A new Humble Weekly Sale has launched

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST

The Humble Weekly Sale continues to deliver interesting collections at a "pay what you want" price point and this week is no exception. This week's promotion has a particularly interesting addition, game creation toolset Multimedia Fusion 2, along with half a dozen indie games including Manos: The Hands of Fate and the recently greenlit Pitiri 1977. Paying above $6 will also score you Knytt Underground, Really Big Sky, and NightSky.

As ever, you can choose how the money you pay is divvied up between the developers, charities and Humble themselves.

Sega 3D Classics Altered Beast and Sonic out now for 3DS

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

Following last week's debut of 3D Space Harrier and Super Hang-On on the 3DS eShop, another pair from the Sega 3D Classics line is available: 3D Sonic the Hedgehog and 3D Altered Beast. These are priced at $5.99/€4.99/£4.49 a piece.

Now, Altered Beast is good for the obligatory "Wise from your gwave!" joke, which I'm glad to get out of my system. Sonic, on the other hand, I wouldn't mind playing again -- particularly now that I'm familiar with the extensive amount of work M2 put into this game.

You can (optionally) spin dash now! Crazy!

Nintendo Download: The Legend of the Mystical Ninja

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 01:30 PM PST

After a jam packed retro offering last week, Nintendo is at it again with another collection of classics. On the Wii U you'll be able to nab The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, which is my personal favorite Goemon game, and one of my favorite SNES titles of all time. Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3 are also on sale for $3.49 until December 12th.

The 3DS is a little more eventful, with 3D Sonic the Hedgehog, 3D Altered Beast (!), and Brilliant Hamsters. On the Virtual Console side Donkey Kong 3 hits the portable platform, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 hits the retail download section. There's also a similar Donkey Kong sale, including the addition of Game and Watch: Donkey Kong Jr. Finally, Hooked on Bass Fishing hits DSiWare.

Frozen Endzone is in beta and available

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST

Mode 7 Games, the developers behind the pretty-much-perfect Frozen Synapse, have officially entered the beta state of their next tactical game, Frozen Endzone. At its core, it functions a lot like Synapse, except instead of shooting everyone, you want to score what we in America call, a TOUCHDOOOOOOWN.

You can buy two copies of the game for $25, or you can bump up the price for soundtracks, the ability to name players, and even more goodies. I've been told that you cannot "currently" bump up your pledge to get more rewards, but there will be ways of getting the items from other packs in the future.

I've played a few rounds of the game already, and I am absolutely enamored with it. I'm a big NFL and Frozen Synapse fan, so I feel as if this game was tailored straight to my needs. Plus, the player's team is blue and that's the color of the New York Football Giants. It's different enough from Synapse that I still feel a bit flustered when planning out a play, but familiar enough to instill some confidence in me. If you're interested, head to the official site and buy it up! Then give one to your buddy because Mode 7 Games is cool like that.

OUYA now accepts Bitcoins as a payment method

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST

If you have a whole pile of Bitcoins lying around, you'll be able to spend some of them to buy hardware and content from OUYA. Tweeting to this effect earlier today, the Android console-maker's marketplace now features an option to use the digital currency favored by internet drug dealers the world over.

Bitcoin has been slowly gaining something which resembles acceptance as a form of currency and more companies seem to be using them in transactions. But it seems to me that there's a whole lot of risk involved in assigning "cash" value to these little 1's and 0's that could conceivably just disappear one day.

Of course, we assign similar value to easily burned pieces of paper all the time, so what the hell do I know?

Bethesda will not show anything new at VGX

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 11:30 AM PST

Looks like we got our first disappointment of the week. With the VGX awards only two days away, the anticipation for what new titles are going to be revealed is reaching fever pitch. Unfortunately, we just got a confirmation about what is NOT going to show up. Pete Hines from Bethesda confirmed that the publisher will not be revealing any new titles.

On his Twitter account, the VP of Bethesda Softworks stamped out any hope of the long rumored Fallout 4, or any other titles, making an appearance soon. "No, folks. I am not going to VGX. Bethesda is not showing/talking about anything at VGX. Just some PR meetings in LA. Take deep breaths." Of course, this is in response to the timing of the awards show and after weeks of anticipation with the mystery Survivor2299.com site has been continually updated.

