Post Master will put you in control of the mail

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST

Excalibur Publishing, the publisher behind popular PC simulation titles such as Euro Truck Simulator and Chemical Spillage Simulation, has revealed yet another management game, Post Master. With a visual design which calls to mind classic SimCity, players will operate and maintain mail delivery services in an ever-growing city.

I think this looks like a lot of fun, but I'm the sort of guy who gets really into efficiency and supply chain stuff, so take that as you will. I do really appreciate that it's not a game where you actually control a mailman and have to run from dogs or some other such nonsense. That could have been terribly dull.

Post Master is due in 2014 for Windows and Mac.

How to get to North Yankton in Grand Theft Auto Online

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST

If you've played Grand Theft Auto V, you'll remember the game's prologue begins with a heist in the wintry local of North Yankton. As it's just an introductory area and not part of the San Andreas region, it shouldn't be available in the game's online multiplayer mode.

But it can be! Provided you follow this (slightly convoluted) method in this video from CVG, you can revisit North Yankton with your friends in Grand Theft Auto Online. Pretty cool, and possibly a limited-time offer if for some reason a future patch prevents it.

Nice: Catacomb Kids will be funded on Kickstarter

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

The Kickstarter for Catacomb Kids will be funded when the campaign closes in approximately a day's time. Designer FourbitFriday has release a couple of video demonstrations since we last checked in with this roguelike platformer, the newest of which can be seen above.

The attention to detail is impressive. As shown in the walkthrough, you can light up a boulder with fire magic and push it into water to cause it to boil, cooking dangerous fish alive and making an otherwise poisonous mushroom edible. Some rather neat systems to tinker around with.

Then we get to an earlier video, embedded below, that shows the almost laughable versatility of a small rock. Crazy. It's not too late to contribute to the crowdfunding drive if you like what you see here. I certainly do.

CRAP! Frostivus is cancelled...again

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

Just when everyone was 100% confident that nothing could go wrong, something goes wrong! Frostivus, the best holiday real or fake, is cancelled once again. Curiously enough though, it isn't the work of the Greevils this time. No, this time it's by "the only king that matters." Also, the Skeleton King puppet on the top left of the page is gone if you mouse over its door. I'm sure that's just a coincidence, though. And you can no longer pick him in-game. Also just a coincidence I bet.

The background of the page asks for a commander who can supply their own legion, as well as mentioning a lost Greevil, warden of the woods, and two pups. So the Hero Legion Commander is pretty much confirmed to drop with the Frostivus patch, which is rumored to hit on December 21, the longest night of the year.

Man! I already ordered my Frostivus gifts!

Review: Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

Genre blending is becoming more and more common as developers explore different gameplay styles. As with puzzle and role-playing, rhythm elements are often folded into otherwise unrelated games to various degrees.

BeatBuddy: Tale of the Guardians puts quite a bit of focus on the musical gameplay. It is sometimes about exploration, sometimes features puzzles, sometimes requires combat action, but is always considering how those affect the overall audio character. Music is the entree here, and everything else serves as garnish.

Samurai Gunn stealth released on PC today

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 08:45 AM PST

Samurai Gunn (from boy genius Beau Blyth) has been flying under the radar for a while, but now it's available for the entire world to experience. The frantically-paced Bushido brawler released on Steam and the Humble Store today without telling anyone it was coming.

The fact that it stealthily released isn't the sticking point, though. Samurai Gunn has seriously impressed in its pre-release builds. In fact, it was my favorite game that I played at PAX Prime. This is one title that you'll want to make a point of looking into.

Pure Pool bound for PlayStation 4

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST

A list of the of the better billiards simulators in recent years has to include Hustle Kings, originally released on PlayStation 3 and later on Vita. Now the show will be coming to PlayStation 4, as developer Voofoo has announced their work on a new pool hall experience, Pure Pool, in a post on the PlayStation Blog.

The team, as ever, seems fixated on producing the most photo-realistic pool hall to date. Considering the faces of these character models, they might want to downplay that and focus on the physics (which have always been top notch). Also, while we're making suggestions, it would be very nice to be able to increase the "age" of a table's felt to fall more in line with what an actual pool hall's table might be like. Those tables in Hustle Kings were faster than my prom date.

