The Two Cities update for Team Fortress 2 is now live

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 03:00 PM PST

After yesterday's tease of new Team Fortress 2 content, Valve has revealed more about the new update for its free-to-play shooter. On the official blog, the developers showed off the second map for the Two Cities update called "Rottenburg." In an interesting twist, this map is also the hometown of the Medic character, and this update gives him some extra attention.

In the trailer commemorating the update for Mann vs. Machine, the Medic has created some new gadgets to help fight against the robot horde. The Reanimator allows the Medic to revive teammates, the Mad Milk Needles cause extra damage with the Syringe Gun, and most interesting of all, the Projectile Shield creates a movable protection field against enemy fire. Moreover, the update also includes new perks and customization options for the co-op mode.

Valve has really been on it lately, and it's clear they have a lot of love for this title. I can never get enough of these TF2 updates, and they never cease to amaze with what they can come up with next. So go forth, and try out this content. Because it's all available right now!

Impressions: Xbox Fitness

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 02:30 PM PST

One thing I don't see discussed often in regards to exercise is the high price tag involved with intense workouts. Although you can find a local gym for fairly cheap and get fit on your own, getting to the next level sometimes requires hiring a physical trainer, joining classes, or ordering routines -- which can get extremely expensive.

So I was really skeptical when Microsoft announced that Xbox Fitness would offer free workouts that are normally on the pricey side -- like P90X and Insanity. But after trying it out for myself I'm mostly happy with the results, even if the app itself has a long way to go.

Man arrested for making death threats against Nintendo

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST

Police in Japan's Akita Prefecture have arrested an unnamed man who reportedly made numerous threats against Nintendo, his latest being death threats against two Nintendo executives.

The two executives who allegedly targeted will remain unnamed, but previous threats include detailed bomb threats, such as this little note that reads: "I'd planted bombs at Nintendo headquarters, tomorrow afternoon they're going to blow up, Nintendo go bankrupt."

The messages were apparently sent back in May through Nintendo's online inquiry page, and were traced back to the man's home IP address. Shortly upon being taken into police custody, the would-be killer readily admitted to his actions. Nintendo received similar threats back in September, and police are further investigating if there is a connection.

Xbox One's Kinect can't see you naked, says Microsoft

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST

Did you see a penis in this video? It seems the above tech demo left some people concerned that the Xbox One's new, better Kinect would be able to see your genitals. People are (understandably) rather paranoid about their privacy (and privates) when it comes to Kinect.

A Microsoft representative, speaking to IGN, explained, "There is no tech magic going on here and Kinect cannot see through clothing. Furthermore, the video was an illustration of the various camera views available for the creation of games and apps. This view is only accessible on a development kit and is not viewable on retail consoles."

The alleged penis was chalked up to, "a fold in the denim."

So, no, the Xbox One can't see your junk. Unless you willingly expose yourself to it. And with that full HD Skype capability, it might be hard to resist.

Sony Pictures looking to make $100 million in cuts

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST

Coming off of a very successful console launch, Sony is looking to trim some fat in other parts of the company. The subject of these trimmings, Sony Pictures, is reportedly going to see $100 million worth of cuts, including job losses. At the center of these cuts is Bain & Co., a global management consulting firm, whom Sony has hired to identify where cuts should be made. Sony's share prices have jumped at this announcement.

Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai will address the situation formally on November 21 during a conference at the company's Culver City studio, so until then, it's hard to say how this will affect Sony as a whole. This move also comes at a rather harsh time in the company's finances, where Sony's debt rating is running the risk of dropping to junk.

Pokemon X and Y: Fastest 3DS game to hit a million sold

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 11:30 AM PST

Pokemon X and Y have sold well. 4 million copies sold in the first two days. Apparently, the series' first foray onto the 3DS sold a million copies in the US alone on that first day, joining Pokemon Black and White, which also crossed a million US sales day one.

It took Mario Kart 7, the system's second fastest game to hit a million sales, one month to do so. Pokemon did it in a day. Infographics are the best at driving points home. Look at that bar graph!

Pokemon also spiked 3DS sales upward. That system is rocking it this the year of Luigi.

