| All four Pokemon Origins episodes now in English Posted: 22 Nov 2013 03:00 PM PST The fourth and final localized episode of the Pokemon Origins mini-series is now live for you to view. As a reminder, Origins is based completely on the Pokemon Red/Blue games, as opposed to the horrible prolonged and never ending anime series that features that giant man baby Ash Ketchum. While this series is based on the original game, there is the tie-in to Pokemon X and Y with the whole Mega Evolution stuff. Oh yeah Charizard, go Super Saiyan and kick Mewtwo's ass! |
| White Xbox One controllers are selling for HOW MUCH? Posted: 22 Nov 2013 02:30 PM PST I'm fond of those special "I made this" Xbox One consoles and controllers that Microsoft employees have been showing off, I'll admit it. But to think that someone is out there paying several hundred dollars for a white gamepad is breaking my perception of reality. Take a look at these listings on eBay. Who are you people, and what do you even do with one of these things once you get it? Keep it in mint condition? Play games with it? I can only imagine how dirty it'd get from regular use. |
| Co-op puzzler Tiny Brains locked in for December 3 on PS4 Posted: 22 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST Speahead Games' cooperative puzzle-action game Tiny Brains has been hovering around the launch of the PlayStation 4, but it sounds like this is it. It is now, finally, confirmed for release on Tuesday, December 3. Good timing, if you've already got a PS4 and will be in need of a new game shortly or are planning to buy the console next month. Tiny Brains looks like a pleasant return to couch co-op (multiplayer is drop-in/drop-out), something I'm happy to see embraced on fancy new gaming hardware. | The new Super and Ultra Combos of Ultra Street Fighter IV Posted: 22 Nov 2013 01:30 PM PST Capcom has put out videos for four of the new characters in Ultra Street Fighter IV (still no sign of that final combatant). These are short, sweet, and to the point. Yes, Elena can heal and yes, Rolento is a badass. What else is new? My favorite part about the videos is the message we got from our tipster, Adrian, which said: "...just do yourself a favor and avert your eyes for the Hugo ones, that shit is like the Ark of the Covenant." Best thing I've heard all day. [Thanks, Adrian] |
| Posted: 22 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST MLG Columbus is taking place all weekend, and the festivities have already begun AND YOU'RE LATE! Dota 2 and Call of Duty: Ghosts are the tasty flavors offered up this weekend, the former of which has had a constantly increasing prize pool, which is now up to $128,882, which is an extra $78,882. Wow, you rock Dota 2 community. You can stream the event at the official MLG website, or you can watch the Dota 2 matches while inside the client, as usual. Columbus has one of the best, if not the best, combination of competing Dota 2 teams since The International 2013, so it is definitely worth a watch. Also, something something Call of Duty: Ghosts. I don't know shi*t about that game. The official schedule for the weekend can be viewed here. |
| EA Sports commits to improving messy NBA Live 14 Posted: 22 Nov 2013 12:30 PM PST NBA Live 14 marks the return of the series and people aren't feeling it. With a Metascore of 45 for the PlayStation 4 version, executive producer Sean O'Brien says it best: "I'm not going to lie; it's been a rough week. As you can imagine, this isn't exactly the NBA LIVE comeback story we were hoping for this year." The team isn't looking for a pity party, however. "First, you've told us that the game is too hard to learn, and that the only way to figure it out is through frustrating trial-and-error. As a result, we are working on improving the way the game teaches the controls and on-boards new users." Another common complaint was the game's unpolished visuals and animation. "Improvements on these fronts are also in development now," he stated. "You will notice in the coming weeks and months that the game’s visuals and animation will improve significantly." For those of you stuck with a copy of NBA Live 14, you may just want to hang onto the game, although if I were in that position I know I wouldn't. "In order to get gameplay up and running this year we had to prioritize," explained O'Brien. You don't say. Letter from NBA LIVE 14 Executive Producer Sean O'Brien [EA Sports] |
