More Batman: Arkham Origins headed to Puzzle & Dragons

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

A second in-game collaboration between Batman: Arkham Origins and Puzzles & Dragons is set to burst, beginning tomorrow, December 23. Like the previous event, 11 characters -- from the world of Arkham Origins -- will invade GungHo Online's addictive free-to-play puzzler in a special themed dungeon.

Taking place Blackgate Prison, players will take pit their crews up against -- and with the chance of adding to their teams -- heinous villains such as The Joker, Bane, Solomon Grundy, and Deathstroke. Additionally, heroes like Batman, Robin, and Catwoman can be obtained in a special in-game Rare Egg Machine.

The first time Warner Bros. and GungHo teamed up, I though it was pretty amusing -- even amid the strangeness of the pairing. The dungeons were pretty challenging for my team at the time, and I only ended up with two -- albeit useful -- boy wonders.

I've let a little metaphorical dust settle on my team as of late in Puzzles & Dragons, but these little events always seem like a good enough reason if any to hop back in to the action.

The Batman: Arkham Origins and Puzzles & Dragons event concludes January 5, 2014.

Muse DLC comes to Rocksmith 2014

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST

In keeping with tradition, Ubisoft has released another five-song pack for Rocksmith 2014. This time around the pack features tracks from Muse, and are:

  • "Supermassive Black Hole"
  • "Stockholm Syndrome"
  • "Time Is Running Out"
  • "Hysteria"
  • "Muscle Museum"

The Muse DLC will cost you $11.99. Alternatively, the tracks can be purchased separately for $2.99 each. Those on the PS3 are currently not able to purchase the DLC as a pack -- for some reason it won't be hitting the PlayStation Store until January 7, though you can still purchase the songs individually.

Darks Souls and mythology

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST

[Dtoid community blogger Last Scion of the blah blah blah shares an awesome analysis of Dark Souls from a mythological perspective. Want to see your own blog appear on our front page? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon]

In the Age of Ancients, the world was unformed, shrouded by fog.
A land of grey crags, archtrees, and everlasting dragons.
But then there was Fire.
And with Fire, came Disparity.
Heat and cold, life and death, and of course...
Light and Dark.
Then from the Dark, They came, and found the Souls of Lords within the flame.
Nito, the first of the dead,
the Witch of Izalith, and her Daughters of Chaos,
Gwyn, the Lord of Sunlight, and his faithful knights,
and the furtive pygmy, so easily forgotten.

With the Strength of Lords, they challenged the dragons.
Gwyn's mighty bolts peeled apart their stone scales.
The witches weaved great firestorms.
Nito unleashed a miasma of death and disease.
And Seath the Scaleless betrayed his own, and the dragons were no more.
Thus began the Age of Fire.
But soon, the flames will fade, and only Dark will remain.
Even now, there are only embers, and man sees not light, but only endless nights.
And amongst the living are seen, carriers of the accursed Darksign.

Thus begins Dark Souls, a game that I, for lack of a better term, absolutely f*cking love. I could go on and on about it. However, there is something else that I love. Mythology. This is a thing that Dark Souls is rife with, and which I (amongst others) have attempted to clarify. You see, nothing is very clear in Dark Souls. There are some things that are unlikely to ever be explained.

This is a reflection of Hidetaki Miyazaki, the director of Dark Souls, and his experience with Western fantasy books. A fan of fantasy and mythology, he was unable to fully understand what he was reading, leaving holes for him to fill in with his imagination, which is what we are often required to do. Now, in creating an entirely new world, it is understandable that one would draw from existing sources, so I've compiled some of the characters and other things that I believe have a strong connection to existing legends.

Typing of the Skullgirls announced for Skullgirls Encore

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

Perhaps spurred by the recent invigoration that Sega has brought back to the Typing of the Dead series, the upcoming re-release of Skullgirls -- Skullgirls Encore -- will include an all new mode dubbed "The Typing of the Skullgirls Encore."

Revealed by the game's design director Mike "Z" Zaimont, during a live demonstration of the game over at EightySix's Twitch account yesterday, the mode will be available for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC versions of Skullgirls Encore when it launches next year.

In the "Typing of the Skullgirls" mode, once a super move -- meter fill automatically in this mode -- is executed, players must partake in a timed typing exercise that awards damage bonuses based on quickness. Perfectly typed words will increase a super's damage output by 1.5 times, were as a "right but not perfect" typed words will do normal damage. Misspelled words will reduce damage dealt by 10 percent. On the defensive side of things, damage is sparred or lowered by players typing correctly against an AI controlled opponent that issues a super move.

When Skullgirls Encore releases next year, the new mode will be available to play in Story, Arcade, and Versus. Online and tournament support will not be included.

Anal probes and abortion kept South Park from AU rating

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

Over at IGN, three reports have been obtained detailing the difficulties Ubisoft had with securing a ratings classification for South Park: The Stick of Truth by the Australian Classifications Board, before finally receiving an R18+ rating.

In the reports, the ACB references depictions of child sexual abuse and other content "...which due to the interactive nature of the sequence, warranted complete refusal of classification." The board additionally stated “[i]mplied sexual violence that is visually depicted, interactive, not justified by context or related to incentives or rewards is not permitted.”

The scene which, according to the ACB, depicts child sexual abuse titled Alien Probing features "...buttock-nude male characters, captured by aliens, repeatedly having an oversized, phallic probe thrust into their buttocks. The probe is repeatedly thrust in and out, mimicking sexual thrusting and accompanied by squelching sound effects."

