Wii U sells 109K, Puzzle & Dragons Z tops charts in Japan

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 02:30 PM PST

Puzzle & Dragons Z sold more than 800,000 units in the fortnight followings its release in Japan, according to data obtained by tracking authority Media Create. The role-playing hybrid secured the premier spot atop the nation's software charts during both weeks, selling in excess of 543,000 in its debut plus an additional 256,000 in its second week on the market.

The more puzzle-centric mobile version has been downloaded more than 23 million times across Japan, North America, and Korea; GungHo Online announced last month.

The North America-bound Drakengard 3 also hit shelves in Japan last week, putting up a comparatively modest 114,000 sales -- good for fourth place on the software charts.

On the hardware side of things, the Nintendo 3DS dominated, as per usual. The portable's sales comprised over half the market, selling a combined 232,000 units. The Wii U also had an impressive showing, with sales constituting more than a quarter of weekly console sales. The struggling system secured over 109,000 sales, which dipped as low as 15,000 one week in November.

Batman Arkham-related announcement inbound

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 01:30 PM PST

See that image above? Well, it was posted on Batman Arkham's official Facebook page along with instructions to "visit this page on December 31st for a special announcement."

Could it be some Arkham Origin's DLC? A new entry into the series itself, perhaps?

Pokémon Bank and Transporter delayed in the West

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 12:30 PM PST

After hearing about Nintendo pulling the just-released Pokémon Bank app in Japan due to an overwhelming amount of traffic on the Nintendo Network, I was worried this would happen. Previously scheduled for a December 27 launch in North America and Europe, the Bank and Poké Transporter have been postponed indefinitely. Aww, shoot!

"Due to the high traffic, players are having trouble setting up Nintendo Network IDs and downloading content in the Nintendo eShop on both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS," reads an announcement. "We truly regret the inconvenience, and wish to reassure everyone that providing a solution is our top priority. We apologize for the delay and thank you for your continued patience."

Bummer, even if I did see it coming. I have my copy of Pokémon White nearly ready for the great transfer of 2013. Which might need to be renamed, at this rate.

Man's record-breaking collection contains 10,607 games

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

The largest collection of videogames, according to Guinness, belongs to Michael Thomasson. He's got 10,607 games, up from the last Guinness World Record holder's collection of 8,616 titles, reports The Associated Press. My first reaction to hearing the new number was to wonder how anyone could have time to play all of these games (excluding our own Chris Carter).

"I probably get three hours of playing in a week," said Thomasson, who teaches animation and game design at Canisus College. "If I'm lucky."

My favorite part of this story is that he sold his collection -- twice, actually -- which is something many of us can relate to. The first time was to pay for a Sega Genesis and the second sale was to help cover his wedding. Thomasson estimates his current lot to be worth between $700,000 - $800,000.

Live show: Papers, Please

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

After a short hiatus filled with family, food, and festivities, Mash Tactics is back in action this evening with it's usual daily dose of gaming shenaniganery. Now, while I got some sweet stuff for Christmas, nothing can compare to what the Twitch.TV community dropped on me over the past few days. Lately, I've been going through some really tough times financially, and these wonderful people took it upon themselves to basically clear my Steam wishlist. Just thinking about this staggering gesture of generosity damn near makes me teary-eyed, and I can't ever possibly thank all the people involved enough for their support during rough times.

Tonight, I'm going to bust out one of the games that I received, and have been absolutely dying to play, Papers, Please. I've never played this myself, and I'm still pretty unfamiliar with all of the games in's and out's, so if you want to come by and help me out, that would be much appreciated. All I've seen and heard about Papers, Please has been amazing, including the game winning a couple of best of 2013 awards right here at Destructoid, and I'm extremely stoked for tonight's show. So please, be sure to come by Dtoid.TV tonight as I experience the game myself for the very first time, and more than likely let all the wrong people across the border.

QotD: Speaking of Steam, what did you grab from the holiday sale?

