Senran Kagura creator helms rhythm game for PS Vita Posted: 15 Jan 2014 02:30 PM PST Champions of vocaloid rhythm games rejoice. Be merry. Frolic. Go dance in the streets. Okay, stop. Come back. I have important things to tell you. Important things, I say. Marvelous AQL is developing something called IA/VT Colorful for PlayStation Vita. Directed by Senran Kagura creator Kenichiro Takaki, the experience is described as a "sound catching" game based on the IA project. At least 60 tracks from a myriad of virtual idols and artists will be waiting for players when the title hits shelves in Japan on July 31. 『IA/VT COLORFUL(イア ビジュアルトラックス カラフル)』ボーカロイド・IAを題材にしたリズムアクションゲーム [Famitsu via Gematsu] |
Suck on this: Kirby sells huge in 3DS debut Posted: 15 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST Kirby: Triple Deluxe is looking great. There is still no word on a release outside of Japan, but in its first week of Japanese availability it has already sold 214,208 copies. That's more four times as much as the number two selling game (Puzzle & Dragons Z) and about the opening week sales of the last two Kirby games (Kirby: Mass Attack & Kirby’s Return to Dreamland) combined. You go, Kirby. Gematsu has a full breakdown of console and software sales. Monster Hunter 4 and Animal Crossing: New Leaf have both sold about one million more than the PlayStation Vita as a whole. Five 3DS games sit atop the week's highest sellers, followed by Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD on PS3. Only 2 Vita games are in the top 24, including the Vita version of FFX/X-2. A little shocked to see Gran Turismo 6 sitting at under 300,000 sales. The PS Vita TV, too, has only moved about 84,00 units, but maybe that's not so bad as Vita alternate. Square Enix seems to have butchered FF VI on mobile Posted: 15 Jan 2014 01:30 PM PST Take a gander at the above header. Look familiar? That's Final Fantasy VI on mobile devices, and to say it looks interesting is an understatement. Somehow Square Enix has managed to take the beautiful SNES original and make it look like a flash game, and is selling it for $15.99 on Google Play. This new port evidently has more than "reworked" visuals as well, touting features like touch screen prompts for moves like Sabin's Blitz abilities. To make matters worse, it appears as if there's a typo [Esper is correct] in the game's intro sequence. I'm generally pretty positive when it comes to the Final Fantasy series as of late. XV looks interesting. I'm anticipating Lightning Returns. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is one of the best MMOs on the market right now. But then something like this happens, and it just makes me upset, folks. Final Fantasy VI [Google Play via Kotaku] |
Hello Games is back in action after office flood Posted: 15 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST Even though Hello Games was quick to say everything would work out in the end, I'll admit to being worried about the studio behind Joe Danger and No Man Sky's when its Guildford, UK-based office was flooded over the holidays. High-end PCs, developer kits, furniture -- all lost. Managing director Sean Murray has answered some common questions about the current state of the company in a blog post. In short, this was a big setback, but it's nothing they can't overcome. "Right now we have set ourselves up at a new temporary (cramped!) location," he said. "Some of us are working from home. We've filled a couple of dumpsters with our old stuff, and built ourselves a make-shift post-apocalyptic set of workstations -- but we're back, full speed! Over the next few months we expect to be in a nice new office, or to rebuild our old one better than ever." Murray reiterated that No Man's Sky will not see a delay as a result of the flooding: "If we've lost some work, we'll make up the time." It's been suggested that they run a Kickstarter, but the team decided against crowdfunding at this time. "Not right now, but when we're old we'll look back on all this as a highlight," he wrote. "So please don't be worried for us (Mum), these last few weeks have been ADVENTUROUS. Maybe Christmas was a bad time for this to happen, but New Year's couldn't be better for a fresh start. I couldn't be more excited for 2014." The flood [Hello Games] |
Gabe Newell wants 'to make Greenlight go away' Posted: 15 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST There has been a wealth of news from Steam Developer Days as freewheeling game makers tweet like fiends. There's the Steam Controller redesign, Valve wanting music and video services for SteamOS, 75 million active users on Steam (a 10M bump in three months), and more. A tweet by Dave Oshry, recently responsible for reviving Rise of the Triad, also points to Valve's Gabe Newell being unhappy with Steam Greenlight. "Our goal is to make Greenlight go away. Not because it's not useful, but because we're evolving." Greenlight has received some criticism since its inception for still acting as a barrier to release. Newell has gone on record against closed systems, where Windows is heading, so working to increasingly open up Steam to smaller developers makes a lot of sense. |
