| January release likely for EverQuest Next Landmark alpha Posted: 20 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley has pinned the EverQuest Next Landmark alpha as happening next month. "It's looking like [the alpha] is going to start sometime in the last half of January," he tweeted. That's naturally subject to change, but, fingers crossed. "He warned us. Sorta. Not a surprise to see this. :)" responded director of development for EverQuest David Georgeson. Now that I know what Landmark entails, I'm so down for this. The creation tools appear quick enough -- and the end results pretty enough -- that I actually want to build stuff for once. @j_smedley [Twitter via Massively] |
| A classic Natural Selection map has returned Posted: 20 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST I completely and utterly missed out on Natural Selection back in the day and although I have only ever played its follow-up, it is cool to see the classic map Eclipse revitalized for Natural Selection 2. Graphics sure have come a long way since Half-Life. This is of course a free update, available now on Steam. To that end, the game is down to $6.24 (Windows/Linux) during the holiday sale. I wholeheartedly recommend it if you're willing to put in the time to learn how to play -- there's a bit of a curve (or cliff, as it were). The usual fixes and the like are also a part of this patch, which you can read about at the link below. Return to Eclipse in Natural Selection 2 [Unknown Worlds] |
| Fashion Alert: Who Wore It Better? Posted: 20 Dec 2013 01:30 PM PST The Daisy-Dukes-and-a-'Beater look is back in a big way this season! Who's rocking the outfit better, Funky Kong or Poison? |

| Someone built a 3D printer inside Minecraft Posted: 20 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST When I first saw this video of a 3D printer within Minecraft, I was blown away -- but it was getting late, and I learned long ago not to publish at night. It's since come to my attention again, and I'm taking that as sign enough. The video, created by YouTube user ItsJustJumby, was made possible by an astounding 20,000+ command blocks alone, and that's just one of the component types. How one goes about thinking up such a project, much less putting it all together and sticking with it to the bitter end is beyond me. What dedication. To download the world and try the printer for yourself, head over here. |

| It's never a good idea to steal Mario's power-ups Posted: 20 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST Three iconic videogame heroes try to take on Mario with his own weapons. They should have known better than to cross the master. |
| Posted: 20 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST I know this cole gallery isn't new to some of you, but it bares repeating. I love bienni-all of these magestic cabbage shots. I'm losing my head over them. The grandeur just makes this seem a magical savoyage. I do believe I'm getting the vapors. I need a napa. Happy Friday before Christmas. It's not too late to use these as Christmas cards for in-person gift giving. I hope you all get everything you deserve. |
| Posted: 20 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST It isn't difficult to see why The Banner Saga secured over $723,000 via Kickstarter. The Viking-themed tactical role-playing game is just gorgeous, resembling something along the lines of a classic Disney picture. And it vaunts some serious pedigree too. In addition to being developed by a team of BioWare veterans, the music comes courtesy of Austin Wintory, the composer behind the Grammy-nominated and BAFTA-winning Journey soundtrack. Yes, that certainly seems like a recipe for success. |
| Cute runner Buddy & Me debuts on Android for free Posted: 20 Dec 2013 09:45 AM PST Back in April, we first heard about Sunbreak Games, a studio founded by former Metroid Prime and Halo 4 designer Jason Behr. As a bit of a curveball, Sunbreak's first title would break from Behr's tradition of sci-fi first-person shooters and instead be a family-friendly runner headed to mobile devices. Buddy & Me showed up on Kickstarter and narrowly met its funding goal of $40,000 during the final hours of the campaign. The title launched on iOS devices in September, but Android users had to wait another three months before being able to play with that big, yellow fluffball up there. The good news for those with devices running Android 2.3 or later is that Buddy & Me is free for its debut weekend through the Amazon App Store. Interestingly, this deal is available for backers and non-backers alike. After this coming Sunday, the price will increase to its standard price of two bucks. |