Video: Six facts about the Dreamcast you might not know

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST

Did you know that the Sega Dreamcast is the only major console released in the last 20 years to have no games by Electronic Arts? I didn't, and you probably didn't either (if you did then oooooh, look at you, Mr. Know-It-All). But thanks to Vsauce3's latest entry in his Fact Surgery video series, which showcases six "awesome" Dreamcast facts, I do now.

Live show: Our favorite games from the year

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

It's that time of the year again where we, as gamers, like to look back and reflect on what we most enjoyed in the games we played. With all these game of the year posts floating around we over on the Clubhouse have also gotten into the spirit.

With Spencer still gone and presumably locked away in some dungeon somewhere Bill Zoeker and I are left to do shows without him. So we thought we would pick one game apiece to play for you guys and show what we most enjoyed this year. Spoiler alert, Zoeker picked Metal Gear Rising before I could so I ended up defaulting onto another under appreciated gem from earlier this year, Anarchy Reigns. So come on by, tell us about your holiday haul and check out some games.

So, sure there are tons of objectively "good" games that came out this year, but what was your personal favorite game, the one you probably played the most?

Hello Games office flooded over the holidays

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST

The offices of Joe Danger and No Man's Sky developer Hello Games were flooded this week, as detailed in a series of tweets by the studio. "A river broke its bank nearby yesterday, and A LOT of water flooded in really quickly. A biblical amount. It was coming in the windows!"

Unfortunately, the damage was severe. "We've lost most things -- PCs, monitors, furniture, a door, a wall ... Lots of personal stuff lost (my console collection! my super rare Neo Geo Pocket!) -- that line between home and office is a little blurry."

Just going to show how great these folks are, Hello Games tweeted yesterday "We're taking stock today, but already I know we'll come back stronger :) -- all we'll need is a place to work and a machine to work on :)" and the official No Man's Sky Twitter had good spirits as well: "If one more person tweets 'every flood procedural' I'm gonna... lol each time. Gotta laugh init :)"

I sincerely hope the team had offsite backups but either way, this is going to be a messy situation to work through -- and what a time for this to be happening. Best of luck, and hang in there, guys.

The Stanley Parable now available on Mac

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST

Galactic Cafe's critically acclaimed adventure game, The Stanley Parable, has finally made its way onto Mac. It is available on Mac, it is not available on Mac (ha ha, see what I di -- oh, screw it).

The Stanley Parable will work on machines running OS X 10.8 or higher "right now," as noted by Gran PC; he also revealed that he's currently working on releasing a Mac demo for the game. That's nice.

I've been meaning to give this game a go. To those who've played it, how is it?

PS Plus starts 2014 off right with Don't Starve, Brothers

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST

I hope this holiday season has indeed been a happy one for you. Sony's keeping the good vibes going into next the new year for US PlayStation Plus subscribers with a few worth-getting additions to the Instant Game Collection.

Looking ahead at the free games of January, there's Don't Starve (PS4), DmC: Devil May Cry (PS3), BioShock Infinite (PS3), Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (PS3), Worms: Battle Island (PS Vita), and Smart As... (PS Vita).

I'm curious to see how Klei's fascinating survival game makes the transition from PC to console. And for all of the fuss made about DmC, I never bothered to play that. Good lineup here.

Steam sale: Dark Souls, DmC, Gone Home, Bastion

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST

I always forget that the holiday Steam sale goes a few days into January. So far, I've held strong, only buying Risk of Rain (which was the best decision I've made in a good long while; thanks for the peer pressure, Conrad). Today's featured games are familiar, but some of the prices are getting low to the point of absurdity. I'm looking at you, Bastion and Hotline Miami.

Daily deals:

  • The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing ($5.09)
  • NBA 2K14 ($14.99)
  • Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition ($5.99)
  • Anno 2070 ($7.49)
  • Killing Floor ($4.99)
  • DmC: Devil May Cry ($12.49)
  • Gone Home ($6.79)
  • Hotline Miami ($1.99)
  • Wargame: Airland Battle ($9.99)

The flash sales right now are: Bastion ($2.24), Unepic ($3.99), The Cave ($3.74), and Lost Planet 3 ($12.49). The last community vote ended up being Tower Wars ($1.99), and the current vote is between Spelunky ($3.75), Monaco ($3), and Antichamber ($5). Three fantastic games, but you know which one I'm going to suggest you go for.

