Don't have time for Pokemon X/Y? You're not alone Posted: 19 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST The way the trainer grabs the Pokeballs bulging out of his derriere alone is worth it. I feel his pain, though. I haven't been back to Pokemon Y since abandoning it six or seven badges in.
The new Mass Effect exists in a playable state right now Posted: 19 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST A new entry in the Mass Effect series, developed by BioWare's Montreal studio, is currently playable. Not by us outside the studio, of course. BioWare Edmonton and Montreal general manager Aaryn Flynn tweeted, "Great time playing the next Mass Effect game in Montreal. Ambitious. Beautiful. Fresh but recognizable. And fun!" An interesting little tease when we know little beyond the fact that it doesn't involve Commander Shepard and that we shouldn't call it "Mass Effect 4," to which I propose, "Mass Effect More." At least until they give us more -- information, like a name. We do know that it will run on the Frostbite 2 engine and, with the new engine, a lot of the systems are being rejiggered. The team has also said its "'borrowing' a lot of game systems from DA3," which isn't even releasing until late 2014, which is part of the reason why it's mildly interesting that the new Mass Effect is allegedly already so playable. Anyone hoping they tilt the the scale either more towards RPG or more towards shooter? Want something else entirely? The Next Mass Effect Game Is Playable Right Now [GameInformer]
Perfect World Entertainment expanding to consoles Posted: 19 Dec 2013 01:30 PM PST With the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, this may just be the console generation that gets serious about MMOs. Publisher Perfect World Entertainment has announced its plans to get into console development, both with existing games currently out on PC and upcoming titles. "Bringing our titles to consoles is a natural progression for us, and we can't wait to set a new standard for console MMORPGs and other genres," said CEO Alan Chen. Specific games were not named -- those are said to be divulged next year -- but some of Perfect World's current crop of games are Neverwinter, RaiderZ, Star Trek Online, Rusty Hearts, and Jade Dynasty. For that matter, Blacklight: Retribution is already available for PS4 -- though it was self-published by developer Zombie Studios for that release.
Owners of Mojang's Scrolls can gift a copy to a friend Posted: 19 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST If you own Mojang's Scrolls, you will be able to give a copy to a friend as a gift this holiday season. All you need to do is log into your Mojang account, and click on the "Send to a friend" button. A code will be sent to the email that you wish to gift the game to, and the receiver will have until January 31, 2014 to redeem the code. I think it's awesome that Mojang is doing this, because it could basically double the number of people who own the game. That's if everyone sends out a key to a friend, and if you don't have someone to send it to I'm sure you can find someone on reddit or our forums. Don't let that free game go to waste! Own Scrolls? Give it to a friend for free! [Scrolls Blog]
What do you get in the Call of Duty: Ghosts Season Pass? Posted: 19 Dec 2013 12:30 PM PST Here we have a quick overview video displaying the content players will receive when they pony up for the Call of Duty: Ghosts Season Pass. It encompasses four DLC packs including maps and weapons, as well as an episodic "Extinction" experience, and throws in an exclusive DLC pack with a new character head and some other features (including a reticule, which I didn't realize was the kind of thing we were doing for DLC nowadays). All that for $49.99. They're also offering a little something to those who are planning to upgrade their Call of Duty experience to the new console generation. Season passes will carry over from PS3 to PS4 or Xbox 360 to Xbox One at no additional charge until May 31, 2014.
Dark Souls II will be a 'good experience on PC' Posted: 19 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST Given that Dark Souls was only ported onto the PC after a vociferous campaign by fans, it was no surprise to me that the PC version felt lacking. Although many problems were fixed by the modding community, Dark Souls II producer Takeshi Miyazoe has said that From Software has learned from their initial foray into the PC market and has told Edge that Dark Souls II will be "a good PC experience for PC gamers." "The current plan is [to allow] players to choose whether they want to use keyboard and mouse or a controller," Miyazoe explains. "Both options will be available." Dark Souls was clearly designed with a controller in mind and considering most PC gamers I know have an Xbox 360 controller as standard, that isn't a drawback. Still it's good to have options. The original Dark Souls port was hampered by low-res graphics and a lack of graphics and control options most PC games have. Miyazoe explains that their lack of familiarity of the PC market and the rush to get the port released hampered their ability to polish up Dark Souls on the PC. It's understandable for a Japanese developer but it's still good to see Dark Souls II will be on an equal footing with the console versions. Hopefully the level of challenge will still be as high as ever, as our expectations certainly are. Dark Soul's producer says PC version was rushed, problems were expected [Edge]
Dr. Luigi, Hyrule Warriors, NES Remix & Kingdom Come Posted: 19 Dec 2013 11:45 AM PST Hey gang! Sorry I wasn't around on Tuesday, but there wasn't a whole lot of news -- so here's a rundown of today's big news, including yesterday's big ol' Nintendo Direct, that new realistic medieval RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and the Xbox One's upcoming documentary series on the E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Atari 2600 game. No, seriously.