Notch accidentally interviewed at Valve, turned down job

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 08:15 AM PST

Most people that are even remotely interested in the videogames industry would figuratively kill (maybe literally!) for a shot at interviewing at Valve, let alone securing a job there. Markus Persson, better known to the gaming community as "Notch", did the former on accident, and then turned down a job offer.

In an excerpt from his book Minecraft: The Unlikely Tale of Markus 'Notch' Persson and the Game that Changed Everything, which was republished by AllThingsD, Notch tells of the time that he was invited to visit Valve as Minecraft's beta was taking off and generated quite a bit of buzz.

After touring the studio and meeting Gabe Newell, Notch sat down in a meeting room to chat with one of Valve's human resources representatives. He told a bit about himself and his plans for Minecraft before realizing that he was midway through a job interview.

Eventually, he was told by the member of HR that the company wanted him to become a Valve employee, and asked if he was interested in joining. Notch politely declined the offer, stating that it was one of the toughest decisions he's ever had to make.

His reasoning for turning down employment at Valve was ambitious and laudable. "Somehow, I felt that Minecraft was my chance to create a Valve, rather than work at Valve," he said. He may not have created a behemoth of that magnitude yet, but he's certainly on the right path.

Review: Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro headphones

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

If you read this site regularly you'll know that I've reviewed a lot of headsets. A lot of gaming headsets, I should say. I'm not out to dump on any of them, but I want to start this review by saying that these Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro headphones sound better than any of the phones I've reviewed for this site.

Flat out. No question.

Videogames Clubhouse: What's going on with Knack!

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 07:45 AM PST

Knack and I have had a complicated relationship. When it was announced I was excited even thought we didn't know much about it. I thought it would be a decent game for kids until I played it at PAX. Hot damn what I played was awful.

Now, my cohost Phil doesn't hate this game nearly as much as I do. He hated it up until launch but has now told me it's "pretty ok." Looks like we're going to settle the score on today's episode of Phil and Spencer's Videogames Clubhouse. We're playing through two hours of Knack starting at 2:00pm Pacific over on Dtoid.tv. Get excited!

Contest: Win a copy of DuckTales: Remastered!

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST

I have in my chubby little hands three copies of DuckTales: Remastered, and instead of playing all three simultaneously on all the massive TVs I have because I am so rich (and also my six arms because I am almost an octopus), I've decided to give them away to lucky Dtoid readers!

To win, just post a picture in this thread of something that makes you go "WOO-OOH" like the DuckTales theme song. (Keep them SFW, please.) You can enter as many times as you like, and the contest is open to anyone in the U.S. You have until this Sunday, December 15 at 11:59pm Pacific to enter, and please also tell me which console (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U) you'd prefer (or if you have no preference).

Good luck! And don't forget, our Huge members get automatic entry into all contests (as well as a bunch of other awesome perks). It's pretty great!

Double Fine announces Hack n Slash

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 07:15 AM PST

Double Fine Productions has announced yet another new game today, Hack n Slash, revealed with a new website showing a singular image (seen above). If you want to know a little more, you're going to have to work for it.

Clicking that image on the site starts the download of a file with a JPEG file extension which is, in reality, a ZIP archive containing a video, the game's title theme and a text file. The rabbit hole goes still deeper than that, as the video features tons of single-frame flashes of the same runic text seen in the grid of the original image.

For their part, Double Fine swears this isn't an ARG, just some teases players can dig up if they're into that sort of thing. Of course, the way you get that message is by viewing the properties of the downloaded file, a step many may not even consider trying, so I'm sure nobody will be confused by any of it.

Curious as I am, I draw the line at capturing single frames of video to translate runes. I'll leave that to the rest of you Internet Matlocks.

Train Simulator creator branching out with new sim games

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST

The company behind Train Simulator, Railsimulator.com, has rebranded itself as Dovetail Games. The name change represents a shift in focus to that of simulation beyond merely trains.

CEO Paul Jackson says the team is "still completely committed" to its Train Simulator line, "but we know that in order to continue to grow our business, as we have done year-on-year since launching in 2009, we need to reach out into other new areas." Dovetail wants to break into "new simulation options," though specifics weren't given.