| Live show: Just Cause 2 MP with Vinesauce Posted: 20 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] If you've ever caught any of my live shows where I've played a heavily modded version of Just Cause 2, you'll know that this is hands down one of my favorite games to broadcast, and a hit with our live crowd. Well, it would seem that things just keep getting better and better with this title, as the amazingly ambitious multiplayer mod for the game is now available on Steam. So, it should come as no surprise that tonight, we're going to hook up together and run it through it's paces with the community on Mash Tactics. Better yet, we'll be joined by an amazing special guest, Vinny, from Vinesauce.com. If you have never heard of this fellow and his hilariously entertaining crew, do yourself a huge favor and check out their YouTube channel, you won't be disappointed. A couple of my personal favorites include the Japonies 2013, and Skate 3 Derp videos, but I'm pretty hooked on all of their awesome content, as it never fails to put a smile on my face, and I truly can't wait to finally collaborate with them this evening. Come hang out with us, and join in on the crazy shenanigans at Dtoid.TV! QotD: What are some of your most insane multiplayer moments? |
| Killer Instinct dev working on sci-fi action shooter Posted: 20 Dec 2013 09:15 AM PST Let's unravel this polymer of nucleic acids and LinkedIn resumes. First, concept artist James Paick showed off some sci-fi art from "Unannounced IP" linked to Double Helix. Some NeoGAF snooping uncovered a LinkedIn page for Double Helix visual effects artist Allen Will. On it, there's an "Unannounced FPS Project" for 360, PS3, and PC. A 2011 promotion to Senior VFX Artist brings with it the addition of, "Unnanounced Action Shooter" for "Next Gen, PC," along with the Strider reboot. It's possible that that first-person shooter was transitioned into the next gen action shooter. It's also possible that it's vaporware. At least some concept artists got paid for some cool sci-fi works. Killer Instinct dev Double Helix's secret "next gen" action shooter revealed [OXM] |
| Posted: 20 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST Ninja Theory is one of the most interesting developers in the business. They have the opportunity to develop high-budget, low-grossing games more often than pretty much any other studio in existence -- then move on to another publisher to try their luck, where almost any other studio would have gone bankrupt. But still, they persevere, and somehow, someway, they always come back for more. So how do they fare with a mobile free-to-play energy-filled freemium brawler? |
| Club Nintendo Japan gets Year of Luigi goodies Posted: 20 Dec 2013 08:45 AM PST Not to be outdone for once by the US Club Nintendo, Club Nintendo Japan will be getting its own Year of Luigi items to celebrate everyone's favorite Mario character's year. These include a 3DS XL case, notebook and pen combo, a puzzle full of Luigis on a green background, and a Dr. Luigi microfiber cloth set all full of the Mario brother's branding. I'm still super bummed because I knew I had enough coins for the Luigi's Mansion statue that went up in the US store the other day, but in actuality 500 of my coins had expired last month. So, no awesome Weegee statue for me. I really hope these items make it to the West at some point (especially seeing as how the Year of Luigi has officially been extended) so I don't feel as bad for missing out on any one part of the Luigi festivities. | StarCraft II patch 2.1 is all about clans Posted: 20 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST Blizzard has detailed the upcoming StarCraft II patch 2.1 that targets clan players. An in-game solution for scheduling events for groups and clans now exists, allowing club officers or owners to mark a date, title the event, set the duration, and provide a description all within StarCraft II. Groups are also able to create and upload a custom 255 x 255 club icon, which should get interesting. Some gamers tend to run wild with this kind of freedom of expression. Going a step further, however, are clan decals. These are only usable by clans and previously showed up flat on the map in such a way that players were making decals that looked like units. Now, Blizzard will display them in-game as a floating icon (shown above). The patch isn't finished yet, but it's up on the public test realm for testing. | Nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 original concept Posted: 20 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST Boy howdy, there sure were some mighty fine and dangerous new ideas during this, the year of Luigi. While our patron saint may not qualify due to his age, these fresh faces are sure to leave you impressed. Or refreshed. Or confused. Or laughing. Or angry. Or frightened. Or confused again. So many emotions. This is the last of our 21 nominee posts. Thank Luigi. Get ready for Monday, December 23, when the flood gates burst and all of our hot, slimy winners come slipping out. "Happy birthday," they'll screech gutturally through not-yet-formed vocal tracks as we slap them on the ass with a Destructoid seal of quality sticker, as you look on in disgust and awe. Mostly disgust. |