New Thief trailer introduces us to the Queen of Beggars Posted: 19 Dec 2013 11:30 AM PST As one of the first big titles coming out in 2014, it's no surprise to see another trailer for Thief arrive on our doorsteps. This time we're being introduced to the secretive Queen of Beggars as she narrates the woe of The City. It's a grubby place, seemingly infested with disease and squalor but there's still plenty of loot to be stolen. It's not the first time we've seen snippets of the Queen -- she was shown in the trailer that debuted during the VGX -- but here she seems like she may have bigger plans for Garrett. After that VGX trailer, Josh wasn't too impressed with the look of the game, which is understandable. I'm hoping the moddable UI will let me make the game as challenging as I'd want it to be and that The City feels fleshed out with enough detail and character to make it worth spending time there.
BioWare gives a status update on Dragon Age: Inquisition Posted: 19 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST Before its teams head off for the holidays, BioWare has shared where it's at with Dragon Age: Inquisition. Since the game's last big push at PAX Prime, the studio has gotten to a point where the main storyline is playable from start to finish. For reference, the final game is scheduled for next fall on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. In addition to the screenshots below, BioWare posted some more behind-the-scenes pictures, a number of which are centered on environments. "It is very important to me that the game cover a large variety of locations," said executive producer Mark Darrah. "Not only does it expand the possibilities of our storytelling, it also gives us an opportunity to show a lot of different things. In a game that places a lot of emphasis on discovery, this is very crucial." If there's on thing I can say about Inquisition, it's that BioWare is putting the Frostbite engine to good use. Coming off of Dragon Age II especially is quite the leap forward. Mark Darrah: An Update on Dragon Age: Inquisition [BioWare]
New Monaco update streamlines campaign, tweaks levels Posted: 19 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST Whilst it was well received by critics, sold over 275,000 copies and I did enjoy my first hands-on experience with the game, Monaco sadly never hooked me in. Maybe it was the lack of regular co-op buddies or some confusing level design but I wish I could give the game another shot. A big, free update will maybe encourage me to do exactly that. Developer Poketwatch Games has posted an update on its blog showing some interesting stats, specifically a breakdown of how many players were reaching the end of Monaco's chapters and indeed finishing the game. Realizing it may have had some issues in communicating its mechanics to the players, Pocketwatch has gone back and streamlined levels in a new enhanced mode. Players who enjoyed the original Monaco levels can still play the Classic mode but I'm certainly happy the developers went and had another look at Monaco and worked out what could be done to encourage players to keep playing. It's interesting to a developer take the scalpel to its own creation and do some editing and tweaking after release. There's also new leaderboards and PvP options included too and Monaco is currently 80% off in the Steam sale at £2.39/$2.99 so even with my reservations, it's still worth purchasing.
Pre-orders open on Steam for Metal Gear Revengeance Posted: 19 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST The PC version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will finally arrive in a few weeks, and Steam began offering pre-orders earlier today. If your plan is to play the game on launch day, you may as well buy now, as Konami is offering an introductory savings of 33% off its (already budget) price of $29.99 until 10am Pacific tomorrow. Afterwards, the savings drop to 20% off, where it will remain until the game releases on January 9, 2014. I very much enjoyed my time with Revengeance, though I never did go back for the DLC content. Still, when I feel the urge for some slashy-slashy action, it's probably the game I'll pull off the shelf for the foreseeable future. Hell of a lot of fun. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance [Steam]

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] Tonight's weekly blast from the past on Mash Tactics, is one of my all-time favorite games ever, River City Ransom. Since River City Ransom: Underground got funded on Kickstarter, I've been dying to jump back into the original at some point with our live crowd, and this evening, much to my delight, that time has finally come. Come hang out with us as we punch and kick our way through a variety of gangs in an attempt to rescue River City High from their nefarious clutches. Also expect more than a few trips to the local malls to upgrade our abilities, and of course the occasional trip to the sauna to relax after a hard day of whooping some ass. I've always thought that this game was ahead of its time when it was released, and to me, it still stands out as one of the best experiences to be had on the NES. If you somehow missed out on this amazing game way back when, check it out tonight on Dtoid.TV! QotD: What were some of your favorite titles on the NES?
