Prison Architect update improves performance and mods

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 03:00 PM PST

Prison Architect was one of the first games to appear on Steam's Early Access category and I think it's the game that's been best suited for the service. There's been a steady stream of updates since April and Alpha 15 is one of the best so far. There's been a big improvement in the performance of the game, specifically when it's a large map with a lot of prisoners present. I've not created a really big map so far so I can't say I've seen Prison Architect running slowly but this is a welcome update nonetheless in case I fancy running a really big prison.

Some neat additions are that your all your prison staff will now suffer from fatigue, so you'll need to built a staff room so your guards and workers can recharge their batteries. Of course, it's not like I need an excuse to put a pool room in a prison because that's only going to lead to those pool cues being stolen and used a weapons by resourceful prisoners.

Also added is the ability to speed up the game to a crazy speed, new ways to track contraband and new grants to improve your income. The big feature that's been added in Alpha 15 is a new way to support mods making it easier for user created add-ons to be used in game. No more altering text files, just drag and drop the mods into the relevant folder and you're good. I'm glad to see Prison Architect getting better and better; as I've mentioned before, there's a perverse glee to be had in making your prison-less-than secure. There's comedygold in that approach that offsets the dark thoughts that come with running a prison.

Here's your first look at the card-based Space Wolf

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST

After THQ's dissolution, the Warhammer 40K license was scattered to the winds. We've ended up with an apparently disappointing Space Hulk remake and this upcoming Space Wolf game. What's interesting is that this game is going to be a turn-based combat game with a card collecting side too. The fact that it's featuring my favourite Space Marine legion is a definite plus; Space Wolves are like regular Warhammer 40K Space Marines mixed in with a dash of vikings. A winning combination if ever there was one.

Whilst the combat in the trailer doesn't look the most scintillating thing I've ever seen, the idea of a deck-building Warhammer 40K game is appealing. I've been getting into card games recently and the only thing that's stopped me playing more is the lack of a regular human opponent. A version of the game I can put on my phone sounds pretty appealing too but I'll have to wait until Q2 2012 when Space Wolf is due for release.

Publisher cancels Ashes Cricket 2013 after release

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST

It's very rare to see titles on Steam pulled and customers offered a refund, but now we've seen it happen once again. Last week, Ashes Cricket 2013 was released for PC and many fans of the sport jumped at the chance to play it. However, they got more than they bargained for as the game was plagued with glitches and an overall lack of polish.

In a written statement, publisher 505 Games explained what happened with the title and how it plans to rectify the situation for fans. "505 Games announce today the cancellation of Ashes Cricket 2013. The game was released briefly on Friday 22nd November 2013 on digital PC portal, Steam, but has since been removed by 505 Games following negative consumer feedback.

"As most people who have followed the project closely can affirm, the development of Ashes Cricket 2013 has been fraught with challenges almost from the outset. The chosen developer, even with their many years of cricket game development experience, was unable to overcome the unexpected challenges that the chosen game engine threw up, even with multiple extensions to the development schedule. At the start of the project, 505 Games received all assurances from the developer that the engine was up to the task of creating a dynamic, cutting-edge cricket game for the modern age across multiple platforms, and unfortunately those assurances were found to be misplaced."

I know next to nothing about the sport of cricket, but I do know that the players aren't supposed to walk through other people and disappear out of existence. As of now, the title is no longer available on Steam and players who purchased the game will receive a refund. If you're curious with seeing just how bad the game was, then check out the video posted above.

Gazillion Entertainment has, to the joy of some, added X-Men's Gambit to Marvel Heroes' head count. Gambit can be purchased from the in-game store for $17.99 (bloody hell) or for 400 Eternity Splinters.

No brakes racing in GTA Online - Challenge Scot

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 11:00 AM PST

This week's challenge takes place in Grand Theft Auto Online in which I must win a race without braking whilst constantly accelerating. I'd like to think I'm actually pretty decent at driving in GTA V, but one bad corner is going to completely ruin my chances of winning in a race.

If you've got any ideas for future challenges you'd like me to have a go at, feel free to leave them in the comments!

Massage your ears with the latest Game Music Bundle

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 10:30 AM PST

In the Destructoid office we're finalizing our end-of-year awards and one category that I always look forward to is Soundtrack of the Year. Thankfully the sixth Game Music Bundle is here to give me a good reminder about what titles had really good music.

For just $1, you'll get the soundtracks for Braid, Dust: An Elysian Tale, Famaze, Rogue Legacy and Electronic Super Joy. If you feel like splashing out $10, you'll get the soundtracks to titles like Guacamelee!, Kentucky Route Zero, Pivvot, Risk of Rain and The Stanley Parable.