Ouya co-founder leaves company Posted: 15 Jan 2014 11:45 AM PST Ouya co-founder Muffi Ghadiali has left the company, according to TechCrunch. Ghadiali, who previously worked as Amazon's product manager for Kindle, was a big part of Ouya development, leading teams responsible for the console's hardware -- from mechanical engineering to design -- and software. Ouya issued the following statement to TechCrunch:
According to a TechCrunch source, it was Ghadiali's choice to leave the company. Just yesterday I was sad to be reminded that Kim Swift's Soul Fjord is still releasing exclusively to Ouya later this month. The Ouya hasn't done well. The departure of an instrumental lead doesn't bode well. It does remind me of this video, though, which is always nice. OUYA Founding Team Member And VP Of Product Development Departs [TechCrunch] |
Apple paying $32.5M to consumers over in-app purchases Posted: 15 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST Apple has agreed to provide full refunds to consumers in a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. Apple is paying a minimum of $32.5 million over complaints from consumers that incurred charges when kids would spend money on in-app purchases without their parent's consent. Furthermore, Apple will be required to change how they do their billing process to prevent kids from unintentionally spending money on in-game content. The FTC notes that they received tens of thousands of complaints regarding this, including how one little girl spent $2,600 on Tap Pet hotel. Mean while, Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed Apple employees regarding the situation and why they settled with the FTC. "It doesn’t feel right for the FTC to sue over a case that had already been settled. To us, it smacked of double jeopardy. However, the consent decree the FTC proposed does not require us to do anything we weren’t already going to do, so we decided to accept it rather than take on a long and distracting legal fight." Apple Inc. Will Provide Full Consumer Refunds of At Least $32.5 Million to Settle FTC Complaint It Charged for Kids’ In-App Purchases Without Parental Consent [FTC] |
SF Dtoiders: Check out Button Smashing Night this weekend Posted: 15 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST This Saturday, our friends at Bay Area Fight Night are hosting an Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Street Fighter AE tournament, and you can join! The details are all over on their Facebook page, but here are the basics: it's $5 to get in, plus another $5 for each tournament (if you decide to enter), and there are a ton of other awesome games for the NES, SNES, N64, Dreamcast, and Gamecube to play! Tournament winners will take home shares of the pot, so you'd best bring your A game if you plan to compete. The event is being held at 20Mission Coworking, and the doors open at 6pm. Also, this is an 18+ event, so please don't try to smuggle in any children! Have fun! Oh, and I heard through the grapevine that a few Bay-area Dtoid celebs may be making the rounds, so be sure to keep an eye out! |
PS4, PS Vita horror title Kodoku looks twisted Posted: 15 Jan 2014 10:45 AM PST The artwork alone for Carnivore Studio's PS4 and PS Vita horror/exploration game Kodoku had me on board with the project. It's still very far off and that saddens me, but additional images, some of which appear to be in-game (or at least representative of gameplay), have appeared. Carnivore has also put up a teaser trailer for the game, viewable above. Gosh, this looks real weird. I've always found pigs to be slightly unsettling, and that goes triple for animals with human heads (see: 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers). A pig with the face of a man? No. NO NO NO. |
Very Quick Tips: Broken Age Episode One Posted: 15 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST Double Fine just released part one of Broken Age to Kickstarter backers this week, and it's a big deal for multiple reasons. Not only is the game highly anticipated, but the Kickstarter itself was full of fanfare and controversy, mostly for splitting the game into two acts. Our own Caitlin Cooke is plugging away for a review, but in the meantime, here are some tips I've collected throughout my journeys in the world of Broken Age. Most of these are at the request of readers who got "stuck" in an area or two, but like all adventure games, I urge you to try and beat it by yourself, and only consult these tips if you really can't progress any further. Also, there are light spoilers abound, so if you're not a backer and aren't playing, come back after January 28 when the game is released to the public! |

