Just Cause 2 Multiplayer is ModDB's mod of the year Posted: 27 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST The recently released multiplayer mod for Just Cause 2 has won the ModDB's Mod of the Year award. Fully released on Steam just two weeks ago, the mod allows a huge number of players to fight or race each other in the game's massive map. It's sure hard to argue with something that's been making waves throughout the year, with beta tests whetting appetites until the final mod was released. There's notable entries for mods like Project Brazil, which brings new content to Fallout: New Vegas and the Game of Thrones mod for Crusader Kings II. I was surprised to see The Dark Mod for Thief absent from the top 10 but it seems like multiplayer mods are the popular thing right now. Also explains the lack of the Thomas the Tank Engine mod for Skyrim...
Live show: Star Conflict and Baldur's Gate II Posted: 27 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] Ever since I was young, and watched the movie The Last Starfighter for the first time, I've had dreams of flying an elite spacecraft and taking on an seemingly invincible armada. While I fear something like that will never happen, sadly, at least the videogame world has allowed me numerous opportunities to live out my fantasy in digital form. My latest star-fighting obsession as of late, is the F2P space combat simulator, Star Conflict. The best way I can explain what this game is all about, is to say it's basically World of Tanks, in space. However, there is a bit more to it than that, and you should totally watch Mash Tactics tonight and see it in action for yourself! After a couple hours of that, stay tuned as myself and a few other Twitch.TV broadcasters get together for our weekly session of Baldur's Gate II. At this point, we're already at about eighty hours into our six-player co-op campaign, and tonight, finally, we'll be approaching the end game by stepping into the expansion, Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, and exploring the entirety of Watcher's Keep. If you have a thing for sci-fi, or high fantasy, tonight is your night at Dtoid.TV! QotD: If you could live in any existing sci-fi or fantasy world, which one would it be?
Why Spelunky on PC was my real game of 2013 Posted: 27 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST When it comes to working out which games are eligible for our Game of the Year voting process, the issue of a re-release is a thorny one. Plenty of games are either console or PC exclusive, only to have a version come out a year later on another system. The question we ask ourselves is: Does this new version do enough to justify inclusion in our voting for another year? After some discussion, it was decided that the 2013 PC release of Spelunky wasn't eligible for our 2013 GotY voting. The hell with that, Spelunky on PC is my game of the year -- it's the game I've been singularly obsessed with since its release back in August. Whilst I'm happy with the top 10 games I submitted for voting, there was only one game that really sucked me in and here's why.
Resident Evil fans are in their 30s and 40s, says Capcom Posted: 27 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST In a article for investors detailing the rise of Resident Evil, Capcom has shared its thoughts on the future of the series. Talking about promotion, the developer notes "The main user group is now in their late-30s to 40s, and the average age is also going up as the series goes on with an increasing possibility that some percentage of the existing users will outgrow games altogether." Capcom decided that getting exposure in fashion magazines was the way to go, so the company has been "collaborating with fashion brands which are popular among young people" and trying out concepts like that Resident Evil-themed café in Shibuya. Yeah, I know. I think the key here isn't what the marketing department is or isn't doing -- it's the quality of the games, which has been in question as of late. Trying to bring in a new audience is all well and good, but longtime fans aren't going to blindly purchase everything with Resident Evil on the box. Forget about their age. That's not the real issue here. Main Resident Evil Fanbase Is In Its 30s And 40s Says Capcom [Siliconera] [Image source]

The Internet Archive adds classic games Posted: 27 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST I love The Internet Archive for its Wayback Machine, which lets you see, say, what Destructoid looked like back in 2006. But its software collection is a geeky delight, and its new Console Living Room beta is also pretty slick. To see what games they're preserving for future generations, simply click on one of the consoles and then pick a game to try. The the magical power of web browser gaming and system emulation, everything from the Magnavox Odyssey to the ColecoVision is represented and ready to try. Not all games are listed yet, but they're working on it. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress, so there will be no sound in the games. They say that this feature will be added soon.