SteamWorld Dig coming to PC/Mac in HD next month

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 11:00 AM PST

There are a number of great 3DS eShop games I've managed to miss this year, with SteamWorld Dig easily topping that list. As much as news of the game coming to Steam (PC and Mac) on December 5, 2013 has me wanting to get the handheld version immediately, good gosh this game looks fabulous in high definition. It's only two weeks. It's only two weeks...

According to developer Image & Form, the previously-talked-about next SteamWorld title won't abandon 3DS. "Nintendo has treated us like royalty, and the Nintendo community is fantastic," said CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson. "We would be very foolish to turn our backs on them. As with SteamWorld Dig, our next SteamWorld game will appear on the 3DS day one."

So there's nothing to worry about there. Going back to SteamWorld Dig on Steam, this version will be $9.99 / £6.99 / €8.99 with a slight discount offering during the launch period, and you can expect 60 frames per second, gamepad support, cloud saves, and the like.

Impressions: Dead Rising 3's SmartGlass App

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 10:30 AM PST

Microsoft's SmartGlass functionality kind of came and went on the Xbox 360. Very few games supported the "second screen experience" concept and if they did, it was usually something underwhelming like an interactive website.

But with Dead Rising 3, Capcom has attempted to make a fun companion to the game that directly interfaces with your game in a way few SmartGlass games have before. It's far from essential, but it's helpful when you're in a pinch in Nightmare mode, and it also doubles as a fun way to get a little extra role-playing mileage.

Crowbar in Half-Life 2: Lost Coast - Challenge Scot

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST

This week's challenge takes place in Half Life 2: Lost Coast, in which I must beat the entire level using nothing but the famous crowbar. Freeman is pretty proficient in crowbar combat, but there are some enemies that even the mighty crowbar cannot defeat...

If you've got any ideas for future challenges you'd like me to have a go at, feel free to leave them in the comments!

Telltale is reportedly working on Game of Thrones

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 09:30 AM PST

This is one of those rumors that you can just picture being true. According to IGN, sources say Telltale Games is making a game based on Game of Thrones. Whether the project will draw inspiration directly from the HBO show or A Song of Ice and Fire isn't currently known.

As you may recall, Telltale co-founder Dan Connors previously remarked that the studio was on track to work on "a few licenses that definitely fall into our dream IP scenario." Special shout out to Destructoid commenters jeremycards and pixxpixx for guessing Game of Thrones, assuming this rumor comes to fruition. Either way, I expect a ton of relevant GIFs.

For his part, Telltale's senior VP of publishing Steve Allison said "We get these sorts of rumors about what we could be working on next cropping up all the time. Officially we have no comment."

Review: Foul Play

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST

The beat-'em-up genre has some serious classics in it; Turtles in Time and Castle Crashers immediately come to mind. There’s just something about those games that cement them as amazing experiences in our mind. Playing with buddies, throwing enemies at the screen, watching deer explosively poop, and some satisfying yet simple gameplay mechanics combine to bring smiles to our faces and put memories into our squish-brains.

Foul Play enters the genre with its own calling card: everything is done on-stage, in a theater. It’s a gimmick that works very well, but as I’m sure we all know, an aesthetic can only carry a game so far in this world.

Earn three free PS1 games in PlayStation Home

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 08:30 AM PST

If you're one of the unfortunate souls in North America to still have PlayStation Home installed or don't mind going through that process for a few free games, listen up -- Twisted Metal, Demolition Derby, and Warhawk can be all yours. Here's how, as detailed by redditor DrunkenNinja:

"To start the quest, go on to Home, go to PS4 Experience, and then go to the giant Vita in the center of the room and follow the prompts. You can get Warhawk by going back to the giant Vita, Demolition Derby by going to the giant screen to the south, and Twisted Metal for completing the quiz behind the locked door. Once you get the appropriate reward, you will be shown a code that you can enter in the PSN store to redeem. If you forgot to write down your code, there is a code redemption machine to the left side of the room where you can bring up any of your game codes."