Live show: Talisman: Digital Edition Posted: 15 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] I'm just getting over a nasty head cold, so we're going to take things easy tonight, and jump into a few rounds of Talisman: Digital Edition. While I've never played this, or the board game that it is based on, the game has come highly recommended by a couple close friends of mine, so I'm pretty confident that it will be a good time. Speaking of friends, tonight, we're going to try and do what we can to help out a good friend of the live channel, Gregory Wilson, in his mission to get his graphic novel Icarus off the ground. With a great story, and awesome artwork by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles artist, Matt Slay, this book has a lot of potential, and deserves some attention. Come by the show tonight as Greg and I sit down and talk about the novel, the Kickstarter behind it, and the possibility of Icarus becoming a videogame somewhere down the line, all while kicking back and playing some Talisman. QotD: What was the last thing you backed on Kickstarter? |
Bloody Valentine: Last of Us DLC coming February 14 Posted: 15 Jan 2014 09:15 AM PST You don't have plans on Valentine's Day, right? Are you feeling...left behind? Don't worry. It's just some corporate call to arms that guilts you into spending way too much money on seasonal garbage. Why go out to dinner in elbow-to-elbow crowds with 45-minute wait times when you could stay home and play videogames? The Last of Us is getting prequel DLC, Left Behind, that focuses on Ellie and her friend Riley. It's going to be $15 and, according to Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann, it'll be out on February 14. Spend your Friday night indoors, why don't you. Also, apparently you can buy an American flag hat for a dollar, presumably for use in the multiplayer. Ew. |
Sucking down the secrets of Soda Drinker Pro Posted: 15 Jan 2014 09:05 AM PST A week and a half ago on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we were lucky to have Will Brierly (Soda Drinker Pro, My Girl, The Golden Girls) on the program. It was an episode filled with surprises, including death scares. Real-life death scares, guys. There were a few moments there when I was sure he was a goner, though I couldn't forgo the possibility that it was all an elaborate goof. If Will Brierly had a middle name, it would probably be "elaborate goof." His biggest game, Soda Drinker Pro, has been played by hundreds of thousands of people. It's been covered in major newspapers. It contains 99+ songs all composed by Will himself. Countless hours of work and promotion has gone into this game about... walking around and drinking soda. Is it all a parody of the millions of dollars spent on marketing so many meaningless junk food games under auspice of convincing consumers that they are "important" and "epic"? And why does Soda Drinker Pro contain a secret, brilliant, standalone game called Vivian Clark about taking on the consciousness of any object you interact with? Why did Will hide this amazing, potentially crowd-pleasing game inside of another game that seems designed to confuse and misdirect? I asked Will about all these things. We also talked about his experiences at real-life soda-lovers conventions, his arcade game Get Outta My Face, where he finds the time and energy to create so many games that are so likely to make him rich and famous, his signature "left-handed drawing" art style, and so much more. Thanks again to Will for hanging out with us, and tune in this Sunday when we welcome Jane Jensen (King's Quest, Gabriel Knight, Moebius) |
Next Car Game is now available on Steam Early Access Posted: 15 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST One of the genres that's seemed to fall by the wayside in recent years is the destruction-based racing game. Games like Demolition Derby and Burnout Paradise don't seem to be in vogue right now but hopefully Next Car Game (I'm led to believe that's a "working title") can recapture some of that reckless fun we've all had when metal meets metal at high speeds. It's a new title on Steam Early Access that's promising "breakneck racing and over-the-top crashes." Sounds good to me. I wasn't the biggest fan of Bugbear Entertainment's previous title, Ridge Racer Unbounded, but that game did explosions and car damage really well (when it wasn't happening to your own car). Next Car Game looks to have that same dedication to smashing cars but the racing apperas to be more traditional which is just what I'm looking for. You can purchase Next Car Game for $24.99/£18.99 and get to smashing up cars. Look at that video above -- how much fun does that look? |
Steam Controllers are getting a redesign Posted: 15 Jan 2014 08:45 AM PST Developers attending Valve's Steam Dev Days event have been tweeting like crazy. One of the more notable reports to come out of this developer-only conference is that the divisive Steam Controller will undergo serious changes before it's available for purchase. They really meant it when they said this was a hardware beta -- the gamepad's middle touchscreen is gone, there's a directional pad, and the A/B/X/Y buttons have shifted to a more traditional formation. The changes are said to be for the sake of backwards compatibility. The image above represents a work-in-progress design, but it gives an idea of what Valve is thinking for its latest iteration of the gamepad. It may still be goofy, but my desire to try one of these out is as strong as ever. Here's a 3D-printed model of the new design. |
