| Atlus summoning second Persona 3 film in summer 2014 Posted: 25 Nov 2013 03:00 PM PST The follow-up to Persona 3 the Movie #1: Spring of Birth will release in Japan next summer, Cinema Today reports. The announcement was made at a special event for the first film, which debuted in Japanese theaters last Saturday. The next day Atlus unveiled a trio of upcoming titles: Persona 5, Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, and Persona 4: Dancing All Night. Details regarding any potential plans to release the animated film series or new projects in the West have yet to be revealed. 人気声優・石田彰、豊口めぐみ、能登麻美子がそろい踏み!劇場版『ペルソナ3』の見どころを語る [Cinema Today via Siliconera] |
| Amazon has the BioShock Triple Pack on PC for $15 Posted: 25 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST As part of its Black Friday deals week, Amazon has five noteworthy discounts on digitally-distributed PC games, including BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite bundled together for $15. It was not long ago that I was thrilled to pay nearly double that amount for just the latter title. The other deals are Borderlands Game of the Year and Borderlands 2 ($11.99); Civilization V and the Brave New World expansion ($19.99); Max Payne 3 with its DLC season Pass ($6.99); and Bully, Manhunt, Manhunt 2, and Midnight Club 2 ($7.99). With the exception of Manhunt 2, these games are redeemable on Steam. These offers are valid through December 2 at 11:59pm Pacific, in case you want to hold out for a better deal, you utter maniac you. |
| EVE Valkyrie will connect with the EVE Universe Posted: 25 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST EVE Valkyrie was a surprise hit at the EVE Fanfest earlier this year, so much so that there were calls to turn what was essentially a tech demo into a full game. Chief managing office at CCP Dave Reid has spoken to Digital Spy, confirming that Valkyrie will start off small but they have "grand visions" for the game. "Now there's going to be complexity, and I won't promise [that] you'll see that in 2014 when we launch, but that is ultimately the long-term vision," Dave explains. I'm sure part of the hesitancy in making any promises lies with the Oculus Rift hardware and how well it's adopted; no point in ploughing months of dev time into a game seemingly so dependent on hardware if said hardware fails to sell. Reid sums up this sentiment pretty well: "...making this a game requires us to not just have a hot tech demo that just works for a few minutes, but actually gives the full robust capability that a gamer comes to expect when they're playing a game." Still, even without Oculus Rift support, I'd still like to play Valkyrie if only for the current dearth of space combat sims. | First look at multiplayer PS4 title Basement Crawl Posted: 25 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST The teaser trailer for Basement Crawl was unsettling, to put it mildly. And I'm none too pleased that I had to watch it a second time to refresh my memory. It was unclear how this story-centric video would apply to the gameplay itself, which is a competitive multiplayer experience not unlike Bomberman, but with traps and creepy clowns. As we can now see in these first screenshots, the world of Basement Crawl and what you'll be doing in said world are two very different things. Now, I'm not going to be too quick to judge based on still images alone, but I'm not feeling this. Bloober Team expects to have the game out on PlayStation 4 this year, which should mean footage isn't far away. We'll see. |
| Sacrifice storage space for Soul Sacrifice on PS Plus Posted: 25 Nov 2013 11:00 AM PST Once the North American PlayStation Plus update rolls out tomorrow, subscribers will be able to nab Soul Sacrifice for PlayStation Vita at no additional charge. This was one of the bigger exclusives for the platform this year so it's nice to see it already end up in the Instant Game Collection. I'd imagine a fair number of you picked up the handheld after Soul Sacrifice launched and haven't gotten around to trying it yet. Well, here you go. The Dynasty Warriors series is one I've long wanted to try out -- but never at anything remotely resembling full price. The timing for steep-enough discounts and my desire to take a chance on new experiences -- which fluctuates wildly -- has never worked out. Are DW6 or DW7 worth getting at $11.99 and $19.99, respectively, with a PS Plus membership? PS Plus: Soul Sacrifice Free for Members [PlayStation Blog] |