Might be worth you time, might not. Frankly, I'm always baffled that Home is still up and running. Actually, let me rephrase that, because it's surely generating a fair amount of money for Sony. I'm always baffled that players continue to invest time in this thing (outside of free offers such as this).

Injustice: Gods Among Us finally available for Android

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 07:45 AM PST

Warner Brothers Interactive announced today that Injustice: Gods Among Us is finally available for Android devices as a free download via Google Play, and will also be available through the Amazon Appstore soon. Previously only available for iOS devices, the mobile version of Injustice pits characters in three-on-three tag battles in a collectible card game structure.

Connecting the device to your WBID unlocks content in the console version and vice versa, so the folks who've been waiting for the Android version to get a few costumes and such can now finally collect them. If you've picked up the just-released Ultimate Edition this works for that version as well.

At least it wasn't keeping achievements from being unlocked. That would have driven me crazy. Well...crazier.

Beyond: Two Souls DLC looks like an obstacle course

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 07:30 AM PST

Here we have a trailer for the latest DLC release for Beyond: Two Souls, "Advanced Experiments." The video sets up a boring, white-walled obstacle course with a thirty-minute time limit which Jodie and Aiden will work together to navigate. It's currently available on PSN for $4.99.

Might be fun, but it's not the kind of thing I would have expected to come as DLC for Beyond. I never got the sense from reviews that action gameplay was a strong suit, and that's all this appears to be. Besides, where are all the emotions?

Destructoid's favorite Xbox 360 games: A warm look back

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST

We're almost there. With the release of the Xbox One just a few hours away, the torch will finally be passed, and what we've referred to as "next-generation" for years will simply become "this generation." Exciting times to be a gamer.

Of course, the release of the Xbox One doesn't simply make the Xbox 360 vanish into thin air. Games will still be developed for it for a long time to come, and a lot of people will probably just stick to their 360s for quite a while. That being said, it's undeniable that the focus will squarely shift to what's happening on Xbox One.

But, in a way, that shift can sort of be a tough pill to swallow. A lot of good things came out of the 360's lifespan. Just as we did with the Wii and the PS3, we want to reflect on our personal experiences with the Xbox 360 before setting our sights on Microsoft's new console. These were the Destructoid Staff's favorite Xbox 360 titles:

Amazon's Black Friday promo starts earlier than ever

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 06:45 AM PST

Remember when "Black Friday" happened on a Friday? Those were the good old days. Not content to simply allow a sales extravaganza to bleed into Thanksgiving like brick-and-mortar retailers have done in recent years, Amazon is starting their big holiday promotion this coming Sunday.

A press release issued today has teased some of the bigger offers which will cycle through the week-long event, where deals will be offered in limited quantities for a limited time. A PS3 bundle with The Last of Us and Batman Arkham Origins for $199 has been teased, while the Xbox 360 will have a package with Halo 4 and Tomb Raider for $189.99.

Games known to be getting discounted include Call of Duty: Ghosts ($39.96), Grand Theft Auto V, Batman Arkham Origins ($34 each), FIFA 14, Madden 25, Battlefield 4, and NCAA Football 14 ($25 each). Plus, selected titles in the Amazon Appstore will be discounted as much as 90% during the week.

Streaming Minecraft is now a button press away

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST

Mojang's planned Twitch integration for Minecraft isn't finished just yet, but it's in a good enough state that you can try it out for yourself in snapshot 13w47c. To set this up, go into your Mojang account settings and link your Twitch account.

Once you have the new snapshot -- obtainable by creating a new profile and checking the "Enable experimental development snapshots" box -- and your accounts are linked, simply press the F6 key by default in Minecraft to begin streaming. To adjust settings, head into the Options menu and look for Broadcast Options. Once again, the Twitch support is in development, so expect bugs. There's a short demo above by YouTube user sethbling.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's "it" seems weird and scary to me.

Here's a trailer explaining travel in The Banner Saga

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST

Yes, The Banner Saga still looks amazing. Great, now let's move onto some of the actual strategy mechanics which are explained in the trailer above. The traveling system relies on three resources: morale, supplies, and population, all of which intertwine. Resting your caravan will improve morale (important for battles) but that will in turn eat into your supplies. Once your supplies start going your caravan's population will dwindle.