Don't look directly at it: Glass plays with lasers Posted: 15 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST As a scientist, it is sometimes my job to shine lasers at objects, scribble nonsense down on a clipboard, and stroke the part of my chin where a beard would be if I could grow one. "Indeed," I muse to myself, "That is the laserest laser yet. Fascinating." Naturally, when lasers show up in games, my interest is piqued. The effect is enhanced when a game promises "realistic optics," as the recently released Android title Glass does. In this puzzle game, lasers of varying colors are present on the playing field, and elsewhere there are targets that require laser light in a specific color. Similar to the old WiiWare title Liight, Glass functions on additive color, where white light can be split into red, green, and blue. In contrast, Glass includes several optics-based tools that were notably absent in Liight, including prisms to separate or combine colors, mirrors to reflect lasers, and lenses to refract the beams. Glass is available now for free on the Google Play store. |
Valve wants video and music services for SteamOS launch Posted: 15 Jan 2014 08:15 AM PST Games consoles became multimedia devices a long time ago and it's no surprise that Valve is planning to have video and music services available for its line of Steam Machines at launch. As you're no doubt aware the Steam Dev Days conference is underway, and whilst there's no official word from Valve yet, Gamasutra has spotted a couple of tweets from developers present at the event who dropped the news. There are a lot of people out there that consider their Xbox or PlayStation console as their "Netflix machine" (my parents used their PS3 for Blu-rays and BBC iPlayer) so it's not surprising that Valve would want to compete with the big three console manufacturers on media support. I personally want as few devices plugged into my TV as possible so if a Steam Machine is going to support YouTube, Netflix, Spotify and catch-up TV services, then that's a good thing. Of course, as Smart TVs become more and more commonplace, how much will support for streaming media be a big selling point? Assassin's Creed Liberation HD is a fine upgrade Posted: 15 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST When Liberation was released on the PlayStation Vita, I heartily enjoyed the opportunity to play Assassin's Creed on the go. Aveline was a great addition to the franchise, and it showed that Ubisoft could actually handle a heroine with grace. It wasn't a flawless experience however, as it had a number of frame-rate issues among a few other technical hiccups, mostly due to the fact that it was crammed onto a portable. Here we are over a year later with the HD port, and although some of the problems confusingly remain, the overall package is a much stronger effort. In other words, you could say the original has become...liberated. |
There are now 75 million active Steam users Posted: 15 Jan 2014 07:45 AM PST As of October 2013, Steam had 65 million active user accounts. That figure has since shot up to 75 million, Valve announced during its Steam Dev Days conference happening now in Seattle. The company also provided a summary of the platform's sales revenue last year, broken down by region. As you'd expect, North America (41 percent) and Europe (40 percent) represent most of the money spent on Steam, but Russia is a real up-and-coming market with 128 percent year-over-year growth. I'm now recalling how much I didn't want to install Steam for Half-Life 2. |
Get ready to start playing Starbound for keeps Posted: 15 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST Starbound is fantastic. Its scope is enormous, and it could easily keep players exploring for years to come. At least, it can once progress is no longer reset every few weeks. Thankfully, that date is soon approaching, with a Starbound development blog post yesterday promising the next patch in "about a week's time." This patch contains the fix to save files that makes each one forward compatible. In other words, the character wipe that will happen with this patch should be the last one ever. On a slightly unsettling note, Chucklefish has added that there is a possibility for worlds to be wiped in the future, but that those "hopefully" would be safe from deletion as well. So it still may not be wise to start working on a massive futuristic fortress in case the planet chosen for real estate makes like Alderaan and blows the joint. Also included in the upcoming patch are options for more severe penalties for dying (drop all items and permanent character death), more weapons (revolvers, shivs, and alien weapons), and more decorative hats (hats). Has it been a week yet? |
Umoove is a cool free tech demo on iOS Posted: 15 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST Similar to Epic Citadel, a free new tech demo app has launched to show off what iOS devices can do with the right developmental skills. Billed as a "3D Face and Eye Tracking Flying Game," this demo basically allows you to fly around (admittedly, without a carpet -- but it feels like it!) and collect potions to, well, keep flying. It's not a fun "game" in the sense that many of you will probably get bored quickly, but as a piece of tech, Umoove actually works, and I found the tracking to be pretty spot on. They aim to get their "EyeSDK" and "FaceSDK" into more apps. The developers state that Umoove is "only the beginning," so expect more from them in the future. Umoove [Apple] |
