Call of Duty: Ghosts update adds Heavy Duty mode

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST

Call of Duty: Ghosts received an update today across the PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3. A new Heavy Duty mode was added to multiplayer, plus there are new loadouts added to the Infected mode. Five squad points are granted to each soldier at the initial five levels of progression as well.

The Sniper Rifles now have a reduction in the flinch benefit with the Focus perk, and the ADS speed has been reduced and further adjusted to the Sniper Rifles. Lastly, Field Order adds 100xp on pickup, there's a fix for unlimited perks, and the invisible exploit has been fixed.

This is going to be a great week to play any competitive multiplayer game, by the way. So many people will be receiving games like Ghosts and are going to get their ass handed to them online.

Brentalfloss gives us Super Mario 3D World with lyrics

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

If you follow Brentalfloss on Twitter or Facebook, you may have noticed how obsessed he's been with the soundtrack to Super Mario 3D World of late. I figured it was only a matter of time before he gave it the "what if it had lyrics" treatment, and thankfully this Christmas Eve Eve, he's bestowed this gift upon us.

Brent's also been dabbling in composing for games, and while he's not been tied to a particular game as of yet you can check out some of his samples at his composer site. He's also hinted at a collaboration with ProJared and Pat the NES Punk coming soon called SUPER RIFF BROS, which they plan to reveal at MAGfest in a few weeks.

I need this sweet Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles NES mod

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST

Remember that awesome Mega Man NES mod? Creator Ryan Fitzpatrick is back, and this time he's appealing right to my childhood with his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle NES mod.

The system features the four radical heroes displayed on the top, and it's all backlit too. Plus, there's four themed controllers based on heroes in a half-shell. There are a ton of photos over on Ryan's Facebook, and you can bid on the console on eBay if you think this is worth a little over $1,000.

Alcohol makes the gaming industry go round

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST

Technically alcohol makes the entire world go round. Still, it's a very big part of the gaming industry. You know all the preview events we get to attend? Open bar. Always. In fact, a couple of the games Mr. Destructoid has appeared in is thanks in part to alcohol.

And such is the case with Telltale in how they got to make Tales from the Borderlands. Well, alcohol and the fact that The Walking Dead was such a gigantic runaway hit.

"We were backstage at the [2012] Spike VGAs," Steve Allison, senior vice president of publishing at Telltale Games, told Polygon. "And Gearbox was sitting at table one and we were sitting at table two -- we were there for The Walking Dead. We got to talking a little bit, and I don't remember when it the night it became, 'we should do this thing," but it happened over a few cocktails.

"We could have easily left it and chalked it up to too much tequila, but we followed up when we got home. And they remembered the conversation. The Borderlands universe has so much story potential, all those great characters. There's a narrative there in Borderlands 2 but it serves a certain purpose, and we can serve a difference purpose with it for fans of the franchise."

Gearbox was onboard for the idea, and once The Walking Dead Season 2 and The Wolf Among Us start to wind down, we'll be hearing more of the Borderlands and The Game of Thrones project. Check out the full Polygon interview to see how Telltale is approaching the Game of Thrones game too.

Here's how the pop-up adventure Tengami plays

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

Not all point-and-click adventures force us to piece together seemingly random objects in a specific context in order to progress, but I'll always have memories of puzzle logic that even at the time didn't seem quite so logical. A more straightforward or otherwise minimalistic approach has always felt ideal to me, which is why I'm looking forward to Tengami, that game from ex-Rare staff which is visually reminiscent of a pop-up book.

"The first trailer did a good job at showing the game's atmosphere, calm and tranquil nature, as well as showing off the beautiful art," writes developer Nyamyam. "It didn't explain how you play Tengami very well. With the new trailer we wanted to focus more on showing people how you interact with Tengami's pop-up book world and give a glimpse at some of the puzzles you encounter." And it's looking quite nice, I have to say.

The game will be out first on iOS early next year, followed by PC, Mac, and Wii U releases at a later date. After watching the trailer, I'm not sure if I want to fall asleep or go meditate.

Nintendo brings high-capacity Wii U GamePad battery to US

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST

Nintendo's high-capacity battery for the Wii U GamePad has been available in other regions, but it's only now being sold to gamers in the United states.

Priced at $32 (shipping not included), this 2550mAh battery is said to provide eight hours of use, up from the standard GamePad battery's promise of three to five hours. I've always found it to be closer to three than five in practice which is just low enough to be a regular nuisance.

Publishers can disable cross-region gifting on Steam

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST

It appears that Valve will now allow companies to restrict their games on Steam from being gifted or traded to users in different regions. The AllowCrossRegionTradingAndGifting flag has been found in the database entry for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance on Steamdb (it's a "no.")

This is a major disappointment for folks simply wanting to give a game to their friend, but given the price and content differences between regions, it's no surprise that Steam users have been using region-free game trading/gifting to their advantage. It is worth pointing out that this does not affect retail keys and as of now only applies to South America and Eastern Europe.