I had originally thought The Banner Saga was just going to be the turn-based combat we've seen in previous trailers so I'm glad to see there's an extra strategy layer on top of that. Resting your caravan will give you options to re-arrange your party, promote warriors, and assign items. I've been keen on seeing more of the mechanics of The Banner Saga; it's clearly a beautiful-looking game but it's going to need to deliver on the strategy side for it to be really special.

Review: Super Motherload

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST

Super Motherload was supposed to be my “tester” experience -- the first game that I booted up on my PlayStation 4 to get a feel for the system. I planned to take a few minutes to acquaint myself with the controller and then return to the home screen to browse the other titles I purchased.

Five hours later, I sat there drooling as I descended further into Mars, my stomach hungry but my mind without a care. My task was simple: drill for precious minerals and process them at the surface base.

Oh, if only it were that simple.

Humble Weekly has 20+ Pinball FX2 tables for six bucks

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 05:45 AM PST

This Humble Weekly Sale is all about Zen Studios. If you're like me and don't own any Pinball FX2 content on PC yet, it is a terrific way to get into the game for cheap. At $1 or more for Steam keys, the bundle includes the Core Pack (Pasha, Rome, Biolab, and Secret of the Deep), the Classic Pack (Shaman, El Dorado, Tesla, V12, and Sorcerer's Lair), and the Earth Defense, Paranormal, and Epic Quest tables.

That's all well and good, but it's the $6-and-over tier you'll likely want to go for. This bundle adds in three more packs: Avengers Chronicles (Marvel's The Avengers, Fear Itself, The Infinity Gauntlet, and World War Hulk), Star Wars (The Empire Strikes Back, The Clone Wars, and Boba Fett), and Marvel Pinball Original (Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Blade).

The last time I played this much digital pinball was back in the Windows XP days.

Poll: Half of voters want to default on 38 Studios loan

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 05:30 AM PST

A majority of Rhode Islanders are in favor of becoming ostriches, burying their heads in the sand, and pretending the debt incurred from the state's ill-fated loan to Kingdoms of Amalur developer 38 Studios no longer exists, according to a recent WPRI and Providence Journal poll of 506 registered voters.

Half of surveyed respondents believe the state shouldn't repay the $90 million owed to investors who purchased bonds used to fund Curt Schilling's now-defunct development house. Meanwhile, 38 percent stated they think the debts should be repaid. Everyone else waffled on the hot button issue.

Governor Lincoln 'I told you so' Chafee, who opposed the deal whilst running for office in 2010 and allegedly prevented 38 Studios from avoiding bankruptcy, does not want to be an ostrich. However, he does understand how voters feel. The sand is safe and warm, after all. And like Freddy Krueger, debt only has power if you believe it exists.

"Obviously nobody really wants to be on the hook for that dumb decision that was made by the previous administration," Chafee told WPRI, but warned defaulting "would have ramifications for years and years." The politician was also quick to point out he is still crusading against Schilling and other architects of the deal to recoup a portion of the massive tab.

Treasurer Gina Raimondo, who is expected to vie for the governorship next year, is also in the non-ostrich camp. “We have to pay that back so we don't have our bond rating reduced,” Raimondo advised. “I hate paying it as much as anyone," she said, calling the deal a “disaster” that “never should have happened,” but insists repayment is "the right thing to do for the state overall."

Wing Commander series half-off on GOG.com

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST

GOG.com has added another feather in their cap with the release today of Wing Commander: Armada, the 1994 addition to the series which brought multiplayer game modes for the first time. And to celebrate, they're putting their entire collection of Wing Commander titles (which has everything short of the barely connected Privateer 2) on sale for half the price if you buy the entire stack of games. The sale runs for the next week.