Moreover, in a thread from NeoGAF about this very tweet, the community lead manager from Bethesda commented briefly about the site while neither confirming or denying Bethesda's involvement. "As a company, we avoid commenting on rumors & speculation. If you start commenting on this and that, then you can never surprise people when you really want to, when it’s appropriate and exciting for your audience. Catching everyone by surprise made our 2010 VGA announcement of Skyrim special -- not just for us, but for everyone that’s a fan of The Elder Scrolls. No one wants to lose those moments."

Well, I guess that's that. It looks like the announcement of Fallout 4, or any other Bethesda Softworks developed title is gonna have to wait. But don't worry, though. We've still got plenty of new trailers and gameplay of cool games to look forward to, not mention some reveals of never-before-seen titles.

Space Hulk digital version now available on iPad

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

Space Hulk, the Games Workshop board game of paranoid derelict exploration, has found a new home on iPad today. Featuring cross-platform play with the PC and Mac versions, you can now skulk around killing your friends pretty much anywhere for $9.99.

Few games manage to capture the Aliens vibe better than Space Hulk does. With its modular board design that makes each exploration fresh and the uncertainty which comes from not knowing how dangerous a group of Genestealers might be at first gives the most delightful tension to everything. Unfortunately, I've yet to read a glowing review of the digital release, so I'll probably just stick to the tabletop for now.

Psychological island adventure Dyscourse funded

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

Just about a month ago we got our first look at Dyscourse, which has not only a distinctive art style but also a pitch that could potentially demonstrate the strengths of interactive narratives over the more linear stories that most games, books, and movies can provide. Having branching paths with truly unique consequences and important decisions is a tall order, but Owlchemy Labs made its case well on why Dyscourse should be able to pull it off.

Those anxious about whether the title would see funding can breathe a sigh of relief now; Dyscourse met its funding goal with a day to spare in the campaign. With the game funded, we can expect to see the Indie Plane Crash bonus story as well, without us having to help hit a stretch goal or pay extra for the content.

Live show: Learn the fine art of torture in Wild 9

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Another day, another theme, and an explanation of what it's all about. Each Thursday, join us on Mash Tactics as we take a trip to the past, and play some of the games of yesteryear. The good, the bad, the ugly, it doesn't matter, if the game is somewhat old school, chances are you'll eventually see it here. While the term retro can mean different things to different people, I'll be sticking to anything from the original PlayStation and earlier. That's old enough for me.

Speaking of the original PlayStation, tonight I'll be playing one of my favorites to come out for the console, Wild 9. Back in the day, there was nothing quite like hopping into the shoes of Wex Major, and whipping my enemies into various death traps. I honestly couldn't be more excited to play this game again for the first time in over fifteen years, and to share it with people who may have missed out on this quirky and original action platformer.

Hawken launches its Christmas map and Wreckage update

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

Now that we're into December, it seems okay that games are rolling out Christmas updates; any earlier and you'd have this cranky old man complaining on the internet and no one wants that. Hawken's latest update combines a whole new map along with a wintery version of an existing one along with some lovely Christmas-themed goodies.

First up, the new map is called Wreckage and it's based, appropriately enough, around the broken up husk of a shattered cargo vessel that's crashed in some swampland. I've enjoyed when Hawken have broken away from the earlier desert/urban maps and this new Wreckage maps seems to be another fresh change.

The other part of the update is Operation Frostburn which takes place on a snowy version of the jungle Last Eco map which was released a few months ago. It's suitable chilly-looking and you can now purchase or unlock some new Christmas wrapping paper skins or even a snowman repair drone which I have a feeling I'll be getting. There's also a hint at something nasty lurking in the trees so be on your guard. It might be Krampus: wonder how he'd take a missile barrage to the face? Not well, I'd think.

Eat furniture and hide from security in Not the Robots

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST

Here's a trailer for Not the Robots, a stealth game where you control a robot who must eat the furniture in a procedurally generated office building. The furniture you're compelled to eat also serves as the environmental cover needed to sneak through. Clever stuff.