| PAX East 2014 Indie Megabooth submissions now open Posted: 22 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST Indie Megabooth has opened up submissions for PAX East 2014. Developers have until December 15 at 11:59PM EST to submit their application, and those accepted will be notified on January 13, 2014. The FAQ has a breakdown of what applicants can expect in terms of cost. For instance, the organization recommends you budget anywhere from $2,000 to $7,000 depending on how lavish you want to go. The Minibooth, located within the Megabooth, will run you significantly less with costs ranging from $500 to $1,000. The Indie Megabooth will take up at least an entire day for you to check out completely, and I've found with the last few PAXs that this is where the best games of the show tend to be. |
| John Carmack, Fulgore, Crash Bandicoot, and Tomb Raider 2 Posted: 22 Nov 2013 11:45 AM PST [Note: YouTube's still processing the trimmed video. The show actually starts at the 20:10 mark] Hey everybody! If you missed it, Spencer and I went live earlier this afternoon with a very low-key, laid back episode of The DTOID Show. We covered some news, like Carmack's departure from id, the inevitable PS4 and Vita bundle, Sunset Overdrive looks cool, I'm excited about Fulgore in Killer Instinct, Telltale might be doing a Game of Thrones game and the next Tomb Raider is going to be a sequel. Um. Duh. |
| Xbox One sells over one million units in 24 hours Posted: 22 Nov 2013 11:30 AM PST Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One has sold over one million units within the first 24 hours it went on sale in the 13 markets it was released in. Just like Sony, this was also a record breaking number in Xbox's history, surpassing day one Xbox 360 sales. Additionally, Microsoft shared some stats on the first party games people have been playing:
Wow that many people got suckered into Ryse, eh? Pretty impressed that 60 million zombies have already been killed within 24 hours. That's pretty nuts. |
| Earn double XP in Battlefield 4 starting on Thanksgiving Posted: 22 Nov 2013 11:00 AM PST DICE says that its number-one priority is to address Battlefield 4's launch issues. According to general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson, "...we are so serious that we have the entire team working to stabilize the game and we will not move on to other projects until we are sure that Battlefield 4 meets -- and exceeds -- your expectations. It is the right thing to do." While double-XP events are common among prolific first-person shooter series like this, DICE is hosting one from November 28 through December 5 specifically with those folks who have had issues playing BF4 in mind. On the final day, players are also getting a M1911 pistol scope with a 3X zoom that's currently reserved for developers at the company. I haven't logged in much play time in the last couple weeks, but I'm still hearing reports of nasty technical issues with the game, especially now that more versions have been released. I guess I've had generally good fortune for once. Having been there for prior Battlefield launches, however, I know this pain all too well. |
| Xbox One consoles experiencing hardware issues Posted: 22 Nov 2013 10:30 AM PST It's not a console launch without issues. As with the PlayStation 4, some users are experiencing hardware troubles with their newly acquired Xbox Ones. This Reddit thread has a collection of users with consoles that make a grinding noise when they enter a disc into the tray. There are other issues being reported on the Xbox forums, but the majority seem to be the grinding noise issue. Microsoft has released a statement regarding the issue: |
| Live show: Killer Instinct practice Posted: 22 Nov 2013 09:50 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] I don't know if you've ever heard me gush about it, but I absolutely love the Killer Instinct franchise. Like, REALLY love it. I've played over a couple thousand hours of the original alongside friends, and even own an original Killer Instinct arcade cabinet. So I'm sure you could imagine how excited I am about the release of a new entry being released for the Xbox One. Be sure to come by Mash Tactics tonight, and share my excitement, as we dig in, and put the new game through it's paces. QotD: What is YOUR all time favorite fighting game? |
| Destructoid's favorite last-gen multi-platform games Posted: 22 Nov 2013 09:30 AM PST To commemorate the launch of new consoles, we've taken to retrospective pieces to remember some of the best titles on each system. We did it with the Wii last year, and we've done it with the PS3 and Xbox 360 over the last two weeks. But, that doesn't really paint a complete picture of the past eight years of gaming. Undoubtedly, third-party published games were just as important to the growth and prosperity of the last generation of consoles as first-party titles were. It wouldn't be right to deny them their time in the limelight just because they could be found on multiple systems. These were the Destructoid Staff's favorite multi-platform titles: |
