If you see these three guys in DayZ, start running

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST

Yesterday, Conrad told me he was thinking of trying DayZ's alpha release on Steam. He expressed concern about getting into a player-driven game -- particularly one as Stanford prison experiment-esque as this one -- without a friend. It's a mighty strange world out there, as evidenced by yet another video in which players go to great lengths to make DayZ memorable.

The parts where the player's voice modulator cuts out kill the immersion, sure, but the act is still a grade-A effort in creepiness. I'm going to politely decline playing this with Conrad, I think.

Sir, You Are Being Hunted dev released a cool, free racer

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST

The lovely, successful Kickstarter game Sir, You Are Being Hunted is sitting in an alpha state. I'm eagerly awaiting its completion -- it's expected to be in beta within a few months -- so I can be chased around an island for sport by aristocratic robots.

In the meantime, Sir, You Are Being Hunted developer Big Robot has gone ahead and put a free, procedurally generated racer on its website. You can download it for free on Mac or PC. It's pretty cool looking, a bit like the recent Race the Sun.

Quake Live has finally left the browser

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST

Gosh, Quake Live brings me back. Bethesda has announced that the standalone client for this free-to-play, browser-based game is out now on PC. Existing players will need to download a launcher which will update their installation files. Current Mac and Linux players, on the other hand, are out of luck. The new client is PC-only, so the only way to continue playing will be through emulation or visualization software running on those platforms. That's got to sting.

I'm not sure what psychological forces are going on in my head while playing in-browser games, but something about those experiences tend to rub the wrong way. I never stick with them -- unless it's a short adventure title like Samorost. Playing something as involved as Quake in a browser, however, feels weird to me. Probably for no good reason.

Now that it's gone standalone all these years later, I don't really have any desire to play. Rats.

Comic-Con will only sell single-day badges this year

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST

Not unlike PAX, San Diego Comic-Con has in some ways become a victim of its own success. The show has grown so popular that the biggest venues can't contain the amount of people who want to go every year. Drastic measures are in order it seems, as the show organizers will no longer sell four-day badges this year. If you want to get in, you have to pick individual days a la carte.

Badges for the preview night will not be available for individual sale however. If you want in before the rest, you have to purchase a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday badge. Considering how fast individual tickets will sell out in the absence of the four-day, you can expect preview night to be an even calmer affair.

It is worth noting that the posting only lists the July San Diego convention specifically, so it remains to be seen if New York and other subsidiary conventions will be affected. Previous Comic-Con attendees can also use their member IDs for earlier registration, so be sure to take full advantage.

Xi3 Piston is not a Steam Machine because Windows is king

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST

We've been in a glut of Steam Machine news this CES. There are 14 partnered boxes. Of course, last CES there was one partnered box, the Piston from Xi3. Valve and Xi3 subsequently split, but the tiny, thousand dollar living room PC released.

Xi3 CMO David Politis, speaking to PC Gamer, said, "We believe, and I think the market’s very clear about this, that the biggest concentration today is in the Windows marketplace. So we’ve gone separate directions today—that doesn’t mean we’re not supporting Valve."

Politis continued, "They’ve got 50+ million users on Steam. Why wouldn’t you support them? But the thing is, so does EA, with Origin. So we support Origin as well. In fact, we believe that if you can play it on a computer you should be able to play it on a Piston—and that’s our whole viewpoint."

Piston also allows for Linux installation, in addition to its own OS. I guess if you make a $1000, non-upgradeable box, you'll want it to do more than just run Steam. It only using 40 watts of power is pretty neat, though.

Your classmates are dolphins, you have to cheat on a quiz

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST

Have you ever been woefully ill-prepared for a test that could negatively impact your life because of the test score blinded educational system? And, also, all your classmates were dolphins? Welcome to Classroom Aquatic.

As an exchange student in a dolphin-led classroom, you must cheat on your porp quiz in order to finish within the allotted time, all without alerting the professor or fellow students. Your glances must be surreptitious and porpoiseful, while you can also toss an eraser to cause distractions. You can even toss it at a skeleton.