Wing Commander was not my favorite game for space dogfighting. That distinction goes to the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games. They were still great fun and I'm considering going in on this deal if for no other reason that to watch cutscenes of Mark Hamill and Malcolm Macdowell hamming it up.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare dated for Xbox

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 04:45 AM PST

On paper, a team-centric third-person shooter multiplayer game based on Plants vs. Zombies sounds like a cynical mess, but from everything I've seen of Garden Warfare, it may well be one of my most anticipated games. There's a gun that is also a dolphin, people! PopCap has dated the Xbox 360 and Xbox One title for February 18, 2014 in North America and February 20 in Europe. Last we heard, the PC version was set to be released "shortly after" this launch.

On Xbox One, Garden Warfare has a couple of extras -- splitscreen co-op and Boss mode, which uses Kinect or a SmartGlass device to put players in more of a support role with an overhead view of the battlefield (think Battlefield's Commander mode). There's a price difference between the two versions as well. The game is $29.99 for 360 and $39.99 for Xbox One. Suits me!

Now, I can't say I'm expecting this to be the next Team Fortress or anything but, again, it does look promising.

Nintendo Download: Super Mario 3D World

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 04:30 AM PST

The Wii U has a particularly exciting week, with Super Mario 3D World launching tomorrow. In my opinion it's the best game on the Wii U so far, so take a look at our review and consider it an option alongside of your shiny new console. Also on the Wii U is Mysterious Cities of Gold: Secret Paths, EDGE, and Brawl Brothers. Finally, Mega Man 1-4 are discounted to $3.49 on the Wii U Virtual Console, so if you need some recommendations, check out my thoughts here.

The 3DS side is equally as exciting for Nintendo fans, as Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is out this week. I didn't like it as much as a few others did, but maybe you'll enjoy your magical quest to find all of Link's hearts. As for the rest of the 3DS lineup, there's Jewel Match 3, Ohno Odyssey, Christmas Wonderland 3, City Connection, Mario Party: Island Tour, Hands On! Tangrams, and Phoenix Wright - Dual Destinies DLC. Mega Man 1-4 are also on sale on the 3DS for $3.49.

Lightning Returns to ship with a DLC Japanese voice pack

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST

Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII may have launched in Japan today, but it'll hit other markets on Valentine's Day, February 14th. When it finally does come overseas, you'll have the opportunity to download a Japanese voice-over pack as DLC -- it's free for two weeks, then it reverts into paid content.

I know people often say that they don't care if games have dual-audio or not given that it's pretty expensive to put in, but I for one appreciate the option. As always, even if you're not planning on picking up the game at launch, download the DLC for free just in case, as it'll be waiting whenever you get around to it.

Killer Instinct launch trailer teases Fulgore

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 02:50 AM PST

As the release of the Xbox One approaches, the official launch trailer for Killer Instinct is out now, and it's teasing plans for the future. Much like their previous trailers, they showcase much of the existing content while giving a small taste of what to expect next. Now, we have official confirmation that the final character for Season 1 of Killer Instinct will be Fulgore.

Much like Spinal, set for release in January, Fulgore will brought into the game at a later date, which is now on track for March. While it is disappointing that the characters are not present when the game launches this week, it is interesting to know that Double Helix has plans bigger for the complete Season 1 roster once the Fulgore is released.

With the release coming up, which Killer Instinct characters are you looking forward to playing as the most?

Next Tomb Raider is Lara's next chapter of development

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 02:30 AM PST

Brian Horton, the Senior Art Director at Crystal Dynamics, is really excited that the next Tomb Raider has been announced so he can talk about it. Horton explained the direction of the sequel's story, saying that "The Tomb Raider sequel is the next chapter of [Lara’s] development… her life is changing. She can’t go back to the way she was."

So it looks like this will still be a prequel to the Lara we know from the older games, but I think that could be an interesting story. In Tomb Raider we saw what started to make her into the character we're familiar with, but the story really didn't get that far. I loved Tomb Raider, and this has gone on my list of my most anticipated games.

Jimmy Fallon and Will Forte race on waves with Xbox One

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 02:15 AM PST

Last week on Late Night we saw Jimmy Fallon and Ice-T kick some robots around with the PlayStation 4 for its launch. Naturally, the Xbox One couldn't go without being demonstrated for its launch week, so Blain Howard visited the set to show off Forza Motorsport 5 and to let Fallon and guest Will Forte play a piece of Kinect Sports Rivals.

