Mew-Genics: This cat has a mustache

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

"[B]ecause this cat identifies as a hipster," so says Edmund McMillen.

Team Meat's (Super Meat Boy) upcoming cat lady sim, Mew-Genics, has been spiraling towards more and more additions, according to the development blog, faster than a cat collection loses control and consumes your life. That's feline by me.

Kittens are born with types, "from lazy to sexy, from passive to psychotic." Further, cats will "identify" with certain objects (among the hundreds of possibilities) and these objects, like a mustache or a board with nails sticking out of it, will change the cat's stats.

Rare, powerful identification with an object can cause a mutation, like the cat that identified with the Super Meat Boy plush and took on the character's facial features. Mutations, unlike object identification, can be passed down to kittens. The post also hints the next update will talk about birth defects and genetic diseases.

Mew-Genics is purrfectly ridiculous and I need it. I need all the cats.

How the Viscera Cleanup Detail saved Christmas

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST

Certainly one of the strangest releases of 2013, Viscera Cleanup Detail now has a holiday-themed version available for purchase on Steam, Santa's Rampage. Set in the workshop at the North Pole, players must clean the carnage from a Kris Kringle killing spree. It's on sale now for $1.99 (regularly $2.49)

I think I've commented before on what a clever game Viscera Cleanup Detail is. It's more clever than it is fun, frankly, but how much fun can you really expect to have in picking up bits of unidentifiable corpses and disposing of them? But if you like the idea of a game in which you're the guy who shows up after the action is all over (as I do), you should probably try it.

Batman: Arkham Origins gets free 'Hunter, Hunted' mode

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST

I'm not currently playing Batman: Arkham Origins' multiplayer. Are you? Are your friends?

WB Games has release a new mode for the game, and I hope someone's out there enjoying it. "Hunter, Hunted" is a free addition on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in which three Joker thugs, three Bane thugs, and Batman try to outlast each other with no respawns.

As appealing as it is to play as the Caped Crusader, man, talk about pressure. Glad to see this mode arrive in a free update so as to avoid splitting up the player base.

Huge News of the Week: Freaky Console-tina Wars

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 11:15 AM PST

Hello Huge members! We've got a very special episode of your super-secret news show this week, featuring a guest appearance by Dtoid legend and Escapist Reviews Editor Jim "Jimquisition" Sterling. For years, Jim Sterling and Destructoid were synonymous for a lot of people. I'd tell people at PAX or E3 that I worked at Dtoid, and they'd respond with excitement (or disdain) "Oh right! Jim Sterling's website." We're still "working" together on The Dismal Jesters, but I still feel his absence on Dtoid everyday, like phantom limb pain in the shape of a sometimes controversial, hilarious and insightful third leg.

Jim's over at the Escapist full time now, but I'm going to try to lure him back onto DH Not W whenever I have the chance. This week also includes numbers on the newly current gen consoles wars, news on Cliffy B's next game, Pikmin 3 and Dead Rising 3 DLC, a singing reviews round-up, a mesh tank top, and so much more. Thanks so much for tuning in, and remember to send your questions and comments to HolmesSupHolmes@gmail.com.

The Tea Party doesn't understand BioShock Infinite

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

Satire: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

It's not every day when an ultra-conservative group takes influences from videogames to push their beliefs. BioShock Infinite features many references and ideas from ultra-conservative movements of the past, and present, and it looked as if this group, National Liberty Federation, found something they liked. Unfortunately for them, they missed the obvious satire and irony when attempting to spread propaganda.

For those not familiar with U.S. politics, the Tea Party is an organized group of conservative citizens who believe that the nation's doctrines and foundations are under attack by the progressive moment and democratic leadership in our government. During their round of image sharing, they posted a notable piece of art from BioShock Infinite, which features George Washington holding the Ten Commandments and Liberty Bell, while proclaiming "It is our holy duty to guard against the foreign hordes." Of course, anyone who's played the game will know that this piece appeared in a city ruled with an ultra-conservative outlook and a nightmarish gallery of isolationist propaganda and fear-mongering.

Obviously, this image plays well to the group's beliefs and many who didn't know of the game and supported the group agreed with it -- but it didn't take long for fans of BioShock to take notice. Many of which posted in the comments mocking the group for missing the irony and for using a videogame for propaganda. They've since removed the post, but still chose to respond directly to the backlash. "We were litterally flooded with new people not only laughing at us, which we expected, but also congratulating us on seeing things differently and having the guts to post it.. It's time they heard the other side of DC politics and if our plan works, we should be gaining many new readers now that they know we're here."

