Dino Run 2 has cameos from Minecraft, Journey, and more Posted: 24 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST Dino Run 2 (from PixelJam games) is marching right along towards potential success, though it's far from being a sure thing. Maybe this vote of confidence from some of the world's most well know developers will help. The game will feature a series of hats (more like masks) based on characters from Journey, Minecraft, Super Meat Boy, Critter Crunch, Sword and Sworcery, Braid, Spelunky, Shovel Knight, Hyper Light Drifter, Paradise Lost, World of Goo, Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers, N+, Guacamelee, Don't Starve, Bit.Trip, VVVVVV, Retro City Rampage, Bastion, Machinarium, and more. There's no telling why some games reach astounding heights on Kickstarter while others seem to struggle, but backing your title with a list of influential names like that certainly couldn't hurt.
Lisa is a men-only apocalyptic horror comedy 2D RPG Posted: 24 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST [Note: Footage is pre-alpha. Also, looks like I might be in the game now, so that's fun.] Not long ago, we heard that The Last of Us was planned to take place in an apocalypse where nearly every woman on the planet had become an infected, murderous monster. The developers of the game rejected the idea because it was "misogynistic", but many in the comments were interested in the concept. What would happen to society if it was left with no women? What would an all male world with no future look like? What truths would come out? Lisa looks to answer those questions. Created by martial artist Austin Jorgensen (who cites Streets of Rage and King of Fighters as inspirations), the game takes the same risk heavy, unflinching attitude towards design that one might take towards meeting an opponent in the squared circle. Jorgensen says- "I want the world of Lisa to be hard on the player... full of supernatural beings, weirdos, monsters, and just plain dumb people... a world full of drugs, violence and the decay of human intelligence". Selling information on potential allies to murderers, selling yourself for sex, even selling your limbs, no sacrifice is off limits in this world of desperate, big nipple'd men. With graphics that look heavily inspired by Mother 3, the cute-to-disturbing ration here looks high on both ends. The game has about $5,000 to go on Kickstarter, with 20 days left in the campaign. Seeing that Dropsy met its funding, maybe we can take Lisa on as the next disturbing and adorable underdog game to push into creation. Lisa the painful RPG [Kickstarter]
YES! It's the debut of Destructoid Huge News of the Week! Posted: 24 Nov 2013 11:30 AM PST As much as I loved hosting and co-creating The Destructoid Show, it was a show that was often limited by reality -- the reality of working for a big outlet like Revision3 (where producers and directors make all the final creative decisions), the reality that if the show didn't do well that my wife and I would starve to death, and the reality that not everyone can get behind ideas that burst into my brain after 2 hours of sleep and 6 cups of coffee. Thanks to Huge, I now have the opportunity to do a news show my way. The first order of business was finding a collaborator. I was lucky enough to rope the unflappable Caitlin Cooke into the job, and she's already taken to it like a fish to water. From there we had to figure out how to make a news show on our own. Considering the conditions I think we did pretty well, and with luck and experience we'll hopefully keep getting better. We've got a lot planned for future episode including review recaps, interviews with developers, and other surprises. I really hope you give the show a shot, and drop us a line at HolmesSupHolmes@gmail.com with your feedback and questions. We'll be reading a selection of them aloud on the next episode, so don't say anything you wouldn't want the world to hear.
Kamiya's Tweet about Bayonetta Wii U spurs fan campaign Posted: 24 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST Nintendo's announcement of Bayonetta 2 as a 2nd party Wii U exclusive was a big deal last year. Some fans immediately exploded with rage, demanding that the game also be brought to the PS3 instead. Now it seems those roles have reversed, although in a much more pleasant way. . Fans of the original game, (including it's director Hideki Kamiya), are asking for Bayonetta's first adventure to head over to the Wii U. Kamiya, famous for his twitter acumen, recently let his followers know that if Nintendo decided to give them the green light, Platinum could port Bayonetta to the Wii U before Bayonetta 2 is released next year. He went on to say "For people who haven't played Bayo1 yet but want to play Bayo2, I think it's a good idea to release Bayo1 before Bayo2. I hope that'll happen". That was enough for some ambitious dreamers over at NeoGaf to start "Operation Dead Angles" -- a group dedicated to making enough noise for Nintendo to bring Bayonetta to the Wii U, complete with list of applicable twitter accounts and Miiverse posts to apply to the cause. Nintendo and Xseed never opened up about exactly how much Operation Rainfall influenced their decisions to localize Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower, but seeing as all three games eventually made it to the US, we can guess that it didn't hurt. It would be interesting to see if a big fan campaign for Bayonetta on Wii U would carry any weight. Xbox 360-to-Wii U ports are reportedly fairly inexpensive to put out, and hile Bayonetta sold well enough on the PS3/360, it's fair to guess that there are plenty of Wii U owners that would be willing to pick the game up. Throw in some bonus features and a budget price and you have a release that's sure to bring in Bayonetta fans new and old. Make Captain Falcon playable, complete with Bayonetta-style sexy animations and half-nakedness and I'd be happy to double dip.