| Surprising no one, Star Citizen raises $30 million Posted: 25 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST Got the weirdest case of deja vu... I had this feeling I was reporting on how the ambitious space sim title Star Citizen had broken another benchmark for crowd funding. A few weeks ago we mentioned how eager fans had already pledged $27 million to Chris Roberts' new project; now we've learned that Star Citizen has broken the $30 million mark. Now that funding has broken the latest goal, the reward for players will be an Origin 890 Jump, described as "an interstellar yacht" which makes my mind think of one of those massive ships you see Russian oligarchs lollygagging around on, with a hot tub and things like that. Only in space. Which is way cooler. Now the vote is on to see what kind of ship fans want to see once Star Citizen hits $32 million mark and let's face it, that is likely considering the money train doesn't seem to want to stop anytime soon (when I last checked, the current funding total was just shy of $31 million). One topic that's come up in the virtual Destructoid office is "Who keeps pledging money to this game?" I haven't myself due to a combination of restraint and a lack of disposable income. I'm really keen to play Star Citizen and see it developed into a full game but surely that guaranteed to happen now, right? |

We've lowered the price down, saving you a couple of bucks. Sure, $2 isn't much, but those $2 can now be spent on a whole bunch of other things. Like cheap Jack in the Box tacos. Or a soda. You can eat tacos and drink soda and as these foods cover your naked torso, you can use one of our t-shirts to cover up your horrible mess without having to take a shower and continue looking hot. Right? Meanwhile, our hoodies are still $34.95, and we're still offering free worldwide shipping for any orders over $60. Oh, and there's one new hoodie that's going for $24.95. Can you find it? | Don't use 'excessive profanity' in Xbox One Upload Studio Posted: 25 Nov 2013 08:45 AM PST There have been rumblings that swearing in Skype calls on Xbox One can result in the loss of Xbox Live account privileges, but it's actually the Upload Studio you need to be careful with. You may have seen this image that's been making the rounds. Funny grammatical errors aside, yes, swearing too much in videos recorded using Upload Studio can get you in trouble. A Microsoft representative gave a statement to TechCrunch, which reads: "To be clear, the Xbox Live Policy & Enforcement team does not monitor direct peer-to-peer communications like Skype chats and calls. Also, we take Code of Conduct moderation via Upload Studio very seriously. We want a clean, safe and fun environment for all users. Excessive profanity as well as other Code of Conduct violations will be enforced upon and result in suspension of some or all privileges on Xbox Live. We remain committed to preserving and promoting a safe, secure and enjoyable experience for all of our Xbox Live members." Naturally, concerns have been raised about why swearing is such a big deal for footage of games which feature graphic depictions of violence and profanity, and I tend to agree. Surely there is a better solution here than a flat-out ban on harsh language. Microsoft Confirms That "Excessive Profanity" In Xbox Upload Studio Videos Can Cost You Account Privileges [TechCrunch] |
| Twitch cracking down on PS4 living room broadcasts Posted: 25 Nov 2013 08:30 AM PST The PlayStation 4 brought with it an unprecedented ease of streaming with the DualShock 4's share button, and when a massive wave of new users is mixed with ease-of-use there's a whole slew of new problems to watch out for. PS4 players have become creative and figured out that Playroom is currently the only way to broadcast a fullscreen camera through the console's streaming scrape. The main issue that has cropped up is users have been streaming an array of sexual content that definitely breaks Twitch's Terms of Service, and obviously causing them to ban said offenders as soon as these streams pop up. But other users have also taken to creating various living room shows through Playroom that -- sometimes have nothing to do with gaming at all -- are unfortunately against their terms. Shows that are about gaming (including the charming husband and wife duo call-in show The Spartan Show) are within Twitch's Terms of Service. Twitch tweeted they "continue to moderate according to our Terms of Service. Non-gaming content is not allowed," and "If using PS4 Playroom, the content must be about games or gaming and within our ToS. Thanks for understanding." | Destructoid Holiday Gift Guide 2013: The Games Posted: 25 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST Like it or not, Christmas is happening yet again. I know you've yet to sit through fraught Thanksgiving dinners, but I'm here to remind you in advance and offer you a primer for planning your consumerist immolation. This list is just games. Hardware, accessories, and miscellany are coming up throughout the day. Merry Christmas, you filthy animal. |