The second best part of all this is that this game works with the Oculus Rift for a more realistic cheating simulator. There is also a non-Rift version, however. Both can be downloaded, in alpha state (expect bugs), here.

Fable Anniversary goes gold, pre-order bonuses announced

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST

With just under a month until release, Fable Anniversary has gone gold and soon we will be able to remember what a proper Fable game feels like. Spare me your single-button combat silliness. As is par for the course, pre-order bonuses await the faithful willing to pay for their copies ahead of time. There are three packs, each containing an exclusive weapon and outfit.

These range from the more grounded Peirates Pack, which comes with a cutlass and pirate outfit befitting a swashbuckler, to the sillier Snowspire Pack, a guard uniform with a dead fish of all things for a weapon. The Apollo Pack looks like the winner for me though -- it comes with a hooded rogue costume and crossbow. It still remains to be announced exactly what bonus will go to which retailer, though Amazon is listing the Apollo pack as its own.

Fable Anniversary will release on February 4, 2014 for the Xbox 360.

Polk Audio's Melee headphones are nice, but expensive

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST

Polk Audio has crafted gaming headphones called the Melee that was created in tandem with the sound engineers of the Halo and Forza series to deliver top-quality sound. It's a pretty ambitious project, and overall, I'd say it paid off.

I'm impressed, but $200 is pretty hefty for a device that's mostly tailored towards one console.

Band together to fight a mech, or BE that mech in Outrise

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 09:45 AM PST

Asymmetric multiplayer is always interesting to me, because as an idea it could fail spectacularly if proper balance is not achieved. The Left 4 Dead series has handled it quite well, with each side having a decent chance of defeating the other. The team behind the recently announced Outrise invokes L4D in its one-sentence pitch, but it gets even better. The developer describes the game as "multiplayer Shadow Of The Colossus meets Left 4 Dead and with old school sci fi look and feel." Yes please, I'll take two.

The main element that differentiates Outrise from those two legendary titles is that one player controls a gigantic mechanical war robot, while fifteen others work together as puny humans to topple it. The human players can pilot vehicles, control small bots, and climb on the mech itself, while the robot can retaliate by stomping them all into a sticky red paste.

Thus far, the project only has concept art and the written ideas to show, but it is being developed by a small team of including industry veterans with experience on games such as Metroid Prime and Hawken. It is clearly very early in the development process, but this looks like one to keep an eye on for the future.

Live show: Blackguards with Daedalic Entertainment

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

You won't want to miss Mash Tactics tonight, as we kill off the week by hanging out with the awesome peeps from Daedalic Entertainment, and show off a few hours of their upcoming strategy role-playing game, Blackguards.

I'll be running into this blind tonight, and don't really know much about the game outside of it's core ideas, but I'd be lying if I said those ideas didn't have me extremely intrigued. For starters, I love turned based strategy and role-playing games, but that's not the thing that has me wanting to play this title. What interests me the most is it's unique story about a band of criminals and misfits taking center stage as the main protagonists. A far cry from your usual goodie two-shoes, save the princess approach. Come check it out for yourself tonight at Dtoid.TV

Beyond two sales: Beyond sold over a million copies

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 09:15 AM PST

Beyond: Two Souls developer Quantic Dream put up this a sort of "thank you" (Ellen) webpage to commemorate selling over one million units before Christmas of last year. Which was also Christmas of like two weeks ago, but also technically of last year.

The studio's last venture, Heavy Rain, also crossed a million sales. In fact, it crossed three million sales last August, a few months after news it made $100 million -- more than twice its $40 million budget.

I liked Heavy Rain and I want to play Beyond. More importantly, I like seeing atypical games prove they can make mad money because it opens the door for more creative ventures.

The "thank you" site also has a word web of the most frequently used words to describe the game in reviews. I was hoping "Dafoe" would dwarf the page. Also, "visual feast" is two words. Come on, man.