Rad Show: Setting up for Christmas Posted: 24 Nov 2013 09:30 AM PST It's almost Thanksgiving, so that means I have to get the Christmas Tree down from the attic. Normally I make Mrs. Lucha help, but she's busy so it's up to me to get this task done. Ever see someone stream getting a Christmas Tree out of an attic and then put it up? Well guess what, you get to see it here on Rad Show.
New Dragon Quest might get localized, trademarks spotted Posted: 24 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST It's been quite some time since a new Dragon Quest game has graced these shores, but if recent trademark sightings indicate anything, our fortunes might just be turning for the better in the near future. Uncovered over at Siliconera, two trademarks hint at the possibility that either Square Enix or Nintendo will perhaps localize new games in the series for western consumption. What makes both trademarks stand out is that they are in english (Luminaries of the Legendary Line and The Seeds of Salvation) and that they follow the clever alliteration traits of previous titles that have been localized, like Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelations and Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. Hopefully, if these trademarks prove to be valid proof of impending translations, we will get the Dragon Quest VII remake that's on 3DS. Though I guess I'd be down with Dragon Quest X on either Wii U or PC.
FIFA 14 crash reported on Xbox One Posted: 24 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST A recent post on the EA Sports support page confirms launching FIFA 14 on Xbox One, while two controllers are connected, may cause the game to crash during startup. The post breaks down the root of the crash to "using two separate controllers, both assigned to user profiles, and then using controller two to navigate the bootflow when FIFA 14 is loading can result in a crash." Additionally, other reports show the game is losing online functions when resumed after suspending the console while on the title screen. Currently there is no patch to resolve the issue, but EA has stated that they are working on a Day One patch to smooth things over, as well as improve Kinect voice commands and other co-op season crashes.
This 'Gamer Song' is just as good as you think Posted: 24 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST German YouTuber ForbiddenNickname clearly loves videogames. So much so that he has penned what I'm sure he feels is the greatest gamer anthem in the history of ever. Your mileage may vary. In what is some sort of weird hybrid between Rammstien and Kidz Bop, FN opines on all the rhyming ways he is a gamer -- such as "I'm a rocker/I'm a S.T.A.L.K.E.R.":, and "I'm a wizard/I love Blizzard" -- all to a pseudo-techno crunch. I especially love the way his Nerf gun shoots fire in time to the beat. The visuals are decidedly low-tech, but there is a random guy in a pale mask and rain slicker, so that makes it more German, I guess. In all honesty, I see what he's trying to do here: write an actual anthem to the culture he loves, but something about it just doesn't sit right. Honestly, there's no way to do this and not come off corny as all get out, even with the language barrier. "I'm a nerd/I'm a bird," indeed. Also...does flamer mean something else overseas? The chorus of "I'm a gamer/I'm not a lamer/I am a flamer" sounds odd to me, especially finishing it as he does by stretching out the syllables in the last line to "I am a Gay-mer" (yes, it's spelled that way in the lyrics). I mean, I don't speak German, so if he has already come out on one of his other videos, good on him. Just seems odd randomly stuck into the chorus of a song about generalized gamer tropes. Regardless, I think he might have a sense of humor about it, if the Batman line is any indicator...though he has mercifully turned off comments. Oh Germany...you so wacky!
