Bohemia is giving out 500,000 to Arma 3 modders Posted: 06 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST "Make Arma Not War" is the name of an upcoming Bohemia Interactive contest which should greatly help incentivize community-led content creation for Arma 3. The studio is giving out €500,000 in prize money and here's the kicker: "Projects which show a lot of potential might also be offered a contract by Bohemia Interactive, whether they have won the contest or not." Potentially the start of someone's career, in other words. The competition spans four categories -- single-player, multiplayer, add-on, and total modification -- with the top prize of €200,000 going to that last category. The other three will have the prize pool divided up into first (€50,000), second (€30,000), and third place (€20,000). Interested parties can begin working on their projects, but applications for Make Arma Not War won't be accepted until next year. Submissions are due by October 28, 2014, and the winners will be announced on January 15, 2015. This contest is exactly the type of thing I'd expect Bohemia to do -- hope it works out for them, content creators, and players.

Joel McHale to co-host VGX with Geoff Keighley Posted: 06 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST Spike has announced the hosting lineup for Saturday's VGX awards show, in which Geoff Keighley will be joined by The Soup and Community star Joel McHale. As if it hasn't been difficult enough to take this awards program seriously. From corporate sponsored categories, to the overall trailer-to-award-presentation ratio, to the insipid "Binge Responsibly" tagline (a phrase so contradictory and unfunny at face value that I assumed it was a joke Max Scoville came up with), it seems hard to imagine the producers capable of creating a more vapid way of honoring games. But bringing on a host whose career is literally built on of a foundation of sarcasm? That's the cherry. It's as if they are begging people to completely disregard any pretense toward recognizing excellence in gaming, perhaps as part of an overall strategy to eventually just have the show become a solid block of advertisements.

'StreetPass Weekend' is a thing happening soon Posted: 06 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST Nintendo has informed us that National StreetPass Weekend is happening on December 14 and 15 and yes, this is a serious holiday. While I'm content sticking to StreetPassing each year during PAX and calling it a day, this should be a nice little treat for more dedicated players. The North American Nintendo Zones (find yours here) will be mixed about, meaning you'll have the opportunity to interact with folks from other areas. Those dancing Miis at 0:30 suggest that good times will be had by all who participate. Nintendo in the YouTube age sure is a sight to behold.

So far away: Destiny launches September 9, 2014 Posted: 06 Dec 2013 10:40 AM PST Bungie is releasing its next shooter, Destiny, on September 9, 2014 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4. Is that far enough removed from Titanfall's debut in March? Not that we can't have and enjoy both games, which will probably be the case for many of us. Sometime this summer, the beta for Destiny will go live and it's coming to Sony consoles first, according to the company. I'm now thinking back to the first we heard about the game officially, which was a bunch of promises and some miscellaneous concept art back in February. I know it's hard to keep quiet when excitement runs rampant, but jeez! This promotional cycle is a bit much. Destiny Launch Date [Bungie]

Here are your favorite new characters from 2013! Posted: 06 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST Earlier in the week we asked you to sound off on your favorite new videogame characters in 2013. Here are the results! From cartoon characters to muscular senators to a young woman who just will not stop dancing, a wide range of new characters were represented from just about every genre imaginable (no farming simulators this time, sadly). Hell, most of them weren't even unshaven white men with gruff voices! Most of them, anyway. Read more... |
Live show: Casual Killer Instinct sparring Posted: 06 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] In case you didn't know, for quite some time now every Friday night, a ton of amazing Dtoid community members have been getting together for multiplayer gaming shenanigans that we like to call Friday Night Fights. As well, over on Mash Tactics, we join in on the festivities each week and play games with the live crowd. You should totally check it out and join in! This week, we'll be hanging out and rocking a few rounds of the new Killer Instinct. Now, while I love the game, I'm still new to it, and still kind of suck, so don't expect some sort of high-level gameplay here. What you can expect however, is a few hours of some friends casually beating the snot out of each other over a couple beers. You know, typical Friday night stuff. Here's how combat will work in The Banner Saga Posted: 06 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST So we've seen about how the travel system works in the upcoming title The Banner Saga but now we've got a good look at how the turn-based combat will work. Whilst turn-based on a grid isn't a new mechanic it's good to see how stats will affect the way your viking warriors will bash each others' heads in. I love how you see a battle unfolding in an ale house, with people standing around holding their pints watching these massive guys smash each other. Like a typical pub fight. Combat will either take place in one of two forms: a battle or a war. The former is a small skirmish involving six of your heroes and the latter is a conflict between larger groups. Armour, Strength, Willpower, Exertion, and Break are all stats that must be juggled to maximize your heroes' abilities during a battle. Whilst it all looks fairly overwhelming in this short trailer, I didn't find the combat too hard to get to grips with in the free multiplayer variant The Banner Saga: Factions. Hopefully there's a bit more depth in the single-player campaign.