Review: Borderlands 2: How Marcus Saved Mercenary Day

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

Borderlands 2 has had quite the long tail of content for a noncompetitive first-person shooter. Since its release a bit over a year ago, it has seen two additional characters, four story DLC packs, two level cap increases, widespread release of previously retailer-exclusive content, dozens of new cosmetic customization options, and most recently, the series of holiday-themed Headhunter missions.

Like T.K. Baha's Bloody Harvest and The Horrible Hunger of the Ravenous Wattle Gobbler, How Marcus Saved Mercenary Day takes place in a single new area and consists of only a couple of missions. Where Bloody Harvest was centered around Halloween and Wattle Gobbler focused on Thanksgiving, Mercenary Day features a Christmas theme. With it comes a very Borderlands take on snowmen, carols, and the spirit of the season.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 celebrates Feastivus this week

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST

Ever since getting partway through its final world, I've been ignoring Plants vs. Zombies 2 -- but Plants vs. Zombies 2 has not been ignoring me. Those push notifications haven't compelled me to return yet, though PopCap's plans for the game during Christmas week might.

The five days of Feastivus lasts from December 24 - 28. Each day, there will be a special holiday level in PvZ 2 with unspecified prizes. The super cute promotional video above has me curious enough to at least check in on the first day. I hope the levels are as well put together.

Steam sale: Borderlands 2 GotY, Shadowrun, Splinter Cell

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST

A few of today's Steam deals are steep enough to tempt me into buying games I wouldn't normally have much if any desire to own. A familiar trap, yet one I continue to fall for.

Daily deals:

  • Borderlands 2 Game of the Year Edition ($14.99)
  • Trine 2: Complete Story ($1.99)
  • Castle Crashers ($3.74)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist ($29.99)
  • Shadowrun Returns ($8.99)
  • Contagion ($3.74)
  • Arma III ($35.99)
  • Reus ($2.49)
  • Amensia: A Machine for Pigs ($9.99)

The flash sales are Dead Space 2 ($4.99), Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Ultimate Edition ($10.19), Brutal Legend ($1.99), and Cities XL Platinum ($5.99). The community choice winner is Solar 2 ($1.99) and the current vote is between Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Chivalry: Modern Warfare, and Fez. I have a feeling the latter will take it, but let's all go for Brothers.

PS Plus: Sonic Racing Vita and another holiday sale

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST

The PS Store update for tomorrow will mark the introduction of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed into the Instant Game Collection. This freebie for subscribers is specifically the PS Vita version of the rather amazing kart racer, and Metal Sonic and the Outrun track are being thrown in, too. Make some time this week to nab this, if you've got a Vita.

As for the holiday sale, I hope you're in the mood for more indie games:

  • Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse ($3.75)
  • DuckTales: Remastered ($7.19)
  • Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two ($10)
  • Proteus PS3 / Proteus Vita ($5.94 each)
  • Dragon Fantasy Book I & II bundle ($8.39)
  • Dragon Fantasy I PS3 / Dragon Fantasy I Vita ($2.50 each)
  • Dragon Fantasy II PS3 / Dragon Fantasy II Vita ($7.34 each)
  • Hotline Miami PS3 / Hotline Miami Vita ($1.49 each)
  • Diablo III ($35.19)

Unless my eyes deceive me or there's been some sort of mishap, it looks like both versions of Hotline Miami are free for PS Plus members right now in the US. Huh.

Hardline 004: Yoshi-flavored smoothie

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

Hamza got back from vacation just in time to chat about a bunch of Nintendo announcements on this week's Hardline, including a Dynasty Warriors-style Zelda game and NES Remix. The gang also shared its thoughts on Steam Early Access titles like the DayZ standalone alpha blowing up the charts, PAX's so-called Diversity Lounge, and this messy YouTube Content ID situation everyone is on about. Also, smoothies.

Due to some technical issues with the recording, the audio-only episode isn't up on the usual feeds yet -- but you can still subscribe on iTunes and RSS. With Christmas falling on Wednesday, we won't be doing a new episode this week. Happy holidays!

If you were one of the people to ask about timestamps, we do have those now thanks to our gracious producer Bill Zoeker. Find those in the YouTube description.

Vita sales see boost thanks to PlayStation 4

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST

The launch of the PlayStation 4 has greatly influenced PlayStation Vita sales, according to Sony.

After the PS4 launched, PS Vita sales saw a 68 percent increase, followed by a 65 percent increase the very next week. Ben Law, Sony's senior product manager, revealed that, "PS Vita sales wise we are continuing to see strong week-on-week growth since our latest campaign kicked in."

The campaign Law is referring to was launched around the same time as the release of the PS4, and focuses heavily on the Vita's cross-functionality features (such as Remote Play).
