 and have an option called The Iron Man, a modifier that restarts the game if you die or fail a mission. Permadeath in a Thief game? That is going to be quite a challenge. There's plenty of UI customizations in Thief too, but I feel that's going to be possibly a case of trial and error with those; remove too many and the game might just be a little bit too hard.

Rumored Titanfall beta set for February 14 (Update)

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST

[Update: Vince Zampella has just confirmed on Twitter that Titanfall will indeed see a beta on the PC and Xbox One. More details will be revealed in the coming days.

Xboxygen is reporting that Titanfall will see a beta on the PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 from February 14 to February 19. The beta will be exclusive through Zappos in France, and GameStop in the US along with other possible territories.

The reception to Titanfall has been quite the sight to see on Destructoid, and in general. This is really one of those games that you have to experience firsthand to truly show how this isn't just another formulaic first-person shooter.

League of Legends sees 27 million people playing DAILY

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that League of Legends sees 27 million playing the MOBA daily. DAILY! This more than doubles the 12 million counted back in October 2012. Over 7.5 million people play the game concurrently at peak hours too, an increase of 50% from the 5 million last March.

It definitely helps that the game is free-to-play. Still, that's a crazy amount of people playing every day.

Leaked presentation shows Left 4 Dead 2 in Source 2

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST

Famed NeoGAF leaker CBOAT has posted a screencap of what appears to be a Valve slideshow presentation detailing Source 2. The PowerPoint shows Left 4 Dead 2's plantation level rebuilt in the new engine and one of the slides, shown above, is clearly visible. Compressed, but visible.

I don't believe this necessarily backs up Left 4 Dead 3 as something which exists, however that is likely a game we will one day get to play. The leak is the first we've really seen of Source 2 in quite a while, though, and I'm ready to hear more from Valve -- whether that be about the engine, the next game, or probably both.

King removes Pac-Avoid, talks IP policies in open letter

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

"At its simplest, our policy is to protect our IP and to also respect the IP of others," King wrote in an open letter about intellectual property that serves as the company's response to criticism it has faced for trademarking the word "Candy" in the EU and attempting to do the same in the US, opposing Stoic and its Viking role-playing game The Banner Saga for using the word "Saga," and allegedly cloning a web game five years ago.

The letter and its defenses are about what you'd expect based on prior statements made by King, however it did admit that publishing Pac-Avoid, the one accused of being a clone, was a mistake. "We have taken the game down from our site, and we apologize for having published it in the first place. Let me be clear: This unfortunate situation is an exception to the rule. King does not clone games, and we do not want anyone cloning our games."

As for the trademarks, King says "We're just trying to prevent others from creating games that unfairly capitalize on our success" which, trademark law being what it is and King's specific trademarks being common words, means that King is unfairly hindering the success of Stoic.

"We've been the subject of no little scorn for our actions on this front, but the truth is that there is nothing very unusual about trademarking a common word for specific uses. Think of 'Time,' 'Money,' 'Fortune,' 'Apple,' and 'Sun,' to name a few." Thing is, the game isn't Candy. It's Candy Crush Saga. And I think many of us realize how ridiculous a system it is. Even if what King has done is commonplace, you can't blame us for not feeling sympathetic.

Here's some tantalizing info on the Legend of Grimrock 2

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST

Legend of Grimrock was a nice surprise, a defiantly old-school dungeon crawler brought to modern systems with a fresh coat of paint. Details on the sequel have been scarce but now a big blog post on the official site has shed light on what to expect. It looks like developer Almost Human is expanding on the core game but moving the location to a whole new area, the island of Nex.

It'll be interesting to see how the island setting is built into the dungeon crawling gameplay, as I'd imagine being able to see the sky might diminish the sense of claustrophobia I got from playing the original Legend of Grimrock. Still, some variety in the scenery would be welcome. The story in Legend of Grimrock 2 will be new as well without carrying over from the first game so this might make the sequel a great jumping-in point for new players.

There's also going to be a tweaked skill system, new puzzles and totally reworked enemy AI. A new playable race will also make an appearance which has me raking my brains for a suitable fantasy race that could be added. My bet? Dark Elves. Still no news about a potential release date but fingers crossed Grimrock 2 arrives this year.