Ubisoft survey gauges interest in non-AC pirate game Posted: 06 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST IGN has gotten its hands on a Ubisoft survey that covers what players want out of the future of the Assassin's Creed series. More interesting than that, however, is talk of a theoretical non-AC pirate game, with questions about what elements we'd want in such a title. One of the choices is indeed cooperative and competitive multiplayer naval combat, which was sadly absent from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, as well as a deeper economy or a customizable character, ship, and pirate hideout. Yes, Ubisoft, we want this. You can't turn back the clock and make Black Flag its own standalone IP, but this is the next best thing. Going back to the next installment of Assassin's Creed, there's the obligatory question about interest level in a new present-day hero character. What's the verdict? Eldritch expanding to The Mountains of Madness Posted: 06 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST The endlessly creepy Eldritch will receive a free expansion later this month entitled "Mountains of Madness," based upon an H.P. Lovecraft serial of similar name. The original story describes an Antarctic expedition which meets with disaster upon the discovery of a lost city once inhabited by a forgotten and terrible race of beings. It also features six-foot tall penguins, the thought of which is almost as frightening as the Elder Things themselves, and the above teaser trailer confirms their presence in the expansion. I really love Eldritch, unforgiving and cruel as it can be sometimes. I've still yet to have circumstances align themselves in such a way as I can actually complete the game, but the challenge it presents is so satisfying that I barely notice my failures before I've set off on another attempt. More of this is a good thing. Mountains of Madness will release on December 19.

Here are your most hated new characters of the year Posted: 06 Dec 2013 08:15 AM PST Earlier this week, we asked you to share your thoughts on the WORST new videogame characters of 2013. Here are the results! Many of you took this opportunity to vent your frustrations (or at least upvote or downvote comments) regarding DmC's Dante, which is neat. Other than that obvious choice, there were quite a few other nominees for the wall of shame, and some that I certainly didn't expect! Read more... |
Hardline 002: Backwards compatibility, Fallout, and more Posted: 06 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST On this week's installment of Hardline, Destructoid's new podcast about the week's gaming news and whatever else happens to be on our minds (in this case, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's sweaty body), I'm once again joined by Steven Hansen and we also got Conrad Zimmerman to fill in for Dale and Hamza. There wasn't a whole lot of captivating "news," but no matter -- this is more of an informal discussion show than an outlet with which to deliver timely facts. That said, we chatted about a few topics, including: the PlayStation 4's far-off backwards compatibility via Gaikai cloud streaming, what we would want in a possible Fallout 4, that list of developers who will be self-publishing on Xbox One, and the best / worst characters of the year. For the audio-only episode, you can subscribe on iTunes and RSS, or download directly. We also stream Hardline live via Twitch on Wednesdays at 11:00am Pacific, so be sure to stop by if you'd like to participate in chat while we record!

Friday Night Fights: Win Defense Technica Posted: 06 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST Contest time! All you have to do is leave a comment below, that's it. You don't have to make it about anything specific. You don't have to create a poem or limerick. And you don't have to film yourself doing something absolutely stupid (although if you would like to film yourself doing something stupid, I won't stop you.). The contest will run throughout the night and 15 random people will be sent codes. Easy enough right? In the meantime, check out the games being hosted below. New screenshots for Guilty Gear Xrd show off the insanity Posted: 06 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST There's been a lot of buzz lately regarding the new fighter from Arc System Works. With several location tests going in Japan, fans are already getting some quality time with the title. Recently, we saw the return of Zato=One and the reveal of the brand new character, Bedman, who seems to be a homage to the underrated anime movie Roujin-Z. All in all, Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign looks to keep the series tradition of hyper stylized action and craziness going. Over the last few months on the official GGXrd site, the developers have been gradually revealing more of the roster. As of now, the current lineup is Sol Badbuy, Ky Kiske, Chipp Zanuff, Millia Rage, Slayer, May, Potemkin, Axl Low, I-No, Venom, Faust, Zato=One, and the brand new character Bedman. It's a pretty good set of characters so far, and we've got many more to look forward to. To coincide with the reveal of the new characters, we've got a batch of new screenshots showing off the action. So check 'em out, and marvel at the beauty of Guilty Gear's new visuals. I'm still having a hard time remembering this a 3D game. Read more... |
Save on VGX nominees in this Steam sale Posted: 06 Dec 2013 06:45 AM PST Tomorrow at 3:00pm Pacific marks that time of the year when a bunch of people share their opinions about Spike's game awards show on Twitter. A few of us here at Destructoid will also be partaking in a related ritual -- watching the festivities while inebriated. If it's purely the games you're interested in, here's an interesting little development. Steam has discounted VGX nominees, including Papers, Please ($4.99), Divekick ($4.99), Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition ($24.99), Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons ($7.49), Rayman Legends ($19.99), Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep ($6.69), and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon ($5.09). There's even an embed of the show's live stream, which suggests ... I don't know. Maybe nothing at all? It's been a while since we've had a big Valve game announcement.

