| Penny Arcade adds 'Diversity Lounge' to upcoming events Posted: 18 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST PAX is a place where "computer geeks" and "sci-fi nerds" don't have to feel marginalized. That's the theory anyway. As hard as the management at Penny Arcade may say they're working to make everyone feel included, comments from founding artist Mike Krahulik about rape, gender, and many other topics have put the organization in a near-constant state of backpedaling and apology. The common theme among Krahulik's detractors is that no matter how he tries to sound sincere and apologetic, he still doesn't get it. The more he tries to look like he gets it, the more we see that he doesn't. PA's plans to implement a "Diversity Hub and Lounge" fall in line with that theme. According to PA, these lounges "will exist as a resource for PAX attendees to find information related to issues surrounding women, LGBTQ, people of color, disabled people and mental health issues in gaming. The hub will also be a resource for industry professionals and fans to interface in a setting focused on diversity, receive diversity training, learn more about diversity and meet people from diverse communities." | Joe Danger 1 and 2 coming to the PlayStation Vita in 2014 Posted: 18 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST Joe Danger 1 and 2 is continuing its gaming platform tour with the next stop being on the PlayStation Vita. We knew this was happening back in August, but we have some additional info according to VG247. Hello Games is kind of busy with No Man's Sky at the moment, so the port is being handled by indie team Four Door Lemon. This team was responsible for the HD remake of Oddworld: Mucnh's Oddysee for the PlayStation 3. Expect both Joe Dangers in Q2 of 2014. The Vita is becoming pretty damn port heavy lately, but at least the ports have been turning out pretty great such as with Terraria and Mutant Mudds. |
The Gentlemen's Club! The last one... for the year!? Posted: 18 Dec 2013 01:55 PM PST Spencer and I are both two people who get really excited whenever our favorite non-denominational holiday rolls around. We have already been getting into the mood by listening to some of the greatest seasonal song hits from Bing Crosby to CeeLo Green (his holiday album is pretty great). So to celebrate one of our favorite times of the year we thought we would use a literal sack of games that came out this year and play random ones every 15 minutes. Have a game that came out this year that you were wondering if it were good or not? Chances are you will see it played tonight. We have a few great ones mixed in with a few horrible ones, and some import surprises as well! So come on by and watch as we check out 2013's video games 15 minutes at a time! What game left the biggest impact on you guys this year? Good or bad, I am not too picky.
GeForce ShadowPlay now supports Twitch streaming Posted: 18 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST Released this week, GeForce Experience 1.8.1. has added support for streaming to Twitch. Everyone's doing it! The integrated recording feature, ShadowPlay, can be used to live stream your games with a promised minimal hit to performance for GTX 600 and 700 Series cards. Best of all, the frame rate is not capped. In its announcement post, Nvidia showed footage of Warframe set to High, and it looks quite good as expected. There's work to be done, sure, but talk about a nice feature for folks who have a supported video card. GeForce Experience 1.8.1: Introducing ShadowPlay Twitch Streaming [GeForce]
Fan recreates Earthbound with HD visuals Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:15 PM PST To say that Earthbound, or Mother as it's referred to in Japan, is a much loved and admired game, is an understatement. From fans creating charity drives, to organized campaigns to get the game on Nintendo's virtual console -- this quirky and inventive RPG title has stolen the hearts of fans, whose numbers seem to grow with every passing year. Now, one such fan has shown off his love for the series by giving the game a new look for the HD generation. 3D artist Christopher Behr has spent the better part of a year giving Earthbound fans an idea of what a modern day version of the game could look like. Using his skills, he made a recreation of Onett, the hometown for Earthbound/Mother's main character. This recreation does take some liberties stylistically, but it's close enough to give people an idea of what the retro-quirky style can do with new tech. I don't know about you, but this is making me yearn for another playthrough of Earthbound. These images make me wish for Nintendo to give the series another chance. If anything, the passion from fans over the years show that it's deserving of another shot. For links to full sized versions of his work, check out the artist's website. Onett [Christopher Behr]
The Stomping Land: It's like DayZ, but with dinosaurs Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST The Stomping Land is a survival game coming to the PC that was successfully funded through Kickstarter not to long ago. Players have to hunt for dino meat, all while fending of large dinosaurs like the T-Rex. Plus, you'll have to deal other players looking to survive. There's only so many dinos you can hunt, and when the meat supplies start to run dry, rival players will attempt to raid your camp. The developers behind the game have given us a little update, detailing some new features that they've added since May. There's going to be 14 different kinds of dinosaurs, and you can even ride some of them like your very own Yoshi! There will be beaches, mountains, forests, caves and more to explore, and there's some interesting mechanics being put in, such as how dinos can drag players around after being lassoed. Definitely looking forward to Stomping Land as there's nowhere near enough dinosaur games on the market anymore. Someone bring back Turok!
