Project Y2K will be playable at PAX East Posted: 26 Jan 2014 01:30 PM PST Today on Sup Holmes, Brian and Andrew of Ackk Studios had a lot of interesting stuff to say. We talked about their debut game Two Brothers, a bunch of unreleased games that I begged them to make available (one that's about controlling a level's-worth of Goomba-like guys at the same time as the try to kill a floppy-nosed Mario-type guy!), and so much more. We'll get to all that later, when the episode is uploaded to Youtube and iTunes, but in the meantime we can break out a little bit of news. Ackk Studios next full sized game, codenamed Y2K, will be playable at PAX East this year. Currently planned for PC, Wii U, and PS4, Y2K is a Mother 3-inspired polygon based RPG that takes place in an alternate reality in the year 1999, a time when the world was sure that all computers everywhere were going to freak out and die. The game will have a traditional JRPG-style overworld, a more dynamic 3D camera during dungeons, and "more stuff to do in towns than just walk around and talk to people". Sounds good to me! I've been excited for the game ever since I heard it was influenced by EarthBound, Suda51, David O'Reilly, and Takashi Marukami, but I'm even more excited knowing that I'll be playing it in under 4 months.
Clobbr is a game where you drop rocks on a cat Posted: 26 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST The developers of Clobbr sent me a code for the game on iOS, and I was shocked by what I saw. The game is reminiscent of Chu Chu Rocket in a couple of ways. Both games are about protecting mice from an orange cat, and both task you to arrange some arrows so that things go places. The difference with Clobbr is that instead of directing mice to escape from a cat, you're directing a large rock to drop on a cat's head. It's a bloodless affair, and no great pains were made to lead the player to enjoy watching the cat get "clobbered", but it'll still be enough to put some players on edge. It will be interesting to see if Peta jumps on this one, and if that will help or hurt Clobbr's sales in the long run.
Sup Holmes goes to Pleasantville with Ackk Studios Posted: 26 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST Today on Sup Holmes we'll be visited by Brian and Andrew Allanson, the two brothers who created Two Brothers. We'll be talking to them about what it was like to start their own studio from scratch, the risk they took on making a new Gameboy/Gameboy Color-style action RPG, what it was like working with Nintendo, how they've taken to the reception of Two Brothers thus far, their potential plans to patch the game, and much more. I'll also do my best to squeeze as much as I can from them about Y2K, their upcoming titles planned for PC, PS4, and Wii U. Join us at 1pm PST/4pm EST for the full shebang!
It's the world premiere of Super Smashed Bros.! Posted: 26 Jan 2014 06:15 AM PST Super Smashed Bros. is the new cartoon that I've been working with Machinima and a group of like minded artists who like Nintendo and drunk cartoon characters. The first episode is about Captain Falcon and Mario getting to know Mega Man, one of the newest members of the Smash Bros. Family. The animation here is by Mike Lambert (Binding of Isaac: Rebirth) and I think he did an amazing job. We'll be rolling out new episodes for the next 3 Sundays. From there, anything's possible, though the more views we get, the more likely we are to keep going, so if you like the show, be sure to spread the word about it. Thanks for watching everybody!
| No more character wipes for Starbound starting right now Posted: 26 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST Earlier this month we heard that the highly anticipated Starbound patch that would eliminate any future character wipes would be coming within about a week. Though it took a bit longer than that, we can all rejoice, because Chucklefish let us know in a post on the Starbound development blog today that it is finally out. Players who have been at it since the beta opened in December can now start a character that won't be lost to the ether with future updates. If you've been holding out, now is the time to start. One thing to note is that Chucklefish hopes existing planets won't be wiped in future updates, but is not guaranteeing it. Some other fun additions in this update are a savanna biome, new animations (so characters no longer eat bandages to heal), new alien attacks to avoid, landmines, and more.

Play Lillian Gish and the Edge of Reason as its created Posted: 26 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST Steam Early Access has changed the way a lot of people think about game development. As it turns out, a lot of consumers are more than happy to play a game that's not finished yet, as it not only gives them more time with the game, but it also allows them to give the developers feedback as they go. Devi Ever is working on that principal, but without asking the player to pay anything for her game in progress. Her new game, Lillian Gish and the Edge of Reason, will be in development until March 2014 (when her savings run out). She's working on the game day and night until then, posting updated builds of the game free of charge over on Deviever.com on a regular basis, taking feedback as she goes. It's been amazing to see how much the game has grown and evolved over the past couple of weeks. It started off as a simple run, jump and shoot action-platformer about a little bunny girl throwing knives at things. All of those elements are still there, but with tons of added mechanics, like drinking the blood of dead ninjas to power up your knife meter, the ability to throw giant knives to use as platforms, a Blaster Master-looking tank, door juice, wizards, and the promise of procedurally generated dungeons.
Club a dragon in 2015 with Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Posted: 26 Jan 2014 01:20 AM PST Capcom has been pretty quiet on their plans to localize Monster Hunter 4, which had the West's small but dedicated Monster Hunter fanbase a little worried. Well worry no more, fictional animal murderers! Capcom has announced that they're launching a new version of Monster Hunter 4 called Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (Monster Hunter 4G in Japan). The game will have more multi-player features than ever before (including online play), plus other as yet unnamed features. No solid release date here other than "early 2015" in the West (Autumn 2014 in Japan), which feels like a world away at this point. Still, new Monster Hunter is better than no Monster Hunter, even though we'll all be a full year closer to death by the time we get to play it. It'll be interesting to see if Capcom explains the reasons for the long wait. I wouldn't be surprised if they're holding out to see if the Wii U install base grows enough over 2014 to warrant a simultaneous release on 3DS and Wii U like they did with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.