Happy birthday Iwata, Pachter thinks you should be fired Posted: 06 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST Today is Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's 54th birthday. Happy birthday Mr. Iwata; Michael Pachter thinks you should be out of the job. The Wedbush Securities analyst continued his fire and brimstone sermon at Game Monetization USA Summit in San Francisco this week, once again spelling doom and gloom for the Wii U and spitting forth toothed remarks, as he is wont to do, like "I don't know why Iwata is still employed." Pachter argues that Nintendo is missing out on a huge opportunity. The soothsayer advocates porting Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles to mobile phones and tablets, which he believes will yield massive profits and draw millions of new fans to its systems. The silver-tongued prophet also called the Wii U's performance "underwhelming" and thinks even an exciting software lineup is unlikely to reverse the machine's fortunes. Looking into his crystal ball, Pachter envisions the Wii U selling 30 million units over its lifetime, with the PlayStation 4 moving between 100 and 120 million consoles, and the Xbox One coming in between the 90 and 110 million mark. Meanwhile, the Nintendo 3DS continues to print money. But, yes, let's focus on the Wii U. Pachter: 'I don't know why Iwata is still employed' [GamesIndustry International]

The Wolf Among Us episode two 'close to completion' Posted: 06 Dec 2013 06:15 AM PST At first, I felt bad for holding off on playing The Wolf Among Us until the first season was finished. It's required some serious restraint, but seeing how long it's taking Telltale to put out the next chapter has me feeling okay about my decision. In a progress update, the studio wrote that episode two, Smoke & Mirrors, is close to being completed. "We wanted to thank everyone for playing the first chapter in The Wolf Among Us, and ask for your patience as the team works very hard this month to finalize what is shaping up to be another episode full of surprises. We're anticipating another update on its ETA for release very soon after the holidays, and we couldn't be more excited to continue this series with all of you." In the mean time, there's a pair of new screenshots. The one above shows Jack Horner from "Jack and the Beanstalk," and the one in the gallery below has a shot of the club Pudding & Pie. What were your favorite gaming moments of 2013? Posted: 06 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST [All week long we've been asking for your thoughts on certain topics related to the year in gaming. Here's the final call for entries!] 2013 has been an amazing year for gaming. Hell, we've reviewed more 9.5s and 10s in the past three months alone than I think I've ever seen in all my time here. And it's not because we're getting soft in our old age; rather, this year's games have just been that good. I already shared my favorite gaming memory of the year in our PS3 farewell post, but it's worth repeating. The game was The Last of Us, and the moment was when Joel and Ellie [SPOILERS] first make it to the university and a tower of giraffes pass by them. Joel, Ellie and I stood and watched those giraffes lumber their way out of view for what seemed like an eternity, and it was such a beautiful moment in such a bleak game that I will never forget it.[/SPOILERS] A truly great game can mark your memory for a lifetime, and those are the stories we want to hear about right now! So go share your favorite gaming moments of 2013 with us in the comments below. Or, if you find yourself getting long-winded, write a blog! (Be sure to share the link below.) We'll be pulling in quotes from the community for a special recap post later this weekend, so take some time to think about your responses. Have fun! Read more... |
Which Console watches more Porn, BF4 Fixes & FFVIII Hair Posted: 06 Dec 2013 05:45 AM PST Hey hey! This video was supposed to go up yesterday afternoon, but a series of unfortunate events resulted in it going up very late last night, and then internet witchcraft prevented me from putting up a post. So, if you don't mind a little reheated day-old news, here ya go. CUT ME SOME SLACK I'M DOING THIS ALL ON MY OWN. We got an amazing exclusive scoop thanks to Pornhub, EA has told DICE to fix Battlefield 4 before making any new DLC, cops busted up a dude's World of Warcraft livestream after a phony tip, Riot Games' contracts with eSports iJocks apparently prevent them from streaming Fat Princess and Final Fantasy VIII is now on Steam.

