Watch Thomas the Tank Engine terrorize Skyrim Posted: 07 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST That cold, dead look in his eyes as he relentlessly attacks the village; that menacing bellow as he terrorizes the sky; the unforgiving nature of his assault. The legends are true.
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition coming to PS4, Xbox One Posted: 07 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is coming to PS4 and Xbox One on January 28, 2014. The Definitive Edition has been "custom built" for the next gen consoles and includes all of the original DLC, digital versions of the Dark Horse comic, a mini art book, and a developer video. Those who pre-order will receive "special art book packaging featuring never-before-seen concept art." It's a nice package for console owners who want to play Tomb Raider in its technical glory -- if you need textures at 4x native resolution or want to play in 1080p (even on the Xbox One, apparently), but it's sort of disappointing to ponder, "Is this what next gen means?" Games from last generation rebuilt to look prettier? And sold at $60 when Tomb Raider for PC, which is very pretty, is on sale on Steam right now for $10? It's hard not to wonder if Tomb Raider not meeting sales expectations is the reason behind this release. Get some more money from the first product while working on the sequel. The sequel that would have proved a much more exciting announcement.
Knytt Underground comes to the Wii U December 19 Posted: 07 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST NightSky was a perfect fit for Nintendo consoles. The game felt like one big, surreal Metroid morph ball adventure. The same could be said for Knytt Undergound, another dreamlike, ball-focused platformer from Nicklas Nygren. The game was released on PS3/Vita. PC, Linux and Mac last year, but it was largely lost in the shuffle. Hopefully its Wii U release will get more attention. Seems like it could be perfect fit, seeing as many Nintendo fans are likely wrapping up Super Mario 3D World and Legend of Zelda: A Link to Two Worlds and are looking for something new. It's probably as close as to a new Metroid game as we're going to get for a while. Knytt Underground comes to the Wii U eShop on December 19 with new "Infinite Hype" content and "new graphical effects and flourishes." Knytt Underground is 'best-looking' on Wii U; coming before the holidays [Game Zone]
Explore the stars in Hello Games' No Man's Sky Posted: 07 Dec 2013 10:56 AM PST The makers of Joe Danger are back with a completely different type of game. No Man's Sky is a procedural exploration title that debuted at the Spike VGX awards. It looks freakin' incredible. Hello Games' Sean Murray dropped by to chat about the project. It will always be presented in first-person, and if you see a mountain, you can go to it. Kind of neat. But if you see another planet, you can hop in your ship and go to that too, and the same goes for stars in the sky at nighttime -- those are real and can be traveled to. Murray says there's combat in space and on individual planets, and although No Man's Sky is being described as exploratory, it's not just wandering about passively. Planets have an ecosystem and you're not necessarily at the top of the food chain. Also, it would seem that players are "in the same universe and there is persistence there." Crazy!
Telltale officially announces Game of Thrones Posted: 07 Dec 2013 10:45 AM PST Hot on the heels of its Tales from the Borderlands announcement, Telltale got back on this year's VGX to show a brief teaser trailer announcing another property it is working on: Game of Thrones. Talking with Geoff Keighley and Joel McHale, Telltale revealed that it would be based on the HBO show rather than straight from the book series. Mentioned in the interview was that Game of Thrones would feature traditional Telltale adventure gameplay, but also include massive infantry battles in some capacity. Another notable point of the discussion was the focus on characters' personal stories, though Telltale did not reveal which characters would take center stage.
Elijah Wood joins the Broken Age voice cast Posted: 07 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST We're strapped in for this whole VGX thing and oddly enough, one of the better parts has been an extended look at Broken Age, Double Fine's Kickstarter-funded adventure game. CEO Tim Schafer stopped by to reveal another voice actor for the game, Elijah Wood. Guys, he brought Rice Krispy Treats. Guys! His character, Shay, is one of the two protagonists in Broken Age. He's stuck in a sapceship with an overprotective computer, longing to escape for a more fulfilling life. Beyond Wood, Wil Wheaton, Pendleton Ward, and Jack Black are among those who have lent their voices to the game.
The best and worst games of the week - Racing Royalty Posted: 07 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST Oh December! You are by far my favorite month of the year, and not just because it's Christmas and my birthday. Your winter slumber in the games department allows me the leisure of checking my backlog list twice and knocking off some of those naughty titles I've been neglecting. I'm not sure how the rest of the month is going to pan out for you, but you did deliver us another phenomenal racing title with Sony's Gran Turismo 6. And I'm really not sure how any one human can handle this, Need for Speed: Rivals, F1 2013, and Forza 5... but we all know Destructoid's racing guru, Mr. Dale "don't call me Peter" North has been gunning it full throttle the last few months. I think it's time for cruise control. Now on to the week in reviews!