Runner 2 plays exactly how you would expect on the Vita Posted: 19 Dec 2013 09:15 AM PST Bit.Trip Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien launched very early on in the year for just about every platform under the sun. We reviewed it, and really liked it. Not long after that, Gaijin Games announced that Runner 2 would be making its way to none other than the PlayStation Vita. After quite a long wait, it has finally made its way to the handheld right at the tail end of the year for $9.99. After spending some time with the new Vita version, I can tell you that it's just as good as you remember it. No significant compromises were made for the visuals, it's locked at 60 FPS, and the OLED screen compliments the game beautifully. Unfortunately, the game is not Cross-Buy or Cross-Save compatible, and there's no additional content or added control benefits on the Vita, but it doesn't need them. It's a fantastic game that can stand on its own -- and does -- that feels great to play with the Vita's physical controls. If Runner 2 was a game you enjoyed immensely before and wouldn't mind paying for again, or still have yet to check it out, then there's no reason to pass up the Vita version. Should you decide to pick it up, just be careful not to throw your poor handheld against the wall once the difficulty really ramps up.
Destructoid's game of the year 2013 community choice poll Posted: 19 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST All week long we'll be bringing you the Dtoid staff's nominees for various game of the year genres and categories, and tacked on to each will be a community choice poll where you can weigh in with your choices for which games you think should win. But because Game of the Year is such a weighty category, we decided we'd best give it its very own post! Below are many of the most noteworthy games released this year. Go pick your favorite! Just fill in your choice, click the vote button, and then hit the comments to argue amongst yourselves. We'll be pulling quotes from the community when we recap the votes next week, so if you liked a game, sound off! Tune in December 23 for the results. Have fun!
Ranko Tsukigimes Longest Day has a giant evil Pomeranian Posted: 19 Dec 2013 08:45 AM PST Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day will serve as the concluding piece to Short Peace, a four-part animated anthology from Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo. I need to see this film so badly. Just look at the art in those trailers. Meanwhile, we also have a longer look at Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day, which will have its own share of anime cutscenes, it seems, as well as some almost indistinguishable 3D art that looks 2D. I assume the giant, angry Pomeranian comes from Tokyo Jungle director Yohei Kataoka, who is directing. Some other notable talent involved: Suda51 (Killer7, Killer is Dead) is the scenario writer, Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill, Sine Mora) is composing, and Yusuke Kozaki (Fire Emblem: Awakening, No More Heroes) is among the character designers. I need this game (and film!) so badly. It's going on sale January 16 in Japan. A domain registry from a few months ago hints at the possibility of localization for Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day, which would be a welcomed longest wait.
Voice actor says he's working on new Saints Row Posted: 19 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST Actor and comedian Jay Mohr said on Twitter yesterday that he was contributing to a new Saints Row. Not that anyone was expecting Volition to stop making these games all of a sudden. "About to do my voice over work for new Saints Row video game. #showbiz" he tweeted alongside a photo of a recording booth. The first question that tends to come up in these situations is whether or not this is actually DLC instead of a full-fledged game. I'd expect Mohr to know the difference, but we'll see. He previously voiced Ultor Corporation's Dane Vogel in Saints Row 2. Saints Row 5 in the works? [GameSpot]
Nintendo Download: 3D Streets of Rage Posted: 19 Dec 2013 08:15 AM PST It's time for more Sega 3D Classics this week! But first, the Wii U gets Knytt Underground, Castlevania (NES VC), a Little Inferno discount ($4.99), and a Nano Assault Neo demo. There's not a whole lot to ponder over but at least it's something, and I bet a lot of people haven't played Knytt yet. The 3DS is the clear winner yet again, with 3D Streets of Rage, 3D Shinobi III, Banana Bliss: Jungle Puzzles, Winter Sports 2013: Feel the Spirit, and Crash'n The Boys Street Challenge. You'll also be able to pick up Brunch Panic and World Conqueror 3D demos. The 3DS eShop is also having a Christmas sale, including the Guild titles, Renegade Kid, and a bunch of other games, so hop on and check it out. Ok, so it's not a killer week per se for the 3DS, but Sega has done a great job so far on its 3D Classics.