17th Pokemon movie based on X & Y, has Mega Evolutions

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST

Pokémon XY: Cocoon of Destruction is releasing July 19, 2014 in Japan. From early information, it seems that the people behind it are going with a kitchen sink approach to capitalize on the wildly popular Pokemon X/Y

Aside from Mega Evolutions being involved, the film will pit X and Y's legendary Pokemon against each other. Both Mewtwo Mega Evolutions also appear on promotional material. According to Japanator, Japanese fans will also be able to vote "for the gift that will accompany advanced ticket purchases. You can choose from Jirachi, Victini, Manaphy, and Darkrai, all of whom will appear in the short before the film, Pikachu, What's This Key For?"

The key Pokemon is the star of the short. I kind of want to see that. The shorts are typically better than the bloated, grandiose, stakes-raising films, anyways.

Mafia developer 2K Czech restructuring, cutting jobs

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 08:45 AM PST

Mafia developer 2K Czech is seeing restructuring, Eurogamer reports. The main Prague office, where it's assumed Mafia 3 development is housed, is being closed down and its inhabitants moved to an office in Brno.

"Additionally," read the 2K statement to Eurogamer, "we are transferring some development resources from Prague and Brno to 2K headquarters in Novato, CA." According to Eurogamer's original source, that included 10 key developers.

Whether the totality of Mafia 3 development has been moved to the US along with the key staff remains to be seen. What we do know, unfortunately, is that, "As part of this realignment, we are adjusting our staffing levels, resulting in the elimination of some positions."

Best of luck to those that are losing their jobs.

Undead Labs signs multi-title agreement with Microsoft

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST

After releasing State of Decay for Xbox 360 and PC, Undead Labs has decided to commit to Microsoft Studios -- the studio has signed a multi-year, multi-title agreement.

"We'll be able to share details later this year, but as with State of Decay, we think it's best if we just keep our heads down and build some prototypes before we talk too much," Undead Labs wrote. "It's been a long haul from the original vision to this point, and the road ahead of us will take years to travel. We hope you're up for the trip, because we can't do it without you."

For all of its flaws, I dug State of Decay and would love to see what Undead is capable of with, say, more time allotted for polish. The concepts are great -- they just need work. That said, consider me officially excited to see what the company does next.

Tres bien! Mitsuru leads this new Persona Q trailer

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 08:15 AM PST

I'm still not convinced I like the 3DS chibi Persona 3 and Persona 4 spin-off, Persona Q. Giving me more Mitsuru-senpai is a good way to convince me, though.

It seems like all the characters will be getting videos as Atlus's YouTube drowns us in Persona Q videos. I could think of worse things to drown in. Like fire. Or pizza rolls. Or syrup. Most things, really.

Review: Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST

Baldur’s Gate II holds a pretty special place in my heart. It was easily my favorite RPG from my younger days, and to be honest not much has changed since. Classic Dungeons & Dragons gameplay combined with wonderful characters and writing is a simple recipe for a timeless classic. Visually, however, this timeless classic has certainly aged.

And so steps in Beamdog with Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition. Just as with the first game, this Enhanced Edition looks slightly better, plays the same, and has some extra goodies added in. Whether or not it’s worth the entry fee is up to you, though.

Hardline 005: PlayStation Now, Alien, 2014's most wanted

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 07:45 AM PST

Refreshed from a lovely holiday break, we're back with another episode of Destructoid's news discussion podcast, Hardline. With the Consumer Electronics Show giving us something to chat about in an otherwise dry month, we couldn't have returned at a better time.

Hamza, Steven, and Conrad spoke with me about Sony's backwards-compatibility solution for PS4, PlayStation Now; the laundry list of Steam Machines shown at CES; Razer's crazy-looking modular PC; the new survival-horror Alien game that sounds shockingly good; Titanfall's 12-player limit; and our most-wanted games of 2014. Among other things.