Final Fantasy XIV latest patch brings in 24-man raids Posted: 18 Dec 2013 11:30 AM PST Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn patch 2.1 has hit bringing with it a ton of new stuff. Notably the first installment of the Crystal Tower 24-man raid. Additionally there's a new housing system for free companies, rebalanced job actions, over a 100 new quests for those at level 50, and more. Plus, there's new dungeons, changes made to FATEs, and well it's actually kind of nuts scrolling through all the additions and changes on the patch update page from Square. Hell, the preview video is even ten-minutes long! Needless to say, there's a ton of stuff to bring you back for more.
| Game Debate to the Death! Favorite Legend of Zelda game? Posted: 18 Dec 2013 11:15 AM PST In our previous poll we asked everyone to pick their favorite Pokémon game in the entire series. Out of over 1,200 total votes, here are the top three results:
Now that you've had plenty of time to play the new Wind Waker HD and A Link Between Worlds, it's time to bring back one of our most heated debate topics from four years ago: what's your favorite Zelda game, and why? Vote in the poll below and tell us why you made your pick in the comments! |
Dead Rising 3 'Operation Broken Eagle' DLC delayed Posted: 18 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST Originally slated for a December 24 release, Dead Rising 3's first bit of DLC is now scheduled for early next year. Operation Broken Eagle, which stars a Spec-Ops agent in search of the President, is now releasing January 21, 2014. I'm dying to see what Capcom's take on the POTUS looks like. "Adding new content to the massive open world of Los Perdidos is a major undertaking, and to ensure we provide the best possible experience for players, we are putting a few additional weeks of polish and testing into the episode before it's released," said a representative. "Stay tuned for additional updates." Oh, we will. I must say, Dead Rising 3 is the one Xbox One exclusive that has me feeling left out.
Strike Vector entering open beta January 2014 Posted: 18 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST The nine-man team behind Strike Vector have announced that their awesome looking dog fighting game will be entering open beta in January 2014. The developers designed the game in "the pure tradition of the sacred monsters of hardcore FPS such as Quake 3." In that same regard using the model of games development from the past, developer Ragequit has announced that all future downloadable content will be free. "No premium versions, no micro-payments, no costly DLCs! All of that will be free for players." Check out the latest trailer, plus some high quality shots in our gallery for more.
| Everything that happened in today's Nintendo Direct Posted: 18 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST A mix of old and new, this week's Nintendo Direct was a pleasant surprise. Remixed NES games packaged into an eShop title that's out right now with no buildup? That's our Nintendo. Zelda x Dynasty Warriors? Well, hello there. If you missed the broadcast earlier today, find the full video embedded above, or skim our breakout posts:
The real highlight, of course, was Reggie's tiny Christmas tree. |
Posted: 18 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] Welcome back to the wonderful world of WTF Wednesday on Mash Tactics. Tonight's feature is the awesomely quirky and wild Sega CD title, Time Gal. Call me crazy, but this game was one of my absolute favorites back in the day, and I can't wait to dive back in. Honestly though, I haven't played this in forever, so expect deaths -- lots and lots of crazy cinematic deaths -- as I attempt to travel time, and, erm, do whatever it is exactly that Time Gal is trying to do. If I somehow manage to finish the game, or, more realistically get frustrated by my failures, and am dying to move onto something else, I have a couple backups ready to go that perfectly fit the theme for the evening: Cobra Command and Road Avenger. If you missed out on these games back in the day, or just never got to check them out, be sure to get over to Dtoid.TV tonight for a few hours of old-school, animated craziness! QotD: Did you enjoy any FMV games from back in the day?