| Raven's Cry sets sail for piratey adventure May 2014 Posted: 25 Nov 2013 07:45 AM PST TopWare Interactive has finally set a date for its pirate-themed RPG Raven's Cry, which will be made available on May 7, 2014. I want this to be very good, because I like it when role-playing games don't conform to a high-fantasy model and I'm starting to get an itch to immerse myself in another large game. And while Assassin's Creed IV featured elements of the romantic age of piracy, that series is encumbered by other setting material which distracts a bit, so there's still a huge gap waiting to be filled in the pirate game landscape. My hope is that developer Reality Pump Studios can "pump" out another title on the level of Two Worlds II. As long as they can meet that bar, I'll be happy. | Check out the new inFamous screens with neon powers! Posted: 25 Nov 2013 07:30 AM PST We're seeing a ton of inFamous: Second Son media lately. After the release of the recent trailer, the floodgates have opened, so to speak. And now, the Facebook page for the game has released a set pictures showing off the new neon powers and locales. Of course, the new powers look stunning, but the real stand out here is the visuals on Delsin's beanie. I mean you can see the individual ridges of the cap. Let me tell you, I'm quite the beanie connoisseur, and my friends, this title shows how you properly translate a beanie into a videogame. Well done, Sucker Punch. But of course, if you don't like hats, then check out the new action with the neon powers. They look pretty slick. |
| Game of the Year voting's begun, here are our categories Posted: 25 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST Destructoid has begun internal voting on all of our end of the year awards for 2013. On top of Game of the Year, we have a total of 21 categories this year. Nominations will be revealed the week of December 16, and winners will be announced on December 23. This time around there will be ten nominees in each category as opposed to just five as in years past. More importantly, each of our categories will have a community voting section so every one of you can have a chance to have your voice heard. Community choice winners will be revealed right alongside the main award reveals throughout the day on December 23. Lastly, next week you can expect a giant list of all the major 2013 releases that you can vote against too, plus a series of articles where we ask you to tell us your favorite various moments from the releases of the year. We heard what you had to say about our awards process last year, and we want you as involved as possible with what you're doing this time around. And hey, let's start the fun early by telling us what your favorite games were that came out in 2013. |
| Posted: 25 Nov 2013 06:45 AM PST As much as online user reviews can be hit or miss, I particularly like the way they're being implemented on Steam. Most importantly, before you can write a review, you must have first launched that game from Steam -- and your playtime will be shown next to your evaluation. Don't get me wrong, I'm still expecting a bunch of garbage, but if I can find value in community guides, there's hope that user reviews will be beneficial as well. This system, currently in beta, is taking over Steam's user recommendations which can now be made visible to the public by going to your Reviews page should you have written any before. While Valve is considering creating an overall score based on player ratings, that's not yet in place. That might be for the best. |
| Child's Play has raised over $20M in ten years Posted: 25 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST On its 10th anniversary, the gaming-focused charity Child's Play announced it had raised over $20 million dollars during its ten years of drives and events. To celebrate, the organizers of the charity wrote a passionate post on the official site while looking forward to the future. "Ten years ago today, gamers worldwide were called upon to brighten the holidays for sick kids at Seattle Children’s Hospital. The response then was phenomenal, and since that point gamers worldwide have shown their generosity year after year. Since our inception, the gaming community has now raised over $20 million -- $2.5 million in 2013 alone." Child's Play has grown to over 90 facilities worldwide, such as hospitals and domestic violence shelters, and continues to expand every year. Though they're still a bit short of their $3 million dollar goal for 2013, the charity continues to find support from gamers around the world. For more information about Child's Play, head on over to the official site to learn about the history of the charity and any upcoming events, such as the Child's Play 2013 Auction Dinner, which is set for Dec. 5th. 10 Years of Gamers Giving Back [Child's Play] |
