Clem isn't the only one returning in The Walking Dead S2

Posted: 01 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

Earlier today, Telltale Games' Twitter account Tweeted the above picture, with the text "A familiar face returns in #TheWalkingDead Season Two premiere episode, "All That Remains," releasing this month." For folks that have played the game before, that is clearly Omid in the picture, though we have yet to see if the decisions you made at the end of season one will affect how Clementine interacts with him.

Personally, this only excites me more, as there was no sign of him in the teaser trailer they released in October, and my choices at the end of the first season kind of involved him. I can't wait to sink my teeth into the new season -- and subsequently pull out my hair as I wait for new episodes to be released once I beat the first episode -- later this month.

McDonald's promo giving away 70M Twisted Pixel games

Posted: 01 Dec 2013 10:55 AM PST

McDonald's is gearing up to begin its new One Hot Holiday promotion on December 3 that features Xbox One bundles as its grand prize. That's not so crazy; it seems like every corporation is running some sort of contest to win next-gen consoles. However, McDonald's also happens to be giving away a whole lot of copies of Twisted Pixel titles.

According to the contest's rule page, some winners will receive a code to download either The Maw or Ms. Splosion Man. The odds of receiving this are one in four, and a total of 35 million of each will be distributed. Another 14.5 million copies of Aqua are also in the mix.

This is a great opportunity to introduce some fantastic Twisted Pixel titles to some people that otherwise might not have had any exposure to the quirky developer. The only catch is that you have to eat McDonald's to stand a chance.

You should watch Videogames Changed the World

Posted: 01 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

Following on from 2009's Gameswipe special, acerbic critic and former PC Zone writer Charlie Brooker has delivered another excellent videogames program this time on Channel 4. How Videogames Changed the World is a two-hour special charting the lineage of videogames from Pong and Space Invaders to The Last of Us and Minecraft. Of course it helps if you're in the UK and can just watch it on Channel 4's on-demand site but if you're somewhere else in the world, I'm sure you'll have your own means of watching (*cough* YouTube).

If you've watched a Charlie Brooker program (or read his excellent TV Go Home) you'll know it's a mix of interviews, clips, and social commentary. The history of videogames is told over 25 notable titles with some interesting picks for the defining games that have shaped what we play today. There's appearances from the likes of Tim Schafer, Nolan Bushnell, Will Wright, David Braben, and Peter Molyneux.

Personally speaking it was quite something to see Hover Bover, one of the first games I ever played on my parent's Commodore 64, on a TV screen. I say "TV screen" I actually watched the program on my laptop today whilst hungover. Ooops.

Brooker recently gave an interview with The Guardian saying how hard it was to get someone to commission a show about videogames which seems a shame. Mind you, earlier this week Channel 4 also show a program about young Brits on holiday in the Mediterranean which involved them drinking each other's vomit and urine so maybe videogames can do without TV.

Liberation Maiden Sin emancipates Japan this week

Posted: 01 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

Books are pretty nice. You can read them. They can also be used to provide warmth. That's an especially useful function of theirs should you ever find yourself taking refuge in a library after climate change suddenly leaves your city flooded and freezing cold. At least that's the take-home message I gathered from the film The Day After Tomorrow, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid.

Liberation Maiden Sin isn't quite a book. I wouldn't burn it to stay toasty on a cool winter night, at any rate. Blu-ray discs probably house some pretty gnarly toxic chemicals, but that's neither here nor there. The visual novel from Grasshopper Manufacture and 5pb. is slated to arrive in Japan on December 5, giving PlayStation 3 owners with plenty of words and static images to enjoy.

Sup Holmes is stabbed by sound with Michael Molinari

Posted: 01 Dec 2013 06:15 AM PST

Today on Sup Holmes we kick off Adult Swimember with Soundodger+ and Basketbelle's Michael Mollinari. Rumor has it that Michael also on the iOS version of Bit.Trip BEAT, which is one of my favorite games ever.

Michael's relatively new to the game development scene, but between Soundodger+'s illustrious soundtrack (including artists like Disasterpeace, Austin Wintory, and DannyB) and Basketbelle's genre defying mash up of sports-game mechanics and dream like visuals and scenarios, there plenty of reason to keep a close eye on him. Join us at 1pm PST/4pm EST for the whole shebang.

Review: Senran Kagura Burst

Posted: 01 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

Senran Kagura Burst didn't receive a new, localized name when it was released on the 3DS eShop. That's kind of a shame, as a more comprehendable title for English speakers might have gone a long way to communicate what the game is about to its new audience.

They did leave in the word "Burst" though, which is important. It's the perfect word to describe the game. Senran Kagura Burst is a non-stop series of bursting of balloon-shaped breasts, bursting 500-hit combos, and bursting clothes exploding off of doll-like teenage girls. If you define "pornographic" as anything whose primary purpose is to stimulate and satiate your animal urges, then Senran Kagura Burst is your new porn game for 2013. It's like a compilation of all the "hottest scenes" from a regular beat-'em-up, without a lot of the design and pacing that holds those elements together in most well-made games.

They should have called it Boner Jams: The Game.

Teenage Pokemon: Breaking Boundaries

Posted: 01 Dec 2013 05:05 AM PST

[Teenage Pokemon is about that awkward phase between cute and cool, 1st and 3rd, young and old.]

It's common to hear that a new videogame "pushes boundaries". To break the rules, pave new ground, to break down the existing barriers between the player and the game -- some take it as a given that these are all inherently good things for a game to do. David Cage seems to think so. That's why he works so hard to use techniques not normally used in games to try to elicit "real emotional responses" in players. The developers of Pokemon X/Y seem to think so too. That's why they put so much stuff in their game designed to make the player feel physically and emotionally connected to the Pokemon world -- to break down the walls that separate us from the characters on the other side of the screen.

Over the past few years, we've seen internet cartoons about videogame characters see success for breaking their own set of barriers. Defying concepts of  "good taste" and "acceptable behavior" are often seen as selling points for modern animation. Show videogame characters behaving like people do when they're playing videogames, and you've likely got a hit on your hands, especially if you show them hurting each other, getting horny, or both. Not only does it come off as edgy and rebellious, but it makes the viewer feel like the in-game avatars they've been inhabiting all these years really are them. Feed the audience's narcissism, and they will feel close to you and the thing that you made. It's one of the oldest tricks in the book.

But how close and intimate to we really want to get to our videogames? Do we want to get so close to them that we can smell them? Where is the line between "edgy" and "disgusting"? Explore these questions and more in a very special, very spiritual episode of Teenage Pokemon.

Lindsay Lohan allegedly suing Rockstar Games over GTA V

Posted: 01 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST

You know it's a slow news weekend when I'm reporting on findings from celebrity news website TMZ, but alas here we go.

According to reports from the site, former Disney debutant Lindsay Lohan is suing Rockstar Games over, what she is claiming, is the use of her likeness throughout Grand Theft Auto V. Sources told TMZ that Lohan's lawyers are crafting a lawsuit demanding to be paid some serious money.

TMZ has compiled a few scenarios in the game that could, at best, resemble Lohan's lifestyle, but in my opinion they should fall under parody laws. Then again I'm not a lawyer.

So what does everyone else think? Is this a desperate cash grab from a fallen star, or does she actually have a decent case on her hands?

Just what you've been waiting for PC subjects, realistic fur technology is now available in Call of Duty Ghosts

A recent patch has added -- not only dynamically-lighted, soft and oh-so pettable fur to Riley, NPC wolves, and the attack dogs found in multiplayer -- but also a bevy of other PC improvements to performance and stability. PlayStation 3 and 4 users have also received fixes.