| Players criticized Bad Company for not being serious Posted: 22 Nov 2013 09:15 AM PST It was reassuring to hear that some people within DICE were interesting in working on Battlefield: Bad Company again. I quite like straight-faced Battlefield games -- their multiplayer, anyway -- but the Bad Company titles have such a wonderful personality to them. A quote from Patrick Bach about the series, however, doesn't inspire much confidence. Speaking to OXM, the executive producer of Battlefield 4 said "When we did the original Bad Company and the sequel, we got a lot of criticism. Why would I play this? It's not a serious shooter, I don't care about this. I want a serious shooter with a more hard-boiled angle. And we thought it was fun! We loved it, we thought it was a great game. The narrative was amazing and the characters were amazing. "So it's not that we've buried the crew, so to speak," Bach explained. "But it is true that for some reason if you want to make a game for the masses, you need to be more neutral when it comes to things like humor, because humor is very personal. Some people love it, some people hate it." If we are lucky enough to get another Bad Company and its humor is cookie-cutter as a result of all this, I'll be so very disappointed. Not every game has to be a mass-market game. I think DICE realizes this, but when there's a limited amount of resources at your disposal and only so many projects can be taken on, that mass-market money will prove difficult to turn down. Battlefield: Bad Company's humour limited its appeal, says DICE [OXM] |
| Five new Disney Infinity toys are out this month Posted: 22 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST Disney Infinity will see new toys and Power Discs released this month. In fact, a couple are out today as you can get the Wreck-It Ralph figure from Walmart, and the Rapunzel toy from Best Buy. Vanellope will be out on November 24 at Target, and the all three of the toys are going for $12.99. All three of these figures will also be retailer exclusives from November 24 to December 31. Lastly the Frozen Toy Box Pack will include Anna and Elsa for $29.99, and that will be a national release. There's also 20 new Power Discs! Here's the full breakdown: |
| Demon's and Dark Souls influenced the PS4's development Posted: 22 Nov 2013 08:45 AM PST The Souls series has many admirers. From the studio making The Witcher series, to the rabid fan base that's sworn by its hardcore and uncompromising gameplay -- the Demon's Souls and Dark Souls can be easily seen as among the most important titles released in the last generation. And now, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, has claimed that the series even inspired many of the vital features for PlayStation 4. During a recent PlayStation Blogcast, Shuhei Yoshida talked briefly about the action-RPG titles and how their unique gameplay inspired them during the development of the PS4. "I was checking out YouTube videos of people playing the game because this game is perfect to learn from other players how to attack the same situation with very different strategies," he said. "Lots of things that Demon's Souls and Dark Souls did [like] leaving the messages to other people asynchronously -- so you feel connected, but not really connected at the same time -- all of these things inspired us when we were designing the system features for PS4." Strangely enough, Yoshida didn't like Demon's Souls when he first tried it out, and even went as far as calling it "crap". But of course, he's since regretted not giving it a chance as the game was big hit when it was published by Atlus. He even went on to explain during the podcast that he gave the title another chance and named both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls some of his favorite games of the generation. Also among that list was Journey, which uses similar asynchronous online gameplay. It's rare to see such producers speak honestly about the development of their creations, and even admit to their mistakes. Like it or not, the Souls series has been an influence on many different developers, and considering its origins as an underdog title, it's nothing short of extraordinary to see how much of an impact it has made. Demon's & Dark Souls inspired the PS4's features, says Yoshida [Eurogamer] |

| Europe will get the PlayStation 4 App next week Posted: 22 Nov 2013 08:15 AM PST Although us Americans have been enjoying the PlayStation 4 App for a little while now, our European brethren will have to wait until next week. The delay is reportedly due to "some final tweaks" to ensure the smoothness of the app. Coincidentally the app will launch alongside of the European PS4 release date on the 29th, so it's not that big of a deal. But still, there's no better feeling than messing around with a piece of technology, waiting for an imminent release -- or maybe I'm just a giant nerd. The PlayStation App launches next week [PlayStation Blog] |