Posted: 18 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST Gomo had a bad dream in which his precious pooch Dingo was kidnapped by an evil force. When he wakes up, he finds that his dog has actually been stolen by an advanced alien race who want Gomo to steal a rare crystal from a nearby mine and trade it for his dog's life. Gomo is a fairly simple, point-'n'-click adventure game that's loaded with quirky charm but the difficulty level is pitched between very easy and mildly challenging.
Budget-priced Metal Gear Rising hitting PC soon Posted: 18 Dec 2013 08:45 AM PST Without a doubt one of the premier action titles this year, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be coming to PC with DLC included on January 9, 2014. The game's already listed on Amazon for pre-order and is expected to appear on Steam proper tomorrow morning. Here's where things get fun. For 48 hours, Revengeance will be reduced to $19.99. As such, you'll want to keep an eye out for the game to surface tomorrow. Really, this is worth getting and at such a smart price point, it's easy to rationalize buying the title a second time. [Thanks, Jordan]
Marvel characters are coming to Minecraft: Xbox 360 Ed. Posted: 18 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST I don't know that I fully grasp the appeal of premium skins in Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, but I was never one to buy crap for my Avatar, either, so I'm clearly not the intended audience. If I were, however, these characters from the upcoming Avengers Skin Pack might just do the trick. I mean, look at that -- they made the Red Skull adorable. Some of the confirmed characters include Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Nick Fury, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Loki, Wasp, Falcon, Vision, Maria Hill, and Agent Coulson (of course). No date has been given yet other than "coming soon." Seems like something they'd want to get out by the end of the year, however.
Grab Hotline Miami at 75% off on GOG.com Posted: 18 Dec 2013 08:15 AM PST While it's certainly been the subject of many a sale opportunity by this point, I would feel remiss in failing to take advantage of any opportunity to encourage people to play Hotline Miami. So, in that spirit, I come to inform you that the game is on sale right now at GOG.com, where you can purchase it for $2.50, 75% off of its normal asking price. I'm not going to bore you with yet another lengthy diatribe about how everyone must experience it. We've done that enough by this point. Just know that this is a steal, and that there's no time like the present. Hotline Miami [GOG.com]
This Mario Kart 8 trailer marks Rosalina's debut Posted: 18 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST With everything going on in this Mario Kart 8 trailer, I'm once again left confused as to why no one came up with a more memorable title for the game. Regardless, it's looking great as ever, and should be yet another convincing reason to own a Wii U when it releases this spring. But, as much as I'm happy to see Super Mario Galaxy's Rosalina end up here following her reveal for Super Smash Bros., those darned babies are back. It all started for me in the Yoshi's Island days with baby Mario, and the relationship with these characters has only deteriorated from there. If you've played any of the Nintendo-themed sports games, you know my pain. And now they'll have access to blue shells? My pride can't take losing to an infant in Mario Kart.
Golf arrives for Wii Sports Club on Wii U Posted: 18 Dec 2013 07:45 AM PST Nintendo has released the Golf mode for Wii Sports Club to the Nintendo eShop, letting players hit the motion-controlled links. As with prior Wii Sports Club games, you can purchase Golf outright for $9.99 or purchase a day pass granting access for twenty-four hours (which also allows for playing prior Sports Club releases, Bowling and Tennis in that time). I love the a la carte pricing model for this. Golf and Bowling were the only two games I really enjoyed from all of the Wii Sports line, but I wouldn't have ever bought an entire game simply to play those modes. I am much more likely to consider picking up one or two of the games piecemeal. What I will not be doing is setting my GamePad on the floor to hit golf balls. What an impractical, pointless exercise that is.
