Shed a tear for Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD in this video

I feel like we should be the one's crying about Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, since the game has already hit store shelves in Japan. But alas, this strange commercial for the game's Vita release reminds us just how touching of a love story Final Fantasy X had for its time.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster launches (with a sweet collector's edition) on March 18 in North America and March 21 in Europe for PlayStation 3 and Vita.

New Breath of Fire 6 screens show a sliver of promise

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

I like to be mister optimism when it comes to games...even games that are slated for mobile and browser based platforms. But I've had an extremely hard time believing that the sixth entry in the Breath of Fire series is going to deliver an experience that will make me proud, once again, of Capcom's beloved role-playing franchise.

Recently, a bevy of new screens have hit the Internets showcasing a little combat, some village building, and some quite lovely -- and adorable -- concept art. Not enough to gather a full impression on, but hey it could be always look worse.

On top of the new screens, first details of the game's story and gameplay have emerged. Thanks to a breakdown over at NeoGAF, we now know combat will feature: no complex command menus, fast and intuitive touch controls, timing based combos, and party members will be AI driven.

Additionally, the game will ditch the predetermined hero Ryu -- a staple of every other past entry -- to allow players to create and customize their own character.

As for story, what's there again does hint that maybe all isn't lost with Breath of Fire 6. A thousand years has passed since someone last held the power of the dragon. There's now a new evil empire -- the Schwarz Empire -- that attacks the main character's village, and -- from what I can only assume -- typical RPG melodrama ensues.

Who knows, maybe this will all turn out quite well. Then again maybe this will be a microtransaction nightmare. Though as it stands right now the game is only destined to grace Japanese shores.

Majora's Mask Skull Kid featured in live action short

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

Here is an exceptionally good short film based on The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and its central antagonist, the Skull Kid. Dreamlike and without spoken dialogue, it relates how Skull Kid came into possession of Majora's Mask and used it to take vengeance on the town which banished him.

Great effects in this, particularly the moon which looks just as creepy in this as it did the first time I saw it in the game. But I think my favorite bit of this is Link, who actually looks like a boy instead of a teenager or young man. It seems odd how infrequently I see that.

Fjords dev on the spaces where great things can happen

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 05:15 AM PST

Last week's Sup Holmes (now in iTunes) with Kyle Reimengartin (Fjords, Lazer Catz) was one for the books. The central theme of the episode was about the energy that can be found in negative space, which was ironic, as there wasn't a heck of a lot of negative space in our discussion. Kyle was on fire, talking about how important it is to leave room for players/students to make something their own, the power of Chibi Robo, how food is everything, the way ShareCart 1000 turns videogames into living things, how supplemental material like guides can combine with a game create something larger than the sum of their parts, how to create art for games on your phone, and so much more.

Kyle is one of those developers that I'm grateful to have on the show before he gets too big and untouchable, which could happen any second now. His brain is built for making videogames, and it's only a matter of time before one of those games launches him into the world of fame and fortune. Thanks again to Kyle for being on the show, and tune in tomorrow at 1pm PST/4pm when we welcome Marcus Lindblom (Earthbound, Carried Away Games) to the program.

China bans Battlefield 4

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST

I remember browsing the Origin store a few days ago to see if EA was going to at least try and compete with Steam's Holiday Sale when I came across the Battlefield 4: China Rising expansion in the 'New Releases' section. I thought to myself, "Hah, I bet the Chinese government won't be too happy about that."

Turns out that I was right, because they've just banned Battlefield 4.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Chinese government cited "national security" and aggression towards Chinese culture as its reason for issuing the ban on DICE's shooter; Battlefield 4 wasn't available in China to begin with, so I doubt this'll have much of an affect on EA.

Borderlands 2 writer comments on Handsome Jack fan video

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 04:15 AM PST

Machinima is set to launch a video series about Handsome Jack, the villain of Borderlands 2. It's not looking like a huge budget production, but that doesn't mean it wont be a good watch. I managed to get Borderlands 2 writer and former Dtoid features editor Anthony Burch to appear in my dumb Machinima show for free, which made me wonder if Anthony was lending a hand with this new series. Burch states, "[As] far as I know it's all totally fan made. I'm psyched somebody liked Jack enough to make a fan film about him, though."

Gearbox didn't have a ton of money to work with when putting together the Borderlands games, but they've still found a huge following. I attribute that to the inspired risks that the developers were willing to take, not the least of which was hiring a a young, relatively inexperienced games writer like Anthony. Here's to hoping that this fan series takes similar chances, and that those chances pay off just as well.