Killzone: Shadow Fall's multiplayer is free this weekend

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

PlayStation Plus members who have yet to purchase Killzone: Shadow Fall will be given access to its multiplayer mode for free in an "extended open weekend" running from December 28-31.

Plus members can pre-load Shadow Fall in preparation for the open weekend right now; those taking advantage of the free weekend will have full access to Shadow Fall's multiplayer, including any competitions and tournaments currently taking place.

Guerrilla Games notes that pre-loading Shadow Fall for the open weekend will also cause users to automatically download single-player content (you can make it so that the multiplayer portion downloads first), though said single-player content will remain locked.

Anyone planning on taking advantage of this?

Final Fantasy VI mobile video makes me feel weird

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST

This Final Fantasy VI Mobile video found by sister site Japanator gives us a look at what the upcoming release will look like. Keep in mind that this is a stream capture from Jump Festa 2014, so the quality isn't tops. Still, you can see where they're going with the visuals for this version.

We'll have to get a better view to make a decent call, but I don't know how I feel about the look so far. Look, I'd play and love this game if it were made out of boogers instead of pixels. But nothing beats the original look.

The mobile version of Final Fantasy VI comes to Japan this winter on both iOS and Android, priced at 2,600 yen (about $25).

Nintendo pulls Pokémon Bank to relieve burden on eShop

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST

Ostensibly overburdened by an influx of holiday-induced traffic, the Nintendo Network became virtually unusable yesterday, as scores of eager new Wii U and 3DS owners piled onto the company's servers to set up their systems. And it looks like we're not out of the woods yet, as error messages continue to populate the screens of those attempting to use Nintendo's online services.

To reduce the load on the company's congested servers, the Pokémon Bank has been temporarily pulled from the Japanese eShop. The application was released there just yesterday and is currently scheduled to go live in North America and Europe tomorrow. Nintendo didn't indicate when the Pokémon X Y add-on would return, so players might be in for a bit of a wait to access the new features. Please be patient.

Music previews for Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 02:30 AM PST

We're still far away from the release of Persona 3 and Persona 4 dungeon crawling mash-up Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, but it's never to early to start lusting. Just by looking at the first screenshots I knew this game would have an awesome sound to it, and two new music samples on Famitsu confirm that.

The battle theme is upbeat and brassy, and complete with the series' now famous easily misheard lyrics. Nice tie? Is that what she said? I love it.

I like the new field music sample just as much. If we're going to be crawling dungeons, this kind of music is perfect. It's kind of spooky and mysterious, but still has that modern sound with the underlaid filtered beats. So good.

Check out both samples here (Windows Media Player required). Don't miss the new screenshots there while you're listening.

Final Fantasy X scenario writer wants a Final Fantasy X-3

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST

Kazushige Nojima, Final Fantasy X and X-2 scenario writer, wants another Final Fantasy X game. According to FF Reunion, in the "Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster Ultimania" book he said he "would like to see a sequel such as Final Fantasy X-3."

"If demand is delivered, there could be new developments," Nojima said.

I'm down. But what would that game be like? Maybe we could play Dresssphere dress-up with the guys of the game.

Ragnarok Online Elemental Tunes delivers large music fix

Posted: 25 Dec 2013 10:00 PM PST

After our look at the Ragnarok Online 10th Anniversary Package last week, I wanted to turn my attention to this year’s special release, dedicated entirely to the music of Ragnarok Online. Elemental Tunes features four elemental-themed discs containing the game client, unreleased soundtrack material, and two arrange discs, with one each dedicated to big-name Japanese composers and up-and-coming doujin artists.

You can see the fancy packaging and artwork above, but check out our review of the music collection below.