I'll be honest: I'm a fan of Jimmy Fallon. I'm glad that he and his team make an effort to cover videogames under the umbrella of entertainment, and that he does it with enthusiasm (as opposed to disdain). The excitement he puts out is infectious; for a split second while watching the clip above, the Wave Race-esque chunk of Kinect Sports Rivals actually seemed like fun.

Can you guess which console these Strider screens are for

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST

In 2014, a new Strider will launch on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC platforms. Set to hit Japan on February 22nd, the game will be both a downloadable title and a packaged version -- similar to DuckTales Remastered. The PS3 version will ship with a code to download the first original games by way of PSOne Classics, but as of right now that promotion is only announced for Japan.

Also currently limited to Japan, you can spring for a deluxe edition, with three games in total, a three disc soundtrack, an art insert, stickers, a mask, a badge, and a special box. A new set of screenshots have also arrived, and you can see the slight differences between the PS3 and PS4 versions below.

I was initially dismissive of Double Helix, but after playing (and mostly enjoying) Killer Instinct, I'm willing to give them a shot. Considering Capcom Osaka studio is helping with the production as well, I'm not giving up all hope.

The Crackdown 2 devs are working on a next-gen project

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 01:30 AM PST

The developer of Crackdown 2, Ruffian Games, is evidently working on a "next-gen console project" due in 2014. The news comes by way of the Scottish Games Network, which has a posting for a "large project" in need of two programmers and audio work. There's no word on what that game might be, but "large" may very well infer an open world game. With the power of next-gen machines, I'd love to see more sandboxes with astonishing draw distances, filled with interesting distractions.

I also wouldn't mind a third Crackdown game, as that franchise is guilty pleasure of mine. Although I wouldn't really recommend them to a lot of people, I like how they just set you loose in a city with super-powers and allow you to wreak havoc. It's a formula that I felt was solidified in Saints Row IV.

Nathan Drake will be in PS4 Uncharted, says PS Russia

Over on NeoGAF, user WarrenMax007 shared a Facebook Status from PlayStation Russia that says, "We would like to share some important news with you, first trailer of Uncharted on PS4 has been released! Where do you think Nathan Drake's fate will take him this time?"

WarrenMax007 points out that PlayStation Russia also leaked out the Mass Effect 3 reveal. It looks like someone over there doesn't know how to schedule posts.

Did we ever really think that Drake wouldn't be in the next Uncharted? Isn't that like Indiana Jones not being in the next Indiana Jones movie?

Zato=One returns in Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 12:30 AM PST

A new character has been revealed for Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign, and it's none other than Zato=One. As Guilty Gear fans know, Zato actually died over the course of the franchise -- a victim of fighter Millia Rage. His shadow parasite "Eddie," took over his dead corpse as a clone of sorts in later games. Zato was a rare case in which a fighting game character was seemingly dead for good, but now he's back. I'm interested in hearing the story behind the revival.

In other Guilty Gear news, a really odd silhouette has been teased on the site, which you can find below. I see a cross, a chain, giant hands, and crab feet -- anyone have an ideas?

Right now there isn't a whole lot you can actually do on it, but news updates will be steadily flowing through it over the coming weeks, "straight from the developers," which is great news.

The forums right now are for backers only, but that may change in the future. Now, all we have to do is wait. It will be painful. Hold me.

Valve explains how its in-home streaming will work

Posted: 21 Nov 2013 12:00 AM PST

On the Steam In-Home Streaming group, Valve shared a few pages of details on how its streaming setup will work. They started off by explaining what streaming is, and why you would want to use it:

"Any two computers in a home can be used to stream a gameplay session and this can enable playing games on systems that would not traditionally be able to run those games. For example, a Windows only game could be streamed from a Windows PC to a Steam Machine running Linux in the living room. A graphically intensive game could be streamed from a beefy gaming rig in the office to your low powered laptop that you are using in bed. You could even start a game on one computer and move to a more comfortable location and continue playing it there."