| Friday Night Fights: Built for the future Posted: 22 Nov 2013 07:45 AM PST Happy Friday everyone! Welcome to another edition of Destructoid's Friday Night Fights! We finally made it, we are now fully into the next gen of gaming! Can you feel the excitement? I know I sure can! Last night, Microsoft launched the Xbox One, ushering in a new era of ad filled dashboards everywhere! Amazing. |

| John Carmack leaves id Software to work at Oculus Rift Posted: 22 Nov 2013 07:15 AM PST John Carmack has left id Software to fully join the makers of the Oculus Rift. Carmack had joined the Oculus team earlier this year but had said he would continue to work at id in a leadership role. That role has ended today as Tim Willits, studio director at id has told IGN: "John's work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects." Carmack's admiration of the Oculus Rift tech has been well documented over the last few years and hardware development seems to be his passion now. Earlier this year, studio president Todd Hollenshead left id as well, so it seems like a period of change in one of the oldest game studios still standing. That said, I'm happy Carmack is injecting his considerable talent into the refinement of the Oculus Rift; that's the one piece of hardware coming soon that I really want to get my hands on. | Atlus teases with Midnight Channel-themed broadcasts Posted: 22 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST Atlus is counting the hours until this weekend's Persona reveal with a livestream over at NicoNico. While it's mostly just dead air, at midnight in Japan the past couple of days, the broadcast has featured short recordings evoking Persona 4's Midnight Channel. I'm not sure how much more of this I can take. At least we needn't wait too much longer. Persona Channel News Flash [NicoNico via MysticMage97, Siliconera] |
| MGS V: Ground Zeroes has exclusive Xbox One content too Posted: 22 Nov 2013 06:45 AM PST In this Xbox One game montage video, there's a brief reference to Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, which will have content exclusive to Microsoft's platform in addition to the exclusive Deja Vu mission for PlayStation 4 featuring Classic Snake. Naturally, we haven't the slightest clue what the content for Xbox One will entail -- that'd be far too easy. Realistically, though, how much cooler than low-poly Snake can you get? Tough act to follow. |
| Go listen to the entire Lightning Returns soundtrack Posted: 22 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST I may not be much of a Final Fantasy player, but I always find myself loving their soundtracks. Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII just came out in Japan this past week, and YouTuber MarquisofElmdoor has uploaded the entire soundtrack for the game on his channel. I'm only a few tracks in as of this writing, and so far it's all sounding pretty great. There's 74 tracks in all, so I'm going to be listening this well into the weekend. As for the rest of the world, Lightning Returns will be out in North America, Australia, and Europe the the second week of February. |
| Microsoft says Sunset Overdrive's coming in 2014 Posted: 22 Nov 2013 06:15 AM PST When Microsoft bombarded us with a barrage of upcoming games at its 2013 E3 press conference, one of the titles that stood out was Insomniac Games' Sunset Overdrive. Maybe it was because of the bright color palette, maybe it was due to the quick parkour movements, but Sunset Overdrive just looked flat-out fun. Hopefully it is fun, because by most accounts, Xbox One's stable of launch games isn't necessarily cutting it. In a celebratory post commemorating the console's launch, Microsoft mentions that Sunset Overdrive is slated for 2014. Of course it's vague and details are sparse, but it's just nice knowing that this one isn't getting lost in the shuffle. Sunset Overdrive seems like one of the games that you look forward to playing when you buy an Xbox One. The Worldwide Launch Of Xbox One Sparks A Global Celebration [Xbox Wire] |
| Posted: 22 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST Not all simulators are created equal. While some let you dabble into the tiniest microcosmic detail like individual wages of specific levels of society, others are content to let you roam free in a zen garden-like state. The newest iteration of Zoo Tycoon is decidedly the latter, as there's nary a concept presented throughout the course of a game that a child couldn't eventually figure out. While Zoo Tycoon may not be the most complicated simulator on the market, it has a distinct amount of charm that distances itself from the rush-job many people were expecting. It's also pretty damn adorable. |