For the audio-only episode, you can subscribe on iTunes and RSS, or download directly.

Friday Night Fights: Building relationships

Short post will be short today, my apologies in advance.

Happy Friday!

Not much to see here today, I'm currently out chaperoning my daughters class trip to LegoLand. I'm sure I'm having a blast right now, chasing kids around a theme park and generally being worn out.

I hope all of you have a blast tonight playing games with each other, play a few rounds for me!

First look at Turtle Rock's new FPS Evolve

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 07:15 AM PST

Coming from the people who worked on Left 4 Dead, Evolve sounds promising as a multiplayer concept. We've heard about the game's first creature, Goliath (as shown above), who can evolve to grow in size and must take on four hunters, each with their own specialties.

Today, Game Informer posted the first screenshots of the game for non-subscribers and yep, I definitely want to play as the giant alien. It's difficult to get a true sense of what Evolve actually looks like here, so I'm hopeful Turtle Rock Studios won't sit on gameplay footage for too long.

As a fan of multiplayer modes in which each player and/or team has distinct abilities and objectives, Evolve is sounding like it could be the next major game on that front. Unless Valve decides to start talking about Left 4 Dead 3 all of a sudden.

Torchlight II is free on Steam this weekend

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

Torchlight II is still chugging along, and this weekend, you can play it for free on Steam. Said free weekend starts now, and ends on Sunday at 1PM Pacific. I never really got all that into Torchlight II, but it's a really great game, and any dungeon crawler fan owes it to themselves to try it.

Give it a go this weekend, and if you enjoy it, at least grab it on a Steam sale -- you won't regret it. Like, you know, this sale this weekend, where it's 75% off.

3DS game sales were up 45 percent last year

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST

It's clear the 3DS is in its prime, but here's some data to back up that sentiment. According to Nintendo, upwards of 16 million packaged and digital games were sold for 3DS last year, representing a more than 45 percent increase over game sales in 2012.

As for hardware, the handheld has passed 11.5 million units sold in the United States when counting all models, including the 3DS XL and 2DS. Thinking back to the days before Nintendo rolled out a price drop, it's been a long journey, but I'm happy the system has come into its own. Now, if only the Wii U could experience a similar rise.

Review: Zen Pinball 2 (PS4)

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

You've no doubt run into at least one of Zen Studios' pinball platforms by now, appearing on virtually every current device out there that can play games (the only exception being Xbox One as of right now). They hit it big over the years with numerous licensed and original tables such as Star Wars, Marvel, Plants vs. Zombies, Ninja Gaiden, and Street Fighter, with many more surely on their way for 2014.

After landing on the Wii U last year, the PlayStation 4 is the next current-gen system to get the pinball treatment from Zen Studios in the form of Zen Pinball 2. Those who have checked out any past incarnation know what to expect, but newcomers are definitely in for a treat should they jump in -- which they absolutely should.

The Bad Dudes President is not actually American

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 05:45 AM PST

Inspired by a comic from Zac Gorman, the Destructoid staff was chatting about Bad Dudes, the old beat 'em up infamous for its abrupt opening and unsatisfying conclusion (pictured above). Upon inspecting the image more closely though, we had a "cannot unsee" moment. What is the deal with that flag behind him?

As paragons of journalism, we have taken the liberty to provide an artist's rendition (read: something I made in MS Paint) of what the flag behind Bad Dudes President would look like unfurled and flattened. It is certainly no banner I am familiar with.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe shows well in this extensive footage

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST

It's only now hitting me how much I want a proper Kirby on 3DS and Kirby: Triple Deluxe appears to be exactly that. While the game released in North America and Europe yet, it's out now in Japan. Wasting no time, NintenDaan has already uploaded a sizable chunk of footage, covering the opening areas and even versus gameplay towards the end of the video.

I had some idea of what we'd be getting into after the BIG MAN video the other day, but Triple Deluxe has shot up from "I'll play it eventually" to "day-one purchase." The ability to inhale giant obstacles and enemies looks like a ton of fun, due in large part to the exaggerated animations.