| Posted: 20 Dec 2013 07:45 AM PST Sonic Lost World got some Yoshi's Island downloadable content this week and Sega is promoting the new content in such a '90s way. I love it. |
| Dragon's Crown updated with new difficulty and content Posted: 20 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST Have you run out of things to hit in Dragon's Crown? Perhaps it's time to go back, as ATLUS has released an update for the game on PlayStation Network today which gives players a whole lot more to do. A new difficulty level, "Ultimate," has been added for players who thought that the challenge didn't stack up to previous Vanillaware titles, accessible once players clear the ninth level of the labyrinth. The level cap has also been increased from 99 to a whopping 255, so that everyone can continue to feel like they're making progress toward something. Finally, a whole new dungeon has been included, called "Tower of Mirages," which is randomly generated and reported to have, "tens of thousands of levels." That ought to keep you busy for a while. | Friday Night Fights: Happy Holidays Posted: 20 Dec 2013 07:20 AM PST Happy Friday! And what a Friday it is! It's the Friday before Christmas! Hooray! (You can tell I'm excited by the number of exclamation points I've used so far). Anyway, since it's the Friday before Christmas, I was wondering, "What do you want Santa to bring you?" A new console? New games? World Peace? A bathtub filled with ice cream that never melts and never goes empty? The secret to life itself!?!? WHAT DO YOU WANT!?!? Let me know in the comments, and before any of you tell me Santa isn't real, let me just leave you with this; "nya nya nya nya nya nya yes he is! I'm not listening, I'm not listening!" -From myself and the rest of the Destructoid staff, have a Wonderful Holiday! |
| XCOM and Sid Meier titles discounted in 2K mobile sale Posted: 20 Dec 2013 07:15 AM PST Publisher 2K has a holiday sale going for its mobile games now through Thursday, January 2. This is a great opportunity to pick up the iOS version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, though, fair warning, it's a comparatively expensive download for the Apple App Store. Still, it's XCOM!

| Nicalis teases with Cave Story toys Posted: 20 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST This ought to perk up the ears of Cave Story fans. The Twitter account for Nicalis recently posted the above image showing toys based on characters from the indie darling and asking if people would like to have a set of them. And I would like to have a set of them very much, thank you for asking. Sure, I might be in my mid-thirties now and, sure, my wife might roll her eyes at my populating the house further with incredibly nerdy (and, to some extent, obscure) gaming stuff. But that doesn't change how I want to create a scene in which Curly rides Balrog like a bronco. I'm a sick man. |
| A game, not a sport: Real Sports talks eSports again Posted: 20 Dec 2013 06:45 AM PST No, I don't think competitive gaming needs approval from something like Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. But that doesn't mean common ground shouldn't be reached. The show's recent look into League of Legends was actually decent, I thought -- Soledad O'Brien came in with an open mind, which is more than I can say of the correspondents in the clip above. The question "Do you have any statistics on how many of those people also go to Star Trek conventions?" really says it all. And if it doesn't, then that off-the-charts like-to-dislike ratio on YouTube says the rest. The real shame here is the missed opportunity for an actual, productive discussion about whether or not eSports can be considered sports. A little elaboration, please. |
| Google's top picks for best games of 2013 Posted: 20 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST Google has picked the best games of 2013 for the Google Play store. Here's the list:
I've played three of the listed games here which were Rayman, Anomaly 2, and Plants Vs Zombies 2. All fun games, and I'll be looking into Juice Cubes now thanks to this list. Rest I'm not sure about. What have you played from this list that's actually fun? |
| Nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 add-on DLC Posted: 20 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST Substantial DLC can be a really great thing. Beyond the veil of microtransactions and penny-pinching, some studios can really craft some great meaty content worth of your buck. From full-on expansions to thrilling campaigns, some developers have made it really easy to keep playing. Here are the nominees for best add-on DLC in 2013. |
| Massive: The Division on PC won't be just a port Posted: 20 Dec 2013 05:45 AM PST Anyone that's concerned that the PC version of Tom Clancy's The Division will get the short end of the procedurally destroyed stick can breathe a bit easier. According to the developers, PC's getting the same love and care that consoles are receiving. In a blog post on the game's website, the studio says "As you know, Massive has its roots in PC development. We are working hard and we want to make sure that we have a very high quality experience on PC. You can be sure that our PC version won’t be a port, but a full-fledged, optimized version! We want to create the best game possible regardless of what platform you play on." Considering that it took a while before we were even sure The Division wasn't a console exclusive, things seem bright for the PC crowd. If this isn't just lip service, it's probably going to look dang pretty on high-end rigs. Community Q&A: Snowdrop [Tom Clancy's The Division] |
| Namco Bandai seems to want Dark Souls for mobile Posted: 20 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST "We'd like to bring Dark Souls to mobile, but it's very difficult because the guys at From Software are very much console oriented," Namco Bandai director of global strategy for mobile Alex Adjaj told Digital Spy. "To change their mind about it, it takes quite a while." Wait, what? As you'd expect, there was pushback from the developers, who felt that a mobile release would require new controls and "therefore it won't be Dark Souls anymore." According to Adjaj, "At the same time, you have a growth in controllers for mobile. I think it's not an impossible case scenario to see a Dark Souls game coming to mobile at some point." If I try really hard, I might be able to conceive of a Souls game on mobile that wouldn't be a total disaster, but such a mental exercise pushes the limits of my imagination. I sincerely hope Namco isn't too set on such a title coming to fruition -- that's just asking for trouble. That mobile money isn't worth it if it deteriorates one of the strongest game IPs around. | Castlevaniamania takes over today's Xbox sales Posted: 20 Dec 2013 05:15 AM PST Today's Xbox Live sale is just like your old drinking buddy that got a girlfriend and can't be bothered to make time for you anymore -- totally whipped. Three Castlevania titles and a whole lot of downloadable content make up day four of Microsoft's offerings. On discount are Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD for $7.49, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for $3.39, and Castlevania: Harmony of Despair for $5.09. Harmony of Despair also has a smattering of price-slashed add-ons if you feel so inclined. I imagine this is a decent jumping off point for anyone that wants to expand their familiarity with the series and/or castles. However, I think I'll just stick to Castlevania II: Simon's Quest on my NES, thank you very much. Not like I'll ever beat that damn game anyway. Countdown to 2014 Daily Deal Day 4: Castlevania Collection [Major Nelson] |
| Posted: 20 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST Republique was quite the ambitious Kickstarter project. With big names like Jennifer Hale and David Hayter attached, not to mention the million dollar budget, to say this stealth adventure promised quite a bit is an understatement. Having played the first of five episodes, I can safely say that most of the lofty goals have been met, but there is a bit more that's yet to be seen. |
| Steam Holiday Sale: Fez, Far Cry 3, Chivalry, Crysis 2 Posted: 20 Dec 2013 04:45 AM PST Day two of the Steam Holiday sale provides more deals, and more chances for game blogs to put up filler content because holy crap there is like nothing to talk about during the holidays:
As for flash sales, Music Creator 6, Divinity Dragon Commander, Project Zomboid, and Eve Online are all discounted right now. If anything, go get Far Cry 3. One of my favorite games of last year, and it's just gorgeous on the PC. |