Nintendo is taking the eShop offline today Posted: 27 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST Here we are. The eShop hasn't been its normal self lately, as some of you may have experienced first hand this week. Nintendo will be taking the storefront offline later today for maintenance. "In an effort to manage the high volume of traffic and ultimately improve your experience, we are temporarily taking the Nintendo eShop services offline between the hours of 4 p.m. - 4 a.m. ET," wrote the company. "Thank you so much for your continued patience. We will keep you updated." Here's hoping everything goes smoothly and the Pokémon Bank isn't far off.
| Steam sale: Don't Starve, Blood Dragon, Prison Architect Posted: 27 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST There's occasionally some weirdness with pricing as Steam rolls out new deals for its holiday promotion and, as a result, I thought for sure that Don't Starve's price for today -- an absurd $1.19 -- was an error. It was, sadly. But even at $5.09, it's well worth owning. Daily deals:
For flash sales right now, we're looking at Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon ($5.09), The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition ($4.99), Skullgirls ($7.49), Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes ($19.99). The current community choice winner is the squad-based roguelike Steam Marines ($2.49), while the next deal will be either The Stanley Parable ($10.05), Civilization V ($7.50), or Total War: Rome II ($29.98). Be sure to vote for free Snow Globe cards! |
Natural Doctrine cinematic trailer looks very pretty Posted: 27 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST Kadokawa Games is vaunting its new internal studio's artistic prowess in the latest trailer for Natural Doctrine. The video for the upcoming role-playing game shows off some pretty cinematics and concept art whilst introducing the title's colorful cast of characters and a few of the enemies players will need to vanquish along the way. Natural Doctrine will arrive for PlayStation 3, PS4, and PS Vita on February 22 in Japan. Any potential plans for an international release have yet to be announced.

This Deep Down Prologue trailer is pretty neat Posted: 27 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST It's been awhile since we've heard anything about Capcom's online next-gen game Deep Down. I played their Tokyo Game Show demo, but that demo was so short that it was hard to form an opinion on the game. All I can tell you so far is that it features slow combat and that it looks outstanding. Oh, and it's a free-to-play title. You'll get an even better look at it in this brand new Prologue trailer, released online this week. It shows off some of Deep Down's freaky monsters. How 'bout that mouth guy at the end! It also teases with scenes of multiplayer action. It looks pretty good.
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth gets flashy new video Posted: 27 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST Atlus has released yet another trailer for Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, the dungeon crawling Nintendo 3DS spin-off featuring the casts of both Persona 3 and Persona 4. The video showcases a little of everything one might expect from the upcoming role-player, setting the stage for the Etrian Odyssey-style journey with a blend of gameplay footage and snippets of lovely animated scenes. Despite the cutesy art direction, it definitely still feels appropriately dark and brooding. So don't fret too much, chibi-haters. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth will arrive in Japan on June 5, 2014. With any luck, hopefully a localized version isn't far behind. This is looking ace and I want to play it yesterday!
Online features for GT5, Resistance games being dropped Posted: 27 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST Come 2014, Sony will be discontinuing online support for Gran Turismo 5, Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2 and Resistance 3. Yes, that means that you'll no longer be able to play these games online; Sony is essentially pulling the plug on them. The Resistance trilogy will go offline on March 28, with Gran Turismo 5 following suit about two months later on May 20. Are any of you going to be affected by this in any way? Support for online game features [PlayStation]
Posted: 26 Dec 2013 08:00 PM PST Aw yeah Luigi time! Dr. Luigi is hitting the Wii U on the 31st for $14.99. CastleStorm is also a thing, as is Super Punch-Out!!, one of my top 10 favorite SNES games ever. Select Ubisoft titles are also on sale, so check your local eShop. On the 3DS side the Pokemon Transfer and Bank App has been delayed, but EDGE is hitting the eShop, as is Bird Mania Christmas and Cubit. Mario Tennis is available on the VC, and more Ubisoft and Atlus games are on sale.
Kung Fury is the ultimate '80s action movie Posted: 26 Dec 2013 05:00 PM PST It's Christmas week, there ain't much happening, so let's take a break and enjoy this trailer for Kung Fury, the ultimate '80s action movie. This will especially please all of you that enjoyed Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. This isn't just a fake trailer either, as the creator wants to make this into a full movie. Check out the Kickstarter if you want to see this one come through.
| So this is a 'rubbing, pinching, panty-wearing RPG' Posted: 26 Dec 2013 03:30 PM PST Compile Heart has created a treasure trove of strange and unsavory things in its time, but this just make take the cake. Wait. Actually, no. Never mind. It's definitely up there though. The purveyors of games such as Hyperdimension Neptunia and that other one where you stroke a Vita in a rather inappropriate fashion are back to their old tricks with a title called Genkai Totsuki Moero Chronicle. The upcoming Vita project is billed as a “rubbing, pinching, panty-wearing RPG.” Sometimes there just are no words. Genkai Totsuki Moero Chronicle is slated to hit Japan on April 24.