What do you make of this, fans? Have you ever seen a conservative group use gaming for propaganda?

Review: Logitech PowerShell iOS controller and battery

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

The time has finally come for iOS gaming to shine with those of you who hate touch controls. For years mobile gaming has alienated those who can't stand playing things without tactile feedback, so iOS 7 and various peripheral manufacturers have answered the call.

I already gave the MOGA Ace Power a pretty positive review, so how does the Logitech Powershell fare?

Steam Early Access: Waste some time with Wasteland 2

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 09:45 AM PST

Wasteland 2 finally hit beta for its Kickstarter backers. Those of you who adopted the John Dorian "wait and see" approach, however, are free to cackle embarrassingly at all the chumps who plunked down their coin mad early, because you can slip right on into the same Wasteland 2 beta through Steam Early Access

Now, the catch is that you'll still have to pay $60 for early access -- much higher than typical -- because that was what Kickstarter backers paid for the beta access tier. Can't screw over the folks that funded development. If you wait for the full game to release, it will be cheaper, though the $60 early access will also net you some extras, including a copy of the original Wasteland.

Still, if you're itching to play Wasteland 2 -- hopefully that's not the radiation getting to you alrady -- inXile says its, "basically feature-complete. We’re including 30% of the game levels so you can see how Wasteland 2 plays: AI, gear, inventory, creatures, line-of-sight, exploration, world-maps, fast travel, dialogue, and more."

Grab yourself some chilaquiles, loosen your waistband, and go give Wasteland 2 a twirl if you have the time and money.

Pretty lights! Pinball Arcade hits PS4 tomorrow

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 09:15 AM PST

Pinball Arcade, lauded for its painstaking, detailed recreation of classic pinball tables, has touched up its work for a PS4 release. Just look at that improved lighting. It's like my childhood of inappropriately being in a dingy Irish pub in the middle of the day playing pinball and drinking Sprite with maraschino cherries come to life.

According to the pinball wizards behind Pinball Arcade, the PS4 launch comes with over 20 tables available -- all of its original Season One content. The Tales of the Arabian Nights table, above, is free. In addition to a digital release, there's a physical edition, too.

Because of the work that went into the retouching, Arcade won't be cross-buy, but, "players who own all of the Season One tables can buy either of the Season One Packs for half price," while PS+ members can take 10% off the asking price.

Review: MOGA Ace Power iOS controller and battery

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

As you may have heard, MFi (Made for iPhone) controllers have started to roll out. In a nutshell, they work with a limited amount of games, but they allow you to use real, physical buttons for titles that may not work as well on the touchscreen. Think games like Bastion or Limbo, which would benefit greatly from controller support, and you have a general idea of what these devices are trying to accomplish.

Right now there are a few controllers in the works, but the major two players that are out currently are the Logitech Powershell, and the MOGA. I spent the past week testing out both extensively, and in the end, I have one clear-cut favorite.

eShop sale: Mega Man X, Dr. Wily's Revenge for $2 each

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST

Nintendo has been rolling out two-day eShop sales and the latest duo is Mega Man X (Wii U) and Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge (3DS). These games are down to two bucks each until December 18 at 8:59am Pacific.

Whether you're a diehard fan of the franchise or not, I think many of us have a go-to Mega Man game that we never grow tired of playing. For me, that's undoubtedly Mega Man X, which I've come to respect more and more as the years go by (see: Egoraptor's Sequelitis video).

Dr. Wily's Revenge, on the other hand, I vaguely remember being decent at the time. Looking at it now, the beefy box art cracks me up. Shame we don't have SNES games on the 3DS eShop.

New consoles have brought a surge in hacking attempts

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 08:15 AM PST

The gaming world isn't the only group of people that's excited by the recent launch of new consoles. It turns out that the hacker community's just as thrilled. Unsurprisingly, it seems that its intententions are far more nefarious.

According to Kaspersky Lab, a cyber security firm, there's been a drastic increase in hacking attempts to correspond with the releases of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Thus far, the firm knows of 4.6 million attempts, an average of 34,000 occurring daily. Spain, Poland, and Italy have received the most attacks to date.

