MAGFest's 'MAG Prom' and stage 2 line-up announced

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST

MAGFest 12 is slowly inching its way toward us as I turn the pages of my word-a-day calendar (today's word is "gluttony"). Next year's event goes down January 2nd through 5th, and the second stage and MAG Prom line-ups have just been announced!

Here's what's in store:

Thursday - MAGFest Prom (12am - 2am)

  • The OneUps
  • Love Canon

Friday - Stage 2 (11am - 5pm)

  • Chronicles of Sound
  • Viking Guitar
  • Eight Bit Disaster
  • Lucio Baldomero
  • Final Stage
  • Overclocked University
  • Armcannon

Saturday - Stage 2 (11am - 5pm)

  • Droidekka
  • Random Battles
  • MissingNO
  • Dethlehem
  • LonelyRollingStars
  • Triforce Quartet
  • Rare Candy

(You can view the chiptunes and DJ line-up here.) So are you going this year? I've never been myself, but my buddy Conor never stops talking about it. I guess that's why Destructoid is one of MAGFest's favorite communities?

Anyway, let us know in the comments if you'll be in attendance so I can remind Conor of your names after he's had 12 too many beers!

Nintendo reminds us that you can play 3DS during takeoff

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST

In case you haven't heard, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently allowed the use of electronic devices (including portables like the 3DS) during takeoff and landing. Nintendo appears to be having a little fun with the announcement, with a tweet that kindly reminds potential passengers of this fact.

While some people are finally relieved that they can type away on their work laptop uninterrupted, all I'm thinking about is how many more Streetpasses I'm going to get.

Race the Sun is finally heading to Steam

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST

Race the Sun has had quite the interesting launch. After releasing straight from the developer's website, the game's creators ran into a major snag -- they weren't on Steam. Despite the fact that sales numbers weren't quite up to expectations, the devs constantly listened to feedback to improve the quality of the game in the meantime, and even organized a "Not on Steam Sale" to help support other indie devs in the same position.

But it appears as if things are looking up, as Race the Sun is finally coming to Steam on December 9th. It'll be nice to see how the game performs after a wide release, as developer Flippfly has been extremely forthright with sales numbers and the entire process so far.

The Retron5 device is delayed until 2014

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 11:00 AM PST

As a dude who started their gaming career in the late 80s, I'm a huge fan of going back to my roots on a constant basis. I have tons of retro consoles stashed away, ready to be used at a moment's notice. But juggling tons of devices isn't always the most convenient option, which is why "all-in-one" retro consoles can come in handy.

The newest kid on the block is the Retron5 -- a device that boasts the ability to play NES, Famicom, SNES, Genesis, Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. It'll support upscaling via HDMI, and modern conveniences like save states. Although the Retron5 was originally slated for a release in late 2013, it's been delayed due to the discovery of "faulty pins" in some packages.

Manufacturer Hyperkin has apologized for the delay, and will have more news on the exact date soon -- but for now, they're aiming for a first quarter 2014 release.

The Girl and the Robot hits Wii U stretch goal

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST

Despite the fact that it wasn't on my radar until this week, I'm intrigued by the Kickstarter project The Girl and The Robot, which just hit its Wii U stretch goal today. Billed as "Ghibli meets Ico," the game features a story involving a girl who's trapped in a castle, on a quest to escape with the help of a noble robot knight.

You'll be able to switch between the girl and the robot at will, and both characters have unique abilities to help solve puzzle and battle situations. The art is breathtaking to say the least, and although nothing is guaranteed with a Kickstarter campaign, I'm stoked to try out the eventual Wii U version.

Assault Android Catcus gets a new character trailer

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST

Although it may not be high on many gamer's wish lists, Assault Android Catcus is shaping up to be a pretty action packed arcade shoot 'em up. This newest trailer shows off the character Aubergine, as well as some general gameplay featuring some hectic battles.

Platform wise you'll have some options here, as it's coming to the Wii U, PS4 and Vita (Cross-Buy), and the PC. As a reminder, Catcus is currently a part of the early access program on Steam.

Impressions: Kinect Sports Rivals Preseason

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST

It's a crying shame to see Rare reduced to producing Kinect games. With so much talent and so many IPs ripe for the taking, Microsoft has reduced one of the best retro studios of all time to a motion control factory.

But every now and then the "new Rare" will have flashes of greatness, as evident in Viva Piñata. Although Kinect Sports Rivals is far from what I'd call "great," it's a huge step up from the original Kinect Sports, and a vast improvement upon prior motion control technology.

Batman: Arkham Origins is getting story DLC in December

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST

Batman: Arkham Origins is no stranger to DLC, and alongside of the lackluster Season Pass comes the announcement of the first story related add-on. I use the word "story" lightly, as the game is actually a challenge map pack with a narrative built into it. It'll follow Bruce Wayne's trials to become a ninja, while still keeping the challenge arena theme -- so think Batman Begins.

More ancillary DLC has launched today, including the Infinite Earth Skins Pack (with six new costumes for $4.99 on PC, PS3 and 360, and $3.99 on Wii U), the Black Mask Challenge pack ($1.99), and Online Supply Drop #1 ($2.99). Some of this is Season Pass related -- some isn't, so check the listing first before you buy anything.

Towerfall will not have online multiplayer on PS4 & PC

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST

As we all know, the indie hit Towerfall is coming to the PC and PS4 following a six month Ouya exclusivity deal in the form of Towerfall Ascension. But you might want to start organizing some local tournaments, as creator Matt Thorson has revealed that the new version of the game will not have online play.

It will however feature "substantially more" single player content, as well as a full co-op campaign on top of four player PVP. While the lack of online play bums me out in the long run, I can't wait for this re-release to hit the PS4, as I know it'll be a hit with my local gaming group.

As for the Wii U, we have Contra III: The Alien Wars, and temporary sales on the Mario series, including Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario World.

You'll also be able to nab the 3DS Louvre Guide (an official museum tour), My Exotic Farm, Race to the Line, Young Justice: Legacy, Ninja Gaiden III, and Pokemon: BW Rival Destinies (TV show episodes).

Lineage has made $1.8 billion since it launched in 1998

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST

Wow. NCsoft announced that Lineage has made $1.8 billion since it launched 15 years ago in 1998. The medieval fantasy MMORPG is hugely popular in South Korea, with millions of subscribers also spread out in China, Japan, and other markets.

Lineage II meanwhile has been played by more than 14 million users since that came out in 2003.

All in all that's pretty damn impressive.

Nielsen survey highlights most-wanted next-gen games

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST

The results are in for a next-gen gaming survey given to active male and female games in the United States between the ages of 7-54, and according to Nielsen's findings, the most-wanted title of the eighth console generation is Call of Duty: Ghosts. It gets better, thankfully.

To me, the most interesting data was the top five most-wanted exclusives for each console. Those were:

  • PS4: Uncharted (working title), Killzone: Shadow Fall, inFamous: Second Son, DriveClub, and The Order: 1886
  • Xbox One: Halo 5, Dead Rising 3, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Motorsport 5, and Fable Legends
  • Wii U: Super Mario 3D World, Wii Fit U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, and Wii Party U

30 percent of respondents said they definitely planned to buy a PlayStation 4, 22 percent said the same for Xbox One, and the Wii U had interest from 10 percent. Yikes. I'm pulling for Nintendo to come through with the console in a big way.

These custom Tearaway creations are SOOOO CUTE

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST

Tearaway is such a wonderful little game, and it brings in the player like no other. Remember in the snow level when it asks you to draw snowflakes? I made a pink penis instead and the skies were filled with pink penises. It was great!

I don't nearly have enough patience to make anymore more detailed than dick shapes, but others sure have been busy making wonderful little designs of the main playable character.

There's Gordon Freeman, Adventure Time, Attack on Titan, Old Snake, and my personal favorite being the one of Gurren Lagann. So cute!

Looks like there's a Mario and Luigi 3DS XL bundle coming

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 12:00 AM PST

A Target ad has let slip an upcoming Mario & Luigi: Dream Team 3DS XL bundle coming out just in time for Christmas. The bundle will go for $199.99, includes a black and silver colored system with special branding of the hero plumbers, and Dream Team pre-installed.

Previously the themed bundle was revealed by a Walmart employee that found it just waiting in the stock room. Now it looks like this bundle is definitely happening, and will be on sale starting December 2.

It's not the really cool Mario & Luigi: Dream Team 3DS XL Japan got, but still a good bundle.

That mysterious new Guilty Gear character is 'Bedman'

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 11:00 PM PST

Last week, Arc System Works teased a brand new addition to the Guilty Gear series, and that character has been revealed as none other than "Bedman." Not much is known about this mysterious addition, other than the fact that he appears to be laying on a giant robotic bed, and that said machine will accompany him in battle.

A voice actor has already been picked out for the character, and it's none other than Hikaru Midorikawa -- Gundam Wing's Heero Yuy. I'm pretty stoked to try out the new Guilty Gear next year, and this new oddball fighter is only adding to that excitement.

Mario 3D World, Lightning Returns sell poorly in Japan

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 03:30 PM PST

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and Super Mario 3D World launched to lackluster sales in Japan last week. Though the pair placed first and second atop the nation's software charts, the latest entries in Square Enix and Nintendo's flagship franchises saw significantly weaker debuts than their predecessors.

Lightning Returns opened with 277,082 sales, the lowest of any Final Fantasy XIII game. As noted by Gematsu, the original Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.5 million units in its first week on the market, while Final Fantasy XIII-2 hit the 524,000 mark. It's probably a good thing Square Enix is leaving Lightning and friends behind. That progression isn't pretty.

Super Mario 3D World suffered a similar fate, moving just 99,588 copies. That figure makes for the lowest first week sales of any 3D Mario title. Even the Super Mario 64 remake on Nintendo DS sold better with 120,062. Yikes.

The acclaimed platformer also failed to spur Wii U hardware sales, which stood neck and neck with the PlayStation Vita at around 21,000. That's a mere 5,000 unit increase over the previous week, indicating Super Mario 3D World isn't quite the system-seller Nintendo so desperately needs.

That said, Nintendo games tend to have long tails, frequently continuing to chart weeks and even months after launch. Super Mario 3D World could very well go on to see success as a slow burner.