Epic: Unreal Engine 4 games aiming for Christmas, Q1 2015

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST

Epic Games hasn't been talking much about Fortnight and now it's sold the Gears of War rights to Microsoft. What's going on over there? Unreal Engine 4 work and lots of it, from the sound of things. Speaking to Edge, EU territory manager Mike Gamble said that the company will have announcements to make at the Game Developers Conference in March.

Talking about the engine more generally, he noted "There haven't really been any announcements of the games still under wraps -- as soon as they start going live, then you'll see suddenly see that we're everywhere again. You'll be thoroughly sick of us!"

According to Gamble, we'll start to see UE4-powered console games during the Christmas period and in the first quarter of 2015. A fair amount of this will be new intellectual properties -- he reckons the split is "at least 50/50, if not 70/30 in favor of new stuff. "There's a lot of buffering," he said. "A lot of studios are doing a franchise iteration and  a new IP."

All eyes on Epic: Unreal-powered games, major VR support and more incoming, says Mike Gamble [Edge]

Final Fantasy XIV: ARR PS4 gets a final release date

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST

We already knew that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn would be coming to the PlayStation 4 in April, but now we have an exact date. Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida announced that the PS4 edition of the game would be hitting shelves April 14th, and that pre-orders will begin today.

There's a collector's edition afoot, which will provide content from previous editions as well as a fat chocobo mount and a moogle minion. As a reminder, the PS4 beta will begin on February 22nd, and if you own it on PS3, you're already in. I know the game is supposed to look gorgeous on the PS4, but that fat chocobo looks pretty rad.

One man has been trying to reach the end of Minecraft

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST

Unlike many other games that constantly have wacky stories coming out of them, Minecraft is one game I consistently enjoy. It's mostly because these situations are easy to replicate, and if you hear about something cool, you can usually log onto a server and play it for yourself. But one man has been on a journey for the past three years that would be difficult to replicate -- he's been trying to reach the end of Minecraft.

There is a portion of the game called the "Far Lands," where Minecraft's code essentially breaks, and the game can't procedurally generate content anymore. In an interview with gamer Kurt J. Mac from The New Yorker, we learn that Mac is attempting to reach said land, and he's been trying off and on over the course of three long years. He will most likely never reach his destination, but he's enjoying the quest, and in addition to broadcasting his travels, he's also raising money for charity.

It's cool stories like this where people create and roleplay their own journies that really help make open world games for me. Another standout that comes to mind are modded "super" hardcore, no HUD/UI, no VATs Fallout: New Vegas survival runs.

Retro City Rampage is set to hijack the 3DS in February

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST

Retro City Rampage has hit pretty much every platform under the sun at this point, but there's one more destination left -- the 3DS. After all this time, it's set to finally hit the eShop in February of this year for $9.99, although an exact date hasn't been announced yet.

RCR has had a really interesting development cycle, mostly due to creator Brian Provinciano's complete openness on the process. From detailing his struggles with Microsoft to the Wii version essentially being a "$20,000 gift for fans," his experiences have certainly shed some light on select portions of the indie development process as a whole.

Microsoft buys the rights to the Gears of War franchise

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 12:24 AM PST

Microsoft has always been synonymous with the Gears of War franchise, but now, it's officially official. It appears as if they've bought the rights in their entirety from Epic Games, allowing them to take over all past and future games, the latter of which will be developed in Vancouver by Black Tusk Studios under the leadership of former Epic Games director of production Rod Fergusson.

Well, this most likely won't impact anyone in a major way, as you're either a Gears fan or you aren't. It also all but confirms a new Gears of War game on the Xbox One.

You can make this happen yourself, so long as you have a modded PS3 that is.

Impressions: Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

Posted: 26 Jan 2014 10:30 PM PST

Tomb Raider had a rather interesting development cycle. It went from pure hype, to "this looks like an Uncharted clone," to controversy, and back to hype. But all of that dev drama aside, when the game actually came out, I thought it delivered.

As one of my favorite titles of 2013, I really enjoyed Tomb Raider for what it was, and thought it looked pretty gorgeous to boot. Those visuals have been jacked up for the Definitive Edition on the Xbox One and PS4, but that's about all that's been changed. It's still the same great game, for better or worse.
