The Last Express Gold Edition launches on Steam

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST

Jordan Mechner's The Last Express, a game set on the Orient Express one day before World War I kicks off, has been re-released on Steam as a special Gold Edition, adding new features and improvements to the adventure title that originally launched back in 1997.

The Last Express: Gold Edition comes with an advanced hint system, Steam achievements, an improved inventory system and several in-game bonuses including detailed character biographies.

Back in 2012 The Last Express was ported onto iOS, which was followed by an Android version that launched this August.

The best and worst games of the week - Xbox One is here!

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 10:15 AM PST

After last week's PlayStation 4 review domination, Microsoft finally got it's chance to strut its stuff with the Xbox One. Forza Motorsports 5, Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Crimson Dragon, Ryse, and a handful of other exclusive titles flooded our pages this week. But regardless of all the Xbox One hype, their games were far from the biggest titles of the week.

Two titles, fin fact, garnered our coveted 10 out of 10 score. Nintendo's Super Mario 3D Land and from Little Big Planer creators, Media Molecule, Tearaway. If you've been holding out on either the Wii U or PS Vita, you may have just found your first two must have system-selling titles of the year.

Chill with Phil! I managed to get an Xbox One, let's go!

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 09:30 AM PST

It's another week ladies and gents and coming along with it another major console release. And with the release of the Xbox One we are officially at the start of the next generation of games! Feels a bit like a birthday, you expect something to change, some feeling to happen, yet, in the end it feels kind of the same. In either case we are putting Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty off again for another week... DON'T EVEN SAY IT! This weekend was supposed to be our Destructoid t-shirt drive and when that fell through I knew I still had to do a show. Plus I am having a hard time putting down Dead Rising 3.

For those who don't know I am one who is on the "love it" side of the Dead Rising debate. So much so that I sort of idolize Frank West, the first game in the series protagonist. It was refreshing to see Capcom break away from their usual "anime pretty" main characters and give us someone everybody can get behind, an everyman's everyman. Plus he's covered wars, ya know? Oh, and I may play Killer Instinct or Assassin's Creed 4 at some point too. Since Spencer and I are going to be gone from the channel for this next week while we stuff our faces I feel this may be a good way to lead off into a break.

Terraria coming to PS Vita this December

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST

Sony has revealed via a magazine advertisement that Terraria will be making its way onto the PlayStation Vita this December.

The advert, which was spotted by VideoGamer in this week's edition of MCV, shows a screenshot of Re-Logic's 2D action-adventure sandbox with a December 4 release date for the PS Vita. This has been a rather long time coming for PS Vita users as, if you recall, the original announcement was made back in March.

Terraria was launched back in 2011 on PC, before making its way onto the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and has sold over three million copies to date.

Review: Company of Heroes 2: Victory at Stalingrad DLC

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST

Victory at Stalingrad is paid DLC that's a part of the larger Turning Point update, which also includes new free multiplayer maps, the World Builder tools, four free commanders, and four premium commanders. The free stuff is great, so even if you don't want to buy more DLC for Company of Heroes 2, you will still find something new if you jump back into the game.

I really enjoyed the base game quite a bit, and it has added a lot of content since its release. It's also been patched up, balanced, and polished even further. Finally, the new content is here, and I can't wait to fail miserably at all of it.

TotalBiscuit and Day[9] discuss StarCraft II and eSports

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 07:30 AM PST

When someone gives you the opportunity to interview two people who you have looked up to as idols, there is no thinking to be done, only a garbled "HECKYES" to be shot out of your mouth hole.

There are four amazing casters this at this weekend's Red Bull Battlegrounds: Day[9], TotalBiscuit, Mr. Bitter, and djWHEAT. Recently, I was lucky enough to get to ask the former two questions about StarCraft, eSports, and even HearthStone. I learned, I laughed, I freaked out because these guys are huge personalities and really smart and I'm not worthy.

The top 10 videogame pro wrestlers

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST

[Dtoid community blogger TheDustinThomas ranks his top 10 favorite videogame wrestlers. Because why not? Want to see your own blog appear on our front page? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon]

For those of you who don't know, I spent 10 years as a professional wrestler. I use the word 'spent' because I recently retired. Mostly due to the fact that my back is all kinds of messed up and because I have a other things in my life that I need to devote more time to. Despite this, I still love the business, and if you've read any of my previous Cblogs, you already know that I love videogames. I started thinking about it and realized that professional wrestling and videogames have intertwined themselves quite often, not just with wrestling games, but characters in other games who play the part of a wrestler.