The scene that contains the additional thematic content, that warranted refusal, takes place in an abortion clinic and features the player taking hands-on control of a doctor.

“The player controls the doctor’s hands and repeatedly thrusts a length of wire between the patient’s splayed legs (implicitly to bring about an abortion) before applying a vacuum device to the patient’s genital region (below screen),” explains the report. “A minority of the Board is of the view that, due to the interactively of this sequence, it is very high in impact and offends against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that it should not be classified.”

In the numerous failed attempts to get the game classified in Australia by Ubisoft, the ACB did acknowledge that it was aware that the content in the game was based on similar scenes from the television show and are “satirical in tone and intent,” but do to the interactive nature exceeded “what can be accommodated within the R18+ guidelines.”

Namco Bandai has unveiled the debut trailer for Tales of Zestiria, and it has dragons. The role-playing game is currently in development for the PlayStation 3 and will ostensibly release in 2015 in commemoration of the series' 20th anniversary.

In keeping with that theme, the title's creators are aiming to take the franchise back to its roots with the latest entry. It will feature characters created by all four of the series' designers, animations from Ufotable, and a medieval fantasy setting.

Sup Holmes puts it on the pizza with Kyle Reimergarland

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 06:25 AM PST

[Update: Fjords is on sale for just $1.31 until midnight tonight, so get it for cheap while you can.]

Today on Sup Holmes we welcome Kyle Reimergarland to the program. According to Kyle's bio, he "...lives on the Olympic Peninsula, teaches 2nd grade and makes games, is married and spends a lot of time identifying objects for a 2-year-old human."

Fjords, Kyle's latest project, took the development community by surprise with it's combination of unassuming visuals, impressive sound design, beautiful guide, and "you program the world" gameplay hook. In Fjords, you play as a pizza delivery person who seems to exist inside of an Commadore 64 game. It's feels impossible to deliver all your pizzas in the world as you find it, but by accessing computers located in various places, you can utilize some simple text-based programming to alter the environment, give your character different abilities, and more. If you enjoy coding games in the same way you enjoy playing games, Fjords will speak to you in a way that few other things have.

Kyle's made a boatload of other games, like Together Fight! Friendly Hat Spirit, the Shoot the Butts, Punch the Butts 3D, Punch Forever, Super Punch Everything, Milder's Totally Bogus (Rabbit) Journey, Owww, and a lot more. Most of them are free over on Lasercatz, so check 'em out, then head back here to talk with me and Kyle at 1pm PST/4pm EST.

Three more enter the mix in Soulcalibur: Lost Swords

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

I like Soulcalibur II HD Online, but boy oh boy is the online a nightmare. Because of this, I'm holding my breath with the free-to-play offering Namco is whipping up for the next installment of their fabled fighter: Soulcalibur: Lost Swords.

That said, I have to say the game is looking quite stunning. Namco's first foray into the free-to-play fighter market, Tekken Revolution, has fared decently in my eyes, but overall lacks the refinement a proper sequel tends to offer. With the platform that Soulcalibur: Lost Swords is set to debut on next year slowly making its ways out too, I additionally worried Namco may quickly forger about this game as time trickles by.

Until then, enjoy these new screens and three videos of the game's latest editions: Astaroth, Nightmare, and Pyrrha.

Will I ever see Hwang again?

Sunday gaming deals: Steam, Xbox, and more

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! There are gaming deals going down today only, this very Sunday.

Well really they are just today's deals of some on going sales over at Steam, Green Man Gaming, and at XBox... but hey, we're lazy and we like to have them all listed in one little spot.

So without further typed words to get in your way (I know you've already skimmed past this, and I'm just typing here to make myself feel like I'm doing more work. Wow, that was a long sentence... hmmm maybe I should delete all this. But really at this point that would take me way more time than typing these extra words. Then again, I could have just selected a chunk with my mouse and hit delete. But that would cause me to have to lift my right hand off the keyboards prematurely. Oh well time to end this) here are today's gaming deals.

Star Trek Online expansion coming in 2014

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST

In Star Trek Online's latest blog post, Perfect World has teased that a new expansion for the MMO will be launching sometime in late 2014.

The post, which serves as a sort of end-of-year summary, noted that 2013 has been the most successful year for Star Trek Online and thanked its supporters for making it so. Perfect World also said that fans' "...enthusiastic support has put another expansion on the schedule for late in 2014. Planning is in the early stages, so there is not much to share just yet, but we’re really hoping to provide something big for you all."

That's all they're saying right now. Any ideas about what they might have planned?

Regarding STFUAJPG

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

[Dtoid community blogger Pixielated shares some thoughts on the meaning of STFUAJPG. What does it mean to you? --Mr Andy Dixon]

I've been hanging out here for a year now. Yep, I joined Dtoid the day the world was supposed to end. December 21st, 2012 was supposed be the Apocalypse, but no bombs fell, there were no supermutants, and the Four Horsemen didn't show up to spread pestilence, war, famine or collect souls. Kinda disappointing, but I have gotten to see plenty of worlds end since then in games.

Rather than write a recap of the year, though, I want to talk about STFUAJPG.

A former Square Enix composer worked on Puzzle & Dragons

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST

So what’s the big stink about Puzzle & Dragons? I was fascinated by the title before it blew up into a huge success for Japanese publisher GungHo, mainly because of Romancing SaGa/Culdcept composer Kenji Ito’s involvement. He provided a number of tracks for the game, and, in fact, is the only artist to put out music related to the blockbuster title.

The album comes from his own label, gentle echo, with a number of arrangements in tow. But is the soundtrack worth picking up off iTunes Japan?
