Nintendo doesn't want story of Earthbound published Posted: 19 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST Earthbound stands as one of Nintendo's most beloved cult classics. Known as Mother 2 in Japan, the franchise's loan release in North America is still highly regarded for its unique setting and characters, and, above all, one of the genre's most revered localizations. For Marcus Lindblom, the game's localizer, it has become more than just another game in is long career in the industry. Fueled by last year's virtual console release on Wii U, the game has seen a revival of sorts which has in turn has propelled Lindbolm's fame amongst fans. In an interview with Polygon, Lindblom has shared his recent desire to return the goodwill from Earthbound devotees with a book recounting his experience with the game's development. Unfortunately, Nintendo doesn't want this story shared. "It isn't anything that I can speculate on," he told Polygon. "All I will say is I was the one who went and talked to Nintendo because I thought I might as well see if I can get their blessing. I asked them and they came back and said we'd rather you didn't." Respecting the NDA Lindblom signed, he has agreed not to publish the book which he planned to Kickstart to cover the publication costs. "My goal was always to honor the game and the fans and Itoi's writing," he said. "I am going to honor Nintendo's wishes that I don't put something down into a book, but I know that the fan community is owed some tidbits of information and I will continue to do that and to talk about it." Posted: 19 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST I have no idea how to accurately describe Continue?9876543210 so I’ll just copy and paste this quote from the developer in here: “Continue? is for the type of person that appreciates odd, poetic word play, interpretation of the abstract, and existential philosophy…Continue? is meant to be played when a person is quiet and alone and sitting in bed late at night with a glass of wine or some weed, staring at the ceiling, thinking about their life. “ Yep. Sup Holmes passes the doctrine with Jason Rohrer Posted: 19 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST Today on Sup Holmes we welcome Jason Rohrer to the program. Jason is one of the fathers of the modern indie game landscape. While the PS3/360/Wii "next gen" marketing train was yelling in our faces that cut scenes, motion control, and high definition graphics were integral to enjoying games in new ways, Jason released Passage -- a game that utilized nothing more than the basic and was all the more affecting for it. Jason's released many, many games since then, including the DSiWare compilation Alt-Play, the world's first kickstarted DS cartridge title Diamond Trust of London, the two-player narrative construction set Sleep is Death, the litereally one of a kind game Chain World, the scale/shooting/strategy game Inside a Star Filled Sky, and the upcoming home security and defense title The Castle Doctrine. We'll be talking to Jason about what got him started in development, his willingness to show the player autobiographical traits that he may not be proud of, his plan to put The Castle Doctrine on sale at launch (and only at launch), and a lot more. Join us at 1pm PST/4pm EST for the full event! Read more... |
Namco Bandai to publish The Witcher 3 in Australia Posted: 19 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST CD Projekt has announced that distribution duties for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in Australia and New Zealand will be handled by Namco Bandai; they're also handling distribution of the upcoming RPG in Europe. I'd have thought that Warner Bros. Interactive would be distributing The Witcher 3 in Australia and New Zealand, what with them having done so with The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition -- but anyway, Warner Bros. will still be publishing The Witcher 3 over in North America, so they've got that.

Marvelous AQL flaunts Senran Kagura's European box art Posted: 19 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST In Japan, Senran Kagura is kind of a big deal. Marvelous AQL's ninja franchise has eclipsed its roots as a Nintendo 3DS game to spawn an anime series, manga, and a handful of new games. The property hasn't quite achieved the same meteoric rise in the West. Marvelous AQL label XSEED was once cagey about localizing the property at all, given "the difference in attitudes between Japanese culture and the more conservative culture here in the U.S." The publishing house eventually opted for a digital only release, citing "potential for disaster" with a physical product. Folks on the other side of the pond tend to be a tad more open-minded about this kind of stuff, though. And Europeans will have an opportunity to pick up Senran Kagura Burst in the flesh come February 28. Also, in case you think physical distribution is so passé, or you're embarrassed to purchase something with a cover like that in person, the 3DS brawler will go live on the Nintendo eShop on February 27.
