The best and worst games of the week - Game of the Month Posted: 30 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST Thank goodness November is finally over. It was a hectic month -- that will go down in gaming history as one of the greatest ever -- thanks, in no part, to the launch of two brand spanking new consoles from both Sony and Microsoft. There was also the usual flood of major releases primed for the holiday madness like Tearaway, Forza Motorsport 5, Killzone: Shadow Fall, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Call of Duty: Ghosts. But more importantly there was one title that grabbed the attention of the Destructoid staff more than any other game this month and perhaps is just the kick a certain Nintendo console needs to sell like hotcakes this winter season. Scroll to the bottom to see our November Game of the Month winner! Read more... |
NCSoft giving away 5,000 copies of Guild Wars 2 Posted: 30 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST In one of the more spirited giveaways I've seen in recent years, NCSoft and ArenaNet are giving away 5,000 copies of Guild Wars 2 to folks willing to pledge their undying loyalty to the game on camera. For a chance to win a copy of the game's Heroic Edition, pledges will have to read the Guild Wars 2 Oath. The oath, which can be filled out Mad Libs style, should allow for quite a few creative entries. Don't wait too long, as entry for the contest ends December 3 at 11:59 PST. Those who are little camera shy, NCSoft is also offering both the Deluxe and Heroic edition of the game for 40% off till the end of the contest date. So haven't taken the plunge into Guild Wars 2 yet? Really, what's wrong with you? Well in any case, a complete list of rules for the contest can be found here. Read more... |
Want to take pervy photos, More! SoniComi is just for you Posted: 30 Nov 2013 08:30 AM PST Meet More! SoniComi, a sort of sexy take on Pokemon Snap. In this PlayStation 3 exclusive, headed for Japanese shores March 20, 2014, you play the part of a gravure photographer who get's to snap lovely "professional" pictures of the game's main protagonist Super Sonic. The game breaks down like a traditional adventure title, complete with scenes were you can talk to the model, but the real "highlight" for most aspiring photographers is all the costumes that can be unlocked for Super Sonic to wear. There are over a 1,000 costumes reported to unlock in the game's Ouka Shop. For a sneak peak at a few of the game's costumes (well I think you can classify them as that) make sure to check out the gallery below. Read more... |
Dead or Alive, Cubone and panty sniffing w/ Cristina Vee Posted: 30 Nov 2013 07:30 AM PST Last Sunday on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we were treated to company of Cristina Vee, voice actress for League of Legends, BlazBlue, Tekken: Blood Vengence, Skullgirls, Pokemon Origins and many other games and animated films. She is utterly charming, almost to the point of inducing speechlessness. On one hand you have her compelling underdog story -- learning to overcome shyness through discovering anime and its surrounding fan community, getting discovered online for singing anime theme songs, getting her first job in the industry as a teenager, and finally making it to the success she's found today. On the other hand, you have her personality -- a mix of wit, shyness, and slightly unhinged creativity. Over the course of the show she became Pokemon Cubone, sang about Rainicorns, and auditioned with me for the role of Marie Rose, the new Dead or Alive fighter. I made up lines for her to read on the spot about bunk beds and Burger King for her to read in-character. Her performance was flawless. Tecmo Koei would do well to sign her for the roll ASAP. We also talked about what it's like to be typecast, the growing attention that games are getting from Hollywood actors, what its like to to do voice acting for perverts and sex secenes, and so much more. Thanks again to Cristina for appearing on the show, and please tune in tomorrow at 1pm PST/4pm EST when we kick off Adult Swimbemer with Soundodger+'s Michael Molinari.

The Dismal Jesters, Virt and Buddy join the cast of Lisa Posted: 30 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST Lisa (the painful, boundry-pushing RPG) really sparked conversation when we posted about it last week. It seems to have picked up quite a few supporters since then as well. As of Thanksgiving, the game has been fully funded and has moved on stretch goals. The first is for additional content starring Buddy -- the last woman alive. Should the game reach $10K, we'll be graced with the opportunity to play as Buddy as she works to discover the events that caused Lisa's world to transform into the disgusting, dismal, disturbing place that it has become. Speaking of dismal, I'm proud to announce that Jim Sterling, Conrad Zimmerman and I will all be appearing in the game as NPCs. We'll be located in a place called Dismal Island, which will probably be a terrible place. From the looks of those silhouettes, we'll be joined by at least two other fixtures from our feel-bad comedy/videogame podcast. My bet is on Freaky Constantina and Willem Dafoe, but your guess is as good as mine. Other than what I learned from playing the demo, I don't have any inside info about Austin's plans for the game, and I want to keep it that way. I'd like to be as surprised as the rest of you the first time I boot up the game. I'm particularly excited to discover what Jake "Virt" Kaufman will be bringing to the table. While Lisa's creator/programmer/artist will be providing most of the game's soundtrack, Jake has signed on to contribute music to the game in some capacity. What started as a small passion project from a professional martial artist is slowly turning into a star-studded extravaganza. Just goes to show what's possible when you're unashamed of your weird ideas, and are willing to put time and effort into making them a reality.

