The best and worst games of the week - Just say Yes to Ys

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

On the second week of December Destructoid's reviews brought me, one sweet RPG called Ys.

Okay, that's about as far as I'm going with turning this weeks review round-up into some sort of Christmas jingle. But feel free to keep the lyrics going in the comments below.

As for the rest of the reviews... well you can tell it's the second week of the last month of the year. The releases are slowing up, to keep the holiday blockbusters at the top of everyone's Christmas lists, but there's till some fun to be had -- especially on the PC side of things.

Oh and Peggle 2 is here! Who doesn't love pachinko on Ecstasy?

Christmas album hints at possible new Mana game

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

A recently released Christmas album from Square Enix suggests that a new game in the fabled Mana series may currently be in the works.

As seen in the track listings for the X'mas Collections II, track nine -- which references the Japanese Mana series's name 'Seiken Densetsu' -- is an X'mas edit for a unannounced future project.

Hopefully, if this pans out to be true, the game is not for mobile -- as was the case with the most recent title in the franchise, Circle of Mana

New Ultra Street Fighter IV trailer shows every change

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST

Ultra Street Fighter IV is coming early next year, and we have a ton of new screenshots to show you, as well as an updated trailer. The video shows off a ton of new features, like online training, which allows you to practice anywhere in the world, double ultras, improved online features, and how to purchase or update the game from previous versions.

I'm really surprised at how long Street Fighter IV's legs are. As the video says in the intro "this fight ain't over yet!" Expect a huge showing of Ultra at EVO 2014, and tons of coverage from Destructoid.

My Rolento...yes, my Rolento is ready.

Rainbow 6: Patriots needed to be remade, may get new name

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

Speaking with IGN, Ubisoft North American president, Laurent Detoc recently shed some light on why Rainbow 6: Patriots is "still cooking" and had to be moved over to next-gen consoles.

“We had a core team. They had a good vision. They got started, and then the game wasn't working. So [they had] to start again,” Detoc explained to IGN.

“...Rainbow had to be remade,” he continued. “Now they’re going to have the benefit of the new consoles, if and when it comes out. It’s one of those examples where you try, it doesn't work, you try again. If it doesn't work, we're not going to bring it to you.”

Additionally, in the interview, Detoc commented on the speculation that the game may drop the Patriots moniker in lieu of something more appropriate depending on whether the developers change the game thematic tones.

“Could it become a shooter with another name in the end, because the team doesn't want to do counter-terrorist guys?" Detoc said. "Say they want to be in a mercenary setting? That’s possible.”

A love letter to Cacodemons, Carmack, and Doom

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST

[In honor of Doom's 20th anniversary earlier this week, Max shares this remembrance. Want to see your own blog appear on our front page? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon]

When I was eight years old, my dad brought home my first computer that was just mine. I'm sure he was tired of having me on his machine all the time and decided this was the best way to solve this problem. Dad was like that.

Turning on my beige mystery box was a magical feeling. I had just discovered the internet, and Napster was ever looming around the corner. My gaming loves at the time revolved around Rogue Squadron and Star Fox 64. But once I had that computer, everything changed for me.

Getting to know the people behind the Mega Man Board Game

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

It's safe to say that the Mega Man Board game Kickstarter is a massive success. In just under 24 hours it cleared $150,000, which far exceeds its $70,000 goal. But in an odd turn of events, Capcom is not funding the game -- they just gave board game manufacturer Jasco the license to create a project on their own.

I had a chat with Jasco Games president and founder, Jason Hawronsky, to see how a project like this comes to life, where you'll be able to pick it up once it's actually out, and what we can expect from Jasco and Mega Man in the future.

Ookibloks on iOS is a pretty awesome action puzzle game

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST

After a recommendation from a colleague yesterday, I stumbled across Ookibloks -- an unassuming puzzle game starring a cute monkey. Five hours later I was in a haze of blocks and bananas, completely unaware of where my afternoon went. The premise is relatively simple -- crabs have stolen the main character's banana stash (Donkey Kong Country style), so you'll help him get it back by way of swipe controls.

Each puzzle arena is filled with blocks -- some of them are hazards, some have enemies hovering around them, and others are bananas, which you'll want to fling into to capture. You can't capture a block while you're standing right next to it, so you'll have to fling around by swiping your device until you can slam into it.

It's a free add-supported game, but the purchase of any IAPs (including the $0.99 option) remove them entirely. There are other IAPs designed as power-ups, but they're completely unnecessary to finish the game, and you can earn them anyway through a cute capsule toy minigame.

If you're looking for a fun little puzzler to spend the weekend with, check out Ookibloks.
