| Tomb Raider fan film captures the brutality perfectly Posted: 25 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST Lots of fan films are great, but this Tomb Raider is above and beyond the average homage you'd normally see. The team at CanCinema did an amazing job, and it captures the brutality that the new Tomb Raider brought to the series. |
| Review: Capcom 30th Anniversary Character Encylopedia Posted: 25 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST [Update: The book is currently on-sale for just over $8] The people running the show at Capcom have been irritating fans and employees alike for years now -- burning bridges, nickle and dimeing consumers, canceling games, landlocking games, and basically carrying on like Tron Bonne on a Servebot kicking spree. Beneath these managers and directors are legions of Capcom employees that are madly in love the Capcom's pantheon of iconic characters and genre-defining intellectual properties. I'm betting it was one of these passionate Servebots that put the Capcom 30th Anniversary Character Encylopedia into motion. It's not a perfect collection, but it's still quite impressive. The attention to detail and inclusion of some of Capcom's most obscure characters speaks to the genuine love that went into this tome. Even the long time Capcom fans will find some fun new facts to bone up on. |
| Impale your enemies in Kirby: Triple Deluxe Posted: 25 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST Fact: Kirby games have always been fun no matter what. Even Crystal Shards had its moments! So I'm not surprised that Kirby: Triple Deluxe is looking like a ton of fun. This four-minute video gives us a great overview of what to expect, from the 3D effects of a hand smashing Kirby towards the screen, to a handful of new power-ups too. New powers include a rhino horn in which you can IMPALE YOUR ENEMIES, a bow and arrow, bells, and the ability to juggle. JUGGLE! There's over 20 abilities, with many returning favorites. Plus there's the super suck ability. Suck up the world into your mouth, whore. Also multiplayer! There's a versus mode that may as well be Super Smash Bros. lite. Seriously, look at it. Lastly, there looks at the rhythm-like mode involving King Dedede. Sweet. |
| Pale Machine Expansion Pack is games music games Posted: 25 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST The creator of Cloudface is working with the gang at Brain Gale to bring you a free game and corresponding song every Friday until Valentine's Day, when all eight songs will be compiled on a real life compact disc for you to enjoy. The first game is already out. It's by Mushbuh, and they're calling it Beokay. It's sort of a patience testing rolling text delivery system, until it suddenly becomes a fast paced shoot 'em up. You can play it here, and get the music here. This Friday's game is by Alex Hogan (Anodyne) and Alex Van Dorp, which is set to drop this Friday right here. Future games by Todd Luke (Winnose), Lu Blue (FILOFILODISCO), Jmickle (Coffee Mafia), Gib (Gulag Paradise/Moshimoshi) and Ben Esposito of Arcane Kids (Perfect Stride, Unfinished Swan) are set to follow. Don't be a party pooper! Just play the videogames and listen to the music if you want. |
| Zubaz is a secret boss in Shovel Knight Posted: 25 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST Last time I wrote a story about Zubaz, I royally goofed things up, requiring a lovely and talented man named "Woolie" to send me private messages until I got the story straight. I promise that I haven't made the same mistakes again, unless I have (in which case I apologize in advance). To be fair, the Zubaz situation is pretty complicated. He isn't just based on a rejected Street Fighter character design, adorned in bodybuilding workout wear he's named after. Zubaz is also the creation of the guys from the Two Best Friends Lets Play series. They backed Shovel Knight to at the Director's for a Day tier, and are working with Yacht Club Games to make Zubaz a secret boss in the game. Though there is absolutely now reason to think this could happen, I'm hoping this leads to Shovel Knight appearing in the next iteration of Divekick. Given that most of his game revolves around a very divekick-ish mechanic, it seems like a perfect fit. |
| Here's a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix Posted: 25 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST Here's a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix straight from the Jump Festa event in Japan. Sora, Roxas, Riku, and Namine are doing things with a bunch of Disney folks like Princess Aurora, Hercules, King Mickey, Captain Jack Sparrow, and others. As as reminder, this collection will contain freshly remastered versions of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix and PSP title Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix as well as the cutscenes from DS title Kingdom Hearts Re:coded. |
| The Nendoroid Luigi toy is oddly cute Posted: 25 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST Good Smile Company has finally revealed their Nendoroid Luigi figure. The toy comes with three faces, a Warp Pipe, Goomba, a Bullet Bill, a set of running and jumping legs, and a dust cloud effect prop. No price or pre-order info yet, but in the mean time here's a bunch of pictures of the new figure. Leave it to Nendoroid to make Luigi look cute. | Metal band Avenged Sevenfold is making a videogame Posted: 25 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST Well, I guess Avenged Sevenfold got the videogame itch after their ridiculous appearance in Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Hail to the King: Deathbat is an upcoming band coming from the heavy metal band. It's a game "inspired by classic dungeon crawlers" and taking inspiration from Avenged Sevenfold's music and artwork. Weird, but hey it doesn't look that bad. |
| Grand Theft Auto Online has received a festive update Posted: 25 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST There is snow all over Los Santos right now in Grand Theft Auto Online. Rockstar is celebrating Christmas by filling the game with snow. So much snow. Good luck driving! The update has also added a bunch of holiday-themed items. The clothing shops have a bunch of Christmas themed outfits, the Vespucci Movie Masks store has special Santa, Elf, Snowman, and Reindeer themed items that can be worn through January 5. | See a bunch of games get played with the Steam controller Posted: 25 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST Wet with anticipation for Valve's Steam Machine? While you're wishing for Santa Gabe to gift you the machine of the future you can witness YouTube user Trial By Game demonstrate a bunch of games played with the Steam Machine's controller. There's a bunch of games that have been demonstrated with the controller, from those that would work perfectly to those not so much. Above is Rogue Legacy, and below you can watch Typing of the Dead, DOTA 2, and Super Meat Boy, with plenty more over on the YouTube channel. All in all the controller doesn't look that bad! |

| The winner of Destructoid's best 2013 character Posted: 24 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST And now we present the award for best character of the year. The options this year were as interesting as they were broad, and narrowing down our list just to the nominees was painful enough, let alone the brow-furrowing which went into narrowing it down to a victor. Here are the nominees for 2013 character of the year.
And the winner is ... |
