Explore space in Rodina, pre-release version on sale now

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

Rodina, a space exploration game, is now being offered for sale in an pre-release state. Taking a tiered, "pay-what-you-want" pricing structure, you can have the current build by spending a minimum of $1, but access to updated versions of the game (including the final version) will require a minimum price of $15.

And if you're balking at paying anything to play it, there's also a meaty, one-hour time-limited demo which you can check out before plonking down any cash.

Check out the above video to see some of my experience with the demo. As noted, I used the controller, though I have tried keyboard and mouse also and the ship is pretty challenging to control with either scheme. I'm not sure I have what it takes to get good at it, but there seems to be a whole vastness of space out there to explore, so I'll probably keep trying.

Drakengard 3 gets lengthy new trailer for Japanese launch

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

If Sony is going to make good on its promise of ten year life cycle for the PlayStation 3, it's going to need a little help from games like Drakengard 3 that continue to trickle out for the venerable system in a post-PS4 world.

The action role-playing game won't be arriving on western shores until sometime next year, but just made its debut in Japan this week. While we await the localized release, feel free to feast your flower-eyes on the latest promotional footage for the title.

Review: Rush (Wii U)

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

I love playing games on the Wii U, but I run in to the same problem with every one of them. I find myself looking down at the screen on the GamePad more than up at the beautiful HD visuals on the TV in front of me. I play games on the Wii U as if I'm playing a handheld like the 3DS; head down, shoulders slouched, never looking up. It's a weird sensation, as I always feel like I should be watching the screen, but I'm a creature of habit.

Evidently, Two Tribes has ported its PC puzzle game Rush over to Wii U with me in mind. The entire game focuses solely on the GamePad's screen itself, and utilizes its unique control scheme to that effect as well.

Oh, and it's excellent.

Retro City Rampage 3DS priced and dated, PC port updated

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

Retro City Rampage is coming to the 3DS in Q1 2014 for the low, low price of $9.99 in North America, the UK, Australia, and New Zeland. That's a heck of a bargain for a game with this much content. A friend of mine once described Retro City Rampage as Warioware crossed with classic GTA. Sounds like about as good of a fit for the 3DS install base as you could ask for.

It took a huge amount of work to get Retro City Rampage on the 3DS, but VBlank has also found the time to update the PC version of the game, allowing for mouse and PS4 controller support and other upgrades. On top of all that, VBlank has also given us all permission to monetize our  Lets Plays of Retro City Rampage without risk of copyright claims from Youtube.

Here is yet another patch for Battlefield 4

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST

DICE has rolled out a new Battlefield 4 update for the Xbox One, several days after pushing out another one for PC.

Much like the latest one for PC, this Xbox One patch fixes the "kill-trading issue" where two players were able to kill each other at the same time. Among the list of other bugs fixed, which can be viewed below, is one where players would suddenly transition into Spectator Mode while playing Defuse and a "common crash" that occurred during gameplay.

Review: World of Warplanes

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

Free-to-play is still a bad word these days with a lot of gamers. But it doesn't have to be. Titles like Path of Exile have shown that providing a model where most of the content is free, but the cosmetic upgrades are paid, can facilitate an environment that not only respects their players, but influences them to want to spend money.

Lying somewhere in-between is Wargaming, one of the biggest F2P publishers out right now. Their newest game, World of Warplanes, is mostly a great example of how to do free-to-play right -- it just needs to fix a few other things first.

The Superman principle, piracy and more with Crazy Viking

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 03:50 AM PST

Last Sunday on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we were talking to Taron Millet and Kristofor Durrschmidt of Crazy Viking Studios -- two developers with some of the most interesting origin stories in gaming. Taron got his start on Atari computers, and Kris got his first job by showing German porn comics to Mormons. That could only lead to good things.

Over the course of their careers at Griptonite, they worked on the Lego Star Wars series, Spyro, Assassin's Creed, Shinobi, and a lot more. After Griptonite was bought out, their focus changed from handheld adaptations of home console releases to freemium mobile games, so Taron and Kris went off on their own with their first independent game, Volgarr the Viking.

We talk about the importance of giving the player character weaknesses for the player to overcome by building their skill, the idea of utilizing the "arcade" pay system on PC/Console games, the advantage of sprite-based graphics in 2D action/platformers, what it was like to work on so many legendary franchises, how it felt to see that only 4% of people playing their game bought it, the old Griptonite Vs Wayforward rivalry, hints about their next game, and a lot more.

Thanks so much to Taron and Kris for hanging out, and join us tomorrow at 1pm PST/4pm EST when we welcome Kyle Reimergartin (Fjords) to the program. It's going to be a holiday flavorite.

Here's a little Sniper Elite 3 in your eye

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST

A new trailer has released for Sniper Elite 3 and, along with the typical one-man-army machismo, you can enjoy a high resolution bullet to the eye, rendered in painstaking detail.

Man, do I not want to see that. I'm not passing judgment on anybody for whom this is exciting; I got plenty hyped up when Mortal Kombat sported a similar feature, after all. But the eye is such a sensitive spot, it makes me a little queasy. I suppose I should just be thankful game designers have so far shown some restraint toward the genitals.

MovieCat 2 is finally out on iOS

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST

After years of waiting (seriously), OtherWise Games has finished their development on MovieCat 2, the sequel to the original MovieCat. It's ostensibly a quiz game, involving text and graphical questions about new and old films.

The best part is that it supports two-players and a ton of variety, hosting exercises like naming the films a set of costumes are from, or picking out a scene consisting entirely of cats in place of humans. It's one of my favorite quiz franchises for a reason -- it's super easy to get into, and you can pick your favorite categories from 20 question types.

Also, cats.

Let's go sledding! My top 10 ice levels

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST

[Dtoid community blogger bbain loves ice. Ice, baby! Want to see your own blog appear on our front page? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon]

Happy holidays, everyone! I hope you're staying warm during these cold winter months. It's been around 25ºF and snowing where I live, but luckily I'm inside my warm apartment, wrapped up in a blanket, and watching the snow slowly falling outside.

Snow and ice can be beautiful sometimes (when you don't have to drive in it!), and I've always appreciated videogames that are able to capture that beauty, letting me experience winter wonderlands from the comfort of my living room. Ice levels in games usually share certain qualities in common; they may have you slipping and sliding on the frictionless ice, your vision may become obstructed by a blizzard, or maybe your movement will be hindered by the snowdrifts. These things can be annoying (especially the ice!), but a well-crafted ice level can also be a beautiful thing.

I'd like to take a moment on this snowy day to honor some of my favorite winter-themed levels in videogames. So grab a warm blanket, make a cup of hot cocoa, and get comfortable as I take you through some of the best, and chilliest, levels around!

BangBang: The handgun Pokemon

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST

Take a grim look at the result of pocket monster designs growing past carrying capacity.

Also, Weeniepuss actually looks like it could be a Pokemon. And would be considered a better design than many Pokemon that exist.

[Thanks, Parasmio!]