Interestingly, the hackers aren't necessarily after credit card and banking information. Rather, their intentions are generally aimed at extracting usernames and passwords. "We've just seen two of the biggest console launches ever,” said a senior security researcher at Kaspersky Lab. “That means there will be more gamers for criminals to target, especially as the Sony and Microsoft machines increasingly use the Internet for a fuller experience."

Nominees for Destructoid's best portable game of 2013

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

I know what you're thinking: "Any game is a portable game if you try hard enough." Fair point. But, I don't know about you, but my 2013 was off the wall busy and I appreciated a good, proper handheld title that didn't require me to cart around a small generator and monitor.

In fact, some of my favorite games of the year came out on handheld systems this year. The 3DS had about as good a year as you can hope for, the Vita knocked it out of the park with at least one sublime title, and the mobile sector left us with some great experiences that weren't Angry Birds cash-ins or coin eaters.

Grab Tearaway for $20 on Amazon

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 07:45 AM PST

Looking for something awesome to play on your Vita on the cheap? Media Molecule's brilliant Tearaway is being offered through Amazon right now for a mere $20 (a savings of 40%).

Sure it's the digital version, which means no packaging, no physical game card to misplace and no having to wait for them to ship the game to you, but seeing as those are three things I have little patience for any longer, this is sounding like a pretty good deal.

Xbox original programming coming early 2014

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST

Nancy Tellem, head of Microsoft's original programming division, hopes they, "will be able to put something up in the first quarter, at minimum second quarter," Variety reports. Sounds like it won't kick off with the Steven Spielberg-produced Halo show, or else I feel like they'd be trumpeting it a bit more. Maybe that soccer reality show?

Certainly it needs something to kick it off right, to ingratiate itself with users already set in their Amazon/Netflix/Hulu ways. "[W]e’re trying to focus on whether it’s only on Xbox or best on Xbox," Tellem said.

After realizing Tellem is the former president of CBS Entertainment, the network responsible for some of the worst shows to ever grace television -- Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, all the cop shows, all the reality shows -- I can't help but be a bit extra cynical about Microsoft's original programming. Maybe focus changes with the new platform, with it not being delivered to a country-wide market. We'll see.

DayZ Standalone alpha released on Steam Early Access

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 07:15 AM PST

An honest-to-goodness alpha of DayZ's standalone release has hit Steam. It's here! As the developers at Bohemia Interactive have indicated before, this isn't meant for most players.

The Steam Early Access page has similar disclaimers, such as "[DayZ] is a work in progress and therefore contains a variety of bugs. We strongly advise you not to buy and play the game at this stage unless you clearly understand what Early Access means and are interested in participating in the ongoing development cycle." Like that's going to scare us off.

There's a section on the Steam page that talks about the development roadmap -- drivable vehicles, wildlife, player-made constructions, user mods, and more are indeed planned. Here's the kicker, though: "We estimate that reaching Beta version with all key features present will take more than one year from current stage." Well, we've waited this long. What's another year (or three)?

Nominees for Destructoid's best 2013 PC exclusive

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST

I'd say that this was an exceptionally great year for PC games, but I feel as if it would be more accurate to state that 2013 simply kept the exceptional trend going. As it gets easier and easier to release a game on the PC platform, we are consistently being surprised by developers who feel safe enough to take risks thanks to the nature of the platform.

You could combine the developers of all these games and still have fewer members than a single branch of a so called "AAA" game development studio. Yet year after year this category proves that the number of team members doesn't mean anything.

Battlefield 4 PC patch puts an end to 'kill trading'

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 06:45 AM PST

If you see "Battlefield 4" or "DICE," it's likely the word "patch" is about to follow. I don't see that changing anytime soon, unfortunately. The latest patch for the PC version of the game, out now, addresses an issue with timing that could result in two players killing each other simultaneously.

The full patch notes can be found at the bottom of this post, or at the link below. From what I've heard of other players' Battlefield 4 experiences, the other standout here seems to be a "fix for a crash that would cause the game to stall, resulting in a sound loop. This should eliminate most of the problems relating to this."

DICE says it's also now aware of players running SLI who are seeing graphical flickering and an issue where the revive bar would remain on-screen. Those fixes aren't in this patch, however.

Xbox reveals its Countdown to 2014 sales

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 06:05 AM PST

As Microsoft is one to do annually, tomorrow begins a new sale on Xbox games and add-ons to celebrate the end of another year. The event, which will last until December 23, features a series of downloads that are available for the duration of the sale, and a handful that are only discounted for one day at a time.