Nintendo confirms Cranky Kong for DKC: Tropical Freeze Posted: 07 Dec 2013 09:45 AM PST Meaty Nintendo executive Reggie Fils-Aime made an appearance tonight on Spike TV's VGX awards show to confirm Cranky Kong will be the fourth playable character in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. The elder statesman of the Kong clan gets around with the help of a cane, which allows him to perform a unique pogo move akin to Scrooge McDuck in DuckTales. The walking stick allows him to jump higher as well as traverse spiked terrain without taking damage. Nintendo also clarified when we'll be able to get our hands on the title, announcing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will bounce to Wii U on February 21, 2014.
Telltale, Gearbox team up for Tales from the Borderlands Posted: 07 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST For the first reveal of this year's VGX, a Telltale logo showed up on a vending machine, with very Telltale-esque cel-shading. Not so Telltale was the music, which was clearly a Borderlands guitar riff. Yep, Telltale is making an adventure game set in the Borderlands universe. Considering the great work that Telltale has done recently with The Walking Dead and A Wolf Among Us, this could turn out to be a pretty fitting collaboration. The goofy, brutal world of Pandora could be a great fit for an adventure game. In the reveal trailer, two new characters were shown, but all we know about them is that they are not Vault Hunters like the typical Borderlands protagonists. That, and that Handsome Jack wants to kill them, of course.
Posted: 07 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST Watch VGX here! Highlights tonight include some world premieres as well as new news on games like Titanfall, The Witcher 3, Quantum Break, and more. Joel McHale is hosting, and even Reggie Fils-Aime will show up with his cute little face. You can watch this, or, better yet, watch our drunken stream-along. Double fist with two browser windows, even. I'm a VGX council member, but I picked all the good games, so don't get pissed at me if your favs don't win.
Heroes of Dragon Age launches on Android and iOS Posted: 07 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST Remember Heroes of Dragon Age, that upcoming free-to-play title for Android and iOS EA announced back in August? Don't worry, I didn't either. Well, it's out now. The spin-off title focuses around players collecting characters from the Dragon Age franchise and building a team in order to tackle groups of enemies -- players can also compete against others online. To acquire more heroes, you can either use gold coins (which you get from winning battles) or blue gems to purchase specific packs -- funnily enough, these 'packs' only contain one hero in each. Blue gems are much harder to come by than coins, but don't worry because EA are letting players purchase them using real money. In fact, EA are so considerate that they've included an option to buy $99.99 worth of these gems in one go. Cheers, EA! Anyone given Heroes of Dragon Age a go yet? What do you make of it so far?
Impressions: Assault Android Cactus (PC) Posted: 07 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST Assault Android Cactus has been gaining some momentum in the gaming community lately -- mostly because it's yet another title to join the ranks of supporting the Wii U. It also helps that it sports an incredibly cool-looking art style, and promises of hardcore gameplay to boot. I got a chance to play the Early Access build, and I have to say, as a hardcore shoot-'em-up fan -- I can't wait for the final version.
| Sony: PS4 could significantly exceed PS3 lifetime sales Posted: 07 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have each sold in excess of 80 million units worldwide to date. For Microsoft, reeling off the GameCubian sales of the original Xbox, that's good. Somewhere in a galaxy far, far away Master Chief is doing a little jig. Or twerking. Yeah, that's the ticket. Sony, on the other hand, is probably not quite as stoked about that figure. Despite producing a lovely piece of machinery, the company failed to replicate the runaway success of the PS2. But that was last generation, and Sony is looking to the future. Speaking with MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment president and Group CEO Andrew House says PS4 aims to outsell PS3. "It has an opportunity to significantly exceed what we've been able to achieve with PS3 and there's a couple of reasons for that," House told MCV. "We start off with a price point that is much more consumer friendly than was there for the PS3." "Also, one of the success stories for the business as a whole has been our ability to open up new geographies for video games over the last five years. You are seeing opportunities for new markets that we haven't tapped into," House said, adding the device's full suite of non-game entertainment services would be "crucial in broadening what the console’s reach." While House noted that this is a marathon, rather than a sprint, the PS4 seems to be off to a good start with over 2.1 million sales across the Americas and Europe. | Konami is demanding that Lab Zero Games remove Skullgirls Posted: 07 Dec 2013 06:34 AM PST [Update: Ravidrath of Lab Zero Games has added a bit of clarification to the situation.] Last night on the Salty Cupcakes 'cast, Skullgirls lead Mike Z dropped a bomb on the fighting game community -- their console publisher, Konami, wants Skullgirls to be removed from the PSN and Xbox Live Arcade almost immediately (December 17th for PSN and 31st for XBLA). This came as a shock to Mike Z and the team, who basically had no idea this was coming. In response, developer Lab Zero is planning on making a brand new build for consoles with Squigly in tow, under a new publisher, Autumn Games. The Japanese release isn't affected (as it's handled by CyberFront), but it is entirely possible that Skullgirls will disappear entirely on consoles in other regions until sometime in 2014. For now, it appears as if the PC version published by Marvelous AQL is completely stable, but I hope that the team lands on their feet, and can get a new console version up as soon as possible. For clarification, if you already own Skullgirls, you can still play it even if Lab Zero isn't able to solve the problem. Support for online play however, is up in the air at this time, and non-owners will not be able to buy the game after those dates. Skullgirls Weekly Stream @ UGC 12/6 [Salty Cupcakes] |