The game is planned to release on PC, Mac and Linux (through Steam) sometime in mid-December and I hope it's as much fun as it appears. Developed as part of the HouseOGames incubator program, designers Eli Pililonen and David Carney have a history of making fun Flash titles (I love Viricide) and this marks their first commercial release. Looks like it's coming together pretty well for them.

What was the WORST new game you played this year?

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

[All week long we'll be asking for your thoughts on certain topics related to the year in gaming. Miss yesterday's post? Click here to chime in with your favorite new songs or soundtracks!]

Ride to Hell: Retribution. Final Fantasy All the Bravest. Resident Evil 6. Aliens: Colonial Marines. You get the point. Please don't make me keep looking these up. It hurts.

I thankfully avoided every stinker of a game released this year, but I know some of you weren't as fortunate. Some of you got conned into a ticket on the pre-order hype train and had no choice but to ride it to the end of the line. Some no doubt played through these toxic specimens because you knew they were turds, possibly to fulfill some masochistic fantasy that you should probably see a therapist about. Whatever the case, you no doubt played some real shit games this year, and we want to hear about them!

Share your awful game stories in the comments below. Or, if you find yourself getting long-winded, write a blog. (Be sure to share the link below.) We'll be pulling in quotes from the community for a special recap post later this week, so take some time to think about your responses!

Have fun! If it's even possible...

PS Mobile titles Gun Commando, Mononoke Slashdown go free

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST

As Chris told us, Sony is giving away ten PlayStation Mobile games for free this holiday season. The current pair of titles is an old-school first-person shooter called Gun Commando and a 2D hack-and-slash romp named Mononoke Slashdown, shown above.

If you're a Vita owner, find these in the PlayStation Mobile section of the storefront. Otherwise, they're listed on the PS Mobile Store for those who have a PlayStation-certified mobile device.

I wasn't going to write about the games unless they looked reasonably decent, and that seems to be the case, particularly for Mononoke Slashdown. One of the bosses is the mythological Wanyūdō, a burning wheel with a face. Yep, that settles it. This game isn't covering new ground by any means, but it looks worth getting for free.

Killing Floor Christmas offer has new level for The Ball

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST

Every year you can count on Tripwire to crank out some content for Killing Floor for Christmas and this year is no exception. What's interesting about this year's Twisted Christmas Event is that's there's some neat crossover with the first-person puzzler The Ball.

First up, there's two new maps and achievements along with the return of all the Christmas-themed mutants from previous years. You'll also get a chance to get the Zed Gun and Baddest Santa again, if you didn't manage to get the unlocks from a previous event.

If you already own The Ball, you'll unlock Harchier Spebbington (which is the best not-really-an-upper-class English name ever) as a character skin which was previously only available as a pre-order. There's also a new two-hour mini campaign for The Ball and all of this is free if you own both games. If not, both are reduced to half price right now and Killing Floor is free to play until January 2. Killing Floor might be looking a bit old now but you can't argue with a game that's been supported this well with free and paid DLC.

You don't say: Super Time Force also coming to Xbox One

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 06:45 AM PST

No, Xbox 360s haven't magically become irrelevant now that the Xbox One is out, but developers are starting to make the transition all the same. For a game like Super Time Force, it makes total sense that it would release across both systems.

Capy will self-publish its side-scrolling shooter on Xbox One "a few months into 2014." As a result, the Xbox Live Arcade version won't be done this year as previously expected. Instead, it will be out at the same time as Xbox One -- that's the plan, anyway. A long wait made even longer, but Super Time Force should be well worth it based on how well the game shows at expos.

There's a bit of footage in this trailer, as well as another look at the studio's other Xbox One game, Below. Both are shaping up quite nicely.

Play Sonic Racing Transformed for free this weekend

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST

One of the best kart racers in years can be played for free this weekend on Steam. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is yours for the trying now through Sunday at 1:00pm Pacific.

If you like what you see, the full game is currently on sale for $4.99 until Monday at 10:00am Pacific. This version has a number of exclusive characters, including the Spy, Pyro, and Heavy from Team Fortress 2. (There's no beating Joe Musashi, though.)