Killzone: Shadow Fall patch fixes things and adds stuff Posted: 30 Nov 2013 05:30 AM PST A new patch for Guerrilla Games' Killzone: Shadow Fall has been released, altering certain aspects of the game's campaign, fixing various issues, and adding controller support for left-handed players. Chapters seven and eight, of Shadow Fall's single-player campaign have been improved; the end section of 'Secure the Target' has been shortened and 'Outcast' has been made less frustrating by having the collision ceiling raised. Meaning that you'll be able to fly over more buildings instead of just hitting into them and dying over and over and over and over. And over. Be sure to have a look at the full patch notes and let us know if you think Guerrilla has neglected to include a particular fix or feature that is still needed. Every green star & hidden stamp in Super Mario 3D World Posted: 30 Nov 2013 04:15 AM PST I'm still waiting to get my paws (you see what I did there) on Super Mario 3D World, as I unfortunately had to pick at least one game to leave on my Christmas list or I'd feel the fury from my lovely girlfriend. But if you've been busy scratching away at the latest Nintendo masterpiece, and are maybe having a hard time locating all 380 green stars or the 85 stamps hidden throughout, don't worry the folks over at GameXplain got your back covered. Their latest video walkthrough points the way to every secret item in just about 60 minutes. Wow, that's like seven hidden items a minute! Warning: If you don't want any of the game's locations spoiled, be warned that the video uses all in-game footage.

Earthbound Bash celebrates Mother for charity Posted: 30 Nov 2013 03:15 AM PST Ben Bizzle is an Earthbound fan. His friend James Hensiek is also an Earthbound fan. James has been diagnosed with cancer. When Ben found out about his friends diagnosis, he got in touch with Fangamer/Starman.net, who in turn got in touch with Earthbound/Mother creator Shigisato Itoi, who signed a copy of Earthbound to be auctioned off to support James through his treatment. That auction is happening tomorrow as part of the Earthbound Bash, a weekend-long live stream event celebrating Earthbound and auctioning off Earthbound-related stuff for charity. In addition to the signed Earthbound cartridge for James, there's a variety of other Earthbound collectibles up for sale, with proceeds going towards Speak your Silence. There will be plenty of special appearances from members of the Mother/Earthbound fan community, including an live interview with Marcus Lindblom, Earthbound translator/localizer/ Pencil Eraser creator. Anthony Carboni will be conducting the interview, hot off his appearance on the live Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special. If you're already an Earthbound fan, then there's obviously a lot for you to enjoy here. If you're among the many who have never checked out the game, or the hugely creative and supportive community that surrounds it, this is the perfect opportunity to find out more about it.

Och Aye The Noo it's Gaming's Greatest Scots Posted: 30 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST If you didn't know, November 30 is St. Andrew's Day in Scotland. He's the patron saint of this fair land (along with Russia and Greece apparently) so with some semblance of national pride, I decided to look throughout the annals of videogaming history to see if there were any standout figures. Sadly, Jamie "Challenge Scot" McGinn didn't make the cut due to me being unable to accept that anything good has ever come from East Kilbride apart from The Jesus And Mary Chain. Whilst there weren't exactly a lot of characters to choose from, I did come up with an interesting list. I decided to forgo the most well known characters from licensed games, meaning there's no Shrek, Fat Bastard (thanks again Mike Myers), Groundskeeper Willie or Scotty from Star Trek. So with that, down your whiskey [Joked to myself I'd change all the Scottish spellings and then he goes and spells 'whisky' like a Yank! - Ed.] and let's get into the list. Read more... |
Curt Schilling: Amalur IP is a 'billion dollar' franchise Posted: 30 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST There's no denying that Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, was a solid action-RPG. It didn't break the mold by any means, but it was bright, colorful, and served up a satisfying blend of action and loot hoarding. And while I enjoyed my time hacking and slashing to my heart's content I never once thought the game was leading the charge for the next billion dollar franchise. Well, in a recent tweet from former head of 38 Studios Curt Schilling, it's clear the thought still crosses his mind -- even in the wake and pending auction of his former studio. "If someone were to buy Amalur, put team back on it, it's a billion dollar franchise, 2 years later and still no ones done what we were doing" I love Schilling's continued passion, but tweets like this makes me wonder if he played much of his game. Sure it was fun, but it practically did what everything else in the genre had done before -- which didn't bode too well for the franchise's upcoming MMO. Then again, the game never saw the light of day, so maybe I should be as optimistic. Read more... |
Life-sized papercraft Mass Effect characters creep me out Posted: 30 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PST Papercraft is cool. Giant, human-sized papercraft, on the other hand, gives me the heebie-jeebies. That said, DeviantArt member Tankball has crafted two eerily realistic papercraft recreations of Mass Effect 3 characters EDI and Jack. More than just paper though, EDI is accentuated with blue LEDs and Jack's model sports authentic human hair. Tankball estimates that EDI, made primarily from cardstock, cost around $150-$200 to complete. For more detailed look at Tankball's builds make sure to check out his Deviant Art profile. Shovel Knight confirmed for release in early 2014 Posted: 29 Nov 2013 11:00 PM PST Shovel Knight will launch early next year, Sean Velasco of Yacht Club Games confirmed to Destructoid. The development team is presently working around the clock as the project approaches its alpha phase. Velasco says the game's various facets are starting to coalesce into a singular product. Even ornaments like stereoscopic effects on Nintendo 3DS sound like they're coming along nicely. Once the title launches later this winter, the stretch goal content will be delivered as free updates a few months after release. Those features include a challenge mode, local multiplayer, boss campaigns, and gender swap mode.