The first daily deal is Borderlands 2 themed, as the Games on Demand version will see 75% slashed off its price. Other add-ons such as the season pass and Bloody Harvest are discounted as well. Curiously, Terraria is also thrown in the mix.

As for the mainstay deals, there isn't a whole lot to talk about. Most savings are either not that significant, or on games that might qualify as ancient by now. Notably, a final (and large) discount is being offered on both Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 before they both disappear from the digital storefront forever.

Nominees for Destructoid's best 2013 console exclusive

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

2013 was a great year for videogames. We saw a heap of releases for just about every platform imaginable, and a few of those happened to be exclusive to one console.

This list is full of trailblazers -- games that made their mark on their appropriate platform, and in a few cases, were straight system sellers. One attempted blurred the line between films and games. These are some of the titles that really showed what each console could do, and then some.

New screenshots for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 05:45 AM PST

Last month, we saw the reveal of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, a new open-world action/RPG set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. While we didn't get a look of the game, we did learn what to expect of the new open-ended gameplay and the Nemesis system, which can all allow players to shape the course of the events in Mordor and turn normal enemies into potential rivals. Now, the folks at Warner Bros. Games have released a small set of screenshots to show off the new title.

Taking place during a fairly open gap within Tolkien's lore, the developers at Monolith have taken some liberties and risks with the material to tell their own unique story. Players will step into the role of Talion, a resurrected human Ranger who acquires the abilities of a wraith, and goes on a quest to stop of the forces of Sauron as they attempt to overtake the lands of Middle-earth.

While this new title will likely irk some hardcore Tolkien fans, it's certainly got a number of neat ideas going for it. Plus, I've always wanted an open-world action/RPG set within Middle-earth. And no, the MMO doesn't count. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of Shadow of Mordor.

PS Plus: Dyad for free and another week of holiday sales

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST

When tomorrow's store update goes out, PS Plus members will be able to download Dyad for free, and there's quite a few games on sale for the holidays. And some that are on sale just because.

Now, you fine people are probably somewhat familiar with Dyad already, but I'd wager many PS Plus subscribers are not. It's not necessarily the type of game one would impulse buy and as a result, I think it's a terrific addition to the Instant Game Collection. It's worth your time.

As for the PS Plus sale, the highlights are Guacamelee! ($3.75; Cross-Buy), God of War: Ascension ($10), Knytt Underground ($2.50; Cross-Buy) PixelJunk Shooter 2 and PixelJunk SideScroller ($2.50 each), Limbo PS3 and PS Vita ($3.75 each), and Beat Hazard Ultra ($2.50). Also, let's just take a brief moment to laugh at Angry Birds Star Wars' discounted price of $32.39.

AC:IV DLC trailer remembers the concept of freedom

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 05:15 AM PST

While the Assassin's Creed IV main story focused on a protagonist who was concerned about the pirate life and accumulating wealth, the single player DLC explores a more moving subject -- social justice. Of course, such a noble concept could only be achieved through stab stab stab stab stab.

"Freedom Cry" follows Adewale, Edward Kenway's right-hand man, 15 years after Black Flag takes place. Now an assassin, he sets out to liberate slaves from Haitan cities and plantations. The add-on will be available tomorrow for $10, or gratis for season pass owners.

Impressions: League of Legends: Yasuo

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST

Samurais -- am I right? In the world of gaming, the "ronin/wandering samurai" trope is one of the most overused character designs I can think of, especially in the early 2000s, with the host of samurai-centric games on the original PlayStation.

But even still, their emphasis on speed and blade-based mechanics can lead to some interesting gameplay, often times putting just as much emphasis on flash and style as actual combat prowess. In that sense, League of Legends' Yasuo takes some of the best bits of his predecessors and mixes them up in a pretty fun way -- provided that you can stomach yet another samurai.

This Just Cause 2 multiplayer trailer is suitably crazy

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 04:45 AM PST

God bless modders; they don't settle for less. When Just Cause 2 was released, it was praised for its huge expansive world and chaotic, sandbox fun. But modders asked the question "Wouldn't this be even better with like.... about a couple hundred people playing multiplayer?" And by the looks of the trailer above... yes. Yes it would.