Steam has had its fair share of good games going free for the weekend, but Transformed is one I urge all Sega fans to check out. It single-handedly rekindled my love of kart racing.

PC Port Report: SteamWorld Dig

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

Originally released on the 3DS eShop several months ago, SteamWorld Dig has now come to Windows, Mac, and Linux via Steam. This port of the 2D mining adventure has a fresh coat of paint thanks to new high-definition art, and if it looks appealing in still images, wait until you see this in motion running at a smooth 60 frames per second.

Tony Ponce reviewed the handheld version back in August and while I generally agree with his assessment, the game left a much better impression on me. In fact, I loved nearly every moment of my time spent with SteamWorld Dig.

It's just a shame there isn't more of it.

Dev: DayZ early access is a 'recipe for disappointment'

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST

The developers on the standalone version of DayZ put out a blog post yesterday covering the current state of the game. It will be out on Steam Early Access soon, and the developers made it clear that "it's a true-blue alpha."

Many of the game's features won't be ready when it comes out on Early Access, and "Buying early will be a recipe for disappointment." This doesn't mean that the finished game will be bad, but anyone expecting to jump into a polished product could be surprised.

Early Access is really for people who want in on a game as it is being developed, and the DayZ team says that this is the opposite of what many gamers want. This Early Access version of DayZ will be targeted at "a core audience who want to get deeply involved in a very barebones experience that is a platform for future development."

Ultra Street Fighter IV hits PS3 and 360 in early June

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 05:15 AM PST

Capcom has come out with updated release info for Ultra Street Fighter IV and there are a few different dates to keep track of across the multiple versions.

Up first is the $14.99 digital upgrade for Xbox 360 and PS3, out in early June. The same upgrade is coming to PC in August, and that's also when the 360 and PS3 full digital bundles and retail releases are hitting. These are $39.99 and include all of the costumes to date.

Given the late PC version, the full digital bundle on that platform will be slightly cheaper at $29.99 when it's available in August. According to Capcom, this schedule "was the only way that we could ensure USFIV would be included in the largest fighting game tournament in the world."

In addition to location tests for Ultra Street Fighter IV, it will be playable at Capcom Cup on December 14, 2013 at the Hyatt SFO. Follow the link below for specifics.

Stick it to the Man is coming to the PC this month

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST

Out of nowhere, Stick it to the Man was released last month on the PS3 and Vita, and captivated quite a few gamers with its endearing comedy and visual style. But it looks like PC users will get a chance to get in on the action as well, as publisher Ripstone has announced that the game will be arriving on Steam on December 13th.

I've had a chance to play it on the Vita, and it's just as charming as it looks. It also doesn't overstay its welcome, making it a great way to spend an afternoon.

You can find the game's Steam listing here.

Dark Souls II screenshots show off new covenants

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 04:45 AM PST

Lately, Namco Bandai has been pretty keen to show off its upcoming title, Dark Souls II. With early 2014 looking pretty packed, From Software's next entry in the Souls series looks to be the one to keep an eye out for. In the recent issue of the Famitsu, readers got a taste of what to expect in the upcoming action/RPG title.

The magazine went in-depth with the reveal of two brand new covenants; the Warriors of Sunlight, which is an evolution of Sunlight Covenant in the original game, and the Guardians of the Bell, a black phantom focused faction where players are summoned as the notorious entities and must stop other players from ringing two bells within the game world.

In addition to this new info, we got a whole slew of new screenshots showing off much of the new enemies, areas, and loot. Take a look!

Police detain World of Warcraft player during livestream

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST

Someone decided to play an awful prank on Swifty, a World of Warcraft broadcaster with a half-million subscribers on YouTube. Some asshat watching his livestream decided it would be hilarious to call the cops and claim that Swifty was threatening someone with a knife. The police showed up during his broadcast, searched his house, and detained him for questioning.

Since everyone could see him playing World of Warcraft, it's clear that no one was actually being threatened. According to Massively, this isn't the first time that someone has pulled this kind of stunt on Swifty. I really hope that they can get to the bottom of this, and that Swifty can go back to playing videogames without being harassed.