Opinion: The Steam Controller deserves a fair shot

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST

I've been playing PC games since the late '80s. Ever since I was old enough to grasp a keyboard I was introduced to PC games by way of my uncle, who was in IT at the time and had access to basically every new piece of technology on the market.

As such, I acclimated myself to mouse and keyboard controls fairly early in my developmental stages, and it's a habit I generally stick to when playing PC games to this day. But not everyone is the same way, and Valve is looking to ease those people into PC gaming with the Steam Controller.

For that, they deserve a fair amount of praise, and a fair chance to prove their point.

Rayman Legends launching early for Xbox One, PS4

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Rayman Legends are releasing earlier than expected, Ubisoft has announced. North America is getting the whimsical platformer on February 18, while Europe will have it on February 21. Pricing, at least on Amazon, is set at $39.99.

The biggest change for the new versions is undoubtedly going to be reduced load times, which were something of a nuisance on last-generation consoles because of the way levels are selected in-game. As detailed before, there's also costumes based on other Ubisoft properties, exclusive challenges on Xbox One, and TouchPad support on PS4.

Presumably, Legends will look especially crisp running on these new systems, but since this is already one of the best-looking games I've ever played, that's less of a big deal.

It's now possible to play Revengeance offline on PC

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST

The PC port of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance launched this week with a few issues, most notably its resolution capping out at 1080p, less-than-ideal mouse controls, and the fact that it wasn't playable offline. Whoops. What was initially thought to be always-online DRM has turned out to be unintentional.

The issue has already been addressed, according to PlatinumGames creative producer JP Kellams. If that alone was holding you back from playing Revengeance, go get this excellent action game. Even with the other problems, PC gamers seem to be eating it up.

I particularly liked this Steam user review: "Throwing a giant robot into a building, then cutting it into a million pieces while epic music plays... 11/10 Would cut again."

Disney Magic World is coming to the 3DS

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 03:30 AM PST

The 3DS is getting another potential cash cow this year, as Namco Bandai is localizing Disney Magic World for the US. This game was previously known as Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life in Japan, and had its own 3DS portable bundle -- so it makes sense that it would come over here eventually. It'll launch on April 11th.

According to the official description, you can customize your avatar with different outfits, as well as manage buildings like cafes, and plant crops. You'll also do some missions for neighbors based on Disney characters.

Sound familiar?

Premium audio brands get into gaming headsets at CES

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST

The business of gaming audio is growing so fast that the makers of many premium audio product brands are throwing their hats into the ring. Several new gaming headsets debuted at CES 2014, with entries from top names like Audio Technica, Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, Klipsch, and Polk. These are all companies that know quality audio, and some are among the top names in headphones. Some of the third-party gaming accessories companies should start watching their backs.

Read on for our quick impressions of these new headsets from CES 2014.

King Dedede joins the Super Smash Bros. cast

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST

The newest Super Smash Bros. 2014 cast member has been confirmed -- and it's none other than Kirby's rival King Dedede. He'll sport his signature hammer once again, and there's plenty of screens showing him in action, as well as one 3DS shot with Zelda and Peach.

I'm a pretty big fan of Dedede, as he's a nice option for players who prefer larger characters. He's also funny looking and makes me laugh occasionally, so there's that. Hopefully we'll get some more solid news on the full Smash Bros. release date sooner than later.

Oculus Rift makes a huge leap with Crystal Cove prototype

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST

We've been following Oculus Rift since its very beginnings. We were honored to be one of the first to play with one of the earliest prototypes, demonstrated by none other than John Carmack himself. Last year's CES was Oculus' big debut, though. We've seen it at every showing they've brought it to since, and we like it more every time we see it.