Season 2 of The Walking Dead scheduled for December 17 Posted: 06 Dec 2013 05:15 AM PST Get ready to exhale all that air you've been keeping in your lungs, waiting for the second season of The Walking Dead to descend upon you like a grunting horde. The title's Steam page has seen an update which lists the start of the new season as December 17 (you were starting to look a little green around the gills anyway; that's a breathing joke). Assuming it's not some crazy error, that's less than two weeks away. So, if you planned to play (or replay) the first series of episodic zombie adventures, better get cracking. You now have a deadline.

Gran Turismo 6 vs. Forza Motorsport 5 Posted: 06 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST There's a racing simulation showdown taking place on gaming consoles this holiday season between PS3 racer Gran Turismo 6 and Xbox One launch title Forza Motorsport 5. If you ask me, I think you should buy both if you can. Both games are great. But I've dared to compare the two as a long-time fan of both franchises. Read on to see if you agree with me. [Edit: We updated the controller section as there are two$399 Xbox One steering wheels for Forza 5.] Read more... |
The 2013 SpikeTV VGX Awards Drunken Reaction Livestream Posted: 06 Dec 2013 04:45 AM PST As I imagine you've heard, tomorrow is SpikeTV's 2013 "VGX" Awards Show and I'd like to invite you to join myself, Steven Hansen, and Ben Pack as we remotely heckle presenters, critique the amount of dubstep in new game trailers, and fondly remember the time Geoff Keighley's Twitter account was apparently hacked and he kept Tweeting about giraffes. As tomorrow is a Saturday, we shall be drunk. In addition to that, I have a stack of download codes to give away courtesy of Midnight City for their new games Slender: The Arrival, The Bridge, and Blood of the Werewolf. All this happens at 3-6PM Pacific Time (-8:00 GMT) on our YouTube channel. Be there, or uh, go do something more productive instead.

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 04:35 AM PST Have you ever hopped into your car just to drive? Driving to enjoy being behind the wheel, I mean. I'm talking no destination, no time constraints -- just being in a car to connect with a machine and the road it's on. Racing games are great for going fast, and you can certainly do that in a Gran Turismo game. But Gran Turismo 6 is also a driving game. Sometimes it's less about the race and more about the thrill of the automotive experience. Sometimes it's less about being first and more about being in the zone. If you're the type of person that enjoys driving around, you'll understand what I'm saying. Read more... |
Review: Mad Catz Killer Instinct Arcade FightStick TE 2 Posted: 06 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST Mad Catz and I have a rather interesting history. One fine summer day, I had rented the PlayStation One game Ninja: Shadow of Darkness, and decided to try out my brand new Mad Catz controllers. Halfway into the final level the adhesive on the d-pad gave out, causing me to lose my last life and rub some of the skin off of my thumb. I threw the controller against the wall and didn't use another Catz controller for years. I even went so far as to occasionally gift friends licensed controllers if they didn't have any. But the Catz has come a very long way since then, and has forged a reputable bond with the fighting game community with a long line of sturdy and dependable arcade sticks. The newest of which is the Killer Instinct Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition 2 for the Xbox One. Read more... |
Wal-Mart purchases of Pokemon X/Y come with a bonus Posted: 06 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST Huh. Wal-Mart has exclusive Pokemon included in copies of Pokemon X and Y. What's curious is that they aren't anything too special -- X comes with Garchomp, while Y includes Scizor. These two have Mega Evolutions (and are admittedly badass), but it's not as if either one is challenging to obtain through online trading. Weird! A quick Google search indicates that the Garchomp has either Sand Veil or Rough Skin and the moves Slash, Dragon Claw, Dig, and Crunch. It'll also be holding a Dragon Fang. Scizor, on the other hand, will have Swarm or Technician, no item, and the moves X-Scissor, Night Slash, Double Hit, and Iron Head. Both Pokemon come in a Cherish Ball. I'm excited for a proper distribution event, whatever that may be.