Major Nelson gives some Xbox One tips and tricks

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 04:15 AM PST

This informational Xbox One video from Xbox Live's Major Nelson is proof that I'll click just about anything with "tips and tricks" in the title. I don't own the console and by the time I eventually do, these tidbits will have long since left my memory. And yet, I'm watching this as if I'm about to be given a pop quiz on the subject.

If you haven't brushed up on the literature, there is some insight to be gained. Using the context-sensitive menu button while in the party app to make the group invite-only, for example, is valuable to know. Same goes for double tapping the Xbox button to switch between apps.

Impressions: Madden NFL 25 (Xbox One and PS4)

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

It's tough to feel the need to upgrade to a "next-gen" version of a game when so many of them are practically identical to the product you already bought. Though some PS4 and Xbox One titles have drastic differences like a vast player count improvement in the case of Battlefield 4, for instance, many are content with minor visual filters.

Thankfully, the upgraded version of Madden 25 is just that -- actually upgraded.

Final Fantasy VIII is now on Steam

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 03:35 AM PST

Fresh off of the release of Final Fantasy VII's PC re-release, Final Fantasy VIII is now available for purchase on Steam. It's priced at $11.99, and also comes with the [cheating] "Magic Booster" feature, which allows players to max out their stock of certain spells. As an added bonus, the Steam release comes with Chocobo World, which is a separate application -- amazing!

I've always had a soft spot for Final Fantasy VIII. I loved the captivating universe, I got used to the stock system rather quickly, I really enjoyed the over-the-top ability to break the conventions of 9,999 damage, and the crazy summons made my smile. The addition of Chocobo World is the icing on the cake.

459,000 FIFA 14 games are being played every 90 minutes

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 02:30 AM PST

I'm playing and digging FIFA 14, but I'll admit to not having any idea what's going on. I don't know the teams, the players, or any of the rules. I just try to get the ball to the goal.On the other hand, my European friends are all up in FIFA 14. It's all they talk about. I just nod and smile when it gets technical. I call it my sportsball smile.

Together, we've contributed to the 459,000 FIFA 14 games being played around the world every 90 minutes. A new infographic from EA says that 3.66 million shots are made in the same amount of time. And if you know your players, Cristiano Ronaldo is the top goal scorer, with 35.2 million goals so far.

Tongue and butt controllers created by Valve engineer

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 02:15 AM PST

Here is something I have never thought while playing a game, "Gee! I wish I could use my butt to control this!" Even if it's something you have never thought of, an engineer at Valve, Ben Krasnow, put together two very interesting controllers.

The "posture-based" game controller is sat on, and the player can lean in four directions to control a game. The immediate thing I thought of was using this to control leaning in a first-person game. I know I am guilty of leaning in real life when my character in a game needed to see around a corner. This would just make the leaning actually do something.

PlayStation 4 users have shared 6.5 million times already

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST

Sony has announced that 6.5 million shares have been captured by way of the PlayStation 4's share functionality. The button allows players to instantly share screenshots and videos by way of the PS4's interface, and stream to Ustream and Twitch. No data was given as to how many people actually viewed this media however.

The share button is a bit of an odd feature for me. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I never really feel compelled to use it. Unlike an old fashioned capture method where I can manipulate the data any way I wish (with a much higher resolution), the PS4's share functionality is fragmented, and can only be uploaded to certain areas of the web. Once YouTube support is added I may be more enticed.

Valve joins the Linux Foundation

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST

Valve just joined the Linux Foundation, a non-profit group that focuses on the development of the open source operating system. Mike Sartain of Valve made the statement that “Joining the Linux Foundation is one of many ways Valve is investing in the advancement of Linux gaming. Through these efforts, we hope to contribute tools for developers building new experiences on Linux, compel hardware manufacturers to prioritize support for Linux, and ultimately deliver an elegant and open platform for Linux users.”

Joining the Linux Foundation will allow the company to have a part in the future of Linux, and it will be able to weigh in on design decisions. Valve is the one of the only gaming-focused company in the Foundation, and since Valve is pushing to have PC gaming switch over to Linux, it should be able to give some good advice to the group on what gamers need from the OS.