It's been really nice to see how Oculus Rift has changed along the last year and a half or so, as it really does get better every time. This latest version that they brought to CES 2014, codenamed Crystal Cove,  takes big steps foward with its new parts, which includes new top-of-the-line OLED screens, positional tracking, and low persistence technology. All of this comes together to bring us that much closer to that virtual reality holodeck dream we all have.

Rupert Friend recast as star of the new Hitman film

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST

A second film based on the Hitman franchise was all set to debut with Paul Walker, until his untimely passing in November of 2013. Despite that, Variety reports that the movie is still moving forward, recasting actor Rupert Friend. Friend is best known from Showtime's Homeland series, where he plays an unconventional CIA operative.

The film was almost canceled after the loss of Walker, but 20th Century Fox apparently decided to go through with it because of the game's popularity overseas. This iteration will be a reboot rather than a full sequel, completely replacing the original's framework from the ground up.

Yoshi's New Island gets a March release date

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 12:30 AM PST

Nintendo has confirmed the release date for Yoshi's New Island -- March 14th, 2013. The game is being developed with Takashi Tezuka on staff, who was the creative director of the original game. Yoshi and Baby Mario will return for another adventure, along with the classic flutter jump move eggs, and "some new actions" only on the 3DS.

I'm not completely sold on this yet because I feel like Nintendo hasn't shown anything particularly spectacular on it, but as a massive Yoshi's Island fan, I'm eager to see what it can bring to the table.

That Robocop mobile game is out now on iOS, for free

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST

A mobile tie-in for the new Robocop movie is happening, and it launched today on the iOS App Store. It's free-to-play, but Android users will have to wait until January 15th to pick it up. The funny thing is, as much as you'd expect it to be terrible, it's actually a decent cover shooter in the same style as Virtua Cop.

It's very simplistic and basically consists of touch the right side of the screen to "pop out" of cover and aim, but it gets the job done. It's just loaded with currency based IAP (in-app-purchases) and an energy system. In other words -- if all of the microtransactions were stripped, I would probably buy it for a dollar.

MAGFest = WIN is chiptuney goodness for your ears

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST

This past weekend in Maryland's National Harbor, around 1,500 like-minded individuals gathered for the 12th annual Music and Gaming Festival, AKA MAGFest. This was only my second year attending, but man it was a blast. Tons of games, events, panels, and of course, videogame music.

This year, there was a huge chiptune representation at the festival, and to commemorate it, Chiptunes = WIN released an exclusive compilation featuring the artists performing at MAGfest 12. The album, MAGFest = WIN, released at a listening party at MAGfest, features exclusive mixes from some of my favorite artists such as Danimal Cannon, RobotSexMusic, and fellow Baltimorean Inverse Phase.

As always, it's an excellent representation of some of the best artists in the scene, and worth your ear time, especially as it's expertly mastered by DJ Cutman. If you weren't able to make it to the 'fest this year, just Colossus scream while listening to this awesome compilation.

Angry Birds with men instead of birds and pigs

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 09:00 PM PST

As the guy who does the editing for our Huge News of the Week program, I'm not really in the best position to be making comments about how stupid gaming-related video content can be. Anybody who has seen my work there would be able to completely disregard any complaints I have.

With that concession out of the way, this is the dumbest thing I've seen on the internet today. It's a live-action interpretation of Angry Birds, with strange, grunting men taking the place of the game's birds and pigs. You're welcome.

Robotoki president thwarts attempted office robbery

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST

"These two men attempted to rob robotoki tonight, unfortunately for them, I work late," Robotoki president and former Infinity Ward lead Robert Bowling posted to Twitter last night. With the tweet was this Instagram video showing an alleged attempted break in and Bowling bowling down the stairs to shoo the men away.

The independent Robotoki is still working on its first game, Human Element, which is slated for 2015 release.

Bowling's "unfortunately for them, I work late," was pretty cool. But could it have been better? What if he just yelled, "Chill out" in an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice? Or, to the attempted robbers, "You just got Rob'd!" Yeah, I like that one. Still, good job, Rob.