Shadow Warrior and Rise of the Triad's crossover lovin' Posted: 18 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST Shadow Warrior and Rise of the Triad have been busy making sweet love to each other to create some new features. On the Shadow Warrior front, a free survival mode has been added that features three custom-built battle arenas. As for the crossover, you'll now be able to use Rise of the Triad's Excalibat as an alternative katana in Shadow Warrior. Then over in Rise of the Triad, you can play as Shadow's Lo Wang in multiplayer. Nice. Also, here's a special message from Devolver Digital's CFO Fork Parker. "Enjoy the free content, nerds. “Don’t forget my holiday cheer and festive giving of free stuff next year when I jack up prices on some face-melting indie games."
Here are a ton of NES Remix gameplay videos Posted: 18 Dec 2013 07:15 AM PST Out of nowhere, NES Remix dropped today on the Wii U for $14.99. It's basically a WarioWare-like collection of minigames from various NES-era titles, with some challenge-centric goals and a few remixed levels (like Luigi in the original Donkey Kong). $15 is pretty steep, so I collected a heap of gameplay from my playtime today, so you can get a better look at what it has to offer. As a side note, you cannot access the full games in NES Remix -- it even has a comedic NES Zelda "buy somethin' will ya!" eShop ad at the bottom of the game's menu.
Nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 adventure game Posted: 18 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST Adventure games are undergoing a renaissance, propelled by the success of last year's The Walking Dead, proving that there's a lot of life left in the old school. 2013 continued this resurgence, introducing new approaches and refining what already has worked to produce games which are among the best the genre has yet produced. From the pure point-and-click Telltale has been providing, to the ultra-focused detail checking of Papers, Please or the meta-narrative on game design found in The Stanley Parable HD, it's been a very interesting and diverse year. Here now are Destructoid's nominees for best adventure game of 2013.
Nintendo may have gone too far with this one Posted: 18 Dec 2013 06:45 AM PST In this, our Year of Luigi, 2013, a terrible thing has happened. Somehow, this one minigame in NES Remix seems to have slipped by Iwata. Is it a conspiracy from Reggie to axe the extended 2014 Year of Luigi celebration? Who knows. But be warned, this video is not for the faint Luigi fan at heart. Will Luigi even make it into the extended 2014? If Reggie had his way, it doesn't look like it.
Terraria feels so right on the Vita Posted: 18 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST You might not think it, but Terraria is definitely one of the more hotly anticipated games to come to the PS Vita. I myself have been looking forward to playing it on the go for the better part of this year after putting plenty of time into the PC version for the past couple years. And now it's finally here. Terraria on Vita is just about the same exact game that has already come to the consoles, so you can check out our full-fledged review for that to get the big picture. Instead, I'm going to talk about how it plays, looks, and feels on the Vita in comparison.
Nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 strategy game Posted: 18 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST Sometimes, the best strategy is to not play at all. This is not one of those times. Unless you value your spare time, because this year's wondrous array of strategy games will inevitably gobble it up in oodles like a bull in a Chinese restaurant. Fire Emblem: Awakening is still kicking my ass and making me regret playing on Hard/Classic with its Evel Knievel AI, Civilization V got a meaty upgrade, Dota 2 has consumed entire lives, and Enemy Within made me want to play XCOM again a month after beating XCOM.
Mutant Mudds is all kinds of wonderful on PS Vita Posted: 18 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST Mutant Mudds: Deluxe is great. It's really great. And now it's great on Sony platforms. Great! Renegade Kid's 12-bit platformer made the jump to PlayStation 3 and Vita this week, offering Cross-Buy and Cross-Save functionality alongside myriad of trophies to collect for $9.99.Like the Wii U and Steam versions of Deluxe, the PlayStation release features an additional 20 ghost-themed stages, several unlockable characters, and welcome (but entirely optional) mid-level checkpoints. I've had some time to test Mutant Mudds: Deluxe out on both PS3 and Vita. And the game looks and plays a lovely as ever -- especially on Vita. Man, is this game gorgeous on that little OLED screen. Unfortunately, it's not all good news. I've had some troubles getting the Cross-Save feature to work and I'm not alone in that. While I'm more than happy to just keep plugging away on the portable for the time being, Renegade Kid boss Jools Watsham says the Cross-Save issue is being sorted out. Watsham has also indicated "there’s definitely a chance of the game coming to PS4 in the future." So make sure to pester the folks at Renegade Kid if you want to see Max and the muddy invaders go next-gen.
Nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 fighting game Posted: 18 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST 2013 was a great year for fighting games. EVO 2013 was one of the best ever, and interacting with the community was one of my favorite highlights of my gaming career. While there weren't a whole lot of brand new games, the few and the proud made an impact on the industry at large, and a ton of pre-existing fighting games are still going strong. Here are the nominees for best fighting game of 2013
DayZ made $5.1 million in 24 hours Posted: 18 Dec 2013 04:45 AM PST The standalone version of DayZ was released on Steam Early Access yesterday and it's already made $5.1 million in sales. That's insane! 172,500 copies were sold in the first 24 hours, and that number is just going to continue to increase. In fact, it's the number one top seller on Steam right now. Creator Dean Hall has been steadily Tweeting updates about DayZ, and does note there are a ton of bugs to be worked out. Follow Dean to get updates on the game as they work out the kinks.
Hardline live: Nintendo roundup, YouTube woes, and GotY Posted: 18 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST Bless you, Nintendo. I wasn't sure what all I was going to discuss with Steven, Dale, and Hamza on Hardline until you dropped a bunch of news in this morning's Nintendo Direct, including a couple of new games and some strange collaborations. The other big-ticket item is the messy YouTube Content ID situation, which many people seem to have a strong opinion about one way or the other, us included. And since the last episode of Hardline, approximately eighty year-end nominations posts have gone up on Destructoid. We'll have something to say about those, probably. Please do drop by as we stream Hardline on Twitch.tv at 11:00am Pacific today. We'll talk about what you want us to talk about, but we're no mind readers. Jump in chat!
Day two of the Xbox sale is all two-dimensional Posted: 18 Dec 2013 04:15 AM PST The second day of Microsoft's annual end-of-year games sale puts 2D explorative indies in the spotlight. Terraria, Fez, and Spelunky are all on discount for approximately $5, $2.50, and $3.75 respectively. These are only the daily deals, as there's still the list of offers that run until December 23. Spelunky is a favorite around here, so it comes highly recommended by most. You could even see if you can equal Jordan in clearing Hell. Actually, let me save you some time -- you probably can't. Or, if you're feeling really ambitious, you could play Fez to prep for Fez 2. Countdown to 2014 Daily Deal Day 2: 2D Modern Classics [Major Nelson]
Nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 action game Posted: 18 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST This year we've split up our action and adventure categories are there's just so much that can fill each now respectively. Gaming offers so many ways to escape the realities of life, and action-style games are the best way for people to let off some steam without inflicting actual pain in real life. Here are our nominees for best action game of 2013.
Impressions: Sonic Lost World Yoshi's Island Zone Posted: 18 Dec 2013 03:45 AM PST Nintendo surprised us all with a special announcement for Sonic Lost World -- the Wii U edition of the game will be getting two new Nintendo-centric DLC stages. While the pricing model hasn't been revealed on the second add-on (which is strongly hinted as a Zelda stage), the first pack, the Yoshi's Island Zone, is completely free.
Cranky Kong goes bananas in new Donkey Kong trailer Posted: 18 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST We got lots of new info from today's Nintendo Direct, and amongst all the news was the latest trailer for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It shows off just what you'd expect with all the crazy platforming featuring the Donkey Kong family. Cranky Kong is one energetic monkey for being so old. I still remember him telling me about his good old days back on the Super Nintendo version of the game. Remembered when his dead wife would visit you as a ghost in Donkey Kong 64? Creepy. Also there's a badass looking polar bear boss featured in the new trailer. Neat.
Nominees for Destructoid's best of 2013 role-playing game Posted: 18 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST No Persona 4: Golden this year? Well, it wasn't all bad. The year certainly wasn't slouching when it came to doling out 50+ hour time sinks. It started out strong with Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch all the way back in January and spiraled out of control since. We have a healthy mix of console and handheld fare, eastern and western formulas. The vaunted Waifu Simulator. A collaboration with Studio Ghibli. There's even a fully free-to-play game that's arguably better than Diablo III. More like Diablo Free!