The new Multiplayer Mode DLC for Just Cause 2 looks like the ultimate "dicking around in co-op game" of all time. There's races on land, sea, and air; massive shootouts; and just the sheer craziness that's going to happen when there's a huge amount of people in a single virtual world with no rules. Of course, I've heard reports of some bad server lag and the game being unable to cope with such a large amount of player characters inside it but this seems to be a mod where players will make their own fun.

Unknown Worlds' next game is Subnautica

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST

The studio behind Natural Selection 2 has started talking about its next big project, Subnautica. Described as "an open world, underwater exploration and construction game," this wonderful-sounding game is very much in its early days. "Subnautica is not in 'alpha,' it is an idea that is just starting to be mouled into its first playable incarnations," writes the team.

Concept art and selections from the soundtrack are being shared, as are descriptions of what's sounding like a highly ambitious title. Players will be able to "design, construct, and crew submarine vessels" that can withstand harsh underwater environments and the bizarre creatures that are able to thrive in such areas. Gosh, it all sounds so great, though admittedly much is being left to our imaginations at this point in development.

That said, I'm glad to know such an interesting game concept is in capable hands.

Nominees for Destructoid's best 2013 multiplatform game

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

2013 saw the launch of two new consoles. Well, three if you want to get technical and count the Ouya, which... Moving on. The new machinery rekindled old rivalries, divided households, and pit brothers against one another in an epic struggle to determine whether Knack is better than Ryse: Son of Rome.

As joyous as the renewal of this bitter feud as been, sometimes it's nice to come together, break some bread, and meet on common ground to discuss multiplatform games. As long as nobody brings up any exclusive DLC or inequalities in resolution or framerate, I think everything will be fine. We can pretty much all agree on two things: The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct was a load of crap and the following list of non-exclusive titles are totally awesome.

LEGO The Hobbit sure looks familiar

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST

This trailer for LEGO The Hobbit checks all of the usual boxes for these titles. Coming off of LEGO The Lord of the Rings and its rather neat open-ended world, I'm curious to see how this new game will differ. The silliness is still firmly in tact, but that's a given at this point.

LEGO The Hobbit spans the first two films of Peter Jackson's trilogy, An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug, the latter of which we get to see only a little of here. I suppose there will inevitably be a follow-up game, then? We need closure! The audience I was a part of for Smaug groaned so hard at that closing shot. Not sure what they were expecting.

Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD gets a Collector's Edition

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 03:15 AM PST

Square Enix has announced a Collector's Edition for PS3 release Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster. Set for release on March 18, 2014, this edition will only be available at the Square Enix Online Store, priced at $79.99.

A hardcover art book contains 40 pages from the world of Spiria as well as the PS3 games. Tucked alongside the games will be the Final Fantasy X HD Remaster soundtrack, with more than six hours of music on one Blu-ray disc. Five lithographs of artwork from the games are also included.

A little note for Vita owners: The Vita version of the game will have Final Fintasy X HD Remaster on the game card, with Final Fantasy X-2 HD as a PSN download. Hmm. Bummer.

Both titles will be available on March 18, and both will support cross-save with the PS3 versions.

So much great game music was released this past month

You know the drill: another month, ten more game soundtracks to review. We usually have a pick of the month, but there was so much great music released this time around, I decided to recognize four separate releases as our top picks: Square Enix's Cure SQ and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Nintendo Famicom Music, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

But that's not all, we have some other fun stuff, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Jake Kaufman's Ultionus, and Square Enix's Christmas album. All of this and more, complete with samples, below!

Good news PlayStation 3 owners, you will finally be able to play Minecraft tomorrow. The PlayStation blog just announced that Minecraft will be available on the PlayStation 3 in North America on December 17. This version will have all the same features as the Xbox 360 version, and downloadable texture packs and skins will be available soon.

The release announcement didn't include a price, but we can assume it will be $20 like the Xbox version.

Destiny may require you to group up for end-game missions

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 02:30 AM PST

Unlike Titanfall, it is possible to play Destiny all by your lonesome, and ignore all the grouping and social features -- to a point. Bungie's Jason Jones explained exactly what they have planned to Game Informer, and it looks like you'll be able to enjoy most, but not all of the game solo.

Jones says that "You absolutely are going to be able to play Destiny by yourself and have the same kind of fun shooter-experience that you could have in a single-player campaign," but he goes on to also state, "I would say that there's some sort of - if you wanted to talk about it in MMO terms, you'd say 'end-game activities', but some of the most intense non-competitive activities in the game do require cooperation. They require a group of players to tackle at once."