| Your first look at the new Wreckage map for Hawken Posted: 25 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST Adhesive Games has given Destructoid the first exclusive look at the latest map coming to Hawken. Called Wreckage, the new map is based around a crash-landed derelict cargo ship. Wreckage ties into the backstory of the series, and it ultimately shows off a microcosm of the battles being fought within the Hawken universe. The cargo ship on the map is the center of attention with the factions of Hawken, as it contains enough parts to make hundreds of mechs, or alternatively repair thousands of them. The above picture was illustrated by Adhesive CEO Khang Le. Below you can find some in-game shots showing off the level and the carnage you can expect. |
| Activision states it still owns the Crash Bandicoot IP Posted: 25 Nov 2013 05:45 AM PST Any Crash Bandicoot fans getting excited over rumors of the orange ex-Sony mascot returning to the house of PlayStation for a much-needed reboot may have raised their hopes in vain. Rumors sparked early last week after an alleged screenshot of an Amazon France listing of a new Crash Bandicoot surfaced (believed to be a hoax), and peaked late last week when reddit user cocobandicoot found that Activision removed all mentions of Crash from its sites, including shutting down the official website for the series. It appears Activision is gearing up to do something with the franchise that doesn't include returning Mr. Bandicoot back to Sony, as a representative stated to Game Informer later that day that "Activision owns Crash Bandicoot and we continue to explore ways in which we could bring the beloved series back to life." If I was to reach way out there, I'd speculate that maybe Activision definitely still owns Crash, but that the publisher is licensing it back to Sony so it can develop a reboot. Too far-fetched? | How the Saints Save Christmas is the next Saints Row DLC Posted: 25 Nov 2013 05:30 AM PST Above all else, I dig the spot-on name for Saints Row IV's upcoming DLC. How the Saints Save Christmas promises to be "a holiday classic for the whole family" (riiight) when it arrives on December 11 for $6.99, or as a free download for season pass holders. Santa is in the simulation with the Third Street Saints, and is that Sam the Snowman I see? Perfect. Volition and Deep Silver have a pair of promotional events happening right now that might overshadow the actual DLC. The first is a submission form where fans can suggest ideas for how the naughty staff at Volition can get back on to Santa's nice list, and they'll perform these suggestions on camera. I'm afraid to think of what the internet at large will come up with. There's also a sing-a-long contest that I'm hoping some of you will participate in. Do us proud! |
| Review: Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon (3DS) Posted: 25 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST I remember my first episode of Adventure Time. It randomly came on the TV one day and I had no idea what it was -- but I couldn't stop watching. There was something about the show that kept my eyes glued to the screen, watching best pals Finn and Jake battle the "evil" Ice King to save princesses from all across the Land of Ooo. Years later and I've seen every episode of the show, and I still can't predict what will happen on any given week, or what new endearing character I might meet. To me, that's the mark of something special. Sadly, the new Adventure Time 3DS game is the opposite of everything the show stands for. |
| The Typing of the Dead: Overkill DLC goes Shakespeare Posted: 25 Nov 2013 04:45 AM PST I was over the moon when The Typing of the Dead: Overkill was released, as I totally loved the original Typing of the Dead in concept and play. But maybe the text offerings were a little too vulgar for you and you'd appreciate the game being classed up a bit. To serve you, a new DLC pack filled with floral phrases from William Shakespeare has been added to the Steam store for $2.99. If anything could make a game where you type phrases to kill oncoming zombies stranger, it would be this. Way to class it up, SEGA! The Typing of The Dead: Overkill - Shakespeare DLC [Steam] |
