Huge News of the Week: Tell tales of Cranky Joel McHale Posted: 08 Dec 2013 01:15 PM PST On this week's game show-themed episode of DH Not W, we discover the pizza panic button, answer a question from Occams Electric Toothbrush, offer commentary and information on all the biggest news to come out of last night's VGX awards show, and make our best guess on what's the last thing you'd ever want to say to your Dad. As if that wasn't enough, Caitlin Cooke will wrap and recap the reviews of the week just for you, while Jonathan beats up a box in the background. You've got to feel it. It's electric. If you love, hate, or "whatever" the show, please drop us a line at HolmesSupHolmes@gmail.com with your questions and comments. We're also toying with the idea of an end of the year awards special, with nominees determined by the viewers, so be sure to send us any idea you have in that arena. We promise to read them all.

It's been a long time coming, but it's finally happening. Those located in North America will be able to purchase the indie sandbox title on December 17, with those in Europe having it available to them a bit sooner on December 11. Terraria for Vita Release Dates Confirmed! [Terraria Online] |
Posted: 08 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST Welcome one and all, to the wildest show of all, the Rad Show. Tonight we're gonna jump into Project Zomboid. Yeah, it's a Zombie Survival game, but it's pretty bad ass. And I only play Bad ass games with shirtless men who occasionally get cold so I put a blouse on them to keep them warm and more manly as we fight to live.

The Assassin's Creed IV artbook is beautiful Posted: 08 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST Black Flag was quite the Assassin's Creed game. Scratch that -- it was quite the pirate simulator, that often times made us forget that it was part of the up and down franchise that so many people have given up on over the years. Sailing about looking at the gorgeous vistas and shores of Assassin's Creed IV while your crew sang endearing shanties was something special, and the art team captured that essence quite well with the official artbook.
Here are the worst games you played this year Posted: 08 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST Last week, I asked you to share your stories about the worst new games you played all year. I am so sorry I asked.
Sup Holmes is super with combo man Justin Woodward Posted: 08 Dec 2013 06:45 AM PST This week on Sup Holmes we continue Adult Swimember with Justing Woodward of Interabang Entertainment. Justin's worked in the industry for years, but it probably best known for Super Comboman, the 2D action platformer with beautiful hand-drawn artwork and an adherence to the violent, fluid, combat fundamentals that made games like Viewtiful Joe and Super Smash Bros. so great. The game made a huge splash at EVO this year, which bodes well for its future. We'll be taking to Justin about what drove the development Super Comboman, the risks of casting an adorable fat man as your protagonist, the pros and cons of Kickstarter, what it takes to keep 2D brawlers relevant in today's market, and a lot more. Join us at 1pm PST/4pm EST for the whole show!
Review: Assassin's Creed: Pirates Posted: 08 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST When Black Flag was first announced, it never really hit me at how great an open-world pirate game could really be. Since so many past iterations were comfortable with walling off players in mini-sandboxes rather than letting them run free, Assassin's Creed IV really scratched that itch so many people had been longing for. The mobile spinoff Assassin's Creed: Pirates doesn't offer that same sense of freedom, but it captures the essence of sailing around causing general debauchery just fine. You'll spend the entire game in your ship, but if you loved that aspect of Assassin's Creed IV, you're probably going to like Pirates.
Tearaway gets a promotional faux-children's show in Japan Posted: 08 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST A lot of people assume that anything cute and weird is bound to sell well in Japan. Like most generalizations about cultural preferences, that assumption doesn't always hold up. Despite being arguably the cutest, weirdest series Sony has put out in the past ten years, Loco Roco didn't manage to sell all that well in its home country. I'd imagine that Tearaway may suffer similar struggles. Not only is it in the Vita (which is still facing its share of install base problems) but it's cute and weird in a way that feels quite new and unfamiliar. That makes it appealing to some, but a tough sell for others. Maybe this promotional video will help the game to find its audience. It's all in Japanese, but don't let that stop you from experiencing it. The image of a well-meaning man with bad teeth sticking his butt out while talking to a young woman about videogames speaks a universal language that you're sure to understand. So, uh, here’s how Tearaway is being promoted in Japan [Tiny Cartridge]
Puzzle platformer Dokuro hits Google Play and iTunes Posted: 08 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST Late last year a modest platformer named Dokuro hit the PlayStation Vita, giving it a much needed boost in a rather dry period for the portable. It was a beautiful but flawed game, making it hard to recommend at the full price it was offered for on the PSN. But flash forward to this week, and that same title has launched on the Google Play and iTunes marketplaces at the introductory price of $0.99. At that price the game is an absolute steal, and pretty much everyone can play it now -- Vita or not. It'll revert to its standard price of $2.99 in January.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt keeps looking better and better Posted: 08 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST CD Projekt RED's open-world expedition, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, is easily at the top of my most anticipated games of 2014 list (sorry Titan Fall) and the latest trailer shown off during last night's VGX show only has me even more hyped. If that is indeed possible Not too much is spoiled in the video, but the snippets of open-world horseback riding, the beautiful environments (such a splendid windmill), and the glimpses of heavenly animated combat are enough to begin salivating for one of the first of this new current generations RPGs. Now when do we get to see Geralt's, how should I put it, womanizing ways?
Here it is, the MAGFest main stage line-up Posted: 08 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST In 24 days I'll be piling into a car with some other Midwest Destructoid members and heading to MAGFest! Now that we have the full line-up, I don't even know where I want to start when I get there. Wait, with booze. I'll start with booze. Here's what's up so you can plan accordingly: Thursday Night Main Stage (6PM - 12AM) Friday Night Main Stage (6PM - 12AM) Saturday Night Main Stage (6PM - 12AM) Don't forget about all the chiptunes and DJ's that will be there, as well as the second stage and the MAGFest Prom! If you're going this year be sure to let us know: there's a reason the folks at MAGFest think as highly of us as we do of them, and trust me when I say you want to be a part of the fun! Sound off in the comments if you're attending so I can get your names tattooed on my body Memento style. I don't want to forget anybody!
Quantum Break maxes out on painful time troubles Posted: 08 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST The next big thing from Remedy is not an "immersive" iPad game about telling ships where to sail. It's Quantum Break, a game that looks to combine everything Remedy has learned from developing games like Alan Wake and Max Payne into one big action/drama/sci-fi epic. If you haven't been impressed with "next gen" graphics until now, this is one of the games that may change your mind, as the level of detail in character models, animation, and environments is staggering. The game's time-stopping hook seems to in part be an excuse to have the player stop focusing on what they're doing and just take in the visuals. It's hard to say how much all those extra details will matter when you're busying running around and shooting stuff. There's a few goofy time glitches in the background during Creative Director Sam Lake's explanation of the game. It will be interesting to see if they end up meaning anything.
Here are your VGX 2013 award winners Posted: 08 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST Another year, another VGA's... err excuse me, I mean VGX award show. This year's show switched up the format, but for the most part delivered the same experience. I was only able to catch a little bit of the show, but I did enjoy watching Joel McHale pressuring Geoff Keighley into sharing one game he was actually looking forward to that wasn't part of the show. The dig about buying him more layers of clothing if he'd share was for sure my highlight. So what did everyone else think of the show? Was the format better? Did the games you want win? Were there any surprises? Do you even really care?