All in all, you'll get 24 albums worth of music for $10 which is an absolute steal. I've been liking the Kentucky Route Zero album a lot and Guacamelee! had some great tunes too. Personally speaking, there's only one glaring omission from the bundle and that's the haunting soundtrack to The Yawhg by Dualryan. It's available on their Bandcamp page though, so pick that up too.

Fallout: New Vegas creative designer joins Killzone team

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST

Fallout: New Vegas' lead creative designer, John Gonzalez, has joined the team behind the Killzone franchise over in Amsterdam.

Back in March of 2011, Gonzalez left Obsidian Entertainment and joined Warner Bros. Games where he worked as lead designer for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, a yet-to-be-released RPG prequel to The Lord of the Rings. According to his LinkedIn profile, Gonzalez left WB Games back in August of this year and had joined Guerrilla a month later.

As for what Gonzalez is developing with Guerrilla, he's written that he's, "Up to something new. Couldn't be more excited."

Here's a look at the Battlefield 4 China Rising DLC maps

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST

On December 3rd, Battlefield 4 will add four new maps to the game as part of the China Rising DLC pack. Ahead of schedule, Redditor Andersso has uncovered overview shots of each mapso you can get a headstart at planning your Conquest strategy now.

These maps are huge, which makes me want an even bigger Battlefield game in the future. 64 players is fairly impressive (especially since most games are pared down to below 20 these days), but maybe we'll get something different next time, especially with two new powerful consoles in the mix.

Impressions: Battlefield 4 (Xbox One and PS4)

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST

Battlefield 4, at launch, was a pretty hectic experience on the PC, but the same can't be said about the watered-down 360 and PS3 versions of the game. Simply put, the maps are built around the concept of huge 64 player battles, and with a paltry 24-player limit, it turned them into ghost towns.

The Xbox One and PS4 editions are attempting full feature parity with the PC game, bringing the count back to a rightful 64, with some enhanced visuals in tow. But the "next-gen" consoles also have some nasty stability issues despite the fact that the experience is upgraded in almost every way possible.

Atlus is free to revive classic Sega brands

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 07:30 AM PST

When Sega purchased Index Holdings along with Atlus back in September, many fans of the niche company were worried about the future of their beloved library of titles. Fast forward to today, it all looks like it's business as usual. Not only were the folks at Atlus pleased to work with the legendary publisher, they've since gone on to announce the long-awaited follow-up to Persona 4. And now, the higher ups at Sega Sammy have the niche developer in mind for looking at their long list of dormant brands.

In an interview with Famitsu, translated by Siliconera, Sega Sammy's director of operations, Naoya Tsurumi, talked about the transitional period and how the developers at Atlus can take advantage of dormant Sega brands. "As a new company, we will venture together, with Index working as an independent company. The plan is to have Atlus and Sega continue shining as brands, while aiming to increase their degree of independence."

"Everything will remain the same. The people of Index will continue working thoroughly, and Sega have no plans to undertake any of their work. However, we’re at a point where Sega is offering Index to freely make use of any resources they may have, that Index does not. Index will be keeping many of their fine qualities, such as Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei IP, and many others.

While we have no intention of forcing this, we’d definitely love to have them utilize any of Sega’s dormant IPs."

The developers at Atlus are known for their quirky, yet dark and clever games -- and it certainly proposes an interesting opportunity for them. I don't know about you guys, but I'm definitely down for a Jet Set Radio revival. And since crossovers are all the rage nowadays, I'd be perfectly fine with a Jet Set Radio X Persona title. They've got the rights to them, it's all about saying yes.

What do you think? What classic Sega brands should the developers at Atlus take advantage of?

3D retro-centric platformer Lobodestroyo adds Wii U goal

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST

It takes a lot for me to get excited about a Kickstarter campaign, and the Lobodestroyo project (which has just added the Wii U to its core list of platforms) has my attention. The game is billed as a "retro action adventure game inspired by N64-era collect-a-thon platformers," and "90s Rare" is also namedropped. One backer reward even includes a faux Nintendo 64 cart with a code for the game.

The creators also have stretch goals for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ports, but the main goal of PC, Mac, Linux, Ouya and Wii U seems much more attainable. All in all this looks like a pretty interesting project despite the rough edges, so I hope we get to see the finished product at some point.

Review: BandFuse: Rock Legends

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST

My family is very musically inclined. My father sings, and my mother sings and plays guitar. My wife's family is also musical; playing piano, guitar, drums, etc. between her, her brother, father, aunt, and so on. When I was about 12, I got an acoustic guitar for my birthday. I didn't start taking lessons for it until I was 17, in high school, once they finally started offering classes.

I'm the mutant of the family. I have no real discernible musical talent. While I do a passable job at singing, I can't really play any instruments. And yet...I own four guitars. Real ones. I also own four plastic guitars for games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. That's how you'll get me to learn and play: make it a game.

BandFuse: Rock Legends was made for people like me. And people like my family. And sometimes, both at the same time.

Watch footage of the PS4 launch event in Rome

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST

For those of you who weren't aware, the PlayStation 4 launched in Europe last night. To celebrate, Sony had a rather lavish launch event in Rome at the beautiful Castel Sant'Angelo, and you can watch a bit of the festivities above.

It's a combination of concerts, light shows, and all around amazing sights, and given the location, it might be the coolest launch party I've ever seen. Europe might get the shaft often when it comes to videogames, but hot damn do you have some amazing real life sights.

Rune Factory studio shuts down, declares bankruptcy

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 05:30 AM PST

Rune Factory developer Neverland has closed its doors, according to a statement on the company's official website.

The studio ceased operations today and announced plans to file for bankruptcy in the near future. Struggling with mounting debt, the company found itself backed into a corner after attempts to secure outside funding were unsuccessful.

Neverland was founded on May 7, 1993. Later that year, the fledgling developer's first effort, Lufia & the Fortress of Doom, landed on the Super Nintendo. Two decades afterwards, Rune Factory 4 arrived on Nintendo 3DS. The studio's swansong is reportedly the most successful entry in the franchise to date.

Though fans can take solace in knowing the series will likely live on under the aegis of publisher Marvelous AQL, our thoughts go out to the members of the development team and their families.

This Forza 5 Wind Waker car is glorious

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST

One of the best parts of Forza games is the deep car customization, and Forza 5 is no exception. Xbox One user Nill31 seems to be of the same mindset, as they created this amazing new Wind Waker themed car adorned in gold and blue, complete with a Triforce symbol on the hood.

IGN has some footage of the car above, which is worth checking out -- this is a creation that should definitely be shared.

Sega launches Virtua Fighter 20th anniversary site

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST

Sega has opened up a new site to celebrate Virtua Fighter's 20th anniversary, and has provided a trailer of the original game's intro to celebrate. You won't find a whole lot there outside of artwork and said video though, as the site is seemingly devoid of content for the time being.

There are plans to celebrate going forward however, as the site's blog post teases more announcements and content. So if you're a fan of the series, stay tuned!

Sony is giving away 10 free PS Mobile games

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST

Sony is giving away 10 specific PS Mobile games in the months of December and January, and the process to redeem them is incredibly easy. All you need to do is log in on a PlayStation Certified smartphone, tablet, or Vita and claim your games.

New games will be announced on the PlayStation Blog, but for now, you can go grab Passing Time and Rymdkapsel. Although the latter has a rather odd name, it's actually one of the most rewarding titles on the iOS and Android marketplace, and I'd highly recommend picking it up.

Club Nintendo EU is selling Peach & Luigi relaxation sets

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST

Club Nintendo has another new item available, and it's a matching "relaxation" set that are themed to Peach and Luigi. Each set comes with an eye mask, blanket, and a case for travel, and it's priced at 6,000 stars. I would totally get the Peach set for my wife if it were available in the US.

Although this is obviously the year of our digital lord and savior Luigi, it's also partially Peach's celebration in my mind, given her playable status in Super Mario 3D World.

Here's some footage of that Lady Gaga Lightning costume

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PST

As you may have already seen, Lightning has a new batshit Lady Gaga-esque Moogle garment in the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns. But that's not the only costume on display, as this new DLC vignette shows off a ton of outfits that Lightning has at her disposal.

It also serves as a decent gameplay video showing off the action oriented combat, including a fight with multiple combatants. Although the sales have dropped off with every FFXIII entry, I'm actually kind of interested to see how this turns out when it hits the US.

As a side note, that aforementioned costume is officially called "The Moogle Queen."

PS Plus December: Free Borderlands 2, Dyad, Sonic Racing

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 12:00 AM PST

Sony has detailed December's PlayStation Plus lineup and there's something for everyone. Well, except PlayStation 4 owners. Barring any hot discounts, it might be a while before early adopters see any benefits outside of Contrast and Resogun, both of which have been free for PS Plus members since the console's launch.

Regardless, here's a list of what North American subscribers will be able to get their mitts on next month:

Not a member of PS Plus? Well then, Sony is running a Black Friday deal today offering one year subscriptions for a mere $29.99. Considering something great arrives on the service just about every week, that just might be the best bang for your buck we see this holiday season.

Persona 4 Arena sequel strikes Japanese arcades

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 11:00 PM PST

Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold hit Japanese arcades yesterday. The fighting game is slated to expand its reach to PlayStation 3 in the country sometime next summer, Atlus announced earlier this week during the Persona 5 reveal event.

In the meantime, the developers have released the game's opening cinematic for your viewing pleasure. The footage imparts a handful of character introductions along with a fleeting glance at the title's story. What a tease! Still no official word on whether there are any plans for an international release at this time.