So what I want to do is count down the top 10 videogame professional wrestlers. I'm not talking about a list comprised of WWE stars who are the best in their games, I'm talking fake 'fake' wrestlers. LET'S GET STARTED!

Impressions: Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox One and PS4)

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST

Now that the servers are live on Xbox One, I had a chance to sit down with the newest Call of Duty and test out both next-gen versions of the game. I'm pleased to report that they not only have feature parity with the PC version (and thus, don't feel gimped like on 360 and PS3), but the visuals are markedly improved, and online play is much smoother than any COD game before it.

There's just one problem -- it's still Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Review: The Shivah - Kosher Edition

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST

Whilst Kickstarter has been abuzz in the last year or so seemingly reviving the point-'n-click adventure genre, Wadjet Eye Games has been quietly and successfully putting out quality adventure games for a number of years now as a publisher and developer. Gemini Rue, Resonance, Primordia, and the Blackwell franchise are its most well-known titles but the studio kicked things off in 2006 with The Shivah.

Now seven years later, the game has been re-released with updated graphics and new music; it's definitely interesting to go back and see the company's first game but is The Shivah: Kosher Edition worth playing in 2013?

Our comments system has a ton of new features

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 05:30 AM PST

As you may have already noticed, Disqus recently received a pretty hefty update, and there are a TON of new embed options for various forms of media. YouTube and Vimeo videos, Google Maps, Soundcloud songs, Twitter cards -- the list goes on.

You could check out the full list of enhancements here (including instructions for hiding them, if you're so inclined), but wouldn't it be more fun to just spam this thread with a bunch of random bullshit?

Yes. Yes it would.

I'll start.

Red Bull Battlegrounds is under way

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST

Watch live video from redbullesports on www.twitch.tv

As if MLG Columbus wasn't already enough tournament for one weekend to hold, StarCraft II fans can rest easy knowing that the Red Bull Battlegrounds in NYC are taking place starting now! Eight competitors will be duking it out for a chance at $50,000 worth of prizes. You can view the schedule as it updates right here on the Red Bull Battlegrounds website.

There are some seriously heavy hitters competing today, including MC and Bomber. Six of the players are from South Korea, while Snute comes from Sweden and Scarlett hails from Canada. It's looking to be a very intense weekend, as half of these players had to fight tooth and nail to qualify and are looking to rise to the top! Personally, I think MC is going to have a hell of a weekend and come out on top. Who are you rooting for?

Check back later in the day for an interview with casters Day[9] and TotalBiscuit!

Review: Killer Instinct (Xbox One)

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 04:30 AM PST

When Killer Instinct was announced, I don't think I had heard the silencing of so many screams since the destruction of Alderaan. While many gamers quickly jumped for joy at the mere mention of this resurrection, said joy was completely obliterated when Microsoft said these two fateful words -- "Double Helix."

The Rare of old is dead and buried, and handing off such a storied franchise to a developer who generally handled licensed games was...interesting, to say the least. But here we are months later, and you know what?

It kind of worked out.

My 15th anniversary tribute to Ocarina of Time

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST

[Dtoid community blogger kingsharkboi remembers one of the greatest games of all time (and shares some wonderful tribute music in the process). Want to see your own blog appear on our front page? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon]

This week marks at least a couple of significant highlights for gaming fans, not the least of which include the Xbox One launch, the release of Super Mario 3D World, and of course The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. But I'd like to take the time out to celebrate the anniversary of one of the most significant titles in this interactive medium. A title that has no doubt played a large part in inspiring many audiences to look to videogames for providing that perfect sense of adventure, escapism, and discovery we've all come to know throughout the years.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is now 15 years old as of 11/21/2013, and remains my favorite videogame ever since I first experienced the Hero of Time's gripping journey.

[Every week, from early November through the end of 2013, I'll report on my use of Wii Fit U and how it benefits my health.]

Read Week 1's weigh-in here.

If this Wii Fit U weekly weigh-in accomplishes only one thing, I want it to be a clear measure of just how much weight I'll gain Thanksgiving week. It's going to be gross, folks.

Dtoid Community Weekends: You should play more games

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST

People are always asking me, "Hey Andy, is there anything fun happening at Dtoid this weekend?" And I'm always like, "You're goddamn right there is!"