| Freedom Wars gameplay trailer shows some battle tactics Posted: 22 Nov 2013 05:45 AM PST This new trailer for PlayStation Vita title Freedom Wars looks promising. It shows a group of teens facing off against one of the "Abductor" enemies which are, as their name implies, abducting people. My favorite part of this trailer comes at the 2:00 mark, where the team uses their grappling lines to anchor and drag the monstrosity to a prone position. You see hookshots in games all the time, but rarely applied in this method, and it looks like a fun team activity. |
| Tides of Numenera devs ask if fans want real-time combat Posted: 22 Nov 2013 05:30 AM PST Torment: Tides of Numenera developer inXile entertainment just put out a blog post with a Q&A video that has details on the game's alignment system, and they ask fans how they would like to see combat implemented. The first option is to have real-time combat with pausing -- this is the classic system from Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate. All characters move and fight at the same time, and the player can pause at any point to issue orders. The other option would be to have turn-based combat, which would be similar to Fallout and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Either system sounds good to me, but I think I would prefer the real-time with pausing. It would match how the older Black Isle games used to play, and that's one of the things I really want from Torment. |
| Block Blocks is fun to say, perhaps fun to play Posted: 22 Nov 2013 05:15 AM PST From its description as a "tower defense-inspired puzzle game," Block Blocks doesn't sound amazing, but in motion it looks like it could be quite hectic, and it almost has an early Bit.Trip aesthetic to it. The gameplay is explained succinctly in the title: players must draw lines in order to stop the blocks from moving in particular directions. Mostly, I like the name. It reminds me of the hypothetical WiiWare game that RetroForceGO came up with, Puzzle Puzzle Puzzle. I wonder if we could get a coalition of Block Blocks enthusiasts together, to form a Block Blocks bloc. Then we can sell predatory birds (hawk hawks), punch woolen footwear (sock socks), and maybe even waterproof roosters (I'll leave this one up to you to figure out). Block Blocks, Block Blocks, all you do to me is Block Blocks. |
| This sure does look like a LEGO The Hobbit game Posted: 22 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST Over on the Brickset forums, a teaser page for a LEGO The Hobbit game has been found in the instruction booklets for the upcoming LEGO sets based on The Desolation of Smaug. Warner Bros. hasn't announced this yet, but the ad suggests the game will launch on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PC, and 3DS next year. I'd wager PS4, Xbox One, and PS Vita releases are also likely. This is LEGO, after all -- it's coming to everything. Presumably, the game will cover all three of Peter Jackson's Hobbit films. It darn well better! For as much as I enjoyed LEGO The Lord of the Rings, I don't know that I'm keen to play more of this stuff. Perhaps that'll change over the course of next year. | Play it back: Twitch stream archiving likely for PS4 Posted: 22 Nov 2013 04:45 AM PST One of the biggest selling points of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for a lot of people is the integrated Twitch functionality. It makes sense for it to be a native part of the infrastructure, as game streaming seems to be all the rage these days. Well, maybe not all the rage, but at least a portion of the rage. However, with regard to the PS4, one of the drawbacks is that the only way to watch Twitch streams is to catch them live. This may change at some point. Speaking with Joystiq, Sony said that it's "planning to add Twitch livestream archiving in the future." Sony made no mention of a time-frame or what quality the streams would be set at. Microsoft isn't yet in the position of being able to speak about Twitch features, as it won't arrive on Xbox One until 2014. However, a spokesperson offered a generic "we're always listening to our fans' feedback, and [archiving] is certainly something we'd consider adding." Twitch archiving planned for PS4, being considered for Xbox One [Joystiq] |