Lots of choices here, though I suspect the company won't go as niche as Airport Ground Crew Simulation. (That's a real game, by the way.) What would your dream sim be? I want a modern-day Odell Down Under, which will probably never happen.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is $3.74 in Ubisoft XBL sale

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST

Now thorough December 16, a selection of Ubisoft games are reduced in price on Xbox Live. The standout offer here is Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, a game much better than its name would suggest. That's down to $3.74, which is impulse-buy territory for me.

Elsewhere in the sale, there's titles like Outland ($2.49), Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game ($2.49), Cloudberry Kingdom ($2.49), Beyond Good & Evil HD ($2.49), From Dust ($3.74), and Rayman 3 HD ($2.49). Some great deals to be had if you're missing any of these titles.

EA named one of best companies for workplace equality

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

Electronic Arts catches a ton of criticism for its business practices, but it deserves some praise for its workplace habits. For the second year in a row, the Humans Rights Campaign has named EA one of the "Best Places to Work" after it scored 100 percent on the organization's Corporate Equality Index.

As reported by GamesIndustry International, EA's success in this department is attributable in large part to its commitment to its Diversity & Inclusion Team. Andre Chambers, the diversity team's lead, responded to the recognition by saying ""We're very proud that EA has been named a 'Best Place to Work' by HRC again this year and that our organization has been recognized for providing a workplace that is inclusive and where everyone feels welcome."

It's also worth noting that of the 304 companies to receive the award, EA is the only one whose exclusive focus is on videogames. It doesn't get said all that often, but it's well-deserved right now -- good on you, EA.

Peggle 2 is getting head-to-head Duel mode for free

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 05:45 AM PST

While it was disappointing to hear that Peggle 2's multiplayer is online only, the real tragedy here is that the game is currently an Xbox One exclusive. A future update will mark the return of Peggle's Duel mode and, thankfully, it supports both local and online play.

There aren't any specifics on release info yet, but the update will be free.

"I'm also happy to announce that Duels are just the beginning," wrote producer Jared Neuss in a Facebook post breaking the news. "There are lots of surprises in store for Peggle 2 fans and we'll be bringing you regular updates as we continue to expand and add to the world that we've built."

I'm now watching YouTube videos of people playing Peggle 2. It's come to this.

Go get Volgarr the Viking for half price on Steam

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 05:15 AM PST

Tony Ponce laid it out in his review, but to reiterate, Volgarr the Viking is worth your time if you're down for a challenge. The 2D action game is half price in a 48-hour sale on Steam which started earlier this morning. At a discounted $5.99, this is an easy recommendation to make.

The only thing that held me back from playing Volgarr sooner than I did was its art style. It's a bit ugly, particularly in screenshots. But in motion -- and scaled properly -- you grow accustomed to the look. The animation is actually quite good, for that matter. There's also the whole "trying not to die" thing, which serves as a perfectly good distraction.

Rastan fans, you must get this.

Be careful with this Gran Turismo 6 money exploit

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 04:45 AM PST

YouTube user Radical Dreamer has stumbled upon an exploit in Gran Turismo 6 that can generate 20 million credits in a matter of minutes. Sounds too good to be true, right? I had Dale test out the glitch and he ran into some major issues with freezing that required a hard reboot. Basically, if you choose to do this (instructions below), make sure you aren't in the car you're about to sell. Otherwise, GT6 will freeze every time you enter your garage.

  • Make sure you have the 1.01 patch and buy the Mercedes-Benz Concept from GT Vision
  • Save
  • Delete your GT6 game data under the Game Data Utility in XMB
  • Launch the game again -- skip the patch-download prompt -- and sell the car, which is now called "[2055]"

Should you inadvertently get into the same situation as Dale, you'll need to repatch the game and change cars to get GT6 back to a functional state.

Happy 20th Anniversary, Doom

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST

On December 10, 1993, Doom was released. Although it was far from the first FPS game I ever played (I was rocking Catacomb and Wolfenstein already), it had a profound effect on me, as I tirelessly spent hundreds of hours accessing every little secret it had to offer.

It was also one of the only videogames my father and I played together, and one of the fondest memories I have of him. How do you play a single-player FPS in tandem you ask? Well, one of us handled the movement keys and the spacebar for opening doors, and the other was tasked with switching and firing weapons. It's a lot more fun than you'd think, and led to some tense and particularly funny moments.