Nominees for Destructoid's best 2013 character Posted: 19 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST 2013 had no shortage of interesting characters. From Welsh fairies, to two wisecracking brilliant twins, to companions that were so much more than they seemed, a number of games were significantly enhanced by their cast. Whether they were brand new takes on old tropes or just a new shine on a classic tale, without further ado, here are our nominees for best new character of 2013.
New trailer for Nosgoth shows off alpha action Posted: 19 Dec 2013 07:45 AM PST I have to admit that I was a bit surprised by the existence of Nosgoth, as I expected the Legacy of Kain franchise to have been left in a dustbin to be forgotten. And I certainly couldn't have predicted the next move for the series would be an online multiplayer combat game. This new trailer shows off footage from the game's closed alpha test, currently in progress, and it appears to be an action-packed experience. You can still sign-up to participate in tests if this is something you're keen on. I'm intrigued to see where they go with this and if anything interesting is added to the setting, which was always my favorite part of Kain, and to find out if there's still unlife in the old boy.
Here's what Steam Machines look like on the inside Posted: 19 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST The folks at iFixit have taken one of Valve's 300 prototype Steam Machines apart and the results, while about what you'd expect, are still pretty cool nonetheless. It's remarkable just how much they're able to fit in such a small box. The site also did a teardown of the still rather strange-looking Steam Controller. I can only imagine what a pain it'd be to have to put that thing back together. Steam Machine Teardown [iFixit]
| Videogames Clubhouse: RIP MVC and other acronyms Posted: 19 Dec 2013 07:15 AM PST If you've ever seen the Gentlemen's Club you're already well aware that I'm hot garbage when it comes to fighting games. Apparently I've become notorious due to this fact. So earlier this week when Phil and Manny asked me to play Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 I just about died. Sadly, I was outvoted so I'll be spending two hours getting absolutely wrecked by people who are good at fighting games. If this sounds like a trainwreck you'd like to get in on you can come cheer me on over at Dtoid.tv at 2pm pst.
God have mercy on my poor baby soul. |
Nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 co-op multiplayer Posted: 19 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST Even though gaming runs the gamut from solitary experiences to highly competitive titles, many have a soft spot for getting together with friends on a couch and working together toward some shared goal. Some games lend themselves to cooperation, and others still only truly shine when the player count increases. These ten games made the cut for being some of the best cooperative multiplayer titles of 2013. Whether you are sharing the experience with somebody across the country or across the living room, these great games are even better with a buddy.
Impressions: Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Beta Posted: 19 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST Despite the raging financial success of Diablo III, many fans were not impressed. Whether it was the decreased amount of high quality loot, the poorly-thought-out auction house, or the over-streamlining of character progression, there was a lot to complain about. Having said that, I still enjoyed Diablo III for what it was completely devoid of any influence from the auction house. Over that period of time however I noticed that a lot of my friends were dropping out from the game like flies, so Blizzard had to do something eventually to help save and improve the game. Step one is removing the auction house, starting March 2014. Step two seems to be the expansion Reaper of Souls, which comes with a few major changes of its own. But is it enough to bring back jaded Diablo fans?
Contest: Win a copy of Killer is Dead signed by Suda 51! Posted: 19 Dec 2013 06:01 AM PST What a day! To win one, just leave a comment below telling us your favorite moment from any Suda 51 game! Limit one entry per person, and please do tell us which console you prefer (Xbox 360 or PS3). You have until this Sunday, December 22 at 11:59pm Pacific to enter, and the contest is open to anyone in the U.S. Good luck! And don't forget, our Huge members get automatic entry into all contests (as well as a bunch of other awesome perks). It's pretty great!