Sup Holmes talks big with Cristina Vee Posted: 24 Nov 2013 06:45 AM PST This week on Sup Holmes we'll be graced the the presents of Cristina Vee, singer and voice actress. Cristina's past roles include Alisa Bosconovitch (Tekken: Blood Vengence), Noel, Nu-13, Mu-12, Lambda-11 (BlazBlue), Riven (League of Legends), Lian Shi (Dynasty Warriors 7), Carmen Sandiego, and many, many others. She's the lead performer on the original songs for Adventure Time: Hey Ice King Why'd You Steal Our Garbage, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and multiple other videogame soundtrack covers. Wait, there's more! She was also in indie sci-fi film Broken Spirits and was the director of vocal performances on Skullgirls (while providing the voice of Cerebella). We'll be talking to Cristina about what motivated her to get into performing, what it takes to make it in the industry, the evolving place of acting in videogames, her dream jobs, how much physical appearance matters in voice acting, and whatever else she wants to talk about. Join us at 1pm PST/4pm EST for the full chat!
Atlus is the undeniable king of trolls Posted: 24 Nov 2013 06:15 AM PST Atlus, I applaud you. Even if you're kind of a jerk. A lovable jerk. People the world over patiently waited for your NicoNico broadcast today. They abided the 72 hour countdown, suffered countless teaser videos, and stared at the clock as it slowly wound down. Fans pined desperately for a mere glimpse of Persona 5. And you delivered. But only after trolling your faithful acolytes one last time. The clock finally strikes zero. It's the middle of the night. Out comes an elderly woman in a pantsuit. Okay, that's chill. She seems pretty amusing. Heh. Well, that is until she announces footage of a new Persona game is being shown in the streets of Akihabara below. She blocks the screen, of course, swaying back and forth just enough to let you know it's there. The snickers of cameramen and production staff can be heard in the background as the tirade grows increasingly lengthy and ridiculous. At long last the stump speech comes to and end and we see... Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth? Well, that's certainly different. But I'm sure it will be great. And, after all, the Nintendo 3DS is all the rage in Japan. Then Atlus unveils Persona 4: Dancing All Night. Okay, that's kind of weird. Still, I'm totally down. But where's Persona 5? Suddenly, "55.555" rolls across the screen. The internet explodes. It's coming. It's finally coming. Winter 2014 can't arrive soon enough. Can you think of a more manipulative, toying game announcement in recent memory?
Posted: 24 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST If you know me, you know what a big comedy fan I am. Comedy is kind of my whole life, my passion, my raison d'etre, if you will. Videogames are obviously one of my other passions. So, when the two meet, I tend to be very hopeful, yet cautiously optimistic. Comedy in video games tends to be very hit or miss (as does comedy about games, but I self-aware-ingly digress) but when it works well, it's a rare thing of beauty. Stick It to the Man! is a thing of beauty.
Amazon's Black Friday videogame sales calendar revealed Posted: 24 Nov 2013 05:32 AM PST For those giddy to get their holiday savings on, Amazon has released their upcoming Black Friday calendar for crazy videogame sales. Kicking it off tomorrow, November 25 at 5:10 am PST, is a Skylanders Giants portal owner pack for the Nintendo Wii U. The sale concludes on the 29 with both Star Craft II titles. No prices are given, but at least you can schedule your days accordingly to catch the deals you want. I'm eyeing Rayman Legends, GTA V, Arkham Origins, and Remember Me. How about you?
Saint Seiya: Brave Soldiers hits PS3 November 26 Posted: 24 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST Saint Seiya: Brave Soldiers' destiny clashes this Tuesday, November 26, when it smashes its way onto North American PlayStation 3's. Released last week in Europe, both at retail and on PSN, the NA version of the game is foregoing retail to head straight to the digital shelves. Developed by Dimps (Dragon Ball Budokai trilogy and Street Fighter IV), the fighting game, based off the popular anime and manga series, will include over 50 playable characters. Additionally, the game's story mode covers the three main arcs of the original story: the Sanctuary arc, the Poseidon arc, and the Hades arc. Fans on Saint Seiya check back later in the week for our review once Brave Soldiers goes live.
My fondest videogame memories involve breaking them Posted: 24 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST [Dtoid community blogger JoyfulSanity has rediscovered the joy of gaming... through breaking his games. Want to see your own blog appear on our front page? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon] I've gotten hundreds of hours' worth of entertainment out of Borderlands 2, yet I've never laughed harder than when my motley crew of friends discovered an exploit that turned a quest NPC into a Garry's Mod style rag doll. And when I say "never laughed harder," I'm talking about those laughing fits that have you keeled over while you desperately gasp for air, with tears filling your eyes as your lungs start to hurt with every giggle that escapes your mouth. Videogames have made me laugh and cry, but rarely do they send me into complete euphoria unless there's a glitch and a few friends involved. I know bugs are the bane of a developer's existence, and occasionally they can ruin everything for gamers as well. But for those lapses of judgment that lead to unintentionally amazing gameplay experiences, I can only extend to the creators my sincerest thanks.