| Persona Q: Shadow of Labyrinth gets adorable new trailer Posted: 20 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST You've heard of Persona Q: Shadows of the Labyrinth, right? It's basically a chibi spinoff of the series, involving bits and pieces of Persona 3 and 4, and it's heading to the 3DS next year. Based on the initial reveal and this new trailer, it looks adorable. The footage is looking great so far, provided that you're cool with the character designs (and the two new characters, Zen and Rei). In addition to the new footage an official site has opened up, promising more info in the future in addition to some character bios. Persona Q [p-atlus.jp] |
| Nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 soundtrack Posted: 20 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST Though it is often de-emphasized in favor of graphics and gameplay, a great soundtrack can help elevate a game to legendary status, and is often the most fondly remembered element of a game when reminisced on years down the line. Hearing a tune can even elicit vivid memories of the emotions and actions associated with the song. These ten soundtracks not only fit their respective games well, but wonderful in their own rights. They complement the games beautifully, and at their best enhance the experience in a way that only appropriate music could. We will be listening to these years down the road. |
| FireFall board votes out co-founder Mark Kern Posted: 20 Dec 2013 03:45 AM PST Co-founder and CEO of Red 5 Studios, Mark Kern, has been voted out of the company behind FireFall "effectively immediately." Mark was also removed from the board, and no longer has any authority with Red 5. The story comes via an email sent to employees obtained by Game Front, which you can read for yourself below. The troubled free-to-play shooter has been going through a lot of issues, from layoffs in September that saw a 10% reduction in staff, to the suspension and retooling of the PvP element that only drew in 3% of players. BREAKING: Red 5 Board Votes Out Co-Founder Mark Kern As CEO [GameFront] |
| All Destructoid shirts are now $17.95! Posted: 20 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST All t-shirts on the Destructoid store have been dropped down to $17.95! We've lowered the price down, saving you a couple of bucks. Sure, $2 isn't much, but those $2 can now be spent on a whole bunch of other things. Like cheap Jack in the Box tacos. Or a soda. You can eat tacos and drink soda and as these foods cover your naked torso, you can use one of our t-shirts to cover up your horrible mess without having to take a shower and continue looking hot. Right? Meanwhile, our hoodies are still $34.95, and we're still offering free worldwide shipping for any orders over $60. Oh, and there's one new hoodie that's going for $24.95. Can you find it? I'm sure you can find it. Just go look. LOOK! |
| Up to 50% off from the Square Enix Online Store Posted: 20 Dec 2013 03:15 AM PST Square Enix's online store is offering up to 50% on select games. You have from today to January 5, 2014 to save, and while supplies last. Here's some of the more desirable deals
Most notable is how damn cheap Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy XIV are right now. Plus, A Realm Reborn got a gigantic update this week so there's a ton of new content worth exploring. Way more games on sale over on the Square store, go check them out. |
| Counter-Strike: Global Offensive sees improved de_cbble Posted: 20 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST No map is more iconic of the Counter-Strike franchise than de_dust, with its multiple paths through its tan and brown desert marketplace. Another classic map is making a comeback in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but not without some substantial changes to its layout first. The map, de_cbble, will still put players in a cobblestone castle, but now with new pieces of cover and new routes to bomb sites, both of which alleviate the map's problem of the destruction targets being too easy to hold. Of course, the map will also get a fresh coat of paint as well. Dave Johnston, the original level designer behind de_cbble, is pleased with the changes. He admits that he tried to mimic de_dust too closely, and ended up with a map whose scale was completely wrong. He describes this updated version of his old map as looking "utterly amazing." | Mario Warfare shows that Princess Peach can kick your ass Posted: 20 Dec 2013 02:30 AM PST Beatdown Boogie's wonderful Mario Warfare series has been chugging along, and we last left off with Princess Peach learning the way of the gorilla with Donkey Kong. Since then, Mario and Luigi discovered the Smash Club, with Mario rising to the top as the ultimate Smash champ. Then all of a sudden episodes five and six were released this past week, featuring a Princess Peach kicking some series ass against Mario. With episode six, we finally get the Beatdown Boogie style of awesome gun fights as the battle against Bowser and his forces heats up. |