Exclusive: Suda 51's top 7 Killer is Dead moments Posted: 19 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST Killer is Dead was a day one purchase for me, though from what I hear from my peers, a lot of consumers didn't have the confidence to pick it up upon initial release. With the gift giving holidays just around the corner, and all of your "must-have" games already safely in your possession, maybe this is just the kind of game you'd like to own but not pay for. Tempted to send your mom out to the local strip mall with instructions to ask the man at the counter to sell her one shiny new copy of Killer is Dead to stuff in your stocking? Check out Suda 51's spoiler-packed favorite moments and see if you're not convinced, and check out our contest for a signed copy of the game while you're at it.
Evil Genius is back on Facebook of all places Posted: 19 Dec 2013 05:45 AM PST I love me some Evil Genius. Enough that I'm willing to try Evil Genius Online, which is Rebellion's free-to-play approximation of the classic base-building game. It's playable now in open beta on Facebook and while it's got the usual baggage that goes along with Facebook gaming, it is still unmistakably Evil Genius. Not the total disaster it could've been, then. "When we launched the closed beta, we made it a priority to reach out to fans of the 2004 Evil Genius PC game rather than a wider audience," said Rebellion CEO and creative director Jason Kingsley in a press release. "I think it's fair to say the Evil Genius community voiced some initial concerns about our direction, but it's these same gamers that not only got behind the game, but played a big part in making it better." More than anything, playing this has given me the unshakable desire to go play the original.
Play with light and darkness in Shadowmatic Posted: 19 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST Shadow art is one of the cool things I've seen on the Internet and marveled at, knowing I could never come close to creating something similar. Taking three-dimensional objects and arranging them in such a way that they cast a different two-dimensional image in shadow is just mind boggling. Though I may never create my own pieces of shadow art, with Shadowmatic, I may be able to play around with it and feel partly awesome. Presented with an abstract, almost nonsensical 3D object, players must rotate it until they find the orientation that casts a recognizable shadow on the wall. Soon, multiple objects come into play, and one must worry not only about individual object orientation, but position relative to other objects. As a neat touch, the room that a given puzzle takes place in provides a hint toward the solution. For instance, the "5" in the video above exists inside a geometry classroom. Shadowmatic is currently in development for iOS devices, to be released in March of next year, but developer Triada Studio Games has stated that it will begin work on an Android port after the iOS launch. Though it may not end up on any Game of the Year lists, it looks like it could be a really cool little game to carry around everywhere.
Max: Curse of Brotherhood should prove an endearing romp Posted: 19 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST I quite liked the first Max and the Magic Marker. It was a cute little 2D game that let me draw things and crush enemies with them. I was surprised to hear of a sequel, Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, especially as one of the only smaller games Microsoft trumped up at its E3 conference this year. Of course, this isn't exactly a small game. In fact, it's practically an entirely different game, and not just because of the jump to 3D graphics. Gone are your freewheeling drawing powers, replaced by a series of contextually based drawing puzzles. There's also a villain that looks like a cross between Destructoid's Conrad Zimmerman and some sort of decrepit slug monster.
Warhammer Online is no more, refunds being offered Posted: 19 Dec 2013 04:45 AM PST Well, that's it. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning has gone offline for good; we all knew it was coming. You know, even though I didn't play Warhammer Online, I feel kind of sad seeing this MMO close its doors for good. I don't know. But anyhow, if you were a Warhammer Online user and are wondering whether or not you're eligible for a refund on unused game time, subscriptions, or game item codes be sure to check out Mythic's FAQ on the matter -- it does a pretty good job explaining everything. Warhammer Online players, what did you get up to on the game's last day of operation? Warhammer Online Refund FAQ [Warhammer Online via Massively]
The Steam Holiday Sale has officially begun! Posted: 19 Dec 2013 04:23 AM PST It's the most wonderful time of the year! That time when you lock yourself away for days at a time -- partially to immerse yourself in all the new videogames you bought on the cheap, partially to avoid the shame from neglecting to buy your loved ones any gifts because you spent all your money on the Steam Holiday Sale. As if the promise of discounted videogames weren't incentive enough, Steam's introduced snow globe trading cards to sweeten the pot. So, go forth and spend money to play games to earn cards to craft badges. You'd be a Scrooge not to. Winter Steam Sale -- All Deals, Daily and Flash Deals [Steam]
Xbox One gets Max: The Curse of Brotherhood tomorrow Posted: 19 Dec 2013 04:15 AM PST The more I think back to what I've played of Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, the more I want to try the platformer again. To best it. The game was unexpectedly challenging in a good way. It's getting something of a surprise release for Xbox One on Friday, December 20. There's no word from publisher Microsoft Studios on the Xbox 360 version, which presumably means we can expect that to drop next year. If you do happen to own the new console, however, consider this -- and not just because you're desperate for more games to play on the system. Max should be a genuinely good game. Should. For as long as it's been in development, I'm hopeful.