Majora's Mask's Skull Kid to be an Assist in Smash Bros. Posted: 06 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST Smash Bros. lead Sakurai had a surprise for us this morning, as he tweeted out a brand new pic of the day. Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask will be an Assist Trophy! The fan favorite Zelda game is no stranger to the Smash Bros. series of course, with theTermina: Great Bay stage appearing in Melee, among other references. Sakurai reminds us that Skull Kid is not a new fighter, and will in fact function as a power-up, basically, as trophies have in past games. You can also see the Skyloft level behind him, which is a nice touch. Now, about that Majora's Mask remake for the 3DS? Sakurai [Miiverse]

Check out this teaser for Galactic Princess Posted: 06 Dec 2013 02:30 AM PST This is one of those games that immediately made me sit up and pay attention when I first heard about it. Galactic Princess will be a "Spaceship Survival Sandbox," where players can design their own ship, hire a crew, and smuggle spacedrugs for profit. You can also own cats, robots, and llamas as pets, so this could be the best game ever created by humankind. I love the glorious pixelated art style, and it reminds me of Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery. The game's website is filled with awesome looking animated gifs and art, and the style alone makes me want to go play this game. There are plans for a Kickstarter in the future, which will determine when the game will launch. Hopefully it's soon, because I really want to play this.

Download the Skywind alpha and play Morrowind in Skyrim Posted: 06 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST Just hearing the Morrowind theme fills me with the need for adventure, and seeing the streets of Balmora makes me feel at home. Now I have a chance to revisit my favorite Elder Scrolls game as a mod for Skyrim. The epic modders over at Morroblivion just released the first alpha build of Skywind, a mod that will let you play Morrowind inside of Skyrim. Right now you can't do any questing, but you are able to walk around the world and explore. This mod looks absolutely fantastic, and I can't wait for them to have it all finished. Read more... |
Final Fantasy XIV: ARR drops a 2.1 update trailer Posted: 06 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is still trucking, and its 2.1 update, titled "A Realm Awoken" is set to drop on December 17th. In addition to a new instance called "The Crystal Tower," the update will include player housing mechanics, a PVP arena, and arguably the biggest new feature -- the Duty Roulette. Said feature will allow you to enter random instanced dungeons or trials daily, granting you enhanced rewards. I'm still enjoying A Realm Reborn on PC, and I'm still surprised at how well the game works with a controller -- even on later levels. I also can't wait to see how the PlayStation 4 version looks. Not only has Square crafted a great MMO, but they've also shown that with the right support, a subscription based game can still exist in this day and age.

A ton of bugfixes have also been applied to the current build, so give it a go on Steam and see all of the changes for yourself.

The Curse of Ra Moon comes to an end in Mega Man #32 Posted: 05 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST The Mega Man comic keeps on chugging, and now, the "Curse of Ra Moon" arc is coming to a close in issue #32. This time, Dr. Wily stands with Mega Man as they battle the titular Ra Moon together -- something that rarely happens in any Mega Man related lore. Archie Comics have given us some sample pages of the upcoming issue, so feel free to browse the gallery below! Personally, I just can't wait until February, when the Mega Man X sub-series starts as part of issue #34. It won't be its own comic line, but if the demand is there, Archie has noted that it could happen! Read more... |
Gran Turismo 6 Lunar Exploration is weird and wonderful Posted: 05 Dec 2013 06:00 PM PST The rumors were true! After you work your way through a bit of the career mode of Gran Turismo 6, a Lunar Exploration mode unlocks. In it, you'll take a moon vehicle across the lunar surface in three different missions. As you'll see in the above video, the reduced gravity makes moon driving crazy. I should have recorded my first time out, where my pedal-to-the-metal approach had me doing all kinds of crazy flips. The key to getting through the mission is careful speed control. Take a hill too fast and you'll end up on your head. Our full review of Gran Turismo 6 is coming soon.

Our Gran Turismo 6 review will be late Posted: 05 Dec 2013 04:20 PM PST I've been playing Gran Turismo 6 for so many hours that I can no longer see straight. I'm not pulling your leg when I say that I dreamed about Gran Turismo last night. I had racing stress dreams, folks. So what's the hold-up on the review? It seems that Sony is having technical difficulties in getting the online side of the game up for us to test. So while the review embargo will be up in a matter of minutes, we can't send our review out into the world without touching on the online portion of the game. Hold tight.