Here are two of Killzone: Shadow Fall's free maps Posted: 15 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST Guerrilla Games has given a first look at two upcoming multiplayer maps in Killzone: Shadow Fall. The pair of maps, The Cruiser and The Hangar, are based on environments from the game's single-player campaign -- that often seems to be the case, doesn't it? One is all about close-quarters combat, the other, not so much. You can guess which is which. These maps are going to be free once finished, with or without a Season Pass. Guerrilla also says it's working on the first DLC expansion for Shadow Fall, among other things. I haven't been playing the game, but I'll go out on a limb and say that players are going to appreciate getting these new maps before too long. It's nice to have a little variety. Club Nintendo switches game rewards, adds F-Zero Posted: 15 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST Club Nintendo has shifted its digital rewards around a bit as of this week. As of right now, you can grab Game & Watch: Cement Factory (100 Coins, 3DS), Spin Six (150 Coins, 3DS), F-Zero (200 Coins, Wii U VC), and 1080 Snowboarding (200 Coins, Wii VC). As a side note, 1080 Snowboarding is listed for the Wii U, but that's incorrect -- it's actually only for the Wii. The Wii U Virtual Console doesn't have N64 games at this time. Unless Nintendo is somehow hinting at a future update (yeah right). Rewards Catalog [Club Nintendo] |
WarioWare's Ashley is the latest Assist in Smash Bros. Posted: 15 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST While she won't be a playable character in Super Smash Bros., the fact that Ashley of WarioWare fame is included in the game at all warms my heart. She's going to be an Assist Trophy. We've only got the one screenshot to go on, so I'm hoping her devilish companion Red will also make the cut. Not to rain on King Dedede's parade -- he's a good addition to the roster -- but this simple Assist Trophy is the bigger news item for me. WarioWare is among my favorite things Nintendo has ever put out and it's a series that, as of late, hasn't gotten enough love from the company. Also, talk about a nice transition to 3D. She looks great! |
Hardline live: Lightning Returns, DayZ, and SimCity Posted: 15 Jan 2014 05:15 AM PST I nearly forgot to write up one of these promotional posts suggesting you join us for a live recording of Hardline on Twitch.tv, but I didn't. This week's later-than-usual episode is brought to you by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and its late buses. Today we'll be chatting about Dale's 30+ hours with Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, DayZ selling a million copies while still in Steam Early Access, developers defending the Wii U, and Maxis taking half a year to make SimCity playable offline. Join us in chat ... right now, actually. We'll be live in just a moment. |
Review: Muramasa Rebirth: Tales of the Nekomata DLC Posted: 15 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST Muramasa Rebirth is a fine upgrade to the original game, but there was one thing that didn't sit right with me. For whatever reason, someone decided to take the only new content that was created for the game (four new characters with original stories), and sell it as DLC rather than an extra. It's a shame, because with a bit of extra content, Rebirth would have been an absolute must-buy for pretty much everyone -- even if you played the original Wii version to death. Having said that, if all of the DLC is as good as the first entry, it'll be worth picking up regardless. Also, cats. |
No Man's Sky's procedural algorithm surprised Hello Games Posted: 15 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST No Man's Sky is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious upcoming games, promising an infinite, procedurally generated universe to explore while being built by a small indie developer best known for the Joe Danger series. In an interview with Edge, Sean Murray of Hello Games discusses some notable experiences with the development of No Man's Sky, including how procedural generation changes the development process, what the studio is doing to combat unnecessary "dickishness" in the community, and why the game is being compared to Dark Souls in some respects. Interestingly, Murray relates that the production of a procedurally generated world can surprise its own creators. After setting up the rules for environment generation, he said, "I run the game and I charge about an environment and find some caves and think, ‘They look good!’ Then I fly to another planet and see that they look terrible, and they’ve created some kind of crazy landscape. And then you fly to another and there are no caves, and then [on] another there’s water in the caves, because of where the sea level is on that planet, and you dive down and find that there’s actually some small bacteria-based life there, and it comes as a total surprise." The entire interview is a good read for those interested in the inner workings of the massive fuchsia space exploration title. Check it out. Bravely Default gets a new job trailer Posted: 15 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST Many of you out there have already been playing Bravely Default, but in the US, we're still waiting for that early February release date. In the meantime, here's a new trailer from Nintendo that shows off the game's various jobs, and you'll probably recognize some of them if you're a Final Fantasy fan. Aesthetically I'm a huge fan of the Valkyrie class (Lancer), mostly because that helmet is pretty damn badass. If you want to experiment with the job system for yourself, check out the demo on the 3DS eShop. |