Joe Danger Infinity is a brand new iOS game Posted: 19 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST Hello Games is probably riding on a cloud right now. After announcing No Man's Sky the internet pretty much exploded, and everyone can't wait to see what it can offer. But the studio isn't forgetting its humble roots, as Joe Danger will ride again on iOS in an all new adventure. Hello Games has announced Joe Danger Infinity -- an endless game that takes place in a toy kingdom. Everyone in Infinity is a toy (including Joe), and the world will feature tons of tiny objects and cute little courses. It'll also feature "two dozen" new characters and "twenty new vehicles," including cars and airplanes. The studio seems to be tapping into the power of Jetpack Joyride, and I'm okay with that.
Diablo III: Reaper of Souls hits PC and Mac in March Posted: 19 Dec 2013 03:45 AM PST The Reaper of Souls expansion for Diablo III will be out for PC and Mac on March 25, 2014, Blizzard has announced. And we're done here. Well, not quite -- the game is available for pre-purchase as of today, and there are fresh details regarding the Digital Deluxe Edition. The base expansion is $39.99, but that price jumps to $59.99 for the Deluxe. The latter includes a Spectral Hound minion, transmogrified helms and weapons, three extra character slots, a Treasure Goblin pet in World of Warcraft, and special Battle.net portraits for StarCraft II. Chris will have a preview of Reaper of Souls before too long. After liking Diablo III a fair amount at first and then unceremoniously cutting the game from my life, I'm completely on the fence about this expansion. The reworked loot system does sound intriguing, that said. Reaper of Souls Unleashed on March 25, 2014 – Prepurchase Now [Battle.net]
| Assassin's Creed IV just got a PhysX patch on the PC Posted: 19 Dec 2013 03:15 AM PST If you were thinking that Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag needed more smoke, then you are in luck. An update just came out on the PC that adds PhysX support, so the particle effects can be more complex. In Black Flag this means that there is more smoke, and it should behave more realistically. I am personally a fan of PhysX, and wish more games would use it or another good physics engine. Arkham Asylum had great cloth physics for Batman's cape, and Mafia II had amazing explosions because of PhysX. I know that a lot of people don't care for the technology, because you need to have a really good PC to see the benefits, and a lot of games don't use it. Hopefully that changes in the future, because nice particle effects can really change how a game looks. | Nominees for Dtoid's best of 2013 competitive multiplayer Posted: 19 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST Like with our action and adventure categories, we went with breaking down multiplayer into two distinct categories this year. Competitive and cooperative multiplayer both offer such a vast difference from each other that lumping them into one overall multiplayer category wasn't going to serve these games fairly. Some of these games offer a fun competitive experience on top of a single-player package, while others were just designed with letting players unleash their angry upon others. Here are our nominees for best competitive multiplayer of 2013. |
Posted: 19 Dec 2013 02:45 AM PST If you're a veteran of the NES era, you've played its countless classics many times before. You may have bought them multiple times, either out of nostalgia or for convenience when a new system arrives. Modern gamers may scoff at the notion, but classic-chasers persevere, because it makes them happy. Leave it to Nintendo to invent a new way to play all these old games yet again in the form of the Wii U game NES Remix. The good news is, it's actually pretty fun -- if you can still stomach playing them.

Imagine me flying high above your home in a sleigh filled with crazy good deals on downloadable games, guided by fuzzy little flying corgis with reindeer antlers. It's snowing. The ground is glimmering. I might cry. You might cry too if you're out of money from Christmas shopping after seeing these deals! Definitely move fast if you're interested in any of what we have listed here. Happy shopping! [Images via Tumalo Bed & Biscuit] |
Nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 racing game Posted: 19 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST Racing? Now we're talking. That's my genre. Racing was in the slow lane this year right up until the very end, and then it exploded off the start line with releases from both of the biggest sim racing franchises as well as one of the best Need for Speed games yet. A couple of these also landed on the new crop of gaming systems. It's a pretty good time to be a racing fan. Here are our nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 racing game.