| Mega Man feels the beat in Sound Rangers: Rhythm & Battle Posted: 07 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST When the late, great Tony Ponce wrote his heartfelt goodbye letter to Mega Man, I came at him like a know-it-all jerk, stating that there was no way that Mega Man series was "finished." With Inafune gone, I predicted that Mega Man was destined for a "hardcore" reinvention in the next ten years, with tons of cheap mobile throwaway games to come in the meantime. Capcom may not care about Mega Man, but they do care about money, and there is plenty of money still to be squeezed from one of their most marketable, recognizable characters. Sadly, I was right on at least some of that. Here we have yet another low-budget iPhone game featuring Mega Man. That's not to say the game couldn't be fun. Sound Rangers: Rhythm and Battle likely does a fine job of meeting its goals. The game is free to play, so if you want to set up a Japanese iPhone account, you can check it out for yourself. It will be interesting to see if Capcom will continue utilize Mega Man exclusively as a spokesman for shallow-but-accessible mobile titles, or if he'll get that "hardcore" reboot I predicted at some point as well. | Fire Emblem rides into Monster Hunter Frontier G Posted: 07 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST Fire Emblem: Awakening is Nintendo resident tough-as-nails, patience testing magic-and-fantasy 3DS title. Monster Hunter is Capcom's resident tough-as-nails, patience testing club-a-dinosaur game franchise. Putting them together seems like match made in "most people wont give a f*ck but a few hundred thousand people are going to freak out" heaven. Sadly, quite a few of those people likely live outside of Japan, and will miss out on this delightful Fire Emblem content for the Wii U port of Monster Hunter Frontier G. We can hope that the same content will make it over to Monster Hunter 4, and that Monster Hunter 4 makes its way across the ocean one of these days. | Pre-orders open for Street Fighter Deck-Building game Posted: 07 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST Taking it from the streets to the table, Cryptozoic Entertainment is now accepting pre-orders for its upcoming Street Fighter deck-building card game. Anticipated for release February 2014, the two-to-five player game pits classic Street Fighter heroes and villains against each other in the effort of becoming the "World's Best." Along the way to victory, player's fighters (classics like Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and M. Bison) will gain allies and equipment, along with powerful new moves to defeat as many stage bosses as possible -- that is according to the game's official description. The game will cost $40 and, for a limited time, those who pre-order will receive a Blanka Promo card pack. |

Wil Wheaton joins the cast of Double Fine's Broken Age Posted: 07 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST The man who has forever cast a dark stigma on my name, Wil Wheaton, has joined the cast of Double Fine's upcoming point-and-click adventure game Broken Age. Picking up the axe as Cutis the Lumberjack, a character brought back to the game largely in part from fan feedback on the game's forums, the video above gives a sneak peak at just what kind of paranoid wood chopper Wheaton's character is going to be. The video also teases another surprise voice actor for the game, which should be announced today during VGX 2013, where Double Fine will be showing off live game footage. Will it be Nathan Fillion as Wheaton jokes at the end of the video? I'd be down with that.
Fan translation brings Ys 5 into English Posted: 07 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST While many of you may be enjoying the latest Ys title to land stateside, Ys: Memories of Celceta on the PS Vita, one title in the series had yet to see any sort of English adaptation. That is until now. Thanks to the team of fan translators over at Aeon Genesis, Ys V has finally been localized and patched for English consumption. The original Super Nintendo exclusive debuted in Japan in 1995 and was a slight departure in terms of gameplay from its predecessors. For starters the game ditched the super-deformed proportions of early titles in favor of a more realistic (well for SNES standards) version of series protagonist Adol Christin. The battle system was also altered from the enemy ramming tactics to something more along the lines of The Legend of Zelda. Adol could additionally jump too, which brought in some slight platforming elements to the adventure. Details on how to play this fan patched translation can be found over at Aeon Genesis.
Fallout 4 teaser site was just a brilliant hoax Posted: 06 Dec 2013 05:30 PM PST The weird website thesurvivor2299.com seemed to be leading up to an announcement for Fallout 4, but now the site just has a video of a sad violin. Bethesda already said that they weren't going to be showing anything new at VGX, but they didn't come right out and say the site was fake. Beneath the sad violin video the site has the message "Special thanks to /r/Fallout the most amazing community on reddit. PSA: YT User 'Elevated Level', Butch, Pitor, Liam Neeson and creator of tunnelsnakesrule.com are not responsible for this 'hoax/rickroll'. Ah, and thepropheteer.com is a fake too (Still thumbs up for this guy it looks great!). Don't hate bethesda, hate me. That's all. I really hope you'll get a real Fallout 4 soon, guys. PPS To real haters: if you really wish me dead IRL, go here . Otherwise, if you're pissed off/hate me, then see you and remember to watch VGX!."