Question: What do you think of the PS4 & Xbox One now? Posted: 24 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST Now that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are finally here and the dust has settled, the Destructoid team is curious to know what everyone thinks of their shiny new consoles. Did you get them both? What do you think of each systems user interfaces? How about games? Are they the best launch lineups to date? Any surprises? Has it been worth the wait? Let us know all your trials and tribulations below! Personally, I'm in love with the Xbox One's new dashboard. I know it sounds stupid, but I've been mesmerized by the TV integration. As for games, Resogun has lived up to the hype, but I have to say my time with Ryse has been a guilty pleasure. It sure is shallow, but in short bursts stabbing barbarians in the throat never looked so sweet.
Consumers spent $3.45 billion on videogames last quarter Posted: 24 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST According to a recent report from the NPD group, U.S. consumers spent 3.45 billion dollars last quarter on videogame content -- up 17 percent from the same quarter in 2012. Leading the charge was Grand Theft Auto 5, which shattered all single-day sales records with an $800 million dollar opening. Additionally, the report stated that physical game software accounted for $1.30 billion, while another $1.75 billion was spent on digital content (DLC, subscriptions, social, mobile, and full digital purchases). Used sales and rentals made up the remainder at $436 million. NPD Group: $3.45 billion spent on games in Q3 2013 [Game Industry International]
See those adorable Japanese McDonald Mario toys in action Posted: 24 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PST Remember those awesome Japanese Mario Happy Meal toys we showed last week? Well now there are a bunch a video's confirming just how cool they are. Okay... well maybe they aren't that cool, but they would look pretty classy on any gaming shelf. And who could resist Mario in a penguin suit scooting across a table?
Start your day with this soothing Legend of Zelda cover Posted: 24 Nov 2013 12:00 AM PST I don't think I will ever tire of the music form The Legend of Zelda. The series has provided some of the most memorable and inspirational music in gaming -- with Ocarina of Time standing front and center with some of its best. And with that, here's my latest obsession. An amazing medley of Ocarina's Song of Time and Song of Storms by violinist Taylor Davis. It's quite a stunning cover, with a video that is equally charming. You also gotta love the spot-on Shiek costume she's sporting. If you enjoyed what you heard, Davis is currently selling a 16-track album of Zelda music digitally, which you can preview right here.

Persona 4: Dancing All Night waltzes to PS Vita next fall Posted: 23 Nov 2013 09:31 PM PST Put this atop the list of things you never knew you always wanted. Persona 4: Dancing All Night is bumping and grinding its way to PlayStation Vita, Atlus announced tonight via its revelatory NicoNico broadcast. The rhythm action game is set six months after the events of Persona 4, when the lovely Rise Kujikawa returns to her job as an idol. In addition to dancing up a storm, players will once again combat monstrous Shadows in a strange new world called the Mayonaka Stage. Persona 4: Dancing All Night is a collaboration between the Persona team alongside Dingo, creators of Sega's Hatsune Miku Project DIVA series. The strange and completely unexpected title is scheduled to take center stage in autumn 2014. We'll be looking forward to it. Do want. Persona 4: Dancing All Night [Atlus]

The fighting game is a follow-up to the absolutely amazing Persona 4 Arena, and serves as a continuation of that story. A new trailer for the absurdly named title indicates the Japanese arcade version will enter the ring later this week, on November 28, 2013. Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold [Atlus] |
| Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth crawls to 3DS in 2014 Posted: 23 Nov 2013 09:13 PM PST Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth is heading to Nintendo 3DS, Atlus has announced. | Super Mario 3D World hip-hop remix by Dj Cutman Posted: 23 Nov 2013 08:00 PM PST We've said time and again how great the Super Mario 3D World soundtrack is. The team used the game's main theme quite extensively in promotional videos for the game, and it became obvious that they were taking the series in a more swing and jazz-oriented direction with the inclusion of a big band brass ensemble. Well, Dj Cutman had other plans, and has infused the catchy main theme with some hip-hop flavor. I can certainly dig it, and would love to hear more of the game's amazing music get some remixing attention as well. Anyone have a favorite track yet? |