| Be the first to complete one of Sony's PS4 challenges Posted: 22 Nov 2013 04:30 AM PST Sony has rolled out a neat little website for an event it's calling First to Greatness. There are 64 challenges in total from games like Killzone: Shadow Fall, Warframe, Knack, and Contrast -- whoever finishes any one of them first will be memorialized. To participate, you'll need to capture the moment using the DualShock 4's Share button, upload it to Facebook, and then sign into the First to Greatness site using your Facebook account. Some of these "firsts" will make it into a remake of the Perfect Day TV spot and there's also supposed to be something new on the site once all 64 challenges have been completed. Even if you're late to the party here, you can still participate. As much as I've lost interest in going after most achievements outside of the occasional few that are inherently rewarding or interesting, this is a neat idea. Talk about a cool way to energize PS4 owners. First to Greatness: 64 PS4 Challenges to Test Your Mettle [PlayStation Blog] |
| How to unlock Super Mario 3D World's secret character Posted: 22 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST Super Mario 3D World has a secret playable fifth character, and it's not unlocked through normal means. Watch the above video to find out who it is, and how to go about obtaining the secret. Be warned -- the video spoils the new character after the 1:00 mark with some gameplay. For everything else, I have a few tips below that should help you out come launch day. |
| RAGE free-to-play and on sale this weekend via Steam Posted: 22 Nov 2013 03:30 AM PST RAGE, id Software's post apocalyptic shooter, can be played for free this weekend on Steam, and if you want to own it forever you can grab it for just $4.99. You have until Sunday at 1:00 PM Pacific time to play it for free, and the sale runs until Monday. If you already own RAGE on Steam, you can get The scorchers DLC for $1.24 as part of the sale. I played a couple of hours of RAGE with a friend on his Xbox 360 a few years ago, and I wasn't that impressed with it. It does look really pretty though, and it's hard to pass on games for five bucks. I'll most likely just check it out over the free weekend to see how it is on the PC. |
| Wii U expected to sell 25 million units over lifetime Posted: 22 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST DFC Intelligence, a video game research and consulting firm, told GamesIndustry International that they expect the Wii U to sell 25 million units over its lifetime. That's a quarter of the total sales of the Wii, and it's only slightly higher than the sales of the GameCube. This is a lower number than the firm first expected. Despite the lowered expectations, analyst David Cole is hopeful for Nintendo's future, saying "I think Nintendo is carving out a different audience. I think that being said it is the right strategy. The audience they are going after is not the ones that Sony and Microsoft are going after. Right now they need to go after Nintendo fans first. They should have done that last year but better late than never." |
| I should have made Chris post this Zelda accolades video Posted: 22 Nov 2013 02:45 AM PST I'm just giving you a hard time, Chris. I always stand behind our team's reviews, and I'm not concerned with what the other sites have said. But I love The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds so much. It's so good! Consider this hazing for your new job role. Tee hee hee. |
| Sony tweets 'Congrats' to Microsoft for Xbox One launch Posted: 22 Nov 2013 02:30 AM PST With just a simple word and some hashtags, Sony has congratulated Microsoft on the launch of the Xbox One. The PlayStation Twitter account tweeted out, "Congrats, @Xbox @Microsoft! #NextGeneration #GreatnessAwaits." this morning. Last week, Microsoft tweeted its congratulations to Sony for the launch of the PlayStation 4. Microsoft had a picture in its tweet, but Sony had more hashtags, so I guess things are even. It's nice to see both companies behaving themselves on social networks. |
| GameStop still needs to fill 2.3 million PS4 pre-orders Posted: 22 Nov 2013 02:15 AM PST GameStop sold its entire stock of PS4 systems at launch, and then moved through an extra allocations from Sony. But 2.3 million customers on their "first to know" list are still waiting for the shiny new system, reports Gamesindustry.biz. This news came from a post-earnings call, as did an interesting stat on GameStop's PlayStation Plus sales. A full one-third of the PS Plus subscriptions GameStop has sold in their lifetime were sold in the last seven days. "And we've been selling them for years," GameStop president Tony Bartel noted. The same call revealed that GameStop has sold 80 percent more PS4s in one week than the total number of PS3 systems they sold in 2006. The Xbox One is also on track to outpace the Xbox 360. GameStop's reserved numbers already exceeds the number of Xbox 360s sold in 2005 by 15 percent. Even with the large number of customers still waiting for their PS4 systems, it seems that GameStop helped Sony to have a really good week. |

