| The winner of Destructoid's best 2013 adventure game Posted: 24 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST I like to think of adventure games as the games that make you think. They are the ones that keep you awake at night not because your pulse is pounding but because your brain is on fire. Here are the nominees for 2013 adventure game of the year.

| The winner of Destructoid's best 2013 role-playing game Posted: 24 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST No Persona 4: Golden this year? Well, it wasn't all bad. The year certainly wasn't slouching when it came to doling out 50+ hour time sinks. It started out strong with Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch all the way back in January and spiraled out of control since. We have had a healthy mix of console and handheld fare, eastern and western formulas. The vaunted "Waifu Simulator" that is Fire Emblem. A collaboration with Studio Ghibli. There's even a fully free-to-play game that's arguably better than Diablo III. More like Diablo Free! Here are the nominees for 2013 RPG of the Year:

| The winner of Destructoid's best 2013 platformer Posted: 24 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST The frustrating thing about these game of the year posts is they all follow the same format. First I'll tell you about what a great year 2013 was for games. Then I'll briefly talk in vague terms about the category in question, which in this case is platformers. Next I'll give you a refresher on all the nominees for the Best Platformer of 2013, as you furiously scroll to the bottom of the page instead of reading this text.
This is the part where I reveal the winner. |
| Want another gift for the holidays? Why not get Huge? Posted: 24 Dec 2013 11:30 AM PST About a month ago, Caitlin Cooke and I started a news show called Destructoid Huge News of the Week. It's sort of like if the producers of Sunday's with Sagat were in charge of the NBC Nightly News. Actually, that's exactly what it's like, for better or worse. Caitlin and I do the show for free, but the cost for equipment, shooting, editing, and all that other stuff couldn't have been met if it weren't for Huge members. I'd like to keep doing things like this, and more importantly, I'd like more people who like this kind of thing to get a load of it, just like I'd like Destructoid to keep going, and for more people who'd enjoy the site to be a part of it. If Papa Niero had his way, we'd be able to make all that happen on a much larger scale, with absolutely no ads at all. A purely subscription driven Destructoid would be a much better site, both in terms of content and delivery. There is a reason why HBO makes more interesting shows than CBS. When you don't have to worry about appealing to the lowest common denominator to keep your ship afloat, you can personalize content to your audience and take a lot more interesting risks in the process. So if you're still looking to give or a receive a gaming related gift this year, why not try a month of Dtoid Huge? It costs $3 for the month, or $30 for the year, and offers instant entry into all of our contests, exclusive content, custom layouts, and more. One subscription counts for Dtoid, Tomopop, Flixist, and Japanator. On top all that, 3% of your cash goes to charity. It's a neat thing. I'm really glad Niero made it happen. Happy Holidays everybody, and thanks for being a part of Destructoid. |
| The winner of Destructoid's best 2013 fighting game Posted: 24 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST There weren't a whole lot of fighting games this year, but the ones that did make the cut were mostly beloved by the community. We finally have a winner, but let's take a look at all of the hopefuls first. Here are the nominees for 2013 fighting game of the year.

| The winner of Destructoid's best 2013 multiplatform game Posted: 24 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST Unless you're filthy rich and have all the consoles, chances are you've missed out on a hot exclusive here or there. You probably would have loved to get your hands on that blockbuster du jour, if only you owned that other system. Trust me, we've all been there. Luckily, that's slowly becoming a thing of the past. There's more and more great games coming out all the time that we can all enjoy, regardless of our platform of choice. Here are our nominees for the Best Multiplatform Game of 2013:

| The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 story Posted: 24 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST From the moody and mysterious to the sublimely depressing to the hilarious and endearing, there were a lot of games this year that tickled our minds as much they drove our fingers through dextrous gauntlets. Represented are everything from surprisingly moving AAA releases to poignant pixel art pieces to sprawling JRPGs to, well, whatever exactly The Stanley Parable is. Here are the nominees for 2013 Story of the Year:

| The winner of Destructoid's best 2013 console exclusive Posted: 24 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST It was a great year for consoles. Not only did we get two new ones, but the Wii U steadily gained a killer library of software. That's not even including the strong year for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which offered up tons of great titles to fill up your time with. But at the end of the day, we had to choose just one game. Here are the nominees for 2013 console exclusive of the year.

| The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 community choice Posted: 24 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST Oh my god this was an amazing year for gaming. There were so many extraordinary releases from studios big and small that I may never have a chance to play them all -- talk about a wonderful, lucky "problem" to have! But of course, at the end of the day, only one game can take home the coveted Destructoid Community Choice Award. So after a week of intense voting, debating, and a surprising lack of name-calling, we are finally ready to unveil your pick for the best game of 2013. ARE YOU AS EXCITED AS I AM?! | The winner of Destructoid's 2013 Game of the Year Posted: 24 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST Boiling a year's worth of content down to ten top picks, as we did with our nominees, is taxing enough. Picking one as our Game of the Year? It's not easy. We covered a large swath of titles in our nominations, from the triplest of A to a turn-based strategy RPG to an indie adventure game made by a few people, and still there were plenty of amazing games left off. Tearaway. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Everything else you'll be complaining got snubbed in the comments. But pick we must and pick we did. Here are the nominees for the 2013 Game of rhe Year:

| The winner of Destructoid's best 2013 original concept Posted: 24 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST Boy howdy, there sure were some mighty fine and dangerous new ideas during this, the year of Luigi. While our patron saint may not qualify due to his age, these fresh faces are sure to leave you impressed. Or refreshed. Or confused. Or laughing. Or angry. Or frightened. Or confused again. So many emotions. Here are the nominees for the best original concept of 2013:

| The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 soundtrack Posted: 24 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST A great soundtrack can help make a great game legendary, and can even make a mediocre title memorable. In recent years, more emphasis has been put into crafting a noteworthy and fitting soundtrack for a game, and more composers have been receiving recognition for their work. Music can be beautiful, ugly, calm, energetic, foreboding, soothing, or any number of other things, and when done well it can make a scene or a sequence just perfect. There were a lot of great examples of music done well in games this year, but we narrowed it down to the following ten.

| The winner of Destructoid's best 2013 strategy game Posted: 24 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST Sometimes, the best strategy is to not play at all. This is not one of those times. Unless you value your spare time, because this year's wondrous array of strategy games will inevitably gobble it up in oodles like a bull in a Chinese restaurant. Fire Emblem: Awakening is still kicking my ass and making me regret playing on Hard/Classic with its Evel Knievel AI, Civilization V got a meaty upgrade, Dota 2 has consumed entire lives, and Enemy Within made me want to play XCOM again a month after beating XCOM. Here are the nominees for the Best Strategy Game of 2013:

| The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 visuals Posted: 24 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST There were so many desktop wallpaper worthy games this year. Heck, one of the entrants comes from a collaboration with Studio Ghibli. I've considered buying an old iPad and converting it into a digital photo frame because existing ones can't play animated gifs and I need Ghibli gifs in my life at all times. Fighting game animations, too. Someone with actual skills please tell me the easiest way to do this. The rest of you, enjoy looking at gorgeous stills from the best looking games of the year. | The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 PC exclusive Posted: 24 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST I just love the variety offered in this category every single year. No nominee really plays like another. Even Gone Home and The Stanley Parable HD have a similar control scheme, but their experiences are about as different as they come. Whether you enjoyed swapping with The Swapper, rejecting immigrants with Papers, Please, or trying to make sense of it all with Antichamber or Kentucky Route Zero, it has no doubt been another wonderful year for PC exclusives. Here are the nominees for the 2013 PC exclusive of the year.

| The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 portable game Posted: 24 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST I think I played -- and loved dearly -- more handheld games in 2013 than I have since the days of Game Boy. Or at least since last year, which gave me two of my favorite games ever, Gravity Rush and Persona 4: Golden. Still, it was certainly one of the harder categories for me to vote in. I picked up Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon during BioShock Infinite's midnight launch and half-joked it was my Game of the Year. Then more and more great handheld titles poured forth. Here are the nominees for 2013 Portable Game of the Year:

| The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 add-on DLC Posted: 24 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST Downloadable content is here to stay. Rather than bemoan those that constantly nickle and dime us for a new shirt or camo for a gun, let's celebrate those developers that create new story and content on top of the core experience that makes us want to re-insert that disc. | The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 shooter Posted: 24 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST Shooters are a big part of the gaming industry with the truckloads of money they bring for game companies. While certain parts of the shooting genre have been getting stale in recent times, it's pretty great to see some unique titles make it into our nominations this year. As a reminder, here are our nominees for best shooter of 2013:

| The winner of Destructoid's best 2013 co-op multiplayer Posted: 24 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST Sometimes, there is nothing better than getting together with friends, online or in person, and working together toward a single goal. Together, everybody either succeeds happily or fails hilariously. With the right game, it doesn't matter the outcome; everybody has fun regardless. Of course, as time has passed, more games have added cooperative multiplayer to their lists of features, and it often feels tacked on or unnecessary. The best co-op experiences are thoughtfully designed to enhance gameplay with more players, and in the best cases, they are the only true way to play a particular game. Plenty of great cooperative multiplayer titles released in 2013. Here are our ten favorites.

| The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 action game Posted: 24 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST 2013 was a big year for action with so many longtime running franchises that brought us sequels and reboots to games we've been enjoying for over a decade now. Plus, there were a couple of new games that made the cut that were all equally hard to put the controller down. Just one more level! As a reminder, here are our nominees for best action game of 2013:

| The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 racing game Posted: 23 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST It was a fairly slim year for racing games, but even if it hadn't been, the outcome would've likely been the same: Grand Turismo 6 vs. Forza Motorsport 5. | The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 competitive game Posted: 23 Dec 2013 10:00 PM PST Gaming brings us together in a number of ways, and the number one way is so we can beat each other up into a digital pulp. Humans are competitive by nature, and gaming can make us become the best fighter, trainer, soldier, assassin and over one another. Here are our nominees for the Best Competitive Game of 2013:
