Hundreds joins the Humble Mobile Bundle 3

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST

The most exciting part of the Humble Mobile Bundle 3 was the debut of Vlambeer's Ridiculous Fishing for Android, which was a nice score for the platform, but that's not to say the rest of the bundle wasn't worth talking about. I mean, come on -- SpellTower!

Three new games and their soundtracks have joined this group for customers who beat the average purchase price and those are the terrific minimalistic puzzle game Hundreds, the acclaimed Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor, and Desert Bus. Yes, really.

I had completely forgotten that last one had made it over to mobile. Funny how those charity drives by LoadingReadyRun have successfully brought this game about literally driving a bus for hours on end into the mainstream.

This image of Skyrim modding made my day

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST

I don't feel it's inherently necessary to explain why this image is worth sharing -- does it not speak for itself? -- and I've already paid my debt with a serious story about the benefits of modding The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, so my conscience is clear.

But, seriously, this thing is great.

I've put more thought into this silly screenshot than just about anything else today. First, for all of the Battletoads trolling that's gone on over the years, I've never tried to visualize what a modern-day title might look like. Yeah, I suppose it would probably look like this mod. The face, especially, is spot on.

And then there's that slightly concerned expression Sven has because, even in a world with dragons, cat people, and magic, this sight is too much to handle. The mods used, the character placement, the framing -- it's brilliant. Add this to the list of stellar Skyrim mod images.

Pay what you want for these videogame books

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 11:00 AM PST

I eagerly picked up the first videogame collection that was offered by StoryBundle, purveyors of pay-what-you want eBook bundles, so I eagerly snapped up the 2.0 bundle. You can pay what you want for six eBooks and magazines and if you pay $10 or more, you'll unlock some extras.

The standard bundle includes Blue Wizard Is About To Die by Seth Barkan, Dreamcast Worlds by Zoya Street, Vaporware by Richard Dansky, The Guide to Classic Graphic Adventures by Kurt Kalata, and issues one through seven of the wonderful Kill Screen magazine.

If you do decide to pay more than $10 you'll get a copy of Replay: A History of Video Games by Tristan Donovan, The Rise of the Videogame Zinesters by Anna Anthropy, and A Slow Year by Ian Bogost which includes a free game. There's some great reads here and it's left me itching to finally get a subscription to Kill Screen magazine.

New Rocksmith 2014 DLC adds Radiohead tracks

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 10:30 AM PST

Ubisoft's released the latest batch of Rocksmith 2014 DLC today and, much like the previous bundle, adds five new tracks to the game's playlist.

This time around the track pack consists of songs from Radiohead. They are:

  • "Creep"
  • "Just"
  • "Optimistic"
  • "Karma Police"
  • "My Iron Lung"

You can either purchase them separately for $2.99 each, or the bundle as a whole for $11.99. Anyone planning on getting any of these songs?

Here are some screenshots and a trailer for Moebius

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST

I've remarked before about how the adventure game genre didn't necessarily need an injection of life but it's no surprise that Kickstarter definitely attracted big names to return to the genre. Moebius is the return to the adventure game genre from Jane Jensen, creator of the Gabriel Knight series. Today we've got a new look at the game in the story trailer above and some new screenshots.

Moebius will tell the story of Malachi Rector (great adventure game name there) and his investigation into a murdered Italian woman. However, nothing is as it seems and Rector's talent of reading objects and understanding their value is put to the test. Whilst the animation and graphics don't exactly look cutting edge, it's the puzzles and story that will be what hook players. We'll know for sure in early 2014 when the game is released on PC, Mac, and Linux with an iPad and Android version to follow shortly after.

Live show: Need For Speed: Rivals

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 09:55 AM PST

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Have you ever wanted to watch somebody bounce into traffic at over one hundred miles per hour? If you said yes, then tonight is the show for you. This evening on Mash Tactics, I'll be continuing my recap of the Xbox One launch titles that I managed to pick up, and will be jumping into some Need For Speed: Rivals. From the little time that I got to play, the game seems really fun, but if you've ever seen me try to play racing games on the live show before, you should know that I get easily distracted, and will more than likely just end up crashing for four hours. Come check it out at Dtoid.TV!

Killzone: Mercenary gets patch so it can get more patches

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 09:30 AM PST

A new patch for Killzone: Mercenary is coming in a few weeks. The patch will reduce the size of the previous patches so more patches can come along and patch the patches with more patches. Patches.

After releasing a pair of rather hefty updates alongside its portable first-person shooter earlier this autumn, Guerrilla Cambridge will provide PlayStation Vita owners with tiny memory cards some reprieve (at least momentarily) with a third update designed to free up around 800MB of space occupied by its predecessors.

Three additional updates will arrive next year, the first of which is scheduled to drop sometime in January with matchmaking and connectivity fixes. A considerably larger one will arrive with two free multiplayer maps and offline Botzone for the Mercenary and Guerilla Warfare modes. The final update includes "continued refinements" and PS Vita TV support. So much for freeing up all that memory card space.

Enjoy the patches!

Today's Battlefield 4 PS4 update addresses crashing

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST

Can DICE fix crashes in Battlefield 4 across all versions of the game before its "We're sorry!" double XP event rolls out on Thursday? While I wish them the best of luck, it's difficult to be optimistic. The studio has put out a new update for PlayStation 4 that should improve stability.

  • Fixed common crashes that could occur when changing weapons or maps
  • Reduced the probability of a corrupted save file in the single player campaign
  • Fixed a crash occurring when resuming the single player campaign
  • Fixed a bug where accessing PlayStation Plus subscription resulted in a connection error
  • Improved performance when shooting at destroyed Levolution objects

If I had dropped several hundred dollars on a new console and this game, I'd be furious right now.

GTA: San Andreas is coming to mobile devices in December

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 08:45 AM PST

The future's pretty cool, eh? I remember going to a friend's house on the release date of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and marveling at the technological prowess of the PlayStation 2 to be able to run such a beautiful and humongous game. Less than ten years later, we'll be able to have that same experience on a machine that sits in your pocket.

Rockstar announced today that it's going to bring Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to mobile devices next month. As if that's not impressive enough, the adaption will feature remastered graphics, along with some other improvements, leading Rockstar to claim this will be the best-looking version yet.

The remake will be available for select iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle, and Windows Mobile devices. Additionally, it will feature full controller support, to include Made for iOS on iOS7.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer talks Xbox One microtransactions

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 08:30 AM PST

In an interview with Kotaku about about the 2014 software lineup for Xbox One, Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer commented about the state of microtransactions on the console. Games like Ryse and Forza 5, which cost full price, have pesky elements of free-to-play gaming.

According to Spencer, Microsoft has systems in place to track consumer behavior. "I want to be able to learn from what we put in," he told the outlet. "So let's make sure we are crafting the game and the analytics so we can see what the consumers -- the gamers -- like and don't -- if you assume buying habits are a reflection of what people like. So that we can craft the experience better for the gamer." Of course, it's often the minority of players that end up making these purchases. Something tells me microtransactions aren't going away.

Asked about where to draw the line, he said "It's easy to say something like, 'I'll never allow somebody to buy the win of the game, I won't let them buy victory,' but that's kind of a trite answer. I'd say, 'Yeah, I guess I have that line, that [we wouldn't have] "Pay five bucks and get 1000 achievements" or something stupid like that.' I'm always pushing against that. But, in reality, that's not what the gamers are looking for. They're usually looking for customization and their gameplay style opening up."

Xbox One reportedly costs approximately $471 to build

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 08:15 AM PST

One of the biggest sticking points of the on-going console war for a lot of people is the $100 price difference between Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One. A lot of speculation chalked the increased cost up to the Xbox One's packaged Kinect peripheral, and (surprise!), that estimation was mostly spot-on.

AllThingsD got a detailed breakdown from research firm IHS of the individual price of the Xbox One's parts. It turns out that Kinect accounts for $75 of the $471 that IHS says it costs Microsoft to build an Xbox One.

However, Kinect isn't the bulk of the expense. The single most expensive piece of hardware inside an Xbox One is the AMD CPU-GPU combination, which is estimated to run approximately $110. This part is $10 more expensive than the chip inside the PlayStation 4.

It was reported last week that the same firm ran equivalent tests on the PS4, and it was found to cost $381 to produce. It's no longer a thinly veiled mystery as to where the Xbox One's increased price point is substantiated.

Ys: Memories of Celceta launches today on PS Vita

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST

Ys: Memories of Celceta arrives on PlayStation Vita today with no memory of how it got there. The action role-playing game offers players a new evil-plagued land to explore alongside the series' trademark hero, Adol Christin, a red-haired amnesiac swordsman with a penchant for adventure.

Initially released in Japan last year, Ys: Memories of Celceta marks the 25th anniversary of Nihon Falcom's acclaimed franchise and XSEED Games is offering a swanky special edition to celebrate the milestone. For an extra twenty clams players can snap up the Silver Anniversary Edition, which includes a cloth map of Celceta, a logo-emblazoned compass, 130 page strategy and art book, and a three disc soundtrack collection featuring original and arranged music from the entire series.

YoYo offers GameMaker Studio Standard Edition for free

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 07:15 AM PST

The newest version of GameMaker Studio has been released to Steam today and brings with it a little something extra for those interested in making their own games. The "Standard Edition" of the software lifts resource restrictions present in the free version, making it a much more functional tool for making games. Normally sold for $49.99, the upgrade will be offered free for a limited time.

Actually getting the upgrade seems to require a bit of effort and patience. To install it, you'll first have to install GameMaker Studio through Steam, then opt in to the beta (by selecting beta from the properties menu within Steam). Upon launching the beta version, you'll be given the opportunity to upgrade for free by submitting an e-mail address to which a license key (and future marketing materials) can be sent.

Right now, it seems like the servers are getting hammered, as I've had no success in getting GameMaker Studio to accept my recently-acquired license key. I'll keep trying, though. I like GameMaker, from what little experience I have with it, and had already planned to upgrade my version when I decided I needed to.

Impressions: Assassin's Creed IV (Xbox One and PS4)

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST

Assassin's Creed IV, point blank, may be the best game in the series outside of AC II. It offers the least amount of real-world trappings for those fans who dislike the sci-fi overarching plot and it features the only true open world in the franchise. It's also a hell of a lot of fun to be a pirate.

While the next-gen versions of Black Flag might not offer up anything new, the good news is that there's nothing wrong with them either.

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST

Earlier this year, we got our first look at DICE+, which promises to combine the physicality and social aspect of board gaming with the wider appeal of tablet-based videogames. With tons of features listed, it appeared to be a pretty slick piece of technology, but limited by its short list of compatible software.

For now, that is still a pretty accurate assessment.

Divekick 75% off in one-day Steam promotion

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 05:45 AM PST

If you have yet to try out Divekick, I heartily recommend you take a trip to Steam today and pick up a copy. Perhaps the simplest fighting game ever made, it's being sold in a one-day promotion for the delightfully low sum of $2.49.

Divekick really gets into your head. Will your opponent jump now? How about now? What if you jump now? So many difficult questions surrounding something as basic as one maneuver, this is as much a psychological game as one of timing and a fascinating look at the power of a singular move. You should go check it out, but hurry. The sale is only good for today.

That 19-year-old Skyrim modder landed a dream job

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 05:30 AM PST

Alexander Velicky's massive Falskaar mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim impressed us back in July. What got me the most was that a large part of his motivation for this mod was to get a job at Bethesda. While that hasn't happened, he's accepted an associate designer position at Bungie, which is an equally inspiring outcome.

In a forum post thanking the community that supported him, Velicky writes words of encouragement for anyone looking to follow in these footsteps. "Never be afraid to try. I set my sights on a professional design job pretty early, I lowered my head, charged forward, and rarely looked back. Of course, I ensured what I was doing had a reasonable chance for success from time to time. But the most surprising of all, is who I've ended up with.

"I applied to many companies, and Bungie was in my, 'Huge company that will completely ignore me.' category. Well, they didn't and look what it got me. Bungie is an awesome company with an amazing team, and I'm very lucky that they've decided to give me a chance! Never be afraid to try. I spent the time it took to apply and the rewards are proving to be greater than I could have possible imagined."

Velicky is unsure if he'll continue modding given the new job, but he'd like to. There's an interest in picking up Falskaar again, putting out tutorials, and working on Fallout 4 mods once that game inevitably gets released. The possibilities for self-teaching online never cease to amaze me.

Mutant Mudds Deluxe is still solid on Steam

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST

Mutant Mudds Deluxe is out this week on Steam, which marks the first time the newly enhanced version is available outside of the Wii U. As a pure platformer through and through, the extra levels and increased difficulty help address a few issues that some of you may have had with the original.

It also packs in the Granny level content, which is highly recommended just on its own. While I wouldn't trade the Wii U GamePad functionality for a PC port, you really can't go wrong with the Steam version if you haven't played it yet. I haven't encountered any issues so far, and despite the fact that I completed the game a few months back, I'm already eager to go for another 100% run.

If you bought the original Steam edition from Renegade Kid's shop, you should be getting a Deluxe key. Select Desura users should be getting keys as well.

Here are Xbox Live's Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 04:45 AM PST

Major Nelson has the full list of Xbox Live deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday over here, but if it's simply the highlights you're looking for, look no further. Now through December 2, there's Skyrim, Dragonborn, and Dawnguard for half price; The Cave for $3.74; Tomb Raider for $14.99; and Mark of the Ninja for $5.09.

On Black Friday only, Rayman Legends will be half price, Diablo III will be 33 percent off, and Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will be 66 percent off. Lastly, during Cyber Monday, there's Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Red Dead Redemption, The Witcher 2, Dark Souls, and L.A. Noire for 75 percent off, plus BattleBlock Theater (67 percent off) and Rayman Origins (50 percent off).

You probably know how you feel about most of these games already, so I'll just say give BattleBlock a chance if you like co-op platformers. It's one of the best of those in years.

Double Fine regains rights to Costume Quest and Stacking

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 04:30 AM PST

In a recent press release from the San Francisco developer Double Fine, we have learned that the recent owners of the titles Costume Quest and Stacking, Nordic Games, have handed the rights back to the creators. Previously owned by the now-defunct THQ, the publishing rights are now owned by the developers, and now they plan to re-release both games at retail for Windows and Mac, in addition to Psychonauts, sometime in 2014.

"I am pleased that we have regained full control over Costume Quest and Stacking, following a daring and top-secret midnight raid on the Nordic Games headquarters in Vienna," said Double Fine president and CEO Tim Schafer. "We can't wait to partner with Double Fine for this upcoming retail launch of three of its most excellent games," said Lars Wingefors, owner and CEO of Nordic Games. "However, I feel compelled to point out that we were happy to transfer distribution rights for Costume Quest and Stacking back to Double Fine in an entirely non-secretive and heist-free manner."

Nordic Games previously acquired the distribution rights to Stacking and Costume Quest upon the bankruptcy of former publisher THQ in early 2013.

"Double Fine is dedicated to controlling its own IP, and we will continue working to bring all associated rights back in-house whenever possible," said Double Fine business development VP Justin Bailey, "no matter how many split-second security system hacks or painstaking tunneling operations we have to execute."

"I just want to clarify, again, that we support the right of independent developers to control their own distribution, and we were pleased to have the opportunity to work with Double Fine," said Klemens Kreuzer, managing director at Nordic Games. "No heists."

Review: Soulcalibur II HD Online

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST

Transcending more than just history, Soulcalibur II was the envy of every arcade-to-home conversion back in 2003. A feature-rich fighter, Namco’s weapon-based brawler exemplified perfection with deep mechanics, memorable characters, stunning visuals, and robust modes.

Additionally, its console iterations included console specific guest characters: The Legend of Zelda’s Link on GameCube; comic book icon Spawn on Xbox; and from Namco’s other 3D fighter Tekken, Heihachi Mishima on the PS2. It was unprecedented at the time, so much so that it caused quite a commotion amongst fanboys as they clamored which system had it best.

But how do you improve a game that already borders on perfection? Is it even humanly possible? Can the jump to HD and the inclusion of online instill the same passion in fans that fueled Soulcalibur II all those years ago? To me, these are the questions Namco and the team at Project Soul were faced with when they announced Soulcalibur II HD Online for XBLA and PSN earlier this year -- an update to a game that set the gold standard for the series.

Well, the short answer…a half-hearted “kind of.”

For science! Boson X is available on Android now

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 03:15 AM PST

Most of the people I interact with who are into mobile gaming are on iOS, so as an Android user I frequently hear about cool games that I cannot play. Boson X used to fall into that category, as a title that has been available on Apple devices for a couple of months now. Today, that changes. Developer Mu and Heyo announced this morning that its loosely science-themed runner is available on Android.

It plays a bit like Super Hexagon, where twitch reflexes and foresight are the keys to success. The running scientist is controlled by either tapping or holding left or right, depending on whether the player wants to just move or to jump. Despite its simple setup, Boson X looks like it can be quite challenging in the later levels.

Club Nintendo has sold out of the new Zelda posters

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST

Last week, Nintendo put up a set of shiny new posters for Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, coming in at 500 Coins. But it appears as if they've promptly sold out not even a week after the game's release.

Why bother telling you this if you can't get it? Because if you do want it at some point, I would bookmark the page and check back weekly. Nintendo oftentimes gets new shipments in periodically, so it would be in your best interest to order it if they restock.

More than 100 Southwest Airlines flyers will get a Wii U

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 02:45 AM PST

I have a few flights to take over the holidays, but none of the airlines I'm using will have Mario handing me a free Wii U. No fair. My Wii U's disc drive isn't working.

As you can see in the above image, Mario has a holiday surprise for more than 100 Southwest Airlines customers. He's at Dallas Love Field this morning to greet flyers with what looks like a nice holiday gift: a Wii U.

For my flight this week, I'm sure the only one that will be waiting for me is the grumpy lady with the coffee breath that asks if I have a tag on my carry-on luggage.

Yu Suzuki to deliver a Shenmue postmortem at GDC 2014

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 02:15 AM PST

Game creator and videogame legend Yu Suzuki will deliver a postmortem on Shenmue at GDC 2014. GDC says that he'll be talking for the very first time about this classic game, starting from its origins as a Virtua Fighter-based RPG on the Saturn to its release in 1999.

What's crazy is that PS4 lead system architect and game designer Mark Cerny will be translating Suzuki's presentation. What.

I expect standing room only at this presentation. I'll be the first dork in line. I'm a massive Suzuki fan, as well as one of the freaks that thinks about Shenmue daily, even now.

And for those that can't be there, GDC says that the session will be live streamed on GameSpot.

To celebrate, I'd like to share two of my Shenmue music remixes. The one above is my take on the Tomato Convenience Store Theme. I took some liberties on that one, adding background vocals and my own lyrics. The one below is my cover of the Bob's Pizza theme, also with some background vocals.

Defective Xbox One owners get a free game while they wait

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST

Remember those select people who brought home their shiny new Xbox Ones, only to find out that their consoles made crunching noises and don't read discs? I'd be pissed if it happened to me, but it appears as if Microsoft is making amends for those who are affected.

According to Polygon, not only is Microsoft offering to replace the console, but they're also offering up a free digital game, with the choice of Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome or Zoo Tycoon. Since this hardware failure only messes with the disc drive, people can play these digital games without delay. So if this is happening to you, check or email or file a report as soon as possible.

If I may make a suggestion -- go for Dead Rising 3, unless you really like racing games, in which case go for Forza.

There are approximately 8,000 Xbox One listings on eBay (7,925, to be exact) right now. We were sent word this morning that nearly 7,000 Xbox One consoles sold on eBay over the launch weekend, and that more than 12,000 of them have ben sold on eBay since November 1.

eBay says that they are "a great place for shoppers to get their hands on the new consoles this holiday" as they are sold out everywhere else.

BUT! The prices for completed auctions of an Xbox One system are hovering around the $650 to $700 mark. That's one hell of a markup.

If you want a PS4, over 9,000 (go ahead, say it!) systems are available on eBay right now. They're regularly selling at $550 to $600 today.

Have any of you bought a next-gen system from eBay? Or have you sold one on eBay?

Pikmin director developing new IP for Nintendo

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PST

Masamichi Abe, the director on Pikmin and Pikmin 2, is developing a new intellectual property for Nintendo, according to Namco Bandai's Katsuhiro Harada.

Abe is presently working at the company's headquarters in Kyoto, Harada revealed on Twitter in response to a fan inquiry as to whether the Pikmin and Tekken designer had retired from the business. However, Harada didn't go so far as to blow the lid off what the new project might entail.

Prior to Abe's current undertaking, he left Japan for Nintendo Software Technology in Redmond, Washington, where he helmed Metroid Prime: Hunters and worked on other Nintendo DS titles, such as Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again.

First Steam Machine from iBuyPower will be $499

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 12:30 AM PST

iBuyPower showed off a prototype for its first Steam Machine, which will be out next year for $499. The sexy white box will have a multicore AMD CPU, an AMD Radeon R9 270 graphics card, a 500GB hard drive, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SteamOS, and a Steam Controller.

Don't run at me with torches ablaze, but it looks like this early Steam Machine will outperform the new consoles, at least from a raw power perspective. TFLOPS is a way to calculate how fast a computer is, and according to Anandtech the PlayStation 4 has 1.84 TFLOPS, the Xbox One has 1.23 TFLOPS, and The Tech Report has the R9 270, a $180 GPU, at 2.4 TFLOPS. With similar AMD multicore CPUs, the edge will go to the system with the better graphic processing and speed.

This is a lower price with better hardware than most people were expecting. Valve's own prototypes are all above this price point, so it's nice to see that the first third-party system will be very affordable. We'll learn more about the hardware of this box, and other Steam Machines, at CES in January.

SMITE is set for a March 2014 release date

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 11:30 PM PST

I know some of you have been enjoying SMITE for quite some time now, but it's been in open beta for over a year. Finally, Hi-Rez Studios has set a release date -- March 25, 2014. Hi-Rez will have a $100,000 tournament in Atlanta to celebrate, the participants of which will be based on events that start in January.

Currently, SMITE is sitting at 2.5 million registered users, which isn't bad for a MOBA not named Dota 2 or League of Legends. Let's hope that Hi-Rez actually supports this game after the first year.

Review: Borderlands 2: Ravenous Wattle Gobbler

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 11:00 PM PST

Last month, the first Headhunter DLC pack for Borderlands 2 released, celebrating Halloween with T.K. Baha's Bloody Harvest. The Headhunter series aims to be quick and inexpensive, offering a couple of holiday-themed missions for just a few dollars apiece.

Next in the series is the Thanksgiving flavored content, with a title as stuffed as our stomachs will be in two days: The Horrible Hunger of the Ravenous Wattle Gobbler. While it follows the same general format as the previous entry, Wattle Gobbler has a bit more of the signature Borderlands charm, which benefits it in the end.