| Assassin's Creed Pirates drops in December Posted: 25 Nov 2013 04:30 AM PST Ubisoft has announced today that Assassin's Creed Pirates -- a mobile spin-off of Assassin's Creed IV -- will head to iOS and Android on December 5, 2013. It'll run you $5, and it features naval combat as well as exploration elements. Instead of commanding the Jackdaw this time around you'll play as Alonzo Batilla, a young captain in charge of a small crew. You'll be able to upgrade your ship as well as manage your crew members, and there will be a few crossover characters from the core game. It sounds pretty underwhelming honestly, but maybe it'll be a nice diversion. |
| Garry's Mod has sold over 3.5M copies since release Posted: 25 Nov 2013 04:15 AM PST Garry's Mod, otherwise known as GMod, has been a long-time fixture of the Steam and PC gaming community. In it, player's can take existing character models, objects, and environments, and experiment with them in a variety of unique ways. It's very much like playing with a collection of action figures from different brands, and it's been quite popular with humorists and fans. Last week, Garry Newman, the creator of the mod, posted a sales chart showing the progress his title has made. During an online exchange with Rock Paper Shotgun, the creator talks about the success of the mod, why it has responded so well to the community, and how it keeps on selling. Obviously, much of the credit goes to Steam, Valve's self-developed games, and social media and video sites. Steam began selling the retail version of Gmod in 2006, and the popularity of it expanded along with the community that shares media of their latest creations. Surprisingly, one big influence over the years was Minecraft, which Newman claims helped Garry's Mod tremendously. "Minecraft. You’d think Minecraft would kill GMod’s popularity... but it’s kind of the opposite. People play Minecraft to death -- they love it... so they go out looking for other games that are a bit like it. Minecraft has attracted a lot of people that aren’t really PC gamers too. They play the game on the 360 or the iPad and everyone tells them that the PC version is better." It's seems like the only direction for Garry's Mod is up, though Newman has no plans to recreate the success of this title. His development studio, Facepunch, is currently working on Rust, an open-world survival game. While a departure from his previous work, he will continue to support and update GMod when needed. What are your favorite creations to come out of Garry's Mod? Garry On Garry’s Mod’s Endlessly Rising Sales Figures [Rock Paper Shotgun] |
| A handy list of Xbox One Kinect voice commands Posted: 25 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST I could never keep the Kinect voice commands straight on Xbox 360 despite only ever knowing a few of them, and I'm not confident that I'll do much better with the new device for Xbox One. Something like this list would've helped considerably. It's a guide straight from Microsoft that covers system shortcuts, TV, navigation, multitasking, and more. If Kinect isn't going to pick up on commands, I'd much prefer it be because the technology has limitations rather than me flat out saying the wrong phrase. Never again. |
| This Assassin's Creed IV glitch is totally next-gen Posted: 25 Nov 2013 03:45 AM PST Before you watch this video, know that you're more or less obligated to enjoy it. A lot of good men died for this glitch. If you can't squeeze a paltry morsel of pleasure out of it, then they died in vain, and you're a monster. A monster that deserves to be banished to the depths of wherever the hell the Jackdaw just came from. |
| Apple definitely bought the original Kinect company Posted: 25 Nov 2013 03:30 AM PST Apple confirmed that they bought PrimeSense, the company behind the original Kinect, for $360 million dollars. A spokesmen told the BBC that "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Apple wants to make some type of wired camera that watches you while you watch television. It makes sense for Apple to try to make a move into the living room, and to compete with the Xbox One's advanced Kinect technology. I can picture Apple TV using a Kinect like device for browsing television, and Siri could easily become a part of our living rooms. "Siri, watch sports!" Apple confirms acquisition of Kinect maker PrimeSense [BBC News via GamesIndustry International] |
| EA says there won't be any more FIFA Manager games Posted: 25 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST Gerald Köhler, the founder and designer of FIFA Manager, sent out an open letter this weekend stating that FIFA Manager 14 would be the last one in the series. He said that "one game has practically dominated the market" of the already niche genre. While he didn't say what game was domination the management sim genre, it's clear he meant Football Manager 14, which has 62,033 people playing it on Steam at this very moment. Basically, it would be too expensive to bring FIFA Manager to the next-generation, and EA is giving up any hope of outselling Football Manager. Good job EA! If you can't be the best at something, just give up. |