This should come as no surprise to loot game fanatics, as many titles have a soft requirement for end-game raids, including Borderlands 2 and Diablo III's Inferno Mode. Of course, there are freaks of nature out there who can go at it solo regardless of the design, but for the vast majority of you, expect to do some grouping at some point.

The auction for 38 Studios assets happened, and while the Rise of Legends and Rise of Nations franchises sold for $320,000, no one made a good offer for Kingdoms of Amalur. 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling thinks that the series is a "billion dollar franchise", but it looks like no one else thinks so, or at least they didn't make a good enough offer. Other franchises that failed to find a buyer include 38 studios MMO, called project Copernicus, and a social gaming platform called "Helios".

I'm glad to see that the Rise of Legends and Nations franchises were picked up. I am curious to see who bought them, and to see what will happen to them. I loved those games, and I would be excited to see them continue. It's also a little sad to see no one jump on the Amalur series, but I'm sure that eventually they will find a home.

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST

All week long we'll be bringing you the Dtoid staff's nominees for various game of the year genres and categories, and tacked on to each will be a community choice poll where you can weigh in with your choices for which games you think should win. But because Game of the Year is such a weighty category, we decided we'd best give it its very own post!

Below are many of the most noteworthy games released this year. Go pick your favorite! Just fill in your choice, click the vote button, and then hit the comments to argue amongst yourselves. We'll be pulling quotes from the community when we recap the votes next week, so if you liked a game, sound off!

Tune in December 23 for the results. Have fun!

Here are some videos of Steam Machines in action

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST

Thanks to the magic of YouTube, some of the people lucky enough to receive one of the 300 beta Steam Machines have been able to share their impressions of the system. The OS looks like exactly like Steam's Big Picture Mode, with the option to switch over to a Linux desktop. Most of the videos report the controller being very lightweight, but this is probably due to it being a prototype that was made on a 3D printer.

There are videos available of people playing Metro Last Light, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. The graphics look really good, and one thing I noticed that was interesting is that the graphics settings have been simplified in Metro to one slider for overall quality.

Club Nintendo handing out random Pizza Hut giftcards

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST

In case you didn't know -- Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime used to be the Senior Director of Marketing at Pizza Hut before he landed his gig at the Big N. So it's no surprise then that Nintendo has worked out a deal with the pizza chain, and has given out random $40 gift cards for "the biggest Wii U fans."

To be eligible for selection you need to be a Club Nintendo fan, but not much more information was given. I have to say, this is a pretty cool promotion! Maybe Reggie can convince them to bring back The Big New Yorker -- aka the best pizza of all time.

Nominees for Destructoid's 2013 Game of the Year

Posted: 16 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST

The year of our Lord Two Thousand Thirteen was a ridiculous and amazing year for videogames. One of the best, I'd say.

The idea of narrowing down this year to ten games seems crazy, doesn't it? But, after much deliberation, we've done just that. Chances are that one or two of your favorites for 2013 are not among our top ten nominees for 2013 Game of the Year. I know how you feel. The entire Destructoid staff knows how you feel. There were just that many good games.

Pick up Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective for a dollar

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST

Some Capcom things are on sale right now on iOS and PSN.

Notably, you can get Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (from the creator of Ace Attorney) for $.99, down from $10 normally. I actually just found my DS copy of Ghost Trick, which I still need to play, while digging through boxes yesterday for mini usb cables.

I hear the zany murder-mystery is an absolute delight, though. Phant-astic. You should play it and then keep bugging me to finally get around to doing so, two years late.

Syrup-rise! There's a MapleStory 2 coming and it's in 3D

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 09:00 PM PST

While this CGI trailer isn't likely to be totally representative of the final, in-game MapleStory 2, it's pretty damn adorable. It looks a bit like something out of Sony Pictures Animation. And those ample mushrooms are so cute!

I've never played MapleStory, but I know that it's still going strong today, which is impressive. It will be interesting to see how weathered fans and inquisitive newcomers react once it hits beta early 2014.

The 3D alone is a jarring change. Coupled with a new gameplay system, MapleStory fans may empty their bowels in confusion before skittering under the furniture, hissing as they go back to their familiar, original MapleStory.