Film Pixel Poetry makes a case for games being art Posted: 18 Dec 2013 02:30 AM PST Game designer and filmmaker Richard Cook is working on a project called "Pixel Poetry: The Case for Videogames as Art." Slated for a summer 2014 release, this film tackles the popular gamer's debate once again, supported by interviews from many gaming personalities, from Kellee Santiago to Adam Sessler to our own Jonathan Holmes. Cook is currently funding the film via an IndieGoGo campaign. If you would like to see how he keeps this discussion going, consider supporting the film.
My jam for today: Japanese Zelda commercial song Posted: 18 Dec 2013 02:09 AM PST Oh snap. Turn it up -- this is my jam! This new The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Japanese commercial features a little rap by Japanese Hip Hop group Scha Dara Parr. While I don't expect you all to know and appreciate vintage Japanese Hip Hop groups (they also supplied the music for that classic SNES Zelda dance commercial), I do expect you to listen and rock out to this commercial multiple times this morning. Enjoy.
Tomb Raider on iOS is great, but you'll want a controller Posted: 18 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST In case you haven't heard, the original Tomb Raider is available on iOS for a buck. I was trying it out yesterday, and I have to say, so long as you're using a controller option, the game works like a charm. The only hangup you may have are the so called "tank controls," where Lara can only walk forward in the direction she is facing, but those are pretty easy to adjust to if you've played anything from that era. The big elephant in the room is touch controls. If you don't own a pricey and widely unsupported $100 iOS controller, you're basically screwed. The tank controls are a nightmare while having to deal with multiple virtual buttons, and I almost get nauseous just looking at the above header. Not only does Tomb Raider require precision in just about every jump halfway into the game, but the fun diving function is also borked on virtual controls -- kids, just don't do it. Thankfully, the original Tomb Raider still stands up, as the level designs and setpieces in general are solid. It helps that it includes Lara's Mansion to play around in, which should help reacquaint you with the basics. It also comes with Tomb Raider Gold - The Shadow Of The Cat ("Unfinished Business" outside of America), which are a collection of extra challenging levels many people have never played. It's conspicuously named "Tomb Raider I" on iTunes, so I really hope there's a II in the works with controller support. Not only is it my favorite game in the series, but the expanded Lara's Mansion would make for some great quick-play material. Plus, who doesn't love locking the Butler in the freezer?
Bravely Default is getting a North American demo soon Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:48 AM PST According to NOA President Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo will be releasing a North American demo on January 2nd for Bravely Default. Europe already got in on this action weeks ago, but this one will focus on a particular side-story. Certain items and Street Passes can be carried over to your full retail copy. Expect the full game to drop in February 2014 -- oh, and there's already a sequel in the works, in case you hadn't heard.
Super Mario Galaxy's Rosalina joins Smash Bros. roster Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:34 AM PST Super Mario Galaxy's Rosalina is joining the roster of playable characters in Super Smash Bros. The celestial princess will fight alongside star-like creature Luma in the upcoming 3DS and Wii U fighter.
The Year of Luigi has officially been extended Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:33 AM PST [Update: it's available for 1,500 Coins with a March 2014 shipment date. Great googly moogly!] After hearing some hubbub about "extending the Year of Luigi in 2014" from Nintendo of America, Iwata has made it officially official worldwide this morning on the latest Nintendo Direct -- the celebrations will continue into the upcoming year! Whether or not this involves more Luigi games outside of Dr. Luigi is unclear, but Iwata says to check Club Nintendo "sometime in 2014" for more information on the special Luigi statue, pictured above.
NES Remix announced for the Wii U, available today Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:32 AM PST Iwata had yet another announcement to make on this morning's Nintendo Direct, this time somewhat more surprising than Hyrule Warriors. NES Remix was announced for the Wii U, compiling many different games from the NES days including The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong 3, and many more. What makes this game a remix is that the most memorable scenes are taken from each game, and presented differently, with an example from Super Mario Bros. showing a level backwards. This presents interesting new situations and challenge to the player. Miiverse integration was also shown, with 8-bit stamps and score comparing shown off. NES Remix will go live on the eShop today for $15.