Here's some of it:

Over in our Forums, this weekend is all about the gaming. First, there's smurfee mcgee's Weekend Warriors thread, which is basically like Friday Night Fights except it happens on the days after Friday and before Monday. I mean, if you're going to be gaming this weekend, why not game with your fellow Dtoider? We're quite the lovely bunch. Or, if you prefer a more civilized approach to your games, hit up the Destructoid Chess Club by Nihil. Who knew you could play chess on the Internet?

While you're at it, go check out Nihil's Is It Tuesday? thread, which is dedicated to getting people back in the tournament hosting mood. Whether you're a tourney noob or an old hand itching to get back into it, you owe it to yourself to check it out! Too much forethought for your taste? Well then, why not just bookmark Jon Bloodspray's What do you want to play RIGHT NOW?! thread? It's exactly what it sounds like, and is perfect for the ADD among you. (Which is all of you.)

As for the Cblogs, a super-secret email thread I infiltrated has informed me that the faptastic CblogRecaps crew is hard at work picking their favorite blogs of the year for their annual "best of" post. If you want to see your blog featured, you'd best get writing!

Anything else fun going on this weekend? Give us a shout-out in the comments!

Slime Girls, Twine, and glorious trash with Porpentine

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST

Last Sunday on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we spent an hour and a half with the enigmatic, pragmatic, elastic, fantastic Porpentine. This one was a real blur for me, more so than most episodes. Talking to Porpentine imbues you with an infectious energy that makes you feel slightly out of reality. It's a real treat.

Topics included Porpentines work at Free Indie GamesRock Paper Shotgun, the fun, dancing, and music of her latest graphics-focused game Armada , how to treat a woman, the blessing/curse of a creative drive, the relationship between creator and audience, Howling Dogs and Richard Hofmeier, gainging funding through Patreon, the magic of Twitter, and so much more.

Thanks again to Porpentine for spending the time with us, and tune in this this Sunday when we welcome Cristina Vee (songstress and voice actress on ShantaeLeague of LegendsSkullgirls and many others) to the program.

Japanese TV ads: Super Mario 3D World is so kawaii

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PST

Super Mario 3D World is out now in North America and it's amazing. The wonderful Wii U platformer also launched this week over in Japan, where it received a trio of rather adorable television advertisements.

Between the effervescent commentary and charming "Neko Mario" hand puppet, I just couldn't help but crack a smile while watching these videos. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'm going to go jump back into the game now. I can't resist. Agh, it's so good!

Try playing this new Mario Party mini-game in public

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 03:30 PM PST

Today was a big day for Nintendo as both Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds both came out. There was also another major first party title for the 3DS released today with Mario Party: Island Tour.

I checked out Mario Party last month and one of the new mini-games will make you feel embarrassed every time you do it when playing with others. The game requires you to use the built in mic to mimic the voice of notable Nintendo characters, getting the pitch just right.

Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy demonstrates the game in this video, albeit it's done very over the top.

Enjoy this Kentucky Route Zero play 'The Entertainment'

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 08:30 AM PST

Whilst I check everyday to see if Act III of Kentucky Route Zero has downloaded, the folks at developer Cardboard Computer have released a standalone experience called The Entertainment. You'll take control of an uncredited actor portraying a drunken barfly observing events in a bar. Which is really a theatre. Which might not be real. Kinda.

Evelyn is confiding in Harry about her husband Ted who is out of town due to his job as a hammer salesmen. Evelyn's worried that Ted might be tempted to cheat on her but Ted's well, like, a good man. Harry's been on vacation to New Orleans, spent seven days beside the beach. Or was it the pool, hard to remember. Pearl's gonna make some changes; she's not gonna take care of her parents anymore, all they do is take advantage of her but they know Pearl will pick up their tab. A debt's a debt after all.

The Entertainment was performed one night in Buffalo in in 1973 and was written by Lula Chamberlain who was the artist that was featured in a gallery show last month that I posted about. At the time I wasn't sure if she was even real, as Lula appears in Act II of Kentucky Route Zero.

She was apparently an avant-garde artist during the 1960s but only gathered a small amount of acclaim. I hadn't realized that the Cardboard Computer guys put out a virtual gallery game called Limits & Demonstrations at the start of the year, which was a described as a "virtual retrospective." The Entertainment is worth experiencing (the song towards the end was lovely) but it's making me anxious to play Act III.