| LEGO Hobbit confirmed for Spring 2014 Posted: 25 Nov 2013 02:30 AM PST It looks like the rumors are true -- Warner Bros. has officially a confirmed LEGO version of The Hobbit, set for a Spring 2014 release. It'll hit the Xbox One, 360, PS4, PS3, Vita, the Wii U, 3DS, and PC/Mac platforms. In other words, it's a typical LEGO release that will most likely be ported to your refrigerator at some point. Since the second film in the new Jackson trilogy is set for December, the new game will only include story up to that point -- so I guess a sequel is in order to finish out the narrative. | MemLeak tactically infiltrates my radar Posted: 25 Nov 2013 02:15 AM PST When games have an option for stealth, I will often go that route in lieu of the "blow everything up" method. When games focus on stealth, as with Mark of the Ninja, Gunpoint, or the upcoming Paradise Lost: First Contact, then I take notice. There is something about sneaking past enemies unawares that is more satisfying in some ways than murdering them. MemLeak looks to be another interesting stealth game, with the twists that it is not as much stealth action as it is stealth strategy, and that players control a squad rather than a single character. Set in a futuristic world, gameplay looks to switch between cyber-infiltration and real life infiltration, though either appear to function on the same basic mechanics. Get in, get the stuff, and get out undetected. That, or get shot on sight. |
| Nintendo's Black Friday deals to make your wallet un-fat Posted: 25 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST Nintendo has some Thanksgiving deals put together for this weekend. Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, said it best: "And if there is ever a question of why shoppers should choose Wii U and Nintendo 3DS this holiday season, the answer is simple: Because it’s Nintendo." I liked that more than the press release joke that talked about tryptophan and trip-to-fun. Yeesh!
Finally, lots of sales on games will hit the Wii U and 3DS eShop this month. Go buy it all. Because it's Nintendo. |
| EA's PS4 games are £8 more on the UK PlayStation Store Posted: 25 Nov 2013 01:30 AM PST It looks like folks over in the UK could be paying more than the normal price for EA's PlayStation 4 games. Eurogamer posted a list of the prices for EA's PlayStation 4 games, and they were £8 then the prices for the same titles on the Xbox One. For example, Need for Speed: Rivals is £62.99, FIFA 14 is £62.99, and Assassin's Creed IV is £57.99. So for all of our American readers, that puts EA's next-gen titles around $102, which is completely insane. Eurogamer also pointed out that other companies are charging more for the PlayStation 4 versions, like Ubisoft. These prices are being set by the publishers, and not Sony, so if you are upset about this direct your hate towards them. I can't imagine spending that kind of money on a game. EA PS4 games cost an eye-watering £63 from PlayStation Store [Eurogamer] |
| Rockstar trademarked a Bully title Posted: 25 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PST All Games Beta shared a trademark application filed by Rockstar for Bully Bullworth Academy: Canis Canem Edit, which is most likely going to be a Bully game. This could be just a re-release of the classic PlayStation 2 game, but even that would be awesome. Back in July Take-Two Interactive filed a Bully related trademark, and Rockstar has said that it would be interested in another Bully game. I think the signs are pointing towards a new Bully game, and I would love to see it happen. The only thing I would be more excited about would be Max Payne 4, or maybe the long-awaited PC version of Red Dead Redemption. |
| This might be Killer Instinct's new Fulgore design Posted: 24 Nov 2013 11:15 PM PST Killer Instinct may have launched with a paltry six characters, but that number is set to increase to eight early next year. Currently, fan favorites Spinal and Fulgore are in development, and thanks to a forum thread over at Double Helix Games that shows some concept art, we now have a closer look at what the latter design may look like. Robotic design? Check. Flowing hairpiece? Check. Glowing blue blades? It looks like all the right boxes are filled out here, and I can't wait to try him out regardless of what he looks like in the end. Fulgore [Double Helix forums] |