R.B.I. Baseball returns after almost two decades Posted: 15 Jan 2014 03:30 AM PST R.B.I. Baseball, one of the most beloved baseball videogame franchises, will make its long-awaited return this spring with the release of R.B.I. Baseball '14. The next installment comes after a nearly 20-year hiatus, as the last entry in the series was R.B.I. '95. Details are sparse at the moment, but the game will come to "current and next generation consoles, and mobile devices," the latter meaning both smartphones and tablets. Other than that, we only know that R.B.I. Baseball '14 is being developed by MLB Advanced Media. It seems like a prime time for the series to make a comeback, given that 2K recently pulled its baseball franchise, meaning that it will only launch alongside Sony-exclusive MLB 14 The Show. Hopefully this can provide a hefty dose of feel-good nostalgia, even though something tells me we will no longer need to write down codes to save our progress. |
Dr. Wily gets a shot at being good in Mega Man #36 Posted: 15 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST The Archie comics Mega Man and X backup event will debut in Mega Man #34-35, but after that, Issue #36, "A Chance at Redemption" will drop in April. This story will deal with Dr. Wily as a free man, cleared of all his prior transgressions against mankind. It'll feature Wily attempting to live a life of peace in tandem with Dr. Light, and as any Mega Man fan knows, it'll probably go terribly wrong at some point. Check out both the regular and alternate "Trial of Dr. Wily" covers in the gallery below, and expect more coverage of the Mega Man X storyline in particular in the coming weeks. Considering the fact that the X series hasn't gotten much love for many years, it'll be worth the wait! |
Titanfall Xbox One controller is kind of cool, I guess Posted: 15 Jan 2014 02:45 AM PST Yep, it's a "look at this new controller" post. It sure is white, black, and orange, huh? I guess it probably looks like something that someone that controls mechs would use. Maybe. I don't know; I've never seen a mech, let alone controlled one. Are you done looking at the controller yet? Did you decide that this is something that needs to be in your life on March 11 when it releases alongside Titanfall? Well, then you get to pay a bit extra for the privilege, as the Microsoft store has it listed for $65 instead of the usual $60 for Xbox One controllers. But hey, what's an extra $5 to do your mech murdering in style? |
Spearhead Games launches weekly community stream Posted: 15 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST I recently had the opportunity to speak to Spearhead Games co-founders Simon Darveau and Malik Boukhira on what it means to leave AAA development and create your own studio. Within one year Spearhead went from non-existent to shipping their first game, Tiny Brains, on the PC, PS3, and PS4, which is quite an accomplishment. But they also learned a lot from the indie development process, and that it wasn't just "shipping a game." You also have community management, PR, and marketing to worry about. As a result, Darveau and Boukhira have vowed to improve the way they approach the community, and have started a weekly Twitch show. It'll run on Thursdays at 7PM EST on their channel, and will focus on interacting with fans and learning what they want to see more of in their games, as well as sharing the process of game development with anyone who is interested. Stay tuned for our full interview with Spearhead, coming in the next week or so. Spearhead Games [Twitch] |
Nintendo restocks coveted Club Nintendo 3DS case Posted: 15 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST Back in 2012, Nintendo released a pretty sweet looking 3DS game card case on Club Nintendo, and it sold out in days. Fast forward to 2014, and there's actually a new case in town, and this time it heavily features Zelda art, as well as Mario and Animal Crossing designs (check them out in the gallery below). To be clear, it comes with three pieces of artwork and the cover is interchangeable -- you don't have to choose between them (outside of Zelda vs. Animal Crossing as your main theme). If you want it, it's 400 Coins, and it holds up to 18 game cards. These usually sell out pretty quickly, so grab it if you've been itching for one for a while! Look at Lightning's many outfits in our music video Posted: 15 Jan 2014 12:05 AM PST Yesterday, while working on our preview of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, I asked those in the office if I should make some kind of quick video to show off some of the costumes I've collected in the game. Everyone insisted that I should, so I did. I also asked if I should put together a quick song to go with the video, and I found that Hamza was more than willing to share his lyrical ideas. All of his lines were pure gold, but not all of them fit with the song I wanted to do. I really wished I could have used "I wanna ogle your moogle," for example. The only line I kept was his best one: "You J-poppin' my heart with those threads, girl." The rest of the lyrics (as well as the lead vocals, background vocals, and instrumental parts) are all me in this cover of the Final Fantasy XIII main theme. Sorry for this. |