Here's a non-fantasy RPG being made with CryENGINE Posted: 19 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST The developer Warhorse just announced a new role-playing game, one that won't have monsters and wizards running around. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a medieval role-playing game being created with the CryENGINE for PC and next-gen consoles, and it's due out in 2014. The team behind it is made up of some talented developers, who have worked on games like Mafia II, Crysis 3, Arma, Operation Flashpoint, Forza Horizons, Original War, and the UFO trilogy. According to the developer "Kingdom Come: Deliverance is first-person, open-world realistic RPG set in medieval Europe. Enjoy unique melee combat, castle sieges, battles and quests in this epic RPG." It sounds like a very pretty Mount & Blade to me, and that's fine by me. I will glady play this.
Posted: 19 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST A free-to-play ARPG (Diablo-like) sounds like a terrible idea on paper, mostly due to the track record of microtransactions recently and the obvious exploitation potential of a loot-heavy genre. Enter Grinding Gear Games who, despite this set up, have beautifully married to two pieces together to create a wonderful whole in Path of Exile. The result is a truly free-to-play unique romp through a carefully crafted an interesting universe. But beware! True enjoyment will demand patience and dedication from all who enter.
EVE devs dress up as Yule Lads to hand out presents Posted: 19 Dec 2013 12:30 AM PST I love CCP. They are a bunch of crazy guys, and every time they come out with a video it's always bizarre and amazing. To celebrate the holiday's in EVE Online, the guys at CCP are giving out in-game gifts on an advent calander. Of course, they had to create a video of the tale of the Yule Lads, dirty hobos with names like "Pot Licker" and "Door Slammer". They confront Santa Clause while flying around in space ships, which makes perfect sense I'm sure. EVE players can visit the redemption page to grab a new gift every day until Christmas. Nothing says "Happy Holidays" like some missiles or a 150mm Light Carbine Repeating Cannon. There are also snowballs you can fire at other pilots, which is a fun way to celebrate before you pod kill someone.
| Not feeling Yaiba? Team Ninja developing new Ninja Gaiden Posted: 19 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z isn't even out yet, but Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi let it slip, in a talk with Keiji Inafune, translated by Siliconera, that the company will come out with a new, more traditional and fan-friendly entry in the series. "Team Ninja is thinking of the next Ninja Gaiden," Hayashi explained. "For example, if the games were food, the Ninja Gaiden series would be a rich meaty entree and Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z would be dessert. Every course of the meal would be in the same Ninja Gaiden world, but gamers will experience different kinds of play. That’s how Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z will be different." Yaiba certainly looked appetizing when the first screenshots were loosed, like a more cleaned up Killer is Dead. Unfortunately, every single thing else about the game that's been shown off has been embarrassingly bad. Even if it plays well, I don't know if I could stomach that sleazy cheeseball performance. | Review: Colossatron: Massive World Threat Posted: 18 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST In the modern era of videogames that tends to take itself seriously a bit too often, I occasionally enjoy kicking back with ridiculous, over-the-top games. Games that remind me of the '90s -- where teenage turtles and Super Sentai squads reigned supreme, and metal theme songs were commonplace while you sipped your choice Ecto Cooler-flavored Hi-C beverage. So if I told you that Halfbrick's Colossatron featured a giant robot dragon from space, hell-bent on systematically destroying every major city in the world, while a plucky news team watched with bated breath, would you be interested? |

Nominees for Destructoid's 2013 Game of the Year Posted: 18 Dec 2013 10:00 PM PST The year of our Lord Two Thousand Thirteen was a ridiculous and amazing year for videogames. One of the best, I'd say. The idea of narrowing down this year to ten games seems crazy, doesn't it? But, after much deliberation, we've done just that. Chances are that one or two of your favorites for 2013 are not among our top ten nominees for 2013 Game of the Year. I know how you feel. The entire Destructoid staff knows how you feel. There were just that many good games.