Dr. Luigi is a new Dr. Mario for the Wii U Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:25 AM PST "Doctor Luigi is in the house." That opening line from Iwata during this morning's Nintendo Direct may have shook the Earth, and I'm still recovering. That's right, Dr. Luigi is still coming to the Wii U on December 31st, just in time for the Year of Luigi 2013. Miis will appear in the middle in some modes, and Iwata notes that the game will be generally easier than Dr. Mario, which is good news for newcomers.

The game is getting a "Yoshi's Island Zone," which includes pipes, coins, and other bits and pieces of Mario. According to Iwata, it's available right now for free! Iwata hints at the next piece of DLC -- you can link your Wii U to the eShop early next year. Link? Get it? Zelda, folks. |
Nintendo will distribute free Celebis with the Bank App Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:17 AM PST The Pokemon X & Y Bank App is coming later this month, and it'll allow you to store your creatures into cloud storage, as well as transfer all your captures from Black or White. We knew all this already, but Iwata has just announced a new promotion during this morning's Nintendo Direct. If you register your app before September 30th, 2014, you'll get a free Celebi. Neat! You have plenty of time to do this, so you may as well grab the free trial.
Two new modes announced for Kirby: Triple Deluxe Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:16 AM PST Iwata brought Kirby: Triple Deluxe with him to today's Nintendo Direct, showing off some new gameplay including 2.5D gameplay, and a hyper nova inhale ability. Most interesting, however, was the announcement of two new modes to make an appearance. First is "Kirby Fighters," a four-player fighting mini-game similar in way to Smash Bros. that can played with four local friends or by yourself. "Dedede's Drum Dash" was also announced, which has you playing as none other than King Dedede himself in a rhythm game. No further release date was announced other than a vague 2014 window.
Original Yoshi's Island creator assisting with 'New' game Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:10 AM PST Satoru Iwata has announced that Takashi Tezuka, the Director of the original Yoshi's Island for the SNES, will be working on Yoshi's New Island -- the upcoming 3DS game. Iwata stated that he has been overseeing the general development of the title, which bodes well for fans of the SNES classic (myself included). Yoshi's New Island will launch in Spring 2014. That's soon!
Hyrule Warriors is Dynasty Warriors with Link in it Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:05 AM PST Nintendo has lost its mind. (In a good way. I think.) During this morning's Nintendo Direct presentation, company president Satoru Iwata revealed a collaboration with Tecmo Koei tentatively called Hyrule Warriors. The working title looks to combine Dynasty Warriors' hack and slash formula with The Legend of Zelda's universe. Weird! It's coming to Wii U sometime in 2014.
Posted: 17 Dec 2013 11:15 PM PST Ever since it was first revealed, I've been attracted to the basic conceit of Teslagrad. Perhaps due to the volume of available titles in the genre, indie puzzle platformers have become a bit polarizing, but that never repelled me. Indeed, when compared to great titles in the genre, Teslagrad is a(n) (invisible) force to be reckoned with.
Rogue Legacy now updated, more patch details Posted: 17 Dec 2013 05:00 PM PST Cellar Door games recently announced an update to Rogue Legacy, the procedurally generated platform game in which players explore an ever-changing castle, one familial generation at a time. It's a really great game, easy to lose hours to, and the new content sounds like it's going to add quite a bit to the experience. In total, 28 new rooms have been added, which should be a nice bit of additional variety and spice things up for returning players, while also removing the "Diary" rooms which fill in the plot once said plot is fully revealed so that they're no longer a waste of time to travel through. The update also seems to make a lot of things easier, improving the "Haggle" ability to reduce prices more efficiently, reducing the attack capability of some enemies and making some abilities function better in "New Game +" playthroughs. And, finally, it reduced the chances that a character with irritable bowel syndrome will fart whenever they jump, which I'm sure will be a black mark for many. The patch notes also state that Cellar Door is currently testing Steam Cloud functionality and expects it to be included in a future update . This is the only game in my Steam library for which I had earned all of the achievements, which should say something for how much I enjoyed playing it. I say, "had," because there are now six more achievements in the Steam version I'll have to earn. Oh, darn. Patch Notes 1.2.0 – Content Patch [Cellar Door Games]