Valve has its own flavor of Linux, SteamOS, in the works, and they are already working with developers to get more games available on the platform. Valve is also working with hardware manufacturers to roll out SteamOS based Steam Machines next year.

Eryi's Action is a platformer designed to be unfair

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST

Eryi's Action is available now on Steam. If you haven't heard of it, the game is notorious for its difficulty, and was designed to frustrate hardcore platformer fans. For instance, right after starting the first stage, I died in less than three seconds after stepping on a hidden spike trap that sprang from the floor.

I was in heaven, basically. Five seconds later, I jumped into a floating block expecting a power-up, and an enemy pops out -- death. 10 seconds into the level, and an invisible block that appears as I'm making a jump over a pit causes me to bump my head and fall in the void below -- death.

Eryi's Action is what many gamers refer to as "fake difficulty." Rather than sport a design like Volgarr where you can see everything beforehand and react accordingly, Eryi's tricks and traps are often completely hidden from view, and at times, require some form of memorization.

Activision blames new consoles for lower sales of Ghosts

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 12:30 AM PST

Activision knows why Call of Duty: Ghosts didn't sell as many copies as they had hoped, and it has nothing to do with them regurgitating the same game every year. Eric Hirshberg, Activision's CEO, told GameInformer that the slow sales were due to "the challenges of the console transition year."

He also blew off the negative critical response to Ghosts by saying that "the critical response doesn't always mirror the fans' appreciation of a game. We actually do read the critics' comments and take them into consideration during our creative process, but we just can't measure ourselves by that yardstick alone."

The PS3 is porn console king, 360 is indeed for Teens

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST

Shortly after the PS4's launch, Pornhub announced that it was the first porn site to fully support the PS4. Destructoid reached out to Pornhub following the announcement and got a load of interesting facts and breakdowns of console porn viewership.

According to Pornhub Vice President Corey Price, "Pornhub is targeting consoles for website support because that is where some of our users today prefer to access our site and our aim is to offer a great user experience across all platforms."

At least percentage wise, this intersection of porn and consoles rings true. The PS3, PS4, Wii, and Xbox 360 users who visit the site have a lower bounce rate than average traffic -- they're more likely to visit more pages rather than split after coming to the site. All four consoles also have a longer visit duration than average traffic, though that could come from those consoles being less efficient than PC visitation. It's hard enough typing on the Xbox 360, but with one hand?

The lion's share of console porn viewing comes from the PS3, which accounts for 55% of console traffic to the Xbox's 39% and the Wii's limp 6%.

What really sticks out, however, is what kind of porn each console indulges in.

Shuhei Yoshida addresses Gran Turismo 6 microtransactions

Posted: 04 Dec 2013 11:03 PM PST

Remember when everyone was down on Forza 5 for having microtransactions on top of its premium price? Well we already know that Gran Turismo 6 will have the same scheme, but Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida is telling people to calm down before they actually play the game. Yoshida notes that they offer an "alernative path for busy people," and to "read reviews when they come out."

After being further pressed regarding Sony's betrayal of the public's trust through microtransactions, Yoshida says, "microtransaction per se is not a bad thing, how the game is designed around it could become a problem." Like every developer, I'm willing to give Sony the benefit of the doubt, as I've yet to see the system for myself.

Microtransaction rage is far too common these days, as completely optional fees that I will never use don't really bother me, so long as the game is entertaining in its own right -- and as Yoshida notes, isn't designed around it.

Nintendo 30th anniversary CD is perfect stocking stuffer

Posted: 04 Dec 2013 10:00 PM PST

Nintendo has released their Famicom-era soundtracks in a variety of ways over the years, but it's been quite some time since anything has been available in print. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of some of their earliest titles, however, Nippon Columbia is putting out a two-disc Blu-spec CD containing music from Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Dr. Mario, and tons more.

It was just released today in Japan, and I say it's a great stocking stuffer because it's priced reasonably well by Japanese standards. CD Japan is selling it for about 2,200 Yen ($22), which may sound steep, but is a bargain if you regularly buy Japanese CDs.

I've been listening to this all day, which says a lot given how adamant I am about listening to Christmas music this time of year!

Got anyone on your Christmas shopping list that could go for some classic Nintendo music?