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII after 30 hours Posted: 15 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST SHUT UP, Hope! I'M TRYING TO WORK HERE! Okay, sorry. Hope is always talking in my ear. Non-stop. You'll see. Oh my God, you'll see. I'm coming off over 30 hours of nearly non-stop play of Square Enix's latest, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, and I have a lot to say. Of course, I'll hold the full verdict back for our review, coming early in February, but I hope to cover a lot of ground and answer a lot of questions you've had in this preview. If you have any other questions beyond what is covered in this preview, hit me up in the comments section below and I'll do my best to answer them without breaking embargoes that I've signed off on. |

Enjoy these Destiny screens with your morning coffee Posted: 14 Jan 2014 10:00 PM PST While the initial reveal left a bad taste in my mouth, I'd be insane to say I wasn't looking forward at all to Destiny. It's easily one of my most anticipated games of 2014 in fact, I just hope Bungie can deliver on their vision. In the mean time, enjoy some new screens from Destiny. It's probably stupid that I'm overly excited on discovering new cloaks to wear in the game, huh? |
If You Thought It Was Harem Paradise, It Was Yandere Hell Posted: 14 Jan 2014 09:00 PM PST If You Thought It Was Harem Paradise, It Was Yandere Hell. Nope, I'm not talking crazy. That's just the name of Nippon Ichi Software's newest game, heading to the PlayStation 3. The game will be out on April 24 in Japan for 6,800 yen at retail, while the digital version will be going or 5,714 yen. The game is being directed by Tatsumi Takuma, Katsunori Kobayashi and Kikakuya are handling the scenario, and Hiiro Yuki is behind the character design. As for what the game is, it's about mascot characters and, what else, high school girls. Nippon Ichi announces PS3 adventure game If You Thought It Was Harem Paradise, It Was Yandere Hell [Gematsu] |

World of Warcraft designer Greg Street now at Riot Games Posted: 14 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street has joined Riot Games as lead game designer. Previously Greg was lead systems designer on World of Warcraft where and his involvements with the game were huge. He led half of the design team, and oversaw the development of various aspects of the game from class, items, professions, combat, PvP, UI, and major feature designs. Greg shipped three expansions in his time with Blizzard, and contributed to two others. Greg started with Riot Games in December, and it's not a bad move at all. World of Warcraft reigned king for the longest time, and it's pretty safe to say that League of Legends is the new ruler in the PC scene. |
NECA's next Nintendo themed figure is based on Predator Posted: 14 Jan 2014 06:00 PM PST I don't know who at NECA we have to thank for this series, but they deserve a pile of cash for it. So in case you missed it, NECA has been releasing figures on classic movie characters with a Nintendo color scheme based on how they appeared in their respective games back on the original Nintendo. First there was the Jason Voorhees, then Freddy Krueger, and then there was a Robocop one we totally missed. Well the next one in their line is based on Predator. The image to the left is the Predator toy, and the image to the right is the Predator from the old Predator game. NECA is only teasing the figure at the moment, but we'll let you know when we can throw our wallets at this one. NECA Sneakily Reveals New Nintendo-Colors Predator Figure [Topless Robot] |
Valve releases SteamVR beta for Oculus Rift users Posted: 14 Jan 2014 05:00 PM PST Valve has released a beta version of the SteamVR for the Oculus Rift. Valve programmer Joe Ludwig details how users will install and use the new beta over the on Steam forums for those of you interested. So what can you do with this now? Why interact with the Steam user interface in virtual reality land! This is just the first of a major step for Valve on their push into the virtual reality space. Valve's Dev Days is currently taking place in Seattle, and they have a very heavy focus on the virtual reality space. Is virtual reality the future of gaming? Will all our significant others be operating systems? Does the Iron Throne belong to Daenerys Targaryen? These are the questions on my mind tonight, Destructoid. [Image by Imogen Scoppie] |