Since then, I've always held a reverence for the Doom series, because it just gets so much right. This is before movie-like linear tunnel simulator FPS games took over the market -- where mini-sandboxes ruled supreme, hiding millions of tiny secrets and alcoves at every turn. No one will forget the impact Doom had on the industry, and it has securely cemented its place in the eternal pantheon of FPS games.

Telltale's Game of Thrones deal is multi-year, multi-game

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 04:15 AM PST

Telltale Games is working on a bunch of games right now, from The Walking Dead to Tales from the Borderlands to The Wolf Among Us. Which is awesome and also slightly worrying. And now, as of this past weekend's VGX announcement, we can also add Game of Thrones to that list -- the rumors were true. HBO has given a little bit more to go on.

The partnership is for multiple years and spans multiple titles, according to the company. Telltale's Game of Thrones will be episodic, so, that makes sense. Release platforms include "home consoles," PC, Mac, and mobile devices in 2014. Telltale CEO Dan Connors noted in a press release that the game "will put [players] in control of the epic stories of warfare, intrigue, violence and revenge that we know and love."

This can't possibly be any worse than some of the other games based on A Song of Ice and Fire. If anything, I'm just worried about the release schedule needed to take on all of these projects.

Mega Man Board Game shows off Guts Man and Fire Man

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

That Mega Man board game project is still chugging along, and it has new figures for Guts Man and Fire Man to show off. So far all of the figures look pretty detailed, so I can't wait to get my hands on the finished product.

As far as the creation of the actual game goes, Jasco has obtained the approval of Capcom, and now they're waiting on the "OK" from Kickstarter. After submitting a project it should only take a couple of days to hear back, so expect some sort of news soon if you're interested.

Battlestar Galactica Online devs working on new space MMO

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 03:45 AM PST

The developers behind Battlestar Galactica Online are working on a new space game, called Entropy. Entropy is out now on Steam Early Access, so you can check it out for $19.99 if you want to. It looks a lot like EVE Online to me, but with less spreadsheets and sadness.

The developer, Artplant, describe the game as "a sandbox science fiction MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) with a strong focus on freeform gameplay and large-scale space combat." The Early Access release includes multiplayer space combat, a player-driven trading system, mining, salvaging, exploration, and a dynamic missions system. That's a lot more available than some other titles on Early Access, so it sound's like a good buy to me for twenty bucks.

SOE explains what EverQuest Next Landmark actually is

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 03:15 AM PST

SOE just released a quick video that answers the question, "what is EverQuest Next Landmark?" Well, it's a game of exploration, monsters to fight, and building just about anything you want. The video shows off building a house and a tower, how archways and angles are easy to create, terrain alteration, and inside decoration and furnishing.

I can't wait to try this out for myself. The alpha for EverQuest Next Landmark is supposed to be starting soon, and hopefully it's actually as fun as it looks in these videos.

Inafune's pirate game, KAIO, delayed into 2014

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST

Hey remember in 2011 when we told you that Inafune's adorable pirate game KAIO: King of Pirates was coming in 2012? Well he heard that you like delays, so he put a delay in his delay, and now it's dropping in 2014 -- for real this time.

The game is a joint effort from Marvelous AQL and Comcept, and is still slated for the Nintendo 3DS. Hopefully Inafune can ship this game soon, so he can get Mighty No. 9 fully on track.

Twitch raised $1.22 million for Extra Life

Twitch has done double good.

First off, Extra Life was a success. The annual charity to raise money for Children's Miracle Network had 7,500 Twitch participants raising $1.22 million for the cause. Awesome.

A pop-up store was put together to help raise funds for the Red Cross to benefit Typhoon relief efforts, with 100 pervent of Twitch's profits going to the cause. They say that 6,300 limited edition shirts pulled in $82,751. Twitch rounded it up to $90,000 for Red Cross.

New Battlefield 4 patch launches on PC

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 02:30 AM PST

With future DLC on hold, DICE have been busy trying to fix the many issues that Battlefield 4 has been suffering from since its launch. Part of that effort has been reflected in their latest PC patch, which aims to fix a whole bunch of things.

Chief among them is to alleviate a frequent client crash (those are never fun) along with several stability adjustments. DICE have also addressed a Defuse bug where the defending team could win a round without actually defusing the bomb, provided that the bomb had been disarmed in the previous round -- seriously, how did that come about in the first place?