Here, you'll find a quick rundown of the exclusives launching with the Xbox One, or when to expect coverage (due to embargos or other limiting factors). If you're looking for multi-platform game coverage, you can find it at our PlayStation 4 launch area. |
| Xbox One optical output only delivers stereo at launch Posted: 22 Nov 2013 01:30 AM PST This all started with a good find by the folks at Kotaku in their Xbox One review. They found that the optical digital output port of the Xbox One was only passing stereo signals. This led to a NeoGAF thread, and then a response post by Xbox director of product planning Albert Penello, who calmed the fires with a response. "Dolby Digital is coming post launch," he said. "This was a SW scheduling issue pure and simple, and I know people are disappointed, but we will have it." To be clear, HDMI output is perfectly fine, and is sending the full uncompressed audio signals to your devices. The big issue is for those that own Dolby-only gaming headsets, as the stereo signal will only give you stereo sound. Granted, the headsets with stereo-to-surround processing will be fine, but the rest of you will need to wait until the update hits to get your surround on. As an audio guy, I can suggest a few alternatives. Most decent receivers will take your HDMI input and send audio back out an optical port. Simply plug your headset into your receiver's optical output and you're golden. Similarly, good television sets will have an optical port that does the same thing. This port is usually used to send audio to a receiver, but you can plug your headset in there and get glorious surround sound. I'd bet that the majority of games are still stereo experiences, though. Not a huge deal. |
| Opinion: November 2013 is a great month for gaming Posted: 22 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PST September of 1999 was my favorite month in gaming. It was a date that lived in infamy, with the launch of the ill-fated Dreamcast, a console with arguably the best launch lineup of all time. But on its release date of 9/9/99 I wasn't playing Sega's new system -- I was chipping away at Final Fantasy VIII, which had released on the same day. Ever since I found its demo disc in my treasured copy of Brave Fencer Musashi, I was enamored with FFVIII, to the point where I spent days on end saturating everything there was to do. Later that week, a friend gave me a call and invited me over to try the Dreamcast -- I was not prepared for the all-night SoulCalibur and Power Stone sessions that topped off a monster month. It was absolutely unreal how amazing that period in my life was, and I still recall practically every detail to this day. Now, notice how I said September of 1999 was my favorite month in gaming earlier -- because November 2013 just surpassed it. |

I suggest that you just go check it out, without reading my description of it. If you must know what it is without clicking on it for yourself, it's an adorable set of puzzles staring Doctor Who. You get to pick any Doctor you want, and then you guide him on a pixellated adventure to find all six letters from the word "Google". The puzzles will have you timing your moves around Weeping Angels, Daleks, and Cybermen. If you mess up and die, you'll come back as the next regeneration of The Doctor. If the doodle isn't available in your timezone yet, or if you aren't reading this on Friday, this link will take you right to the doodle's archive page. Please fight in the comments about who is the best Doctor. Hint: Tom Baker is the best. |

The PlayStation 3 version of Activision's first-person shooter charted at number two overall on the nation's weekly software charts with 190,631 sales. The Xbox 360 release came in at number 13 overall, moving a mere 12,950 units over the same period. Battlefield 4 launched in Japan one week earlier and topped charts with a combined 133,000 copies sold, the vast majority of which also came on PlayStation 3. This time around EA's shooter ranked tenth with 19,291 sales. While Ghosts managed to best its main competitor's debut figures, it was Namco Bandai's God Eater 2 that reigned supreme in Japan last week. | Report: PS4 & Vita 'Ultimate Bundle' dropping in December Posted: 21 Nov 2013 11:45 PM PST It appears as if Sony is getting serious with the PlayStation Vita, as it's gearing up for a full campaign to sell it -- as an attachment for the PS4. Uncovered by MCV, Sony will reportedly launch a bundle called the "PS4 + PS Vita Ultimate Edition," which incorporates both systems together. It'll launch before Christmas, and will be sold heavily on the Vita's remote play functionality, that allows it to essentially handle the PS4's library via wifi. This is all well and good for sure, but honestly, I'm just waiting on the Vita TV. Vita/PS4 'Ultimate' bundle in-bound this year [MCV, David Scammell] |