| Check out the Stryder mech from Titanfall Posted: 20 Dec 2013 02:15 AM PST Time for a new Titanfall mech reveal. This time it's the Stryder, another one "designed" by Hammond Robotics. The Stryder is said to outperform all other Titans in speed, acceleration, and agility. Plus it can secure rapid deployment objectives faster than other Titans. The skinny frame makes me think it's going to have some pretty weak defenses, which balances out how fast this giant future robot will be. Titanfall drops on March 11, 2014 in North America, and March 13 in Europe for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC. |
| The Mega Man Legends 3 8-bit project has a new trailer Posted: 20 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST Some time ago, a Mega Man Legends 3 8-bit demake project was launched in honor of...well..you know. Assisting with the project are two the original artists and composers of the franchise, which should probably help put this on your radar. It's been a while since we've seen some progress, but a new trailer has just been released with some gameplay, and it looks great! I see some homages to Toad Man's stage and Frienders, as well as some 8-bit Servbot love. I can't wait to play the final release in 2014. |
| Nordic Games resurrecting MX vs. ATV series Posted: 20 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST The THQ fallout saw Nordic Games purchase Darksiders, Red Faction, Destroy All Humans!, and MX vs. ATV earlier this year for $4.9 million. Now, Nordic is making some moves with their new IPs by bringing back the MX vs. ATV series with MX vs. ATV Supercross. Nordic has assembled a team of former MX vs. ATV staff, with the development studio based in Phoenix Arizona. The press release notes that it's "no coincidence the team is based" out of Phoenix as that's where this series all began back in the mid-90s. Then the press release made this horrible joke that actually made me smirk: "Perhaps one can be forgiven for borrowing from the well-worn cliché: the Phoenix has truly risen from the (digital) ashes." At least they didn't use Daft Punk lyrics to make the pun. The team is lead by Ken George, plus the development team includes veterans such as Dave Dwire, Chris Gilbert, Mike Mamula, Brad Bowling, Scott Hofmann, Justin Walsh, and David Knudsen. The team is also maintaining existing MX vs. ATV Alive and Reflex code in order to bring back as many features as possible such as multiplayer on consoles, Motoclub Depot, and more to be announced. MX vs. ATV Supercross is due for release in 2014 as a downloadable title, and will be hitting the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows, Mac, and Linux. |
| Deus Ex: The Fall is now on sale for a buck Posted: 20 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST That Deus Ex mobile game The Fall is now $0.99 on iTunes, which is a decent price to check it out at. It basically pares down the Human Revolution experience into a mobile offering, but it still has that "stealth, wits, or brawn" style of gameplay with decent (but not ideal) touch controls. The game still isn't on Google Play, which is odd considering the developer released a statement saying it would be coming to Android later this year. How about bringing it to the Vita? Deus Ex: The Fall [iTunes] |
| Blizzard has delayed the Hearthstone open beta Posted: 20 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST Bad news for those of you who wanted to play Hearthstone as soon as possible without an invite -- Blizzard has delayed the open beta until January 2014. Blizzard notes in a blog post that they don't want to rush the game, and want to be double sure that it's ready for wide testing. If you opted into the beta before December 16th however, they're apparently sending "everyone" invites, so check your spam folder if you haven't gotten one yet. The opt-in for the closed beta will end on January 7th, until the open one begins. So yeah, get on that! Hearthstone is pretty fun for what it is. Hearthstone Update - Open Beta [Battle.net] |
| HIYA! Funky Kong confirmed for DKC: Tropical Freeze Posted: 19 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST Shortly after confirming a playable Cranky Kong in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Nintendo has finally confirmed the existence of another character that was long rumored to be in the game -- Funky Kong. Nintendo hasn't said whether or not he'll be playable, or operating in a similar fashion to previous games where he simply facilitates the travel between different worlds. Since Cranky is out adventuring, Funky could be manning the banana coin shop as well. Who knows! Either way it's great to see him in action again. Who's next? Candy or Swanky Kong?