Minecraft 1.7.4 is out now with Twitch streaming support

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 02:15 AM PST

Minecraft version 1.7.4 is out today, and this update will let you stream to Twitch with a simple key press. To set this up, you'll need to link your Twitch and Mojang accounts together, which only takes a few minutes. Just head to your Mojang account page, log in, click settings, and then you'll see an option to connect to a Twitch account.

Once you launch Minecraft, there is a new option in the menu for broadcast settings. Here you can control things like quality and bandwidth. Just hit F6 while playing, and you'll be streaming. You are also able to see Twitch chat messages along with the normal Minecraft chat.

This is a super easy way to stream Minecraft, and it's one of the best Twitch integrations I have seen in a game. I will definitely be streaming now while I play, just because it's so easy.

'There will be more Xbox One demos' says Major Nelson

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST

Xbox One owners may have noticed that there's a lack of demos on the platform - as in, basically none at all. Major Nelson has responded to the issue, noting that it's just temporary, stating, "[There will] be more demos for Xbox One as the platform goes forward." Nelson was responding to a specific comment on his blog, asking about a potential Peggle 2 demo. As long as this actually happens, so far so good.

Now, if I may rant for a second on one particular aspect of this demo situation that will affect the platform going forward. Apparently, developers are no longer required to create demos for Xbox Live Arcade experiences -- this is a massive disappointment. One of my favorite things about XBLA over PSN is that every downloadable game had a demo, full stop. If I wanted to know how a game played for myself, I knew that I could go on the 360 100% of the time and try it out. Heck, sometimes I'd try out an XBLA demo to buy a PS+ sale game, because the demo wasn't on the PSN. It was a consistency that I really enjoyed, and now, it seems like there's less of an emphasis on demos.

It's a shame, as it gives the consumer less power over their purchasing decisions.

This mecha ARPG from Arc System Works looks badass

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST

Later this month in Japan, Damascus Gear: Tokyo War Begins will launch on the PlayStation Vita. It's from Arc System Works, developer of Guilty Gear, amongst other modern classic gems.

Based on the trailer it looks like a hack and slash game with a visual style that's strikingly similar to the Front Mission series. Evidently you'll be able to collect loot just like any standard ARPG and customize your mechs. It'll launch on Christmas Day in Japan for 1,800 Yen, and I really hope it gets localized.

Get ready to create your own content for GTA Online, because the game's content creation tool is out today. You will be able to create deathmatches, team deathmatches, races, GTA races, and rally races. Any player created missions that are really good will be marked as "Rockstar Verified Jobs", so you won't have to waste your time playing garbage, which is really nice.

Rockstar is also working on bringing multiplayer heists into GTA Online, saying “We know many of you in the GTA Online community are super excited for the debut of co-operative Heists. Heists are currently in development and we are working very hard to get them as polished and as fun as they can be. Stay tuned for much more detail in the New Year.”

Call of Duty: Ghosts allegedly getting $3 wolf DLC

Posted: 09 Dec 2013 11:30 PM PST

Reddit user beta_crater has uncovered what appears to be a legit DLC card for an upcoming add-on for Call of Duty: Ghosts. The card says it all - it's a "Guard Dog Killstreak Skin" for use in Ghosts, that will change the Riley the dog multiplayer model into a wolf.

Just like any regular bit of cosmetic weapon DLC it'll cost less than your standard map pack (at $3 on December 12th), and similarly, it's completely optional. I really don't know what to say -- I thought everyone liked Riley? Also, where the hell is our corgi DLC, Dale North?

That huge 3DS system update is live right now

Posted: 09 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST

The Nintendo 3DS keeps getting better and better, and the newest system update is no exception. Version 7.0.0-13 adds the ability to connect to the Miiverse, and link your Nintendo Network ID to access a unified wallet for the Wii U and 3DS. When logging in after the update, double and triple check that you enter your information correctly, as the system can only link to one account.

This is the first step to having a real, fully connected account, but Nintendo still isn't quite there yet. With no ability to Cross-Buy Virtual Console games that are on both systems, you need to purchase each game twice to play on the Wii U and 3DS. Also, Nintendo hasn't clarified if you still need a police report to get your games back if your 3DS is missing or stolen.