Report: Ninja Theory may shift to mobile development

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 11:30 PM PST

[Update: A representative at Ninja Theory has denied these claims, stating that they are open to mobile and console development. It appears as if Tameem was mouthing off. Again. Someone really needs to implement a "no talking" policy with him.]

In an interesting turn of events, Edge has made light of a Q & A session involving Ninja Theory lead Tameem Antoniades at the Slush business conference last week, speaking about the downfall of the console industry and the rise of the mobile platform. According to Edge, Antoniades called the console AAA model "broken," and stated that "publishers control the marketing and the funding." This may be a direct reference to DmC's poor sales, but the wording isn't clear.

He went on to champion the rise of digital media, using Spotify as an example of where the music industry is headed, and name drops Angry birds in addition to the rise of the mobile gaming market. Antoniades also states that "after a few years, [he] fully expect[s] mobile devices to be the dominant form." It is heavily implied in this interview that Ninja Theory may be gearing up to fully embrace the mobile market -- but of course this could just be Tameem rambling again on behalf of his company, as he's known to do.

Industry opinions on Ninja Theory are all across the map, on both sides of the quality spectrum. I lie somewhere in the middle, as I think their games have tremendous production values and look great, but they don't play great (especially Enslaved). One thing is for sure though -- they've been trying to find success for over a decade now since they started as "Just Add Monsters," and I think it may be high time to try something drastically different. If they really want to try mobile and think it's the future, maybe it'll work out for them.

Crimson Dragon will get a difficulty nerf at launch

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 11:20 PM PST

Crimson Dragon director Yukio Futatsugi has taken some early criticism to heart, and has decided to adjust the difficulty of the game a bit -- specifically, he's lowering it with a launch day patch. After each fight your dragons will now gain more experience (including failed mission XP), and all item costs have been reduced across the board.

It's a bit disappointing to see this change, as Futatsugi maintains that “Crimson Dragon is designed to be challenging" in his explanation post, and that he wants you to "feel like you’ve accomplished something each time you master a mission." Yet, he seemingly feels pressured to change the game from his original vision.

Difficulty in games can be a sticky subject. For some, it impedes their enjoyment of the game, and I totally get that criticism. But for a title that's a spiritual successor to a particularly hardcore franchise, nerfing the challenge doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. This happened with God of War: Ascension when the best part of the game (The Trial of Archimedes) was completely gutted, and it was equally as disappointing.

Review: Ryse: Son of Rome

Crytek has quite the reputation for crafting some of the most visually advanced games on the market. The Crysis games have been a consistent benchmark for PC fans, and even if you don't enjoy their work, it's always interesting to see how much further they can push a piece of hardware.

In this instance, Crytek is set to push the Xbox One at launch, with their first ever console exclusive -- Ryse: Son of Rome. As is the case with many games that are content to present visuals first and foremost, the rest of the campaign basically falls flat..

The Fresh Prince moves to the Mushroom Kingdom

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 06:00 PM PST

You haven't seen a mash-up quite like this. To celebrate the release of Super Mario 3D World, and to remind people how awesome '90s television was -- some fans have created a bizarre and ingenious remix of the game's main theme with the vocals from the popular sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

For you youngins out there, this show was the bomb back in the day, and pretty much every real fan of the series knows the lyrics by heart. With this mash-up bringing together two radically different influences, it's uncanny to hear how well it comes together.

But enough talk! Listen, and be taken away by Will Smith's lyrical wizardry and the sweet sounds of Super Mario 3D World's charming tunes.

The Game of Console Wars heats up in South Park

The second chapter of the Game of Thrones x console wars South Park episode, titled "A Song of Ass and Fire," sees the men in charge of both Sony and Microsoft fighting dirty. Microsoft gives the Xbox clan guns and other weaponry, while Sony transforms Kenny into a real princess.

This episode also doesn't wrap up the saga, if anything it stretches it out in what's more or less a jab at George R.R. Martin. Will the epic console war fight finally go down in the third chapter? Probably!

Oh, and the episode also really focuses on George R.R. Martin's obsession with flaccid penises. You should be able to watch the entire episode once it's uploaded on South Park Studios. Here's a preview clip in the mean time.
